This tale of murder and mistaken identity in a Manhattan apartment building is “a rollicking and delectable read” by a New York Times–bestselling author (People).   A teacher at a fancy Manhattan preschool, Nancy Stern spends her days cleaning spills, moderating bathroom breaks, and preventing that one kid in the back of the room from eating glue. With America’s precious future in her hands, Nancy rises to the occasion—but sometimes she yearns for something a little more glamorous.   Meanwhile, another woman by the name of Nancy Stern has moved into her apartment building—and as if the constant mail mix-ups aren’t annoying enough, every mistaken delivery and misdirected message reminds her that the other Nancy Stern is outshining her by far. That pile of exclusive party invitations spilling out of her mailbox? Not for her. The stunning coat that’s arrived straight from the cleaners? Not a chance. And that smooth voice on the other end of the line calling to ask Nancy out on a blind date?   Now that is something the penthouse-floor Nancy Stern doesn’t have to find out about . . .   But while her night out with the hunk stirs up a romance, The other Nancy gets murdered. And suddenly the real identity of not just the killer, but the intended victim, is a mystery in desperate need of solving . . .   “Very funny . . . When teacher Nancy accepts a blind date meant for the other Nancy, things rapidly spiral out of control. Murder and mayhem follow, all in Heller’s trademark witty and entertaining style.” —Library Journal   “A charmingly improbable love story.” —USA Today

“In other words, I am the Brunette Who Keeps Her Head.”
― Jane Heller, Name Dropping

This book is a laugh a minute. Go ahead and grab a copy.

This is a book I do not know how to categorize. Women's fiction, humor, Chick lit, I guess all of the above.

Wickedly good fun. Nancy is a Preschool teacher. She lives in NYC and is single, actually divorced. She is bored. Bored with her life, her job, her singleness.

Then another lady movies into her apartment building. And this lady has the SAME name as our Nancy. The same first name..and last.

They start receiving each other's mail. Which would be fine except Nancy One..the preschool teacher.. starts getting invites to Celebrity parties, benefits, her phone starts ringing with international Playboys asking her out. Turns out Nancy two is a beautiful Jet setter and reporter whose job it is to interview just about anyone who has fame to their name. Needless to say it starts making our teacher feel pretty sad about her own life.

When the phone rings one night and Teacher Nancy hears a really nice wholesome sounding guy on the other line asking for a date..she accepts..even though the guy thinks she is Nancy the reporter.

This is a delightful comedy/romance/mystery that kind of puts the F in fun and made me howl with laughter in some spots. Teacher Nancy is a great story teller and there is much more story to be told then I have covered in here. This is such a solid 5 star read, such a fun zippy little book I highly recommend anyone reading this pick up a copy now!

I just can't take this woman seriously. I like that she's easygoing and truly cares about her charges and that she's thoughtful about her life. And that she's not down on men or relationships after her marriage tanked (that's such an easy cliché). But her justifications for her original lie are weak beyond reason and her continuing the ruse after the initial dinner puts the lie to her good intentions and "just a lark" excuse. At this point, it's a pretty serious fraud and the fact that she likes Bill makes it worse, by far. It's like she got hit with the stupid-stick all of a sudden because she went from "mostly-reasonable woman doing her best to get by" to "comedy caricature the author is puppeting about for laughs".

And the really weak foreshadowing with little Fischer Levin's talk of his father's pirate treasure (which will obviously be part of the "mystery" that comes up later in the book) reinforces the impression that Heller is having a lark and not taking things very seriously. So I'm going to call it good and move on to something a little less awkward.

Although. It is interesting to visit that weird time in the past when phone numbers were associated with places instead of people. How weird is that?!?

This is another book that I discovered when I was cleaning out some book shelves. I have no idea where I got it or why I would have bought it. Having said that, I enjoyed it. It is a fine summer beach read.

It didn't turn out to be what I thought it was going to be. The cover states that a woman discovers that another woman with her same name has just moved into her apartment building in New York. The heroine is teacher of 4-year-olds at a preschool. The new woman is a journalist who interviews famous people and is invited to all sorts of fabulous events. From the start, they begin receiving each other's mail. The journalist has an unlisted phone number so people who are looking for her get the preschool teacher's phone number and she begins receiving phone calls from famous people and the other woman's lovers. I expected the book to be a funny account of the preschool teacher attending events with famous people, trying to pass herself off as the journalist.

The preschool teacher receives a phone call intended for the journalist from the manager of a high class jewelry store. They have a mutual friend who is trying to set up a blind date. The teacher agrees to meet him, pretending to be the journalist. They hit it off and she debates whether she should tell him the truth. Then, the journalist is murdered and the preschool teacher and her new boyfriend get pulled the investigation.

This book held my interest and I enjoyed it as a fun, light read.

Heller proves once again that she has breeziness down to an artful science. In her latest romantic suspense novel (after Sis Boom Bah), there's another powerful premise as well as a quirkily humorous heroine to hang it on. Nancy Stern, self described Brunette Who Keeps Her Head, is a teacher at Manhattan's Small Blessings, a tony preschool where ultrachic parents deposit their "trophy offspring."
Not completely satisfied with her lot in life, Nancy finds herself suffering from serious envy when a second Nancy Stern--who turns out to be a glamorous celebrity journalist- -moves into her building and Nancy Ibegins to find $10,000 AmEx bills and invitations to private movie screenings in her mailbox and phone messages from ardent male admirers. Nancy Iis intrigued, desperately wanting to learn if the grass is really greener; when she gets another misdirected phone call, this time from a
man asking for a blind date, she decides to be Cinderella for one night and impersonate NancyII. The blind date turns out to be the man of her dreams, but now that she's told him so many creative untruths, how can she ever go straight? To complicate matters, Nancy II is soon murdered and Nancy Ifinds herself caught up in a new existence that's even more exciting than she bargained for. Those without cause to take it personally will find it a treat to see Heller turn her culturally
observant wit on certain parenting trends. There's even a rollicking and appropriately themed "shoot-out" to go with the nursery school setting. With a dearth of fleshed out suspects for the murder, the mystery aspect of the book is somewhat shortchanged, but most readers will come for the fast pace and the fun, of which there's plenty.

>Book Review – Name Dropping
>I am an independent reviewer. This book is standalone romantic comedy and ends with an HEA. Nancy is a divorced pre-school teacher for a prestigious pre-school. She is very caring, especially with one boy with bully-like tendencies. She realizes the boy is just acting out after being ignored at home, so she tries to overwhelm him with kindness. He responds and gives her what she thinks is a ridiculous costume jewelry pin for a Christmas gift.
>Nancy is satisfied with her boring life, until a woman with her same name moves in to her building. This Nancy is a man-hopping socialite/celebrity interviewer. Men call and send her things all the time, only they come to the wrong Nancy. Pre-school Nancy is now unsatisfied with her boring life as compared to socialite Nancy. When a man, Bill, looking for socialite Nancy calls pre-school Nancy to ask her out, pre-school Nancy accepts.
>Of course they fall for each other and the lies cause quite a bit of angst. When a murder occurs, Bill, Nancy, the lies and the pin all cause a lot of misdirection in the story. Nancy realizes she deserves love. She loved her husband, but realized he did not feel much more for her than a roommate. I love how Bill treats her how a woman should be treated.
>This book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving this story 4 stars. The story is not super romantic or super hysterical, but it was fun enough and a quick read.

Hmm, I had such high hopes before starting this book. The book description is so grippingly superb, I actually salivated at the thought of beginning my journey through this book!

At my conclusion of this book, though it was really good, it didn’t meet up to my expectations. Every step of the way, I wasn’t a fan of the main male character. I believed he was too shady, too unreal, to be true. I get why she loved him though, “he was her Prince Charming”, but if I’m asked to choose who she had ended up with, it will not be Bill.

Overall, I gave it a 4 - star review, because although the ending wasn’t as I wanted, the entire book is filled with such wit and laughter. I especially loved her best friend Janice!

I enjoyed this story. It was fun to read, except for the occasional bad language and sex, (though it wasn't described explicitly); I would have like preschool teachers to have more traditional values. I am not sure why authors writing contemporary stories think they HAVE to include these things. I liked the main characters, even though they were good at pretending to be who they weren't. There were a few clever twists in the story, which made it a little different from other mistaken identity stories I've read. Even though it was a fun read, it also dealt with some serious issues, too.

This book had no plot and was too predictable. Sure the life crisis with the other Nancy Stern adds some early turmoil, but she quickly gets out of it when she died. It was like the turning point in her character happened in the first 100 pages. I kept expecting a surprise with Bill being bad or what he told us not being what happened, but it was and the take down of the bad guys happened too smoothly. It was an easy read but nothing to surprising and through provoking.

This was an okay book. It was interesting. Not exactly what I expected by reading the synopsis.

The story was intriguing and it moved along well. The romance was sweet, but started in deception...but worked out. I'm glad that wasn't dragged out too much. And the book was pretty clean, in the sense that there were no explicit sex scenes. It was fade to black kind of stuff, just some foreplay.

I didn't enjoy that everyone seemed to be getting a divorce, had gotten a divorce, was wanting a divorce. Yes, probably more real life, but it makes me sad. In the end though the author did have quite a good message about symmetry in marriage. Having an equal give and take in marriage. It was nice to hear when the rest of the relationships/marriages seemed to be falling apart.

So, not an outstanding book. Not the worst book. Just another one to pass the time.

Light Weight

Initially I liked the book, however the main character quickly moves from a person with interpersonal skills in one sense, particularly in her work as a Preschool teacher, to a total bimbo in all her other relationships. I had to find out how it ended, and it ended at 89%, seemingly as if it needed to end to give time for a snippet of another book by the author.

I couldn't put it down.

What a great story!!! The heroine, Nancy, isn't really very bright. She is in denial about things that are right in front of her. She comes up with ridiculous explanations for clear hints. Nevertheless, she's likeable and caring.

This book fell into my lap, not an author I typically read and had no recommendations from friends, but it was entertaining. I thought it would be a light hearted read but it had a little romance, a little mystery and kept you guessing till the end.

Finally, the lighthearted book I’ve been desperately searching for!

It’s not my usual genere (think romance + cozy mystery + New York)

There were times where I wasn’t sure what the book wanted to be but ultimately, it was a cute story.

The summary makes it sound so intriguing, but I feel like it fell flat. The main character has lovable qualities (and as a teacher myself, I love to read that perspective!), but her decision making was frustrating. I wanted more crime instead of her just thinking and talking to her friend.

Even though I read the jacket synopsis, I expected a sapphic love story of two people with the same name. But it had a few good one liners and a dry plot that kept dragging, could’ve been much shorter and exponentially more enjoyable. Bottom line: it wasn’t a total waste of time

When Nancy Stern journalist to the stars moves into the penthouse of Nancy Stern pre-school teacher extrodinaire's apartment building there is obviously a lot of confusion. Many mixed up packages, phone calls, deliveries and mail. However the biggest mix-up of all is when Nancy Stern journalist to the stars is found murdered in her apartment. It soon becomes clear that the intended victim, however, was the other Nancy Stern. Now the other Nancy must try to foil a group of jewel thieves connected to one of her pre-school students while trying to keep herself out of harms way.

Maybe I am just not a huge Jane Heller fanatic but I did not fall in love with this book as many other reviewers have. While Heller does have a breezy style of writing this book was a little too cutesy for my taste. In a mystery novel, even a chick-lit mystery there should be some semblance of credibility to it and this novel had little to none. However, on the bright side Heller's style makes her books quick and easy to read, good for a lazy day of lounging poolside.

Overall I enjoyed this book. It was a nice, sometimes funny, quick read.

The story is about two women named Nancy Stern living in the same New York City apartment building. One Nancy is a nursery school teacher, while the other (who I will call "Fancy Nancy" to avoid confusion) is a successful journalist, who interviews the rich and famous such as Harrison Ford. With the two Nancys living in the same building, there are several mix ups when it comes to letters, packages, and deliveries. Fancy Nancy has busy love life and has several men vying for her attention. Often, the other Nancy gets phone messages from these men meant for Fancy Nancy. One day, the other Nancy decided to take a blind date intended for Fancy Nancy and she really hits it off with this gentleman, Bill.

This is a great book full of mystery, mistaken identity, mix-ups, and even murder.

The only reason I didn't rate this as a 5 star is because I thought the love story was rushed, making it slightly annoying.

Love, love, loved it! This was my first Jane Heller novel and it was so good that I can say I will unquestionably be in quest of more of her books.

Pre-school teacher and newly divorced Nancy Stern feels as though her life can't get anymore exciting than what it already is. That is until she begins receiving mail for another woman who moves into her apartment building. Another woman with the same name.

Now, we're talking invitations to fancy parties, flowers, and phone calls from a horde of men. Dutifully, she delivers all messages and gifts she's obtained to the right Nancy Stern. The blonde, leggy, celebrity-interviewing Nancy Stern.

A person can take but so much of this type of abuse, so when a mystery man calls one night determined to ask the "other Nancy" out on a blind date, "pre-school Nancy" can't help but to play the part. From this point on, the story becomes a passionate love affair that connects mistaken identities to murder.

Pre-school teacher Nancy Stern is in a rut, spending her days with four-year-olds and her Saturday nights with a good book. Then another woman with the same name moves into her Manhattan apartment building...a Nancy Stern who lives in the penthouse...A Nancy Stern who's blond and leggy and has a stable of boyfriends...a Nancy Stern who interviews celebrities for glossy magazines. Now Nursery School Nancy is deluged with mail and phone calls and deliveries of flowers - all meant for the Glamorous Nancy. It's all too much to bear - until a man calls one night, intending to ask the other Nancy on a blind date. What follows is a raucous and romantic tale involving mix-ups, mistaken identity, and murder..
