Forgotten secrets. Forgotten lies. A family legacy…A determined killer.
On the outskirts of Singing River, Wyoming, a couple dies in a fire that ravages their remote mountain home. Everyone believes it’s a tragic accident—except FBI profiler Riley Lambert. She isn’t convinced, and neither is her fiancé ex–Navy SEAL turned sheriff Thayne Blackwood. When they discover that the couple’s daughter is missing, Riley’s dark memories of her own sister’s kidnapping ratchet up the urgency to find the girl—before it’s too late.
Racing through a maze of deceit and a buried past, the pair find themselves under attack from an unknown assailant. Dodging danger, they follow a tangled web of clues pointing to a forgotten secret that Thayne’s Alzheimer’s-stricken grandmother holds dear. But when their deadly investigation veers too close to home and brings a twisted killer to Riley’s and Thayne’s doorsteps, can they save those they love and stop the murderer before time runs out?
In Forgotton Secrets (which I highly recommend you read first), Thayne and Riley were in a casual relationship that had the potential to be so much more if they took a chance. Both were at a crossroads in their life - Thayne deciding to leave the SEALs to help his family, his father suffering from heart issues, his grandmother Alzheimer's, and Riley was burnt out from her job with the FBI due to her skills of being able to see inside the bad guy's mind, yet unable to solve the disappearance of her older sister over a decade before.
Thayne and Riley came through it at all, as a unit and stronger than ever, but they've reached another fork in the road and both must decide if this is where they must, and reluctantly so, take different paths, or if they can find a way to walk the same one together.
Thayne has taken over as sheriff from his dad of his hometown, and though he doesn't regret the decision he made to return and help his family, he can admit to himself that he misses being a SEAL and wonders what his former teammates are doing. When Riley is given the chance to return to her job as an FBI agent, he doesn't want to hold her back, but also worries her doing so will result in him losing her forever.
Riley needs the outlet her position provides, the chance to help those in danger as no one else can due to her uncanny ability to see what others can't, and to essentially let that go to waste in a town that doesn't require the skill seems wrong. But she loves Thayne and wants to be with him.
When Riley receives a call from a stranger, she has no idea how they got her number nor what they need from her. As Thayne ad Riley begin working together to solve a tragic case that has crossed their lives professionally, they begin to realize the answers they seek may be right in front of them, unfortunately the person who has them is slowly losing not only herself but any memories she might have.
Can Thayne and Riley find justice for the family who only wanted to be left alone to live free of danger? What about the member that was left behind to mourn what once was? As for Riley's sister, Madison, how is she coping with adjusting to life outside the walls that had kept her hostage for so long? Will she ever find happiness? Or does she believe what happened will prevent that? Will Thayne and Riley fight for the future they can have? Or will one of them have to compromise in order to get their HEA?
One-click now and follow along as two people whose lives are already merging personally, find them doing the same professionally with a case that seems almost unsolvable...unless they work together. I can't wait to see what happens next for this couple and what may be in store for Madison, Riley's older sister, and Hudson, Thayne's brother.
**I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.**
I've finished this one some time ago, but I wasn't in the right mood to write a review. I loved the book, but I felt a little detached from the story. I think in my eager to read it as soon as possible I made a miskate by reading it in the summer. It's a somber book, settled in the mountains..it was probably a more appropriate autumn read.. at least for me. Anyway the story was ok, the characters were good (at least they were because I also read book 1 in the Singing River serie, I can't say how I would have perceived them by reading that book only!) As I said it's the second installment in a serie and I would read them in order. You will lose most of the personal stories by reading the books in the wrong order and it was the part I loved more. I'll be reading book three if there is one, and if it comes out before I completely forget the other two, but I really hope book three will say something more about Cheyenne and the relationship with her husband..since I think it was my main motive for reading that book after the first one (which was also good but my TBR pile i soooo huge!!) Now some summer read please!!
Book one in this series was one of the first, if not the first, kindle book I ever won from Goodreads giveaways. That was three years ago. When I saw book two was listed as a Goodreads giveaway, of course I had to enter. I was shocked I was lucky to win it. Usually when I win a book from Goodreads I don't read it immediately. This one, I had to read it just a few days after winning it. That says something about what I think of this series. It was so nice to be back in Singing River, Wyoming with the Blackwood family after three years. Riley Lambert is the type of woman you want to read about. She can take care of herself and isn't always needing rescued by men. And Thayne, being an ex-Navy SEAL has the need to protect her but he also understands she can take care of herself and always trusts her to have his back in dangerous situations. I just love their dynamic. I love the whole Blackwood family, the author makes you care about them all. And do I see a future novel with Thayne's brother Hudson? I sure hope so!
FBI Special Agent Riley Lambert's return to Singing River Wyoming was not quite what she'd hoped for. She's had a lot on her mind since completing her assignment in Washington DC. She wanted to speak with her boyfriend Thayne Blackwood, the local sheriff, but Thayne is otherwise occupied with a case. The Jordans' home burned to the ground and the husband and wife are dead. It takes Riley but a few moments to pronounce it a crime scene: the Jordans were murdered. Thayne knows Riley is the best and he needs her talents as a behaviour analyst to solve this case. They still make a great team, but will their romance stand the test of time?
FORGOTTEN LEGACY is the second installment in the Singing River series, and while it is a continuation of book one, it stands entirely on its own. There is a lot going on: the arson investigation; Thayne's grandmother who is battling Alzheimer's; and Thayne's and Riley's romance which is not going smoothly. Their relationship issues are very realistic, and I couldn't see how they could make it work. It's rare to see the conflict for a couple coming from their career choices, and I really liked that. Riley is truly obsessed with her work, and this is one of those rare instances where I wouldn't have minded a little more romance, but it was great watching them at work.
I must admit I found it hard to rate this book, because I found it quite depressing. It seems nothing is going right for anyone, apart from Madison, Riley's sister. There's Thayne's grandmother's Alzheimer's; another character has health issues - actually more than one. For the best part of the book, it seemed like Thayne and Riley would break up, even though they do love each other. I certainly was not expecting a barrel of laughs, but it was really bleak.
Ms. Perini's writing is excellent, as always, but while all the characters are fully fleshed out, it was disconcerting that most are barely described. There is no physical description of Thayne or Riley, none whatsoever. They must have been described in the previous book, but I didn't remember; it felt like watching a black and white movie on a TV with bad reception but with exceptional sound quality. The story is quite complex, with many layers, but I'm still not sure what to make of the scenario with the killer. Robin Perini is experiencing first-hand the devastation of Alzheimer's, as her mother suffers from the disease, and this book shows how heartbreaking it is for everyone concerned. Make sure to read the Afterword and the Acknowledgements.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I enjoyed the first book in this series, Forgotten Secrets, and this book was better. The characters are believable. I appreciate the compassionate look at dementia, specifically Alzheimers. Good suspense and plot line. I will read more from this author.
I only “read” using Audible, and I’m pretty laid-back when it comes to the narrator. I don’t always love them, but I’m just not that picky. HOWEVER… in this case… the NARRATOR (Lauren Ezzo) ruined the entire listening experience for me!
The recording is punctuated by her over-zealous breathing, and she somehow manages to make an FBI PROFILER sound like an angry 13-year old girl who is begging her mother take her to the mall!
I tried changing the listening speed but it didn’t help! Eventually, I just cranked it up to 2x so I could END the torture!
The best description I can come up with for her narrative delivery is “frantic whining” (and I just don’t think FBI profilers spend a lot of time whining)
Oh…and the story wasn’t great either. Among other things…the ending was a little too “neat and tidy” for me”! To be fair…it might be better in paperback, but I will think twice before I read this author again.
Well written suspense story. I didn't like how much information/research came from a retired teacher/computer hacker. I'm getting tired of stories that have too much reliance in the ever present hacker. I liked the premise of the suspense.
Forgotten Legacy is Book 2 of the Singing River Legacy series by Robin Perini. Even though I'm sure a reader could follow along just fine without having read Book 1, I do recommend at least picking it up as it shares a lot of insight into the back story playing out this time around.
This is the only 2nd book I have read by this author and I must say I am impressed. This story is an edge of your seat, action-packed thriller with a dash of romance. Overall, it was a great story and I look forward to reading more of Thayne, Riley and the Blackwood family.
I really enjoyed the book and would give it 3.5 stars. The details from Forgotten Secrets were a little foggy, since it's been three years since I read it. The book pretty much picks up where the last one left off. Riley is so frustrating throughout the whole book. I wanted to shake her and make her see what is in front of her, instead of running away. Riley finally has her sister back in her life and a loving fiance, but still isn't happy. I didn't love Riley as much as I did in the first book. It's suppose to be a romance, but I didn't always feel the love between Thayne and Riley. There were twists and turns. I loved the whole mystery behind the killer and couldn't wait to find out the connection he/she had to the Jordans. When the reason behind the murders was finally revealed, I just didn't buy it. The motive felt like a let down, I guess I expected something else. Of course there will be a third book, where Thayne and Riley will hunt down all the victims. Poor Helen is always put in danger, but she's one strong lady. I enjoyed the story, characters and writing style. At times I felt like the story got bogged down by Riley's back and forth about staying in Singing River or going back to DC. The problem was easily solved, but took so long for her to come to that conclusion. I wouldn't mind learning more about Cheyenne and Brett's relationship in the next book.
The Afterword was very touching. "We have learned to cherish and embrace the small moments of joy even as we navigate through tears. " Beautiful words on how Perini's family dealt with her mom's Alzheimer's. It must be devastating when your mom can no longer recognize you.
Definitely recommend the book and the previous one. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I just hope Riley sticks with Thayne and doesn't keep doubting herself. Christmas seems too far away for them to wait.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Montlake Romance through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Singing River Sheriff Thayne Blackwood and FBI Profiler Riley Lambert are called to a burning cabin deep off the beaten path. The scene of the fire is gruesome. A couple is found in their bed burned to ashes. What a tragic accident! Everyone knows you should never smoke in bed. Wait a minute. Riley doesn't see this as an accident. Her view of the scene indicates to her this is probably a murder scene. Thayne, Riley's fiance, has learned to trust Riley's expertise and instincts. Also the couple's daughter is missing. She is a homeschooled twelve-year-old so she should have been home. A search for Chloe is begun.
Forgotten Legacy by Robin Perini is the second book in her Singing River series. The first book, Forgotten Secrets was first published in July 2016. It was one of my "Top 5" books that year. I didn't know if the author was planning to write more books about Riley Lambert, Thayne Blackwood and the people of Singing River but I was really hoping she would. I am guessing Forgotten Legacy will end up being one of my "Top 5" books of 2019.
This story has so much going for it - a keep-you-guessing storyline, intriguing plot twists, edge-of-your-seat suspense, jump-off-the-page realistic and very likeable characters, emotional depth and is very well-written. One of the main characters in both books in addition to Riley and Thayne is Thayne's grandmother. Gram suffers from Alzheimer's disease so she slips in and out of reality. This is significant because she has vital information Riley and Thayne need to keep everyone safe and solve the murder. Some of the scenes with Gram are very emotional. It is very difficult for the family and loved ones of Alzheimer sufferers to deal with the heartache of this disease. Robin Perini has faced this devastation with her mother's Alzheimer's diagnosis. She is donating 10% of the royalties she receives for her Singing River novels to the Alzheimer Association.
If you enjoy a psychological thriller with breath holding action, a few love stories thrown in and heartwarming, informative non-fiction facts woven throughout then this is a book to read. I enjoy almost everything about this author’s writing; the action, suspense, heartbreak, uncertainty of how different story lines are going to weave together, or not; this is one of those authors who’s novels keep you reading and not want to put it down while at the same time a sadness creeps over you realizing the ending is near. The one aspect of the two novels I read that Robin Perini wrote left me with the same feeling that something was missing. That feeling came over me as the villain in each book was finally exposed. I was left scratching my head. I felt like that person had just been an “extra” like in a movie. Just there to fill space and without much significance. But when exposed as the psycho alluded to through the book, I feel a gap. I don’t find that the character was really part of the story but just in a scene or two then suddenly becomes the reason for the plot. I can only assume that the author wants the reader to follow the story and to know the main characters; what they are thinking, feeling, strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes, how the lives of each is woven together, to understand who they are and how they interact with each other. I guess the story is about the things that are happening, how each character is involved. Except for the villain. Perhaps there role was meant to be just as an extra and not a main character.
Wow! An incredibly twisted tale of murder! Robin Perini has done it again! This sequel is delicious!
After an incredibly arduous case, FBI profiler Riley returns to Singing River and Sheriff Thayne an ex Navy Seal! Soon, the couple are hip deep in a baffling series of events and their relationship hangs in the balance! This is a masterful mystery with a complex plotline, excellent characters from a small Wyoming town and a psychpath leaving destruction in his wake! Having won the gold medal from the Romance Writers of America in 2011, Robin Perini once again demonstrates her brilliance in the romantic suspense genre! Central to this book is an unflinching view of Alzheimers and the conflicted hearbreak of dementia! The story pivots on the memories of a beautiful women and her family who suffer from the devestating effects of the disease! The author focuses on Dementia as a condition that impairs brain function and the consequences upon caregivers! This was timely, insightful and useful for all readers! Thank you Robin for sharing from the heart! "Forgotten" Legacy is heartbreaking, emotional, exciting and relentless! The action never slows as the story keeps the reader guessing to the very end! This a great book that is worth your time and energy! This novel will remain with the reader for awhile! You should definitely read this story!
I devoured the first book in this series, and this one was just as good. It starts of just after the events of the first book, Riley is back on a case helping her old boss and is feeling torn. She loves her job, in a way she’s defined by it, after so many years searching for her sister, she’s unsure of who she is now, she longs to feel needed and her old boss needs her home. On the other hand, she loves Thayne and Singing River, but fears there’s no need for her to be there. It’s not the crime capital of the USA. You really feel for both Riley and Thayne as they try and workout if their relationship is real, or just steeped in danger and excitement. As a reader your invested in their love story and want them to be happy...
The case was really exciting and you were pulled along with our heroes as they try and solve a crime that seems to make no sense. But my favourite part of the book is Thaynes gram and her battle with Altzeimers, which keeps secrets looked away, secrets that can help them solve this case. It was heartbreaking watching her go from being lucid, to being scared, angry and lost, and the author portrayed the desperation of her family beautifully, you really hurt for them all
So glad I discovered this author...look forward to reading more books from her
Forgotten Legacy is the second book of the Singing River Legacy. I received the kindle version in a Goodreads giveaway, so despite never having read the first book in the series - I read it. I didn't find it hard to jump into the second book without knowing the history of the characters. I will say that at times it would have been helpful knowing some more details - but I still was able to keep up with the story line. I loved the characters in the town of Singing River! The relationship has developed further between FBI agent Riley Lambert and Singing River's sheriff Thayne Blackwood. In the midst of investigating an accidental house fire turned murder investigation, Riley battles her desire to be in the midst of the action of FBI headquarters vs. staying in the quiet town of Singing River with her love, Thayne. Together they must solve the untimely death of a couple and stumble on what appears to be a serial murderer. In the end - they will challenge themselves and their relationship and make a decision regarding their future. Will Riley stay or will she go... pick up this book to find out! This book kept me interested and flew by. Having hiked in the Wind River Range of Wyoming - I loved the description of this gorgeous part of the country.
Solid murder police procedural, weighted with treacly romance and personal melodrama
As a crime fiction fan, I enjoyed the complex murder storyline and the police procedural sections. I also re-read the murderer’s POV sections, which weren’t long enough and thus served to obfuscate identity. Had this book devoted more pages to the mystery and developed the villain, I’d have given this book an easy 4 stars. Even the MCs need fleshing out, because although I know their backgrounds, I can’t picture either Riley or Thayne due to lack of descriptions. It has been three years since book #1 of this series was published.
The romance and domestic aspects of this book were OTT. Plus, the oft melodramatic domestic problems are depressing, because they weren’t balanced by positive events and situations. There is a lot of repetition about Helen’s secrets/problems; Riley’s shivers, tingles, self-blame and indecision; Dan’s non-diagnoses, not to mention Olivia’s intransigence, and angsty interior monologues.
I usually enjoy the Audible version, but the narrator’s voice-acting was uneven and she needs more control over her volume. It was easier to read the Kindle version, so I could pay attention to the murders, the police procedural, and the serial killer.
The is the second book in the Singing River series.
In Singing River, Wyoming, a house fire claims the lives of 2 people. But was it an accident? FBI agent Riley Lambert. Riley doesn't think so, she received a call from the woman who died in the fire. She looks closer at the fire with the help of her fiance, Thayne Blackwood. The couple's daughter is the lone survivor of the fire. Could she have started it or could she hold the key piece to who is behind it? Thayne's grandmother holds a piece of the puzzle, but trying to dig the piece out is easier said than done. Thayne's grandmother has Alzheimer, so she doesn't remember what she knows. Can they put all the pieces together in time before someone else gets hurt?
This book is written as a stand alone, but I highly recommend reading the first book in the series. I am enjoying this series. The character are well written and as well as the story. I had to keep reading to find out what happens, with the mystery and with Riley and Thayne.
I received an advanced copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I did read the first book in this series Forgotten Secrets and I thought it was terrific. The first one I read with my book club this one I jumped on when I awesome the authors name.
Singing River a small community in rural Wyoming has had a multiple murder on the outskirts of town. This book involves the FBI profiler Riley Lambert and Sheriff Thayne Blackwood. These two were paired together as friends in the first book and now their friendship has blossomed into love.
Not to be distracted by them but to understand the talents of a profiler looking at the smallest detail and speaking to and listening to people when they give their encounters.
Thayne’s grandmother suffers from Alzheimer’s and her abilities and inabilities at to this mystery. As a member of a family that has had loved ones inflicted with this disease I can the author is spot on.
I think this book is so memorable as was Forgotten Secrets for me. I would highly recommend it.
As with the first book, I find myself perplex with the plot. I just wasn’t sure what direction it was going. I was in good company, as Thayne and Riley were also confused. While investigating three murders together, Thayne and Riley also found themself dealing with relationship problems. Thayne believes in true love, as he witnessed it with his parents, and sees it daily between his Pops and Gram. Riley loves Thayne, however doesn’t know if love is enough. The engaging supporting cast from Book 1 were present and took part in the storyline. Even though I surmised the killer, I still wasn’t sure of the motive. Even when it was revealed, I thought the premise was rather weak. I was disappointed that nothing was mentioned on the reactions to Cheyenne’s marriage to Brett Riverton. Another reason for only 3 Stars, is I don’t like when a child in put in dangerous situations, as Chloe was. Once again, the author displays such love and respect for Grams. Please make sure to read the Afterword at the end of the book.
While I was really happy to learn that Forgotten secrets had a sequel, this book kind of fell apart for my expectations. Riley and Thayne go back and forth with their relationship because Riley, as a former FBI behavioral analyst, doesn't feel needed in Singing River. Their romance is very weird in these books because it almost feels reversed. As in, what happened between them could have been in the second book (but was in the first one) and the points from the second book could have been in the first. However, I still really like their relationship and how they work together. As for the mystery, there's not a whole lot there. Robin Perini set up a beautiful one but there wasn't enough evidence for the majority of the book, so it was fairly dry in that department. Plus, there were a lot of side plots that also distracted from the main mystery. All in al, this book was more of a romance than a mystery, but overall, it was ok.
First I need to say this is not the normal type of book that I would rate 5 Stars. But after I read it and then read the Afterward by the author, I felt compelled to rate it so high. It is a secondary family saga story that spans several generations. The main story is about Riley and Thayne and their love for each other. Riley is a FBI agent with a special talent. Thayne is a former military man who is now sheriff in a real small Wyoming town. They definitely love each other but can Riley give up the thrill of working in a big city for the freaking FBI for Thaynes’ small town? But interwoven with this love story is a mystery-almost a thrilling mystery and I’m not fond of mysteries. For Forgotten Legacy I just might make an exception. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an advance copy for my honest review.
FORGOTTEN LEGACY by Robin Perini tells the story of Thayne, Riley and a murder mystery. Thayne and Riley are already an established couple - to be honest, I didn't always feel the connection between the two but the mystery of murder was certainly a bigger factor in this story. The threats and danger were intriguing and held my interest - trying to figure out who done it and where they would strike next kept me turning the pages. Thayne's family was amazing - they are the epitome of a good family - loving and supportive. My heart hurt for them as they tended to Helen, their grandmother. This is book two of the series and I have not had the opportunity to read book one. I wonder if I might have had a better connection to Riley and Thayne had I already read it. Overall, this is a good mystery with a touch of romance too. (received ARC for honest review)
Always an intriguing read when you get a Perini book. She has personal connections with Alzheimer's and wrote both books with Gram, an Alzheimer's patient, as the center of the mystery. She holds the family together, along with the town. But, she's lived her own life and has her own secrets that eventually are revealed. Riley, an FBI profiler and fiance to Sheriff Thayne, is convinced in her gut that a fire was not an accident but murder. The story is woven intricately with secrets, mystery, intrigue and compassion. This small town comes together when it's threatened by a large influx of strangers and a relationship realizes its true potential. Although there are two books it's not necessary to read the first to enjoy the second, it helps with backstory but the reader will not be confused. My copy was given through Netgalley.
FBI profiler, Riley Lambert, has just helped find a missing woman and her former boss has asked her to return full time to Quantico. Riley is at crossroads...does she return to what she loves or return to life in the small Wyoming town of Singing River with her fiancé, Sheriff Thayne Blackwood. Riley gets sidetracked when she follows Thayne to the smoldering remains of a house...with a dead couple. Riley disagrees that the fire was an accident and so begins the hunt fir a serial killer. This is another good book in the series. The plot is well written with the trials of dealing with a loved one going through early dementia interspersed in between the main story. Looking forward to seeing more from Singing River!
