Cougar Falls #2

In Plain Sight

Rate this book
The second stand-alone romance in New York Times bestseller Marie Harte’s small town, shapeshifter romance series: Cougar Falls.

In a choice between fight or flight, love makes the final decision.

Cullen Whitefeather is Ac-taw—a fierce golden eagle shapeshifter. The ultimate predator, he doesn’t shy away from confrontation…unless it involves one tempting, smart-mouthed woman. The woman destined to be his mate. The woman who doesn’t even know he’s alive.

Sarah Duncan made one mistake years ago and hasn’t stopped paying for it since. Tired of the town’s treatment, she finally tells the truth about what really happened and pays a hard price. Her clan wants to silence her. Permanently.

Rescue comes from a completely unexpected source—Cullen, a man who can barely seem to string two sentences together. Yet his fierce protectiveness, compassion, and bewitching touch are worth more than a thousand words.

With Sarah so close, Cullen is losing his mind—and his heart. She says she wants to leave, and the raptors want her gone. But if there’s one thing Cullen’s good at, it’s a fight. And he’s not letting her go without one.

This title has been previously released.

Warning: This book contains a woman done wrong, birds of prey, sexy men who can’t talk to women, and red hot lovin’ that’ll make you wish you could fly.

“If you’re looking for a sizzling romance that will captivate and snare your heart, In Plain Sight is just for you. Marie Harte has created an amazing world where shifters of all kinds exist, in a place as beautiful as it is dangerous.” Long and Short Reviews

Despite the constant feeling of "been there, read that", this was still a nice, little PNR story of a male shifter knowing the female is his mate, yet afraid she wouldn't love him because of her past experience with the opposite sex. And although her inner animal shrieks at her that he is hers the female is afraid of falling in love without receiving it in return.

Luckily it was a short-story, because sooner or later it would've become tiresome. But, thanks to its shortness, it all fell nicely, neatly, and most importantly quickly into place with the requisite HEA in the form of an outpour of love and affection, and an additional victory of good over "evil".

Template-ish, but cute.

June 2014: "The guy that barely speaks hasn't professed his undying love for me, I guess I should sacrifice myself." - Dumbass heroines.

Nice little story, but the female MC, Sarah, is a moron. I mainly kept reading for the continuing story arc that will take me into the next book.

August 2018 reread: Sarah is still a bit slow on the uptake, but I enjoyed it more this time around as I knew what I was getting into. So +1 star on my original 3 star review, because Sarah being dumb is really the only problem and that's probably worth -1 star. Go team.

These books are like chocolate covered potato chips and being wafer thin is a part of the appeal.

In the second book in the Cougar Falls series, eagle shapeshifter Sarah Duncan finally stands up for herself. After years of being considered the “town slut” and having the leaders of her raptor clan harass her, she decides to leave Cougar Falls once and for all. Unfortunately, a group of female raptors attack Sarah with the intent on killing her before she can leave.
Cullen Whitefeather has been secretly in love with Sarah since he first saw her and never knew about the rumors surrounding her past. He saves her life and takes her home with him, and his wildest fantasies soon come true.
I really liked both Sarah and Cullen. Friendship bloomed fast between them, and romance soon followed. Though Sarah never deserved the scorn she’d dealt with, it made her strong and smart. Cullen was so shy and patient with her, definitely a dreamy hero. His brothers and mother were awesome characters too.
The numerous sex scenes slowed the pacing a little, but I enjoyed the story and want to read more in the series.

I found this story followed the same trope as Book 1: Alpha Male wanting roughish sex often, as he is driven to 'spread his seed' and Female agrees to unprotected instant sex because they are Fated Mates.
Insta-lust sexual encounters a bit over the top and some of the writing feels dated and without subtlety, compared to other paranormals I have read.

This book has tiresome negative self-talk by both Hero and Heroine, however I did like this book tackled slut-shaming of the Heroine.

Although the series focuses on the various sexual encounters between Fated Mates, I really liked the plots and background stories of the characters in this series, and feel it would benefit from a re-edit and updating.

Short read.
Really nasty bird leaders use and abuse their power.
I felt sorry for Sarah for the way she was treated but why had she kept silent when she had done nothing wrong?
Cullen was the least alpha male ever. He is supposed to be tongue tied but surely he would rather talk than lose Sarah.
Felt rushed at the end as we don’t get any of the big challenge scene.
Read and reviewed years ago but original review is missing.
Reread through Kindle Unlimited.

Great story

Great story. Love Sarah and Cullen. Sarah was done so wrong. Everyone, even me, has the wrong idea about her. She's so strong to have stayed and put up with everything she did. Cullen is so cute with his shyness. Can't help but love him and his family.

Second book in the series

I didn’t enjoy this as much as I did the first book, but I think it’s because there was more negativity in this one than the first. I was looking for another sappy romance but it was well written and easy to read!

I'm rounding up to 4 stars.

The book is a bunch of erotic scenes strung together, with a meager side plot sprinkled in. I like the paranormal world, and we do get a lot of it. However, nothing about the shifter world was new or inventive, just well done for a short erotic romance.

This story did not disappoint at all. Cullen is the epitome of the strong silent type, but he wants his woman and won't let anyone stop him. Not even her.

I loved book 1 in this series so I had to check out book 2. I loved the main characters in this book and love that their personalities are like that of a bird. I love that each of the characters felt rounded and developed through out the book. I love that romance was slow and not rushing through like most shifter books. This book has an amazing plot that will leave you hanging till the very end.

The author Marie Harte always does such a nice job with her Shifter stories. I am pretty much obsessed with her Cougar Falls series. In Plain Sight is book two in the Cougar Falls series. This story is about bird shifters Cullen and Sarah. Poor Sarah falls for a guy and sleeps with him and later discovers that he is married/mated to another. The guy is a real piece of shit and brags to his friends about Sarah pretty much ensuring gossip would start up and she would be labeled the town slut. The jerk is the leader of one of the Actaw clans and the men really go out of their way to make Sarah's life miserable. Finally Sarah has enough and just snaps. In front of a whole busy diner she tells her side of the story and then leaves to pack up her stuff and move out of Cougar Falls. Cullen is also a bird shifter and he has a thing for Sarah. When he realizes she is going to leave for good he intercedes. I don't want to give away the whole plot of the story but he ends up taking care of Sarah after a fight with the jerks wife. I like Cullen as a character because he is not the typical smooth talking Hero. At first he comes across as really abrupt but it quickly becomes endearing once you get a peek into his head and you figure out he is just afraid to blow it with Sarah. Once he finally starts talking to Sarah in more then one word answers its game on! This book is not too long. It took about three/four hours to finish it. The perfect length for an evening of entertainment. I enjoyed this book and I think you will too.

Not a BAD story.
In general, this book had a decent story-line. I gave it three stars because there was very little background information given on the two main characters. We're supposed to believe Cullen has a crushing on Sarah for over six months, and can barely speak to her, yet after he rescues her he seems to speak to her just fine, then has difficulty speaking to her again, then he doesnt again. Not to mention he has a picture of her he had taken and kept in his wallet for months, but it never mentions how (or why) he took a picture of her without her noticing. We don't find out about it till almost the end of the book.
The sex scenes were good, but the author didn't seem to spend much time putting detail in to anything else in the story. Sarah challenges the clan leader's wife to a fight that is supposed to be to the death, or if the loser surrenders, she and her family must leave the town forever. The fight is not described at all; it goes from Sarah issuing the challenge to Sarah and Cullen relaxing together later in the evening. There was other parts that seem to drag, they would be thinking about what ifs, how comes, could he or she really love me, etc that I just skipped over it, to get back to the story. Overall I will get the next one cause I like the series.

I've thought cat shifters were the sexiest shifters, the wolves were wily and badass in fights, while the bears were just that...dangerous, cuddly teddy bears. I never once put much thought into the birds until now.

Honestly, if I hadn't enjoyed the first book in this series so much, I probably wouldn't have given this particular book a second chance, but I did. Boy, am I glad. Sarah's story broke my heart because I've been there, ostracized by rumors and misinformation. But like any self respecting badass eagle, she was a fighter.

And isn't it so true that it's always the ones sitting right under your nose that you tend to overlook? How fortunate for her that mister strong, silent, and fierce noticed her? Yeah, he gave sexy bird shifter a whole new meaning. Yup! I've changed my mind. Birds of prey like eagles, ones who will battle to the death at high altitudes for you, are definitely high on the sexy scale, too.

Such a fun, worthwhile read!
