No way. No how. Never. And if he calls me darlin' one more time...
He pushes buttons I didn't even know I had. Gabe freaking Barin. Fire to my ice. Walking mountain. Growly, alpha, and achingly kind. Last man on earth I want in my life.
But I've got three heaping problems: 1. My baby niece is missing. 2. Some psycho just slashed up my car. 3. My boss made Gabe my personal protector.
I'm a big girl in a tiny package. Sharp claws. Perfectly capable. So I'll ignore the jaw-dropping banter Goliath drops. I'll ignore how his Louisiana drawl melts damn near everything. I'll ignore how he's five times my size.
I'll even ignore the night hate gets complicated. Then our battle moves between the sheets. Gabe gives me a hundred new toe-curling reasons to curse his name. But there's one nagging thing I can't fight. What if Gabe freaking Barin is more than a gorgeous bad habit? What if he's the hero I never knew I'd need?

Nicole Snow is a Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author. She found her love of writing by hashing out love scenes on lunch breaks and plotting her great escape from boardrooms. Her work roared onto the indie romance scene in 2014 with her Grizzlies MC series.
Since then Snow aims for the very best in growly, heart-of-gold alpha heroes, unbelievable suspense, and swoon storms aplenty.
Current fan favorites include her Enguard Protectors series, accidental love novels, plus long beloved MC romance thrillers like the Grizzlies and Deadly Pistols.
I like the author's characterizations. Esp. for the men in this series. Riker was a very clear calm, mature, deeply wounded older man who knows exactly what he's doing. Still rivers run deep and all that.
Gabe is a gentle (very well endowed) giant who's been through some rough times. Who has a poet's soul. Who's perhaps a bit too innocent, like a very large puppy with a Louisiana accent.
That's all that sticks in my mind about these books. OK, I kinda still recall the h of Riker's book, but don't recall her name. And I recall his daughter.
The h of this book is Skylar, Sky. Badass ex-military just like Gabe. Some messed up times in her past too.
I just didn't like the one too many times she hurt him just bc she's wired to self-destruct. And after 2 of these books, I have to say that some things got repetitive. It was mainly thoughts going through 2 people's heads (in a very repetitive way), sprinkled with lots of sex post about 40% mark, dashed with a bit of kidnapping and intrigue (the parts I totally skip bc it's not that riveting).
I liked Riker's book better maybe bc of the single-dad trope and it was the first one by this author that I've read. The newness has kinda worn off tho. Added to the not so nice h, I had to make myself finish it and not just shelve it while I move onto something else (as nothing was waiting eagerly on my bookshelf for me to crack open, I just muddled through this one to the end).
Even the ending was repetitive. OK. You got married. You have sex. Then sleep and reflect how wonderful it is to be married to the person you love. I think it should have ended at "they were crazily thinking of getting married..." felt like the last 5% was superfluous page fillers.
Not sure if I want to continue on. I do have at least one other book in the same series by this author...
Oh, and I HATE the cover. And the damn title! What is the relevance???

Still Not Into You is a viciously, heart-wrenching journey that will leave you battered and scarred while it takes you to a beautifully, breathtaking place when you come crashing down. I was truly left in voiceless awe as I walked this dangerously heart-ripping road that pushed two very battled-hardened yet intoxicatingly vulnerable people to the breaking point and beyond. There is nothing easy or gentle about this story. It will rip you up and tear your heart and soul into pieces while forcing you to face the person that you truly are behind the mask and impenetrable walls. However, nothing is as rewarding or deeply satisfying as reading one of these uniquely crafted masterpieces by Nicole Snow.
Skylar is singularly focused on the most important mission of her life and she does not intend to fail. In fact, she can’t fail because if she does, she might just disappear. She doesn’t need help, protection, or anyone’s useless concern. She just needs to be left alone to accomplish her goal. The prize is something more precious than her life, and failure is NOT an option. Gabe has just found himself after years of being lost to family, friends, and his own mind. He needs something to keep him focused on the right path and show him that life is holds more beauty then ugliness. When he accepts a bodyguard position for his long-time friend Landon, he is eager to contribute to the good that he is begging to see around him. When he comes face to face with the livewire that is Skylar, he finds his breath completely stolen. His mind can’t process this beautiful hellion in heels, and only his heart seems to be able to function around her. Will Skylar come to see that trusting another person is the best decision she will ever make, or will she find herself drowning in depressing failure after another until she has missed her entire goal?
I was helpless to stop myself from falling in love with both Skylar and Gabe. They are two very complex and wonderfully unique people who find that they don’t have to walk through life carrying such heavy burdens all by themselves. Humans were created to be dependent upon each other. We aren’t made to be isolated, lonely islands, but instead we were created to be inter-connected bridges that share each other problems and rejoice in the other’s victories. When we lose that connection to those around us, we become utterly ineffective and dangerously isolated. Success only comes in community and joy only comes through that powerful and invaluable connection to family and friends.
I can’t adequately put into words just how perfectly Nicole Snow can ruin and revive you at the same time. She has a magnificently complex talent that never ceases to amaze me. Her utter brilliance shines through the pages of her books long before you can see any glimmer of hope. She doesn’t constrain herself to anyone’s definition of success. Instead, she allows her heart to guide and direct the path that her mind electrifies and her soul imbues with utter magic. I will always go to Snow for a book that will slay me so magnificently and then breath precious life back into me in a way that inks itself permanently on my very soul.
So, when I saw the title of this book, as I was in search of an 'enemies to lovers' story, I didnt even think twice when picking it up, even though I havent read this author before.
I expected a light, funny, sexy romance fling BUT what I GOT was a deep and insightful action suspense drama instead, go figure.
The characters are layered, both hiding their deep inner scars and fears behind the hard 'military' outfit.
Yes, you read it right!
BOTH characters, heroine being an ex-navy intelligence, is a determined, feisty hard ass in a firm body yet she's hiding her vulnerability behind the hard, icy and sharp posture and mouth.
Until HE enters her life (as a security detail cause her own life got endangered, and her boss asked his long time friend and army buddy to step in on a job) and becomes a patient, progressive mountain of a man who will protect and serve until his dying breath.
And her ice is melting whether she likes it or not, and she hates the fact that she's crumbling when she needs to find her missing niece...she can't afford to fall soft and deter her from the path of finding her no matter what...
But them she slowly realizes that she cant do everything alone...and that sometimes, letting go meand gaining more...
The only thing that sloved me down was the pacing. I would prefere it to be faster in more than one segment (action) cause it would highten the whole atmosphere and suspenseful touch in the story...while the interaction between h/H would build up on intensity of slowly bantering their way towards each other.
Read it after reading "Still not Yours" and giving it 4 stars.
This book was quite different. I didn't like the Heroine. She was too cold, mean and pushing everyone and everything away from her. She behaved like a spoiled brat. She's not the important part of the story (her niece is missing). The most important part should be getting her niece back. Right? And one would think the Heroine would do everything possible on this earth to reach that goal. But what does she do? She searches for her all alone. No help from private detectives, or from her co-workers? Who are all trained and who have the ability and resources to help her. But no, Heroine is too proud and wallows in self-hatred (because she thinks she's to blame for the kidnapping). And how can the co-workers just tell her "oh, everything will turn out to be ok. You'll see. You'll find her someday." I mean a young child is missing for a year now. This attitude was just so unreal. One of her co-workers is even a single dad to a daughter and even he just tells her that everything will be all right.
And then the FBI-bashing because they gave up searching for her niece after 48 hours. I just can't quite believe it. Heroine thinks it's the mean baby-daddy who has the girl. So the very logical thing would've been to investigate him, right?
I just found this book a mess. From the very beginning.
I am voluntarily reviewing this ARC copy of this book.
I was so happy when I saw Skylar had her own book after you meet her briefly in Still not over you. Skylar has spent the past year looking for her niece after she was taken during a shopping trip with her sister. She running out of options and all her leads are drying up and on top of that she is now being forced to put up with a bodyguard after her car was vandalised! She’s used to depending on herself for everything and had always been the strong one in the family. She doesn’t trust easily and men only seem to let her down and leave so getting close is not an option. But fate had another plan but will she accept the help being offered and trust the man being paid to watch her or will she run before he can let her down and leave like everyone else?
Gabe saw straight through Skylar, she radiates “stay away” in big capital letters and doesn’t shy away from saying it either. But there something about her that calls to him straight away. He’s going to help her find her niece and crack open her heart to get to the fierce feisty sunbeam she hides so well.
These two characters are electric together from start to finish, it’s an emotional tale of heartbreak, heat and hope. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and I’ve got my fingers crossed for a Ryker book.
Overall I enjoyed this book. Skylar and Gabe of course at first don't get along but by the end they are in love. They spend time trying to find her niece that has gone missing. As the mission goes on the more they want to become more. Sadly it takes them getting banged up pretty bad for them to come to their senses. Thankfully they got there in the end.
Skylar is a fire pistol. Gabe is a smoldering hulk of a giant. Both are wounded souls looking for a calm in the storm. From the moment they meet they are like flint striking a matchbox. They identify each other in the symmetries of their past lives. They come together in an explosive clash of will, bodies, hearts and souls and realize that they are the missing piece of each other. This book has mystery, romance and lots of steamy scenes. Everything to satisfy a great HEA.
I was given an advanced readers copy of this book and have decided to leave a voluntary honest review. I pictured Gabe a bit more demanding than he was, ki d of like Landon. But he still sweetheart. And damn good looking. And just all around cuddly teddy bear that will protect you. Skylar is extremely independent which is good and bad thing. Sometimes we need that someone to lean on or that shoulder to cry on. If not holding in when it comes out will be one hell of mess to clean up.
Sweet galloping stud muffins, this book is a whole lotta’ awesome in a thundering herd of different sexy, steamy ways! Basically, if there’s anything you like about romance, it’s in here…in the most satisfying ways. I know that’s a big promise, but Nicole Snow is more than just your average author. She is a wordsmith of the highest order, taking mere mortal words and creating ethereal pictures that illuminate the reader’s mind with a scope and sense rarely seen in this genre. Truly, her works stand alone in her field, and this story is another beautiful example of that.
Gabe Barin is the personification of Eroticus Giganticus (Great Big, Sexy Man). He’s so simple, he’s complicated—and hard to define in just a few words. If I had to narrow it down to just one word, I would choose “DIBS!” As in, I’m callin’ him, he’s mine, go find someone else. He. Is. That. Awesome.
Too bad the spitfire of a woman he’s been hired to guard, Skylar, doesn’t think as highly of him. She pretty much hates everything about him. She hates how big and well-muscled he is. She hates how intelligent he is, and his ability to banter with her. She hates his Southern manners, too. But perhaps most of all, she hates the little terms of endearment he uses for her, like Sunbeam. That drives her to the very brink of sanity.
It’s a good thing Gabe and Skylar have this amazing little thing called chemistry going on that simply can’t be snubbed forever. They are stellar when they start working together instead of bickering at each other (although the bickering is great fun to read…). Their hearts, souls, minds and bodies are so in tune with each other, they are a beautiful wonder. They completely fit, and their story totally satisfies all the senses.
This is a story that can be shared with your co-workers. Readers will find adult language as well as fiery hot love scenes (come on, he’s Eroticus Giganticus after all). You’ll also find an utterly fantastic love story written in amazing style that will have you begging for more of Gabe and Skylar’s tale.
I can’t believe I’m actually saying research the pattern of the sun and moon to this author! The Sun, the Moon, the planets, and the stars all rise in the east and set in the west because the Earth spins toward The East.
While this author has her character rhapsodize about the beauty of the moon rising over the Pacific Ocean in California, I am stunned that my 8 year old granddaughter knows more about basic science and geography.
The storyline might have had possibilities but was written in a way that was impossible to believe. Skylar is in a perfect position to get help finding her niece from an elite group of professionals but wants to do it alone. WTF! If your baby niece has been kidnapped, you pull out all the stops. You take any help you can get, especially professional help from your “family” at work. And they would have been on that case whether she asks for help or not.
If you want a book with sex scenes and aren’t picky about reality, you might like this. I already have the other 2 books so may try again just to see if they improve. I know some authors do look at reviews and try to improve their next book. I’m hoping this is one of them. And if you want to see the moon rise over the ocean, go to the East Coast, Atlantic Ocean.
Skylar is on her mission to bring back her lost niece home and she knows exactly who kidnapped her. Gabe is appointed her personal security by her boss when her safety is threatened. Being the spitfire and bold woman, Sky immediately hates Gabe and does her best to get rid of him. And Gabe, the sexy Southern gentleman is as patient as ever, sees her for who she is and edges his way past her walls. They both work on the case and end up catching the bad guy only to learn that it isn't him they must be after. Despite all the evidences, Sky still believes that Harmon's the bad guy. She blames herself for being so careless, breaks off things with Gabe and leaves to investigate alone where she gets a very vague feeling of the culprit. Meanwhile Gabe stumbles upon the slightest clue which leads him straight to the kidnapper where he is attacked to death. Is it too late for Sky to save Gabe and her niece? This was such a fun, flirty yet thrilling read. Oh my God!! Gabe and Sky they are unbelievable and perfectly made for each other. Their chemistry is off the charts and there couldn't be any better couple than they are. What I loved more is the author's reference to the color Blue (since it's my favourite color too) and all the nicknames of Skylar. Such an amazing story worth all your good time. I would definitely recommend it.
This is the second book in the Enguard Security series by Nicole Snow.
Skylar likes to do things on her own but her boss Landon knows she is wearing herself out and might put herself in danger in the process of looking for her niece Joannie, who is missing. So, Landon hires Gabe, a guy he knows from New Orleans. This man looks like a linebacker to Skylar’s pixie fairy body. Think David meeting Goliath. Quite a size difference. But Skylar makes up for her lack of height by being the gruffest MF around. She doesn’t have time for relationships but Gabe and his annoying southern charm is starting to wear her down.
I liked the dynamic here. But Skylar was a bit too gruff for me and I think most men would have given up on her after she pushed them away again and again. I didn’t appreciate how she treated Gabe when all he was really there for was a job. In the beginning it was just a job but they scraped away the layers of resistance between them and the outside world and began to see each other as possible mates.
For someone who was as smart as Skylar I am surprised it took her so long to suspect who the real kidnapper was. Even with my few reservations, it was a wonderful ride.
No one does sexy romantic suspense like Nicole Snow.
So I love love Nicole Snow's MC books and I've read a few of her others. This one was just okay. I know that Sky is damaged and would really make Gabe work for it and she did. Gabe was just too sweet, a giant sweet man that was lovely. I have a hard time with rough heroines. Again I understand why she was the way she was but I was just missing something from her.
The one thing that made this a little less was who the villain is and the hard time they had taking him down. considering how he's described it just seemed so ridiculous. This book was fine. Not great and definitely not the worst thing in the world.
Skyler has her sights set, and she is determined not to detour off that path, but when she is in danger, her boss decides she needs a protector. Gabe is the man for the job, and the chemistry between these two is explosive. This is a wonderful story which is well written and flawless, with drama, twists, passion, witty banter, and is a gritty and heartbreaking read. I was intrigued and hooked throughout this addictive page turner, and I cannot wait to read more of this talented authors’ work, which I highly recommend for all readers.
Still not into you by Nicole Snow a five-star read that will astound you. What a story, I adored reading about Pixie and her man mountain protector. Skylar ‘Sunbeam’ Szabo is a woman who many would run from a fight with, but someone out there doesn’t seem as scared and is out to get her, she doesn’t need a protector but when her boss gets his buddy man mountain Gabe Barin to watch her back and help out the drama starts, as well as the entertainment. This was a great story and the passion is felt from all of the characters, when the baddie is revealed will you know who it was? The red herrings and plot twists really keep you on the edge of your seat. Brilliant story and so well written.
OMG Nicole this was a smash, This Skylar and Gabe Story I couldn't put it down. Skylar trying find her Niece, Gabe was ask to keep skylar safe, Gabe and Skylar set the pages on fire, there chemistry was 100% sizzling HOT. This is full emotion action plus some twists along the way. I definitely recommend Its a must read, I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy GET YOUR COPY HERE! Okay, it might seem trite, but I swear this is going to be my favorite book by Nicole Snow. I have read all of her books and this one had me on the edge of my seat. Yes, I still wanted to headslap Skylar for being an obnoxious witch, but I understand the trauma she went through in her life. Gabe was an awesome, patient, loving man and I love when big guys fall so hard they can't see straight. I'm happy he was there for Skylar. I am gonna go out on a limb here and say this was Ms. Snow's best book yet.
Skylar and Gabe were fantastic! I fell in love with them from the beginning. The chemistry between these two was hot and so we're their steamy moments. Along with the sexy stuff was some drama, suspense, and twists. This was well written and I didn't want to put it down. I would definitely recommend reading this one. *I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. This is my honest review.*
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. I liked Gabe, the only thing that bothered me of Gabe was his like of Skylar. Skylar was horrible, horrible, I didn't get why he liked her. She was mean and petty and ok let me try to understand her, someone kidnapped her niece right from under her so she had all this anger, well there is anger and just bitchiness, and she was the latter. I almost stopped reading because of how mean she was but I made myself continue I was enjoying book and even seemed to mellow out from my dislike of her and she was doing good and then went back to her assholishness, Gabe saved the book for me and the actual storyline.
This book was an utter experience... Smart, fun, sexy, heart-wrenching, hot as fire, hard as nails--it made me smile with joy and bite my cheeks with anxiety. Emotional depth, a whole bear of warm fuzzies, and an alpha hero who wrapped me around his finger and made me fall for him.
Well done, Ms. Snow. I will be reading your other books.
One complaint. I am pretty sure Glocks do not have a manual safety. Having had to carry one for work before. Ex military may make a different hand gun choice SIG or Beretta just the only thing that disappointed. But still an interesting story.
Skyler is a pint size ex military bodyguard who is looking for her missing niece in her freetime. But Gabe comes in to watch her back and becomes so much more to her in this exciting book.
I really enjoyed Skylar & Game's book. Lots of suspense to keep you o n the edge of your seat. Great book. I'm voluntarily leaving an honest review for a copy of the book.
I had more of a hard time then I thought I would with this book, I thought it would be more suspenseful or action packed than it was. Our hero Gabe is a bodyguard, our heroine works at a security firm, and both are ex military. If that doesn’t scream action packed I don’t know what does. Add in the fact that Skylar’s niece has been kidnapped and I was just expecting more, I don’t know, something. My biggest issue with the book though was the authors writing style. So much of this book was just internal thoughts. I mean so much time was spent just thinking about things, thinking about the kidnapping, thinking about her sister, thinking about each other. It got boring. Even the scenes where things happened, liked the love scenes, involved so much thought and not nearly enough words or actions. I also had some issues with Skylar’s character. She’s ex military intelligence, and it seems like she reacts oddly to new information about the kidnapping. When he one suspect is seriously in the clear, she just refuses to give up on him, unwilling to even entertain the idea of another, it just seems to me that a military strategist wouldn’t do that. Also I had issue with the fact that she worked for a high end security firm and they didn’t seem to be involved in helping her find her niece at all, I mean the author makes a point that they are like family, but they don’t really help her at all. It was weird for me. I did like Gabe, he was a super sweet guy. Didn’t love his nickname thing, but other than that he’s a good guy. Don’t have much more to say about him. Overall it was just the writing style that didn’t work for me.
Will contain spoilers from previous stories in the series - Recommend that you read in order - Very interesting!
For adults only (18+ years). Contains subject matter that may be a trigger, or offensive to some. This includes adult language throughout, steamy adult intimate scenes and violence (i.e. kidnapping, threats, fighting, death, etc.). If any of these are a trigger, or offensive to you, then this may not be the book or series for you.
This is a very interesting story that I enjoyed despite not having read any of the previous related stories. Just be warned that there will be some spoilers from the 2 stories from the Enemies to Lovers series. I am still looking forward to reading the others, but don't know how much I will be surprised by what could be major spoilers. I gave this story 4 stars because I could determine the plot pretty early (it is a curse) and found that Skylar's wariness could play a little one note after a while, even though the author did a great job outlining what caused her to be this way.
Here is a high level overview of how the story begins:
Skylar is a tactical and a logistics planner for a private security company founded by Landon Strauss. She is former military and been described by some of her co-workers at Enguard Security as being robotic, but she has been taught by life to keep her fear and emotions in check. Otherwise they lead to mistakes and that can make you vulnerable and she has never been that. She also has great situational awareness and that is how she knew her car had been tampered with long before she got close enough to see that it had also been vandalized.
Skylar was the last one to leave work, but that was normal. No one reported her car being broken into, so she is not sure when it occurred but she approaches it with caution. Once she verifies there is no one in it, she checks to make sure her gun is still locked in her glove box and checks out the damage. There is a message carved into her dashboard and a rather large knife stuck into her shredded leather seats. Even though her car is a beat-up Buick, it is still going to cost a fortune to repair the damage.
The message tells Skylar that this was her last warning to stay away from her, that she is their's. Skylar has spent almost a year searching for her kidnapped niece, Joannie. That little girl was the light of her life, as well as her sister's, Monika, who had become a veritable ghost of herself since her daughter was taken. Skylar could feel the rage rising within herself despite the message also giving her hope that her niece was alive. She knows that she will never stop searching no matter what kind of threats she receives.
The next morning her boss and good friend, Landon, sees the damage done to her car when they both arrive to work and flips. He lets Skylar know that she is getting a guard whether she wants one or not. The situation is getting too serious and the investigation she is conducting at night is taking its toll.
Landon hires one of his military brothers, Gabe Barin, to guard Skylar's back. He warns Gabe that she is a spit fire, a hellion and will be a challenge, but that is why the pay is so good. Since Gabe is so patient, Landon also believes he is the only one that can deal with her, but no touching as Skylar wouldn't be the only one to kick his butt.
When Gabe left the military he was a little aimless and ended up working for a private overseas military contractor and got into some things that he regretted. Then he found out that his dad had alzheimer's and one day he just disappeared. They were able to find him several years later, but the time was lost and the damage was done, so he passed away shortly thereafter. For a while Gabe drifted along, but he didn't like who he was previously and was looking for a purpose and challenge.
Landon told him about Skylar's niece and that she needed someone to watch her back. No matter her skills, no one could be on guard 24 / 7. Plus someone was out to get her and Skylar had been running herself ragged and it was obvious even if she didn't want to acknowledge it. She was the last one to leave work, then researching / investigating until the early hours of the morning before sleeping a couple of hours and returning to work. Landon tells him he will set it up with Skylar.
Gabe goes to Enguard Security and waits in the parking lot for someone matching Skylar's description, which was very generic, but since she was the last one to leave, she was easy to spot. Gabe was not prepared for how he would feel when she could see her clearly. She was clearly ex-military, but he could tell she was just like him. Despite the warning from Landon about staying away, he could already feel his heart aching for her and an overwhelming desire to protect her.
When Skylar approached Gabe, she layed out her expectations. Gabe found it hard to contain his laughter ... she was meaner than an alligator and prettier than a peacock. This was going to be fun.
I am going to stop there as I don't want to accidentally provide any spoilers or twists.
This is a wonderfully, well-written, emotionally charged story that has you in its grip from start to finish. Skylar has been looking for her lost niece Joannie for months, but little does she know that all her leads are pointing in the wrong direction. Gabe is tormented, not only by the loss of his father, but that he too might end up with the same debilitating disease his father had. Brought in as Skylar’s bodyguard, Gabe soon becomes a distraction she cannot afford, but Gabe is patient and bides his time. This is a lengthy book, but the author brings it to life with an amazing storyline that is both exceptionally descriptive and emotional, while holding the reader’s attention throughout. This is certainly a book I would have no hesitation in recommending.
Skylar has been looking for her niece for almost a year; she needs to believe Joannie isn’t dead. Even if the police and FBI have given up on her, Skylar will not; she can’t. All she has to do is prove that Joannie’s father, Harmon, is the culprit. Fear is an irrational emotion Skylar doesn’t need, but someone has broken into her car and left a warning; for her this isn’t a threat, it’s a sign of hope. When Skylar learns that Gabe is being brought in as as her bodyguard, she decides to play along; Skylar is better than half the men at Enguard and she can drop anyone in two seconds flat. Gabe still remembers the day he came back from his last army tour, expecting a perfect family reunion; instead there was not an ounce of recognition in his father’s eyes, a fate that one day could be his. That is why Gabe writes; every bit of life he wants to remember. After his tour in Iraq and a short lived disastrous stint in private security, Gabe is looking for a purpose in life; anything to make it worthwhile again and his old friend Landon has just the job. Landon and Gabe are old friends and have history, but more importantly Gabe might be the only one patient enough to deal with Skylar. Gabe is not sure what to expect, but he recognises Skylar’s stride; it’s ex-military. Gabe sees Skylar; she is like him and he already feels a need to protect her. Gabe knows the kind of things someone has to go through to have that hard, empty look in their eyes to wall off everything both good and bad. There is just something about Skylar and the way she holds herself, as if even before the military she had never known what it was like to have anyone shelter her and keep her safe. Skylar’s bluntness is refreshing, while the complete once over she gives him says he doesn’t measure up. Gabe is just here to keep her safe, but she is a hard one to figure out. Landon didn’t warn him just how interesting this job was going to be. Skylar has always been a solitary person; just fine with people thinking she is odd and mean and someone worth avoiding; she has never had anyone put into words that feeling that makes her keep people at arm’s length, but Gabe understands her. In another life he might be her type, but not now, not like this, not when he has been forced on her and keeps looking at her like he wants to know her, when the only thing he really needs to know is to stay out of her way. Skylar cannot afford a distraction like Gabe, while Gabe thinks she is a woman worth fighting for, even if she does set him up. Gabe has always been good with his own company and doesn’t know why its not enough all of a sudden. Skylar may think Harmon is guilty of taking Joannie, but all the evidence points to the contrary. Gabe wants Skylar to let him in, but never at the cost of her own pain, but how long were they going to pretend that what they have is strictly business. May be Skylar does understand Gabe after all, the same way he wants to understand her, but he is losing her every minute she spends chasing down false leads and there is nothing he can do to stop it; no way he can save her. Skyla knew she had chased Gabe off, told him to go when all she really wants is for him to stay. Gabe knows he shouldn’t have left Skyla, shouldn’t have let her chase him off, shouldn’t have let her leave alone, running after dead ends that could get her hurt. May be Gabe isn’t her real boyfriend, but he is her real bodyguard and he loves her; that is why he walked away because there is only so much pain a man can take. Soon it becomes evident who the true kidnapper is and it is someone Skylar has trusted her whole life; he has Joannie, Gabe and now her, but Skylar will not give up without a fight, to save Joannie to save Gabe and to save herself. Then may be she can have a life she truly deserves. A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.
