Is there any hope for men and women in the "voluntary slavery" of pornography addiction? Deepak Reju shows that this worship problem can be fought only with a greater love for Christ. This month-long devotional, with reflection questions and practical suggestions for action, gives you the encouragement and resources you need to fight in the war being waged for your soul every day.
Deepak Reju, MDiv, PhD, serves as the Pastor of Biblical Counseling and Family Ministry at Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, DC, and is a contributing author in Christ-Centered Biblical Counseling and the forthcoming Scripture and Counseling. Deepak and his wife, Sarah, have been married over ten years and have five children.
Simple, faithful, readable. Not the most riveting in terms of writing but the truths were so sweet and I think palatable, especially if you are entrenched in sin/ not thinking clearly.
I read this alongside a large group from our church doing a purity challenge this month (with the intent to learn more from a Biblical Counseling perspective.) There are probably better resources for the counselor but this is definitely something I’d recommend to anyone (male or female) struggling with sexual addiction.
Amazing to know that God’s word has hope for even the darkest of struggles.
This would be a helpful supplemental resource for someone who has recently brought their sin into the light and who is taking steps to get healthy. It’s not ground breaking, but it’s solid overall and some of the days are especially helpful in terms of what it looks like to yes to Jesus and no to sin in this area.
It’s crazy how much good advice the Bible has for a topic like pornography. I was very impressed Deepak's ability to take big counciling thoughts and condense them in two page devotionals…
if you are struggling with porn, I would highly recommend going through this book with your accountability group…
Loved the format of this small book. Not only is the content Biblical and helpful for anyone fighting to be pure in their life, the manner in which it is written is helpful.
This would be a solid tool to use to walk through with anyone that is struggling with pornography, purity, and their mind. Each day's "devotional" will challenge the reader in some aspect of this topic. At the end of each day, there are questions for the reader to ponder and reflect upon.
An excellent book to use as a conversation starter/homework for counseling discussions. Such a hope giving, wise, and gospel centered resource for people struggling with various forms of sexual immorality. I highly recommend it!
I’m looking for a resource to walk through with students struggling with pornography. The strength of this book is its brevity. 2 page devotional, grounded in scripture. Easy to read and could take 2 min to do.
For some guys I work with, something more rigorous to really get them considering the hard work change can be. But for many guys that haven’t ever made habits of time in the word, this is a great place to start.
I started this book earlier this year because we had recommended it to a student in our youth group. Then it got stuffed in a pile of books and forgotten about. I found it a few weeks ago and picked up where I left off. This book is an excellent, gospel-centered resource for fighting not just pornography but really any sin. I will definitely read this again and have several pages dog-eared for future reference.
Just about the best thing in print on the subject! Best resource in the 31 day series and incredibly useful for counseling and person growth in your passion for Christ. This book challenges the reader to fight fire with fire, and stokes the flames of a greater passion for Christ in the battle against sin. Just an excellent resource for the church and the Christian alike! Highly recommend!
This is a great ministry resource for discipling men and women who are struggling with porn and lust. I am consistently impressed with Deepak and want to dive deeper into his bigger works on the subject. So far, he seems to helpfully bridge the divide between genders and disciplines, biblical counseling and psychology, that often make books on this subject very one-sided.
He targets the head and the heart with Scripture and saturates it with God’s grace. The gospel is the answer to the struggling heart of the believer. If you’re struggling or you know someone who is, bless them by buying this book for him.
I thought this little book was immensely helpful, convicting, and encouraging. It's not a magic bullet, but it's a great supplemental resource that demonstrates a) how to connect scripture to a fight against sexual sin and b) how to fight practically, in the midst of temptation. Definitely one that I'll keep on speed dial.
Very helpful resource in the battle against lust. I'd pair this with Heath Lambert's Finally Free as a great one-two punch for the initial battle, but I'd encourage people to keep going back to this one for maintaining a pure walk.
Dee is a seminary friend, a great, gifted man. Grateful for this book. I intend to give it to the men of my church. This is filled with great practical advice, rooted in biblical theology.
An average book on the topic. It was confusing on the categories of progressive sanctification. Unclear if it was for a Christian or unbeliever or was trying to write to both at times. Finally Free is superior.
Read this with the men in our church. Simple, helpful daily reminders from Scripture to wage war against your sin, presented in a practical and digestible format. Enjoyed talking about it with other guys as we were reading.
This is a great book to read with those entrenched in this sin. Deepak Reju consistently points back to the gospel and to life in the local church to help kill sexual sin.
I had a mild addiction to pornographic literature but found this book unhelpful. I feel that this book is more for men and those who have a more severe addiction to viewing Pornography. This book was not what I expected and I found it unhelpful. I was given this book by Netgalley and the publisher. This is my voluntary review.
