The Christian’s Journey Through Grief by Dr Carol Peters Tanksley is a comprehensive guide to journeying through grief. We will all make the journey through the dark valley at several times in our lives. No two journeys will be the same as we have to adjust to a new ‘normal.’
This is a very readable book and accessible for all. The author covers everything you could possibly need to know from the practical funeral arrangements to the finances to the big questions we all have, to the guilt and the physical pain of grief.
There is no ‘right’ way to grieve. Neither is there a ‘wrong’ way. We need to get through it as best we can.
We need to have at least one good friend who will bend their ear to us. We need to do the practical things such as eating and sleeping and keep just stepping towards the next thing. It really is a case of one step at a time.
Making a memory box is a lovely idea and may help us on our journey.
We need to take God with us on our grief journey. We need to be real with Him. He can take our anger, our pain, our disappointments and our questions. Sometimes we experience survivor’s guilt. We will need help to overcome this.
Every chapter ends with two questions designed to help us self-examine.
There is much scripture quoted within the book. As we journey into the unknown dark valley, it is good to know that we were not made for this. “We were created for eternity, not grief.” We are just passing through this life. The Christian knows where they are headed. For our relatives who have not yet said ‘yes’ to Jesus, we can be comforted by the fact that we do not know what transpires between God and His children as they breathe their final moments on earth. I was reminded of a saying by the Jamaican evangelist George Miller, “You can live without Jesus but for goodness sake, do not die without Jesus.”
Jesus has defeated the final enemy death. “Oh death where is thy sting?”
I will leave you with this powerful quote:
“Hope does not lessen the pain, and pain cannot dim the hope.”
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

So helpful to know my thoughts and feelings are normal and how to keep moving forward. It's helpful to know what to do with all this pain and how it affects you. I love that it's from a Christian perspective. I plan to share this with 2 people who are stuck in a place and pray it helps them keep moving forward. Christians feel grief too...I somehow thought I should stuff it down and be brave..like if I was a good enough Christian I shouldn't be so sad or hurt so bad.
