I originally purchased the first book in this series (The Darkest Minds) a while back while my car was at the mechanics. An odd thing to say, I know. How it came to me purchasing the book was whilst in the waiting area of the mechanics there was a young girl reading book two (Never Fade) sitting with her mother across from me. She kept flipping back between 2 pages re-reading a particular part of the story and was smiling so much it was contagious.
I was so curious as to what she was reading to produce that level of happiness. It's rare to see these days.

I took out my phone and found the book she was reading and discovered it was a part of a series, The Darkest Minds. I found the first book and purchased it then and there after reading a little about its storyline.

I was in the middle of a series at the time I received it, so I placed it on my bookshelf to start at a later date. The only thing I regret is not starting the series sooner!! When I was halfway through the first book I purchased the entire boxed set in one go.

I have read MANY series and SO MANY books, and it's been a long time since one really sucked me in. The Darkest Minds series was brilliant, and I feel that word does not do it justice. Alexandra Bracken has truly mastered the art of writing. I was moved through such an amazing story, with its ups and downs, its emotional cliff hangers, heartbreaking losses, and victorious triumphs- this is a series you MUST read.

Although I have completed the 4 books (The Darkest Minds, Never Fade, In The Afterlight, and Through The Dark), I've just started the 5th book: The Darkest Legacy, that came after the 4 originals above (review to come), I'm equally excited and sad to see how it all comes to a close.

No matter what genre you favour, you will still be able to appreciate how well The Darkest Minds series comes together and how Bracken walks you through her story. Incredible.

Let me know what you thought of The Darkest Minds series,

I chose to review the set because these four books really come together to make the perfect story. This is one of my favorite series of all time because it gives deep understandings of the characters, who have every detail about themselves told in these books. Ruby, the main character, is just a child when the nightmare begins. A disease wipes out most of the worlds children, and in a very unusual way. She is among those left and is taken to a camp to be fixed. There she finds what she can do, and what others can do. I also love how the book isn't in chronological order all the time, because it has flashbacks throughout the series. You get to see ruby grow as she navigates her new "home". You see her make friends and lose some, and you get to see the story from multiple points of view. I would recommend this series to people who don't usually love to read because it will suck you in very fast and is very easy to get through!

I’ve read this series like 2 or 3 times and it’s a very fun and easy read. it doesn’t get boring. i would recommend this book to anyone who wants to start reading dystopian books for sure.
the plot of the books actually is relevant in a way for today and definitely makes you think about the current state of our world, especially with the way the pandemic was and how our government handled it.

my one critique would be that the dialogue in the book is oftentimes a bit cringey or artificial if that makes sense.
this series is great to casually read to get out of a reading slump or something.

This is a really great series. I would be enjoyable for both adults and children from 6th grade and up. Doesn't have anything overly inappropriate for middle school aged children unlike some dystopian series do.

I really enjoyed these books. It's set in a dystopian/semi-post-apocalyptical world (specifically the USA) where an epidemic caused children to either die a horrible death or develop psionic powers. Afraid of the powers, the government rounded the special children up and locked them away in prison camps. The protagonist, Ruby, is one such child. The series of books focuses on her escape, meeting others who have also escaped, and living a life on the run while working with renegade organizations to try to reveal the truth about the epidemic and free as many other children as they can. We get a peak at some of the other character's POV's and lives outside of their connection to Ruby, and I really enjoyed that, too. It made them more three-dimensional, giving them live and motives of their own. There is a fifth book not a part of the box-set called The Darkest Legacy which takes place a few years after the original series and is from the POV of a different character, Zu. She was very young in the first book, so it was interesting to see the woman she became through it all. I'd definitely recommend the series. I'm told there's a movie based off the books, too, that I'm looking forward to seeing.

I purchased The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken because I liked the movie. The story followed the film closely, which is unusual for movies today. Studios love to tweak with an excellent plot, add characters, or “freshen” the plot to satisfy what they think society wants.
It is a dystopian story about a young girl with extraordinary mental abilities and survival efforts. She is a strong character, and I want her to succeed. Like in the movies, her new-found friends are not the best, but they try hard.
There were a few issues with this story. I felt like Alexandra could have explained things. Instead, the reader had to do a lot of guessing. How did all this start? What was her motivation? Also, the first half of the story was out of order. I would have preferred a typical family at the beginning, with bad things happening and then where the real story began. But I get it—writers drama things up by switching the order.
Overall, this was a good read, and I enjoyed it.

The series started out fairly strong, but slowly got worse and worse. By the end of the second book I felt like I was in lord of the rings with all the freaking traveling, but at the same time like i was in mockingjay with all the chaotic action. It was such a mess.
The whole series is just written so unrealistically.
It's one of those stereotypical cookie cutter YA dystopian series where you have a bunch of kids acting like adults, and adults acting like they have no brains, or are simply not in the picture at all.
This series isn't worth the time it takes to read it, with each novel being approximately 520 pages long. Don't waste your time--there's far better YA dystopians out there.

My second favorite book if all time. I read this a while back and loved the journey with Ruby. Wasn't my all time favorite because I feel like Alexandra Bracken gave a great feeling in the first book, but in the second book when Ruby joins the children's league away from the Black Betty boys and girl it makes for a good plot in the long run but it was just hard to read. This is completely opinionated and I loved the series overall.

I got through these books quite quickly but with long pauses in between separately purchasing the 5th & final book in the series. Great story line, easy reading with loveable characters. Plenty of action and adventure. Originally gifted to my daughter who still hasn’t read it but highly recommend to young and old. Reminds me of a mix of the Divergent series and Hunger Games. It’s a shame they didn’t make this into a Netflix series after poor film reviews.

Follows teenagers with special abilities after a disease kills most children. Ruby escapes from a government camp and joins a group of outcasts seeking safety and freedom while confronting oppressive forces that threaten their lives. The series explores themes of friendship and resistance in a dystopian world.

I'm on the 2nd book at the moment. I LOVE this series! I watched the movie, "The Darkest Minds," and I really liked it except the fact that it ended on a cliff hanger. I knew it was based off a book so I decided to buy them and read them. I finished the first book in 1 week and started the 2nd book on Saturday and am almost done. Hopefully I will finish the last 2 before May 1.

When reading these books I don’t think I ever put them down. These books were never slow moving, you were constantly engaged and you fell in love with every character. I cannot even express my love for these books and I wish I could read them again for the first time.

I love this books series, I had already read this, but I really enjoyed the short stories. Clancy’s especially. I loved the repetition at the end of each segment, and how that tied it in. Bracken is truly a master of her craft
