' Military Society' is the story of fifteen years (1952-1967)--the final stage of Egypt's nat8ional revolution--and of the military reime of Nasser's Egypt, full of contradictions, contentions, repression of the Left.
An Egyptian-French political scientist of Coptic descent . He was a pan-Arabist and Marxist. Anouar Abdel-Malek gained a bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 1954 from Ain Shams University before studying for a doctorate at the Sorbonne. He subsequently joined the CNRS, becoming head of research there in 1970.
Incisive, detailed, well researched, and way ahead of it's time. Abdel-Malek's analysis (while not perfect) is timeless, and should be read by anyone seeking an authentic Egyptian Marxist understanding of the Nasser period. A classic.
