A new kind of momcom role-playing adventure! Next stop on the party's journey is a casino town! Lured by the potential big winnings, Wise, Medhi, and Porta try their luck at a few games only to sustain devastating financial losses. It's up to Masato and his mother Mamako to rescue them from their debt by taking on a job at the casino...and for Mamako, that involves a bunny girl costume!
Volume 4 was interesting. essentially the entire theme of this one was gambling.
The group heads to this town where it's covered in casinos. the big baddie is the woman in charge of these casinos. the girls (minus the mom) all lose their money and have to work as bunny girls to pay off the debt. Masako and Mamako have to save the day.
This one...was interesting. it seemed to focus a lot on letting a mother spoil their child with love and that was really the answers to many of the problems.
Overall, it's hard to describe the inner mechanisms of the plot, since it was a lot of little things. masato and mamako would be out in the town and masako would be spoiled by her as a distraction while the girls gamble, and then we'd cut to the girls gambling. Masato and mamako would spend the night in a hotel and then they come back the next day to help the girls. It's very..i wouldn't say boring, but not a lot is going on.
The one issue i have with the series continues in this volume where Mamako, while being a little better is still continually dense and airheaded, is still very much OP in terms of winning everything and Masato doesn't really get to DO much. i assume this is going to come to a head later in the series where Masato really has to be the hero, but they're still playing the "mom is the OP" one for laughs and that part as least is wearing a little thin, as seeing Mamako go through some hardships and character growth would be nice.
I'm not really a fan of when they bring in the mom NPC's, because they're pretty useless and annoying (as they were in volume 3), but luckily they're not in it enough to make me truly annoyed.
This volume was fine, i wasn't the biggest fan of it, but i still really like Porta, and Medhi's pretty cool. I can leave Wise because of her violent personality, and Masato is funny at times, if not cringy at others. The villain of this novel was...serviceable? if not a little dull being a casino owner whose power is basically luck.
All in all, not a bad volume. not a great one, but not bad. i'm going to give it a 3.5 out of 5 rounded down to a 3.
The fourth volume of a series that seems to split opinion based on how much you can stomach all the mother-son jokes and, if you can't, then not a lot has changed. In fact, with Masato and Mamako going on a date of sorts in this volume, then perhaps it's heavier on the mock-incest material than ever. Take it in the silly, ridiculously tongue-in-cheek way it's intended, though, and it's still pretty funny. Not the most intelligent comedy ever, but it does make me laugh, even if it can stray over the line between funny and uncomfortable from time to time.
For this volume in particular, I enjoyed the casino town setting and it was utilised in a way that gave the entire cast plenty to do (Wise as a dark-hearted bunny girl was particularly amusing) and I liked the new villain, Sorella. Her lackadaisical attempt to defeat Mamako without actually lifting her finger was something new and it was funny, too, even if her shtick of talking like thiiiiiis could get a little wearing. The climax was a highlight, too, as we see Mamako genuinely needing help for what feels like the first time, which mixes things up.
It might not be the greatest light novel series, but I enjoy DYLYM as a bit of light-hearted, embarrassing fun and this volume is an enjoyable one if you feel the same.
Let's face it, this series has never been spectacular (at least for me). This one hearkens back to volume 1 where it can't decide if it is just Oedipally awkward or if it trying to embrace it. I'm on the side of awkward because it hasn't in four volumes truly transcended that. The first half of this one was so chock full of it that I almost stopped reading.
So why do I keep reading them? Well, because the library has them. I think they're getting one more so I may read it, but I am not in a rush.
So aside from all the awkward Mom moments -- this is the very tropey casino story. The girls all build up a massive debt and get shanghaied into working at the casino. Mamako and Masato have to go rescue them. As usual, there is so much Deus ex Mom-icha that you know Mamako is going to sort it all out. There is a brief period where Masato actually gets to do something in this book, but don't hold your breath.
Verdict: Unless you are someone who actually likes this series, skip it. You can find better things to read.
