Ce que n'est pas l'identité

L'identité n’est ni une notion molle, signifiant tout et n’importe quoi, ni, à l’opposé, une réalité substantielle qu’il suffirait d’observer. S’appuyant sur la compilation de nombreux travaux produits dans différents domaines (anthropologie, sociologie, psychologie sociale, psychanalyse, histoire), cet ouvrage de synthèse montre qu’il s’agit d’une expérience à la fois importante et dûment structurée, ainsi que d’une notion parfaitement utilisable. Mais il faut pour cela s’abstenir de réduire la question de l’identité à un camp politique, ou à la seule dimension de l’identité nationale, ou encore à une conception essentialiste et unidimensionnelle : ce pour quoi la meilleure façon de comprendre l’identité est d’en passer par ce qu’elle n’est pas. Au terme d’une telle analyse, la notion d’identité apparaît comme non seulement compréhensible mais utile, en tant qu’elle permet de mettre en évidence les conditions d’une cohérence de soi dans les différents régimes d’existence, du plus individuel au plus collectif.

Une approche exigeante, en partant des stéréotypes et lieux communs sur l'identité, N. Heinich les expose et construit une approche efficace de l'identité. En plein dans l'actualité, ce livre nous donne une approche à la fois sociologique et philosophique mais surtout très claire.

Verhelderend essay over het lastige begrip identiteit. 'Identiteit' is niet eenduidig maar kent 3 dimensies: zelf-perceptie 'zich voelen', presentatie 'zich noemen' en toeschrijving door de ander 'genoemd worden'. Identiteitsproblemen ontstaan alleen dan als er discrepanties blijken te bestaan tussen minimaal 2 van de dimensies.

As much as I value(d) the effort to create a framework for identity that did not reduce it to assigned or inherent and that respected its changeability, its variability... But honestly I was disgusted by the framing of "sexual preference," for which she gave homosexuality as an example, as a "fluid, unstable, informal." Placing it in the same category (and listed after???) as hobbies and personality traits is gross and a deep-seated misunderstanding of any kind of sexuality and/or queer theory. I went into this knowing that she signed against "mariage pour tous" but wanted her to prove me wrong about her absolute lack of perspective on the subject, since this was published in 2018... Alas, she did not.

Heel mooie vertaling. Heb tijdens het lezen al meerdere keren in gesprekken verwezen naar deze tekst en zal dit nog wel een aantal keer doen. De manier van schrijven en de keuze voor bepaalde woorden voelen inderdaad academisch aan, maar omdat het onderwerp heel intuïtief is – dichter bij jezelf kan bijna niet – lijkt het me goed leesbaar voor een breed publiek. En anders vergroot het je vocabulaire, en dat is ook meteen mooi meegenomen.
