Thanks to Aunt Peg and her enthusiastic dog show pals, Melanie’s aptly named Bite Club reading group has book lovers all over town burying their noses in thrilling murder mysteries. But another pet project surfaces when Melanie reluctantly agrees to train a Bulldog puppy for elusive member Evan Major. Between the unusual bruise on his face and a bizarre run-in with an unknown dog show attendee, introverted Evan’s penchant for trouble sends him to an early grave—while landing Melanie in the hot seat for homicide . . .
To prove her innocence, Melanie digs into the victim’s shady past and uncovers a juicy scandal that cost Evan his marriage and, possibly, his life. Melanie realizes that booking the real culprit will require gathering her suspects together at the next Bite Club meeting. What she doesn't know is Aunt Peg has been hiding some explosive secrets of her own—secrets that, once unleashed, could pit Melanie against an unpredictable killer bent on bringing this story to an abrupt end . . .
“If you like dogs, you’ll love Laurien Berenson’s Melanie Travis mysteries!” — Joanne Fluke, New York Times bestselling author
Laurien Berenson is the award-winning author of the long running Melanie Travis canine mystery series and the new Senior Sleuths series starring Peg Turnbull and Rose Donovan as a pair of seventyish sisters-in-law who are learning to put aside old grudges as they work together to solve mysteries. DIE ANOTHER DANE (#31 in the Melanie Travis series) is out now.
Laurien's work has appeared numerous magazines and the New York Times. She and her husband live on a farm in Kentucky, surrounded by horses and dogs.
I’m a long-time fan of the Melanie Travis mysteries and book #22 is just as awesome a read as the earlier books in this series. I love the cute bulldog puppy on the cover just as I love all the regular poodle characters in the Travis family and those that belong to Aunt Peg.
As this story begins, Melanie has started a book club—Bite Me—which her Aunt Peg basically takes charge of and doubles the number of people attending. An eclectic group gathers together at Aunt Peg’s to eat, gossip, and talk a bit about books. Mel meets Evan Majors, a recent divorcée who asks her to help train his new pup, Bully. Mel is happy to oblige, however, when she finds Bully outside alone, Melanie’s worst fears come true when Evan’s lifeless body is discovered inside his house.
The author showcases a clever mystery which kept my mind searching for clues to the correct villain. By the time I chose a suspect, the story is wrapped up and the author explains all the means, motive, and opportunity in a spectacular ending! I highly recommend BITE ME and the previous books in this series to all dog lovers and cozy mystery fans.
I received an arc via the author, and have provided an honest and unbiased review. Thank you.
Bite Club is the twenty-third novel in A Melanie Travis Mystery series. While the book can be read as a standalone, you will be missing out on a great series. The author provides everything a reader needs to know about Melanie, her family, her dogs, and friends. Bite Club is well-written and progresses at a steady trot. Melanie Travis is married to Sam and has two kids: Davey and Kevin. Davey is thirteen and is acting as a handler for Aunt Peg’s latest poodle puppy, Coral. Kevin is an inquisitive and active four year old boy. Aunt Peg (she reminds me of one of my aunts) is an intimidating woman and dog show judge who frequently ropes Melanie into her schemes. When Evan Major is killed and Melanie is at the top of the suspect list, she sets out to learn more about the quiet man. The mystery was well-plotted with unexpected disclosures and a mouth dropping reveal. As an avid cozy mystery reader, I enjoy a complex whodunit. I enjoy the family interactions and how Melanie talks to Faith, her oldest poodle (and looks for a response). I like that it is not a picture perfect family. Melanie’s household is always lively with four people and six dogs. Dinner may not be served on time, groceries run low and there are messes from kids and animals, but the house is filled with love. This is what adds to the appeal of this charming series. The dog show information is told in a way for a layman to understand (which I appreciate). I was unaware of the intricacies of dog shows and all that goes into maintaining a Standard Poodles fur for competition. There is humor sprinkled throughout the story along with the antics of the adorable canines, the kids and Aunt Peg. Bite Club is an engaging cozy mystery with a friendly sleuth, energetic book discussions, loving husband, sweet kids, endearing dogs, one dead guy with an unexpected past, and bossy Aunt Peg.
I love this series. When a new book in this series comes out, I will drop everything and start reading it.
This one was another winner. Melanie starts a book club with a few friends. Aunt Peg finds out and takes over (as usual). One of the members winds up getting murdered, and it turns out he or she has a shady past. There’s also a great side plot with Crawford and Terry.
As I always say when I review these books, you don’t have to be a dog owner to enjoy them. They are just great, fun, well written mysteries.
Melanie Travis had the grand idea of starting a book club with a group of his friends who love mysteries and the Bite Club is born. Then her Aunt Peg butts in and invites a bunch of “friends of her own”. A band of dog show buffs that would never say NO to a judge that could hold their dog’s fates in her hands. One of the other members brings a guest but his true reason for attending is revealed as soon as the meeting ends. Evan Major is new in town and has just purchased a bulldog puppy and he asks Melanie to help train the dog. Melanie agrees and soon takes the man under her wing even inviting him to a weekend dog show. She sees a different side of him when he gets into an argument with another man at the dog show.
When Melanie arrives for her second training session with Major and his dog Bully, she finds the pup roaming around outside by himself. After pounding on the man’s door and getting no answer she takes Bully home to her already dog-filled house. When the police come knocking on her door she knows the news won’t be good. Evan Major is dead and one of his neighbors saw Melanie at the house the day before. Yup, she is on the suspect list!
She decides to take a “bite outta crime” to find the killer herself and she uncovers scandal and secrets galore.
___
The Travis family including all the canines is my favorite cozy family. With everything, she has going on in her life her starting a book club was really no surprise and neither was Aunt Peg’s takeover. Peg tries Melanie’s patience almost every day of the week. In this story, she also gets on Davey’s nerves as well. Peg is a formidable woman and everyone knows to just back off and let her do her thing. I find the way Laurien Berenson portrays her characters is amazing. True to life and so much fun to follow. She takes time to catch readers up on life with the Travis family before introducing any new characters in a believable way before she dives into the murder mystery part of the story.
This time the body wasn’t found until about 1/3 of the way through the book and that was perfect. We didn’t know everything about Evan Major but we knew enough to care about who killed him because we knew Melanie is no killer. What the author lays out is a pretty complex mystery with several other suspects. I loved the way the book club was utilized with the classic cozy tradition of getting as many suspects in one room as possible in hopes of getting them to out themselves or others they are close too. Wonderful plotting made this story a delight to read.
In addition to getting into the main mystery, Melanie is asked to solve another one for a close friend. Afraid to overstep, she finds herself shy about fulfilling the request. When push comes to shove she makes a very interesting observation that shines the problem in a whole different light.
As always, dogs are featured lovingly from the first page to the last. We get behind the scenes at dog shows and a look at how much grooming goes into keeping Melanie’s adorable poodles in fine form. A special treat is her first poodle, Faith. The dog is empathetic and a perfect pal to have when you are feeling down. She is also an excellent sounding board for Melanie because they have a special understanding. Melanie talks to Faith the same way I do with my dogs. Faith understands Melanie better than Oreo and Nera do me but we get our points across. 🙂
That special bulldog on the cover stole my heart. Ms. Berenson uses Evan’s experiences to help people who don’t have or haven’t had dogs understand what commitment is made whether you have a purebred show dog or a rescued mutt you are a vital part of their lives and need to plan accordingly.
Each slice of life we get to explore with Melanie Travis is engaging, completely holds my attention and always makes me a bit sad when I reach the final page.
While this is a long-running series each book is written to stand on its own. Don’t be afraid to take a huge bite out of Bite Club. I can’t promise you won’t want to devour every other Melanie Travis Canine Mystery.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this book!
Even though this is the 22nd book in the series (and I have only read one other) I soon found myself fully immersed in the plot and the characters. It was a good mystery, with plenty of suspects and motives all round. Of course the bossy Aunt Peg was my favorite character; the second such bossy Aunt that I've read in two days and enjoyed! She really comes through on the detecting front, leaving Melanie a little in her dust. Of course the poodles are a great interest grabber too; I especially loved Faith.
This was a fun, light hearted cozy with a continuing dog theme. You don't have to read the others to enjoy this one, but if they're of the same quality you will probably want to! Four stars :)
I wasn’t sure what was going to happen when I came into a series at book 22. I was surprised and delighted by this book! It was a solid mystery, but what I liked even more was how Ms. Berenson showed relationships. In Melanie’s family the relationships are not perfect. Her kids are not perfect, her aunt is definitely not perfect, and she’s not perfect. The author shows what real relationships of all types are. Messy, but filled with love ( hopefully). This was a great read, interesting characters, awesome dog show scenes and a great mystery!
I was provided an advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.

Review:
The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words. The descriptive writing of the author had me feeling like I was in Connecticut, watching all of the action taking place and listening in on conversations. And the descriptions from the dog shows had me feeling like I was right there, watching the behind-the-scenes action. I watch dog show on television whenever they are on, and it was fun to get some insight into their world.
The characters are well rounded and well rounded. Melanie is a funny, caring hardworking mom who has a lot going on in her life. But somehow she is able to juggle everything. I enjoyed getting to spend time with Melanie and her family and friends. I enjoy when the protagonist has a family, to me it makes them see more realistic. Aunt Peg is a real pill, but in her own way, she loves Melanie and her family.
The mystery was well plotted and moved along at a nice pace. There were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider and it was not easily solved. And there was another mystery to solve involving her friend Terry, which I enjoyed reading about.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. If you enjoy animals in your cozy and you like dog shows, this is definitely for you.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.
Bite Club by Laurien Berenson is the 23rd book in the Melanie Travis mystery series, and another great addition. Reading this book made me feel like I was visiting good friends, and catching up on their latest adventure. Melanie started a book club called Bite Club and when her Aunt Peg the group, she takes over and doubles the a club members. When one of the members is found murdered in his home, the sleuthing begins. I love this series, and this book! I love the well developed characters and plot of this story. Melanie is very likable, with a fun sense of humor and funny how she deals with her Aunt Peg. This book kept my interest, and was fast paced and all round fun . I strongly recommend this book and this whole series, for people who love cozy mystery book, dogs, and show dogs.
I reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington Publishing. Thank you.
This is the 23rd book in this beloved series. I have read the entire series and each book is delightful. Visiting Mealnie Travis and her family to me is like revisiting with old friends. I look forward to each new release and hope the series will continue . I highly recommend this series. Each book can be read as a stand alone. Melanie is a Mother, a part time teacher, a wife and shows standard poodles. Part of the charm of this series is the show poodles that live with Melanie and her family. Her oldest poodle is Faith and is her constant companion and very endearing for all of us that love dogs. She has a quite bossy Aunt Peg who is featured in each book and does not suffer fools ! Aunt Peg is a long time well respected poodle breeder. Melanie and Peg are quite adept as solving murders together. Melanie has a nice second husband in Sam who features in the books also with poodles of his own and a supportive husband.
In this next in series Melanie has started a book club called "Bite Club". Of course Aunt Peg finds out and demands to take over . In doing so the attendees increase much to the chagrin of Melanie. When a murder occurs and Melanie is the prime suspect she must solve the murder to save her reputation and find the murderer. As this progresses I like the twist and turns that were pleasing to conclusion. The suspects abound yet Melanie with Peg's help is able to discover clues and find the right suspect. They are a great crime solving pair . Aunt Peg was a dog show judge for years and knows everyone on the circuit and is great at discovering clues.
This was a delight to read and a fun mystery. I like everything about this series as it has great long time charcters , fun dogs and always a good sleuth. I look forward to the next in series. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the ARC. My opinion is my own. I cross posted on Good reads, Amazon and Net Galley.
Some years ago when I was searching through my library stacks for something to read, I found this series featuring Melanie Travis and standard poodles. I like it so much I read it often. I even purchase the one book that was missing so they would have a complete set. Since I can no longer read a print book, I have been able to follow Melanie and her dogs. This now the 22nd installment of the set of this superb information about dogs and dog shows. Melanie Travis has formed Reading Club of her friends it is named the Bite Club. One of its members is Evan Major. He purchased a Bulldog puppy name and asked Melanie to help him train it and Melanie agrees. When Aunt Bee learns about the reading club she adds an equal number of dog show exhibitors.
Evan Major.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND SERIES.
Disclosure: Thanks to Kensington Books for a copy through NetGalley. The opinions expressed are my own.
"Bite Club" by Laurien Berenson is the 22nd novel in "A Melanie Travis Mystery" series. This was the first book I have read in the series and it can be read as a standalone, I do recommend you read them in order. The author does provide everything you need to know about Melanie, her family, her dogs, and friends.

Protagonist Melanie, is a strong, educated woman, and the side characters are realistic, like her bossy Aunt Peg and the poodles are a great. I really enjoyed this book, I found myself engrossed in the story and reading it in one sitting. It was entertaining, full of twists and turns as well as a few surprises. I even learnt something about Dog Shows.
I can't wait to read the others in the series, highly recommend to all dog lovers and cozy enthusiasts.
I requested and received an Advance Readers Copy from Kensington Books and Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my OWN.
Melanie starts a book club with the genre of, wait for it, murder mysteries! This seems like a safe way to try and solve the mystery of who done it and why, right? Sounds harmless, but when Aunt Peg takes control of Bite Club (love the name) and more than doubles the size of the membership, it becomes anything but harmless, especially when one of the members is murdered. Melanie finds herself with a full plate with a murder to solve, Helping her good friend Terry with a personal problem and dealing with being a mother to a small boy who wants to do everything his big brother does. Oh yeah and then she has to play referee when Aunt Peg and Melanie's older son Davey butt heads. Again, I thought I had this one solved only to find out I was wrong....again! Close, but still wrong. After all, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades! I can only hope Ms. Berensen intends to keep these characters alive in another book for all of the fans of this wonderful series. Who knows, maybe someday I'll even figure out the murderer's identity before Melanie does. Okay, Maybe not but I'll sure enjoy trying as I always do.
*I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book that I won. Had I not won the book I would have purchased it on my own. I am not required to leave a review. The comments and opinions expressed are strictly my own.
Bite Club is the twenty-third (according to the author’s website) book in Laurien Berenson’s Melanie Travis Mystery series. Each book in this series can easily be read as a standalone because the author provides great background information, making the character’s relationships easy to understand. The storyline is well plotted and flows at a steady pace. This is a clean, fun, and quick read. I recommend this series to readers who love well-crafted cozy mysteries.
Melanie Travis lives in Stamford, Connecticut with her husband, Sam, and two sons, thirteen-year-old Davey and four-year-old Kevin, five Standard Poodles, and a mutt they found on the side of the road. Melanie is a special needs tutor at Howard Academy, Sam is a software developer who works from home, and dog shows are a way of life for Melanie and her family. Melanie started a small book club, named Bite Club because the group consists of dog lovers, and they decided to read mystery novels with a “bite.” When Aunt Peg found out about the book club, she took it over and doubled the number of participants. Alice Brickman, Melanie’s friend and former neighbor, brought her new neighbor, Evan Major, to the first book club meeting, and at the end of the third meeting, he asked Melanie to help train Bully, his new Bulldog puppy. Their first session went well, but when she arrived for their second session, she found Bully loose near the street. When Evan didn’t answer the door, she looked in his back yard and peeked into his windows, but didn’t find him, so she took Bully to her home. One of Evan’s neighbors discovers his body in his kitchen and points her finger at Melanie because she saw her snooping around his house, and drive away with Bully in her car the day before. In the course of trying to figure out who killed Evan, Melanie learns some surprising things about him and some of their friends. Aunt Peg tells Melanie she has a plan to ferret out the killer, but once it’s set into motion, Melanie fears it’s going to backfire. Meanwhile, Melanie helps Terry Denunzio, her best friend, figure out what’s going on with his life partner, Crawford Langley, and a man who’s visiting him.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
I loved every page of the Bite Club by Laurien Berenson. This is an ongoing series featuring Melanie Travis who is a full time mom, teacher and also deeply involved in the world of dog judging. She has raised with the help of her meddlesome and formidable Aunt Peg. prize winning standard poodles. I love the dynamics of her family.. Melanie has a wonderful adoring husband Sam, a teenage son from a previous marriage Davey and her youngest son Kevin.along with Peg and her BFF Terry, it is an entertaining group The Bite Club is a mystery book club attended mainly by dog lovers. Aunt Peg worms her way in and basically takes over Melanie's new venture. At Peg's house during their meeting Melanie meets a shy and elusive man named Evan. He recently purchased a puppy and has no idea how to raise him. Melanie offers to help because she is simply a sucker for all types of dogs. Mysteries and murders seem to constantly land at her feet much to poor Sam's distress. Evan is murdered and Melanie appears to be a suspect. While juggling her responsibilities she tries to clear her name, be immersed in the world of dog showing while also helping Terry and his life partner navigate around a serious misunderstanding. I especially loved Terry and how close he is to our intrepid dog handler. I highly recommend this riveting and fun paced mystery and if you love dogs it's only a bonus. Happy reading! .
Melanie didn't kill Evan, a member of her new book club and the owner of the bulldog puppy she agreed to train. Neither did Aunt Peg so the two of them team up, as usual, to find out what really happened. This is a great series in so many ways but chiefly because of the characters which include, btw, Melanie's Poodles! Aunt Peg can be a real pain but she's got a huge heart. The Poodles- what can you say? Melanie- well Melanie has a great tone of voice and she loves her family, who are often a hoot. This may be the 22nd in the series but it still feels fresh. And, I think it could be read as a standalone. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Berenson's fans are in for a good time and everyone for a good read.
The front cover features an adorable bulldog puppy, just like the one Melanie finds herself temporarily caring for along with her six standard poodles, the rescued dog Bub, her two sons ages 13 and 4, and her hunk of a husband. The Bite Club is a mystery book group which Melanie starts and which poodle owner dog show judge acerbic Aunt Peg soon takes over. When a club member is found murdered, Melanie begins her investigation sandwiched between dog shows and dog people including her family and friends. A solid mystery and an altogether delightful read full of humor and so very realistic human conflict.
In the continuing series of poodle-included mysteries, the author has again woven a tightly knitted, well-characterized story full of interesting characters and dog-show/breed info.
What does dog shows, poodles, a baby bull dog, and a book club have in common.... Bite Club,. the 23rd book in the Melanie Travis Mystery series. Melanie has chosen a group of her friends to join into a book club called Bite Club since it involves reading of books with a bite. However it is apparent her Aunt Peg has different ideas for the style of the club. When one member of the club is found dead and later discovered to have a shady past, it will be Melanie and her Aunt Peg to assist the police in finding the guilty party. Is that person a member of the Bite Club?
This is a nice cozy mystery. All the violence takes place discreetly off stage. Melanie does get cornered about being nosy. We get to learn about a new breed (a bulldog this time). The denouement was as hilarious as it was ridiculous. I highly recommend it.
Bite Club is a delightful addition to the Melanie Travis Mystery series. From the delightful puppy on the cover to the very last page you will be guessing whodunit. Melanie just can’t help but stick her nose in to figure it out and it looks like she’s got Aunt Peg hooked too. I really enjoyed this story and highly recommend the series.
I love the Melanie Travis books. When I have been reading dark stories, it’s so nice to settle in with Melanie, Davey , Sam, Aunt Peg, Faith and all the poodles and other friends. The dog shows are well written and add nicely to the story lines. The interactions with the dogs are just the perfect touch — often comical without being slapstick or cartoonish.
As with all the Melanie books, this one delivers. Enough suspense to keep me guessing and good writing so I had word pictures to watch everything play out. Thanks to Laurien Berenson for delivering another 5 star book!
2 stars I have long been a fan of this book series but BIte Club is just disappointing. The writing is disjointed and long-winded. It seems mean-spirited in places which I certainly do not remember from the other books in this series. All of the familiar characters are in this book but they just seem flat somehow, perhaps this series has gone on one book too many. Boo, I hate it when a beloved author disappoints. I cannot recommend this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. The views given are my own. #BiteClub #NetGalley
BITE CLUB, Laurien Berenson, 2019 Number 23 in this long-running series started in 1995 may be one of the best! Melanie has come up with the idea of starting a book club for readers of mysteries, called fittingly, the Bite Club. But her club is quickly taken over by Aunt Peg, who fills it with her dog show friends and insists on having the meetings at her house (although with the pastries she serves at each, I'm not so certain I would object to that). One of Melanie's friends drags a new neighbor, Evan, to the meeting, hoping he'll find some new friends or at least meet some people. Other things are happening as well: Crawford and Terry, a committed couple for many years, seem to have a third person insinuating himself between them; Davey, Melanie's 13-yr-old son, has recently finished showing his Standard Poodle Augie to his championship, and is now going to be showing Aunt Peg's Standard puppy, Coral; and Melanie has agreed to help Evan, a first-time dog owner, with his new bulldog puppy. Of course Aunt Peg has her fingers in all the pies, and as usual is completely thwarting Melanie's plans at every chance. I'm glad that Melanie puts Aunt Peg in her place when it comes to bullying her son Davey--although actually, Davey seems to be pretty good at that himself. Even with all the normal chaos that is Melanie's life (and Aunt Peg actually has the gall to ask her how she could possibly be stressed?) naturally she has to become involved in another murder. When a nosy neighbor finds a man dead in his home, she tells police she saw Melanie snooping around his house! Although she's not at the top of the police suspect list, all the book club members seem happy to put the blame on her. Even though she'd probably be asking questions anyway, at least she has the excuse of clearing her name.
I wish we'd had more after Crawford and Terry got their problems worked out. It didn't feel finished. Perhaps there will be more in later books. The ending was a hoot, and, as could be expected, Melanie does all the heavy lifting and Aunt Peg gets all the credit!
Evan Major is new in town. Thus, he is invited to a meeting of Melanie’s Bite Club Reading Group, a small number of Melanie’s close friends who formed a group to discuss books they all have read. Everyone likes that the group is small, so everyone can have a say and things can remain under control. Then, Aunt Peg becomes involved, and quickly doubles the number of members, much to everyone’s surprise. After the next meeting, everyone is shocked to find out that someone has murdered club member Evan Major. To complicate matters, Melanie, who had promised to help Evan learn how to care for the bull dog puppy he acquired, is fingered as a suspect, because she happened to be at his house during the time frame of the murder, at his request to further help him with his puppy. Thus, Melanie begins investigating just what happened to Evan and why he was murdered. The book follows several clues and red herrings, as Melanie pursues her goal. Naturally, the plot involves dog shows, dog handlers who show their dogs (who are also members of the Bite Club) and plenty of interaction by and with Melanie’s and Aunt Peg’s dogs, as Melanie ferrets out the true story of what happened and who is responsible. All this ends in a fascinating and interesting way, as usual in the books in these series.
I have read several of the books in this series, and I have thoroughly enjoyed each one. I like the way the author includes the dogs in the stories as more than props, so the reader can appreciate just how helpful dogs can be. I also enjoy the details the author provides about dog shows and how they run, as I had little idea how complex they were. The characters are, as usual, well done and colorful. Likewise, the plot will hold your interest as you follow along in this murder mystery. This is another good addition to the series, and I am sure all dog lovers and series lovers will find it definitely a good read. I received this from NetGalley to read and review.
Melanie Travis is a dog-lover and welcomes a few friends to participate in a book club she names the "Bite Club." Melanie's opinionated, bossy Aunt Peg invites herself and several others to join and soon takes over leadership of the club. Melanie is annoyed, but is too busy taking care of her family, helping a friend with relationship problems, and assisting an acquaintance from the book club to train his new puppy to do anything about it. When arriving at Evan’s home to give a dog-training lesson, she is dismayed to see the puppy running around his house all by himself with no sign of Evan. Melanie soon learns Evan has been murdered and a nosy neighbor offers Melanie up to the police as the prime suspect. Now it’s up to Melanie, with plenty of help from Aunt Peg, to find the real killer.
Even though this is the twenty-second book in this series, the author does a great job keeping things fresh for returning readers, but still accessible to those new to the series. The series has become a favorite of mine for intriguing mysteries, a likable amateur sleuth, and interesting insider information about the world of dog shows. This book features a seemingly shy, mild-mannered victim who is hiding a shady past. The more Melanie looks into Evan’s background, the more suspects she adds to her investigation. While questioning witnesses and possible suspects, Melanie also helps her friends Terry and Crawford with a possible snag in their relationship. Even though I figured out the truth before Melanie, I enjoyed this subplot. It doesn’t tie into the murder, but is related to the dog show world which is always a highlight of this series.
The side character who plays the biggest part in the book is Melanie’s Aunt Peg. Peg means well, but can be hard to take at times. She irritates me through much of the book, especially when she criticizes Melanie’s thirteen-year-old son who is showing one of Peg’s standard poodles. However, Aunt Peg makes up for it by the end when she uses information Melanie obtained about the murder to plan a gathering of all the suspects to nab the murderer. I like when Peg is cooperative because at those times, she and Melanie make a formidable team. The ending was dramatic and satisfying with questions answered by the end. Like Melanie and Peg’s champion poodles, “Bite Club” is a winner.
I received this book from NetGalley through the courtesy of Kensington Books. The book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.
When Melanie Travis hits on the idea of a mystery book club, it’s a success, right from the get-go, even though Aunt Peg kind of co-ops it, inviting new members.
Then one of the newest members, Evan Major, is murdered, and Melanie finds herself in the middle of the investigation…as a suspect. Someone spotted her at the victim’s house around the time of his death. Even though Melanie was there to help Evan train his new puppy, she finds herself explaining her actions and is soon on the hunt for who killed him.
Tracing Evan’s mysterious background, Melanie discovers some shocking secrets, some potential killers and plenty of suspects to check out at the next Bite Club meeting. Will she figure out the answers before the police arrest Melanie for murder or the killer tries to silence her for good?
It’s always a delight to have the chance to review a new Melanie Travis mystery. There is the core group of human and canine characters we’ve come to know and love, plus Ms. Berenson provides an intriguing mystery and enough suspects and clues to keep you reading and trying to figure out who the culprit is.
Bite Club is the perfect read for a nice afternoon on the deck or curled up on the couch!
Melanie decides to form a book club with a few of her best friends. Like a lot of book clubs, it was an excuse to get together and have fun. When bossy Aunt Peg finds out, she takes over as usual, changes the location to her house and invites several of her dog circuit acquaintances to join.
Evan, one of the new club members, asks Melanie to help him train his new bull dog puppy. After the initial lesson, when Melanie discovers that he does not even know the basics of dog ownership, they make a plan to get together again. Melanie goes to his house and finds Bully, the adorable puppy, running lose, so she takes him to her house to keep him safe until she can contact Evan. This proves impossible, as Evan has been stabbed to death.
As per tradition, Melanie and Aunt Peg are determined to discover who is the killer.
A book club, dogs, Melanie Travis and a mystery that keeps you guessing....what more could you ask for in a cozy mystery? Absolutely nothing! The latest Melanie Travis book is fantastic!
When Melanie hosts a book club named Bite Me (loved the name!) , murder soon follows. Evan Major, a troubled book club member asks Melanie to help train his adorable Bulldog puppy, Bully. Life imitates the southern mystery the club is reading when Evan is murdered. The hunt for the killer begins with Melanie and Aunt Peg in the fray.
I enjoyed the fast-paced nature of the mystery. Secrets and the best and worst of human nature was revealed. The characters were complex and the growth of the "regulars" such as Aunt Peg, Sam, Davey, Kevin, Crawford and Terry added to the enjoyment of the book. I love the fact that Melanie's personal and sleuthing lives are portrayed in the books - it makes for a realistic character you can relate to.
I loved the book and, as always, am looking forward to the next Melanie Travis mystery!
I received an ARC from the author for a fair and honest review of the book.
When a member of Melanie’s book club is murdered one of his neighbors claims Melanie was the last person to see him alive putting her on the police’s “person of interest” list. Of course, Melanie can’t sit still for that and, along with her Aunt Peg, takes matters into her own hands. This wasn’t the strongest addition to the Melanie Travis series but it was fun none the less. I always enjoy the characters in this series but the mystery in this one lacked a little punch.
