An alpha who has to think outside of the box to secure his pack’s survival. With every shifter species in jeopardy Jerome has a plan that he knows will work. Convincing the rest of the supernatural world is the next step. Sterling has always supported Jerome's vision and travels with him to help him convince the council, but also to make sure he comes out of that meeting alive. What they come home to will change Jerome's world for good.
Mother to two teenage boys, 2 four legged babies, and wife to a loving army veteran who doesn't mind the extra voices in her head. Miranda grew up on a dairy farm in Illinois, but calls Portland, TN home now. She is an avid reader, coffee addict, wine lover, crafter, and beginning quilter. Though her true passion is in creating her own worlds, characters, and stories for her readers.
I usually love shifter books but this one, not so much. Jerome is in a series and technically you can read as a standalone but at times it gets confusing. The book is a very quick read which does not help the storyline. Especially the romantic storyline. Really there is no romance. Jerome meets Suzanne and her cub and feels an attraction and desire to "keep" and "protect" but his one true mate is dead so he will never feel that again. No sex. One kiss. A fight for Were unity. No real character development. No real plot development. Well yeah a little bit more development on the unity development. At the end the author makes a note if you don't like cliffhangers don't read the Epilogue. I read the Epilogue; No cliffhangers. The End.

I received this book from the author for an honest review.
GAH!! What a great series starter for people who have not fallen in love with the series OR what a great addition to the series for people like ME who are addicted to the world!!
I loved loved loved getting a super quick glimpse into the beginning of the inter-mixed species Miranda created. We are seeing Jerome and Suzanne meeting and then fall in love. We see our yummy Mack as a sweet, innocent Cub before his story happens.
This is a very quick read for people, but you can see how Jerome and Sterling along with super-secret Leo formed the Black Mountain Pack. We get to see all our favorite shifters before their books and mates appear.
I would have loved for this book to be a bit long because it is a very quick read but its still a great reminder of who we love and why we fell in love with them.
The action needs to be show not tell. Start with the woman and child in their last pack. The council meeting should have been a tell or if you are going to show it have the Resistance attack the meeting. Create a real threat with real stakes, kill people. Show her getting weaker and weaker over time until finally she collapses. Then show the cub frantic and trying to fix his mother. He has a personality that you could have explored. The world literally took two sentences to set up, and all the men listed don't need to be introduced. Pick one, the next one in the series and explore him a little. Two types of story character driven and plot driven. The plot should never ever be the focus in this story because it's frankly stupid and been done to death. And Jerome isn't the character with the interesting story to tell. Jerome is the climax and resolution. Climax needs to be Jerome finding Suzanne and the resolution should be a panther falling in love with a wolf.
Jerome is alpha of a mixed pack of shifters. He is trying to share his ideas with the council to help protect the packs and keep them alive. He has not had much success but is going to a conference to put his ideas out again. This time there is an endorsement of his ideas. Unfortunately Jerome has to leave the conference to get home because of an emergency.
I enjoyed this book. The world building is good and is set down for the series. The story was quick and seemed rushed at times. I would have liked to see a little more fleshing out of the story in middle and end.
The characters were great. I liked Jerome and the bit of his history that we got. I liked Mack and his mom, Suzanne. I would like to know more of their story. Leo was cool--a curmudgeon but with a heart of gold. The others were interesting and I would like to know more about as well as the vampires and witches.
I hope to be able to find copies of the rest of the series.
If you follow the Black Mountain Pack then you need to read this….if you don’t follow then you need this! The Black Mountain Pack series is an amazing read and we see how Jerome takes care of his inter-species pack but his book really shows the behind the scenes on how the pack was formed and the obstacles he was faced with. This is a super fast read but gives you the glimpse that you need into Jerome’s past and how he meets Suzanne and Mack….and how they stole Jerome’s heart. Again, because it is a fast read, we get a glimpse into our favorite fox Sterling, the super secret Leo, as well as some of our other favorites and the witch covens. It’s the perfect novella to accompany the Black Mountain Pack series! Can’t wait for more!
First off I would like to thank the author for stating in the last chapter that the book is a cliffhanger. Personally I am not a fan of them but I am glad, so glad the author warned of what was coming ahead. I chose not to read the epilogue and have left this book as a stand-alone in my mind. If I want to continue on with the series I can do so, but at this time I am happy where I am.
In saying that, I found the book very entertaining and I enjoyed the storyline. If you are a lover of a continued series I would suggest that you may want to read this.
I gave this five stars because....wow! Ok now my questions were answered about Mack and Jerome. Oh and Sterling too! How did they come to be in this pack and how this Alpha found a mate if his had already been killed? A second first chance at love! This is a must read! Loved it!
I've previously read the three current novels in this standalone series and was super excited to read about Jerome and Suzanne. It was a good story, but I do wish it had been longer. Getting a little more face time with the couple in addition to the conflicts leading to Jerome's choices would have been nice. Overall a really easy and quick read.
The love story of Suzanne and Jerome. After losing his mate and most of his pack, Jerome is rebuilt his pack with other species. He thought he would be along forever but he met Suzanne and her son. This is a stand along if you do not read this he last chapter. Great story.
To live safely among the humans, the shifter world must learn to work together
First time reading this author. For a short story there was plenty of action and excellent scenarios. Good shifters, vamps and witches as well as bad ones. We even have new found love between different races. An excellent prequel to what I believe will be an excellent aeries
The fact that Jerome is an Alpha to multiple shifter Pack, and wants to show that this is a new way to live, makes this story a great read. It's the start of the Black Mountain Pack. From a Fan... Pam James.
