Jesus Loves Movies: A 30 Day Devotional for Film Fans

Rate this book
Intriguing title, eh?

Drama. Comedy. Thriller. Action. Jesus loves them all. And yes, even horror movies. Why? Because movies mean a lot to us. We quote them on the daily and they influence our lives. So, if Jesus loves us, don't you think that movies would also mean a lot to Him? Isn't He supposed to be personal?

Cinema is a spiritual sanctuary. It can be a place of healing, a place where you can hear the validating voice of a personal and very present God.

Jesus Loves Movies provides you with thirty films that will draw you into a cinematic experience with the most creative Director. Use this book as a devotional, a guide, or in any way that you desire. May it show you that God is in everything. May it lighten your load and demonstrate to you that He is fun, interesting, and deep. May the pages of this book open your senses to a side of God that the modern day church sometimes struggles to understand.

Written during a season of deep pain, grief, and injustice; analyses of thirty films contained in the pages of Jesus Loves Movies will bring you to a secret movie space. A space where the most Holy One will adorn you with His peace, love, and restoration.

It's time to sit back and relax, grab some popcorn, watch some movies, and get ready to experience God in a way that you were made to.

This is Phil Strangolagalli's first book and it was never planned.

Phil is recently married to his beautiful wife, Kathryn (the real Wonder Woman) and they don't live far from the Daily Bugle. In Phil's spare time you can find him taking long walks in the movie theater, teaching his wife about the complexity of film, and talking to strangers.

Phil is excited for how this book will reveal to you a side of Jesus that he believes people must know--an intimate, fun, actually very real God.

As a lover of movies this was a very fun yet touching Devo. I loved how the author had a scripture for each film and connected it to the Word. So fun to find Jesus in these 30 movies.

I really enjoyed this book and I could tell that movies really mean a lot to the writer and he put his heart in it. I loved the Bible references at the beginning of each movie and the nice devotional messages or ideas to make you think about God and Jesus and our relationship to them and the world. He packs a lot into these short movie chapters. I would re-read it as I like movies and I like to analyze them too.

The reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 is that I think the theology is off on a couple of his reviews/devotions and that is really important. They were nuanced and I think many would miss it and just absorb the feel good message. I get what he is trying to say, but it is slippery slope and I think that people would take it the wrong way and they will end up in the wrong place.

One I will mention is in the devotion for the movie Sinister. He writes that God is interested in our daily life (True!). But then it goes over the line: "He is watching you with an eye of admiration. If your life were a YouTube video, God would click the Like button over and over. How much of a following would that be? Think about it: the most loving, genuine, attractive Creator likes you."

NO HE DOESN'T! He LOVES us, he does not like or admire us. He would not click Like on our videos! The Cambridge Dictionary gives the following definition of admire: To admire is to find someone or something attractive and pleasant to look at, or to respect and approve of someone or their behaviour.

God does NOT approve of our behavior. If he approved of our behavior and respected us, he wouldn't have sent Jesus to die for us. We wouldn't need God, as it implies that our behavior is good enough and we don't need to change, we don't need to repent and we most certainly don't need God or need to change for him.

This is the typical liberal theology lie found in many churches today and it is wrong and misleading and it will lead people straight to hell. Yes I said it. Again, it is nuanced and very slippery slope and I can excuse perhaps a layman, but unfortunately this message is perpetuated in many big and vocal churches that claim to be Christ-followers and that is not a Christ-following message or the Gospel (the Good News!) This will just reinforce the lie they are being told.

If I had read this five years ago, I would have been "Yes! Jesus likes me! I guess I am not quite the sinner I thought I was! I guess I am doing ok." I would have overlooked his grace and mercy (as apparently I don't need it as much as I thought or I am not as bad as others). And Yes, I thought that at one time and other people still think it today. We are all born sinners.

I look at this book as an opportunity to learn discernment, though the modern filter of movies. I did like it and I would recommend it even though I ranted above.

Meh

It means well but falls short of a devotional. It’s more like a decent self help book. I did not enjoy it.
