It's 1989, the cusp of a brand new decade, a young woman deals with injustice the only way she knows how, and two friends give their hands. Twenty-one years later, that promissory note needs to be be collected, but who answers? The girl: now an educator. The second: a man of hard business and soft morals. The third: a family man who loved that young woman as much as he loves his living daughter. So, who indeed? Blood has been spilled, but from that wound, a freshet must arise...
Adam Burnett writes when he can, sleeps when he needs to, and eats only when absolutely necessary. Every morning he wakes up tired and every night he goes to bed wide awake.
His goal is to write books that smell like old books and believes that if there isn’t a noticeable crack in the spine of the book you are currently reading, then you are reading it incorrectly.
He tends to write when it’s dark out which, he admits, probably has an influence on in his writing.
“The dark is such an interesting place—who knows what happens there? As a writer I try to find out, to shed some light—not a lot, just a little: a lone matchstick’s worth—on the shadows. See who’s more afraid—me, or whatever it is I find there.”
When not chewing on a pen, Adam also whittled away his days as photographer, English teacher, dance instructor, door to door salesman, bartender, fry cook, bouncer, busboy, hardware salesman, cleaner, and sexual ninja. He promises that only one of those jobs was made up.
He lives in Toronto, Canada with his wife and son, and is gearing up to publish his new novel This Rock of Death coming in June 2023 in paperback, ebook and audiobook.
I know it's a hackneyed phrase, but, I couldn't put this book down. It pulled me into the world of its three main protagonists like a maelstrom, swirling deep - deeper and darker than I probably wished to go.
If you're interested in more than your typical thriller (though this book does deliver on the suspense), and care to dig into something more psychological, more thoughtful, and ultimately more disturbing, then you just found your next read.
Adam Burnett's The Project will transport you back to those precarious years of pre-adulthood, and allow you to explore it through the eyes of three budding serial killers, who I guarantee you will find to be disturbingly sympathetic. Burnett writes the pathos of these three with so much depth, you'll swear you know them... and then be terrified that you do. In other words, it's a touching read that touches you where you don't want to be touched.
Burnett has captured the essence of a page-turner: captivating characters with depth and a plot that never ceases to surprise. By dividing the story between the past and present, the author allows us to dive into our own souls; we all know that our past never really leaves us. In the case of Jill, Johnny, and Jack, that is all too true. It may disrupt your sleep but you'll wish it never ends.
If this is the authors first novel I can’t wait to see what’s next Abandon amusement parks 80s references and brutal torture it’s like it was written just for me Michael does a great job narrating do yourself a favor and check it out I received a free review audiobook and voluntarily left this review
Definitely a story that keeps you guessing! Loved jumping back and forth between decades to follow the main characters and the vivid descriptions of their physical and emotional states stick with you. I could definitely see this as a film, especially with all the 1980s nostalgia.
Burnett draws the reader into the twisted minds of 3 teenagers, while building the story to a gripping climax... proving that the past will always find a way of coming back.
This book was a real page turner! Within the first chapter you are aware of the impending doom and dreading the road this group of three is heading down...they do not disapoint. Lots of gore at times. I enjoyed the true mystery the author created as well as his in depth character development. I would highly recommend this book.
