It’s a warm September afternoon in the sleepy town of Mechant Loup, a tornado has just ripped through town, and Detective Clint Wolf is searching for a missing school teacher. Not only are details sketchy and witnesses nonexistent, but a formidable Category 4 hurricane is heading straight for the Louisiana coast--and it’s threatening to erase every scintilla of evidence that might lead to the missing woman.
Even as the outer rain bands of the hurricane begin battering Mechant Loup, Clint makes a grisly discovery in the dead of night and suddenly realizes he’s dealing with a cold-blooded killer--but that revelation leaves him with more questions than answers.
When the pieces of the investigative puzzle finally start falling into place, Clint will have to answer a question of his own--did he finally meet a suspect he couldn't take down?

The Audible narrator did this book no favors with his monotone, choppy narration. The writer struggled with getting to the actual mystery and his portrayal of the romantic relationship between the married police officers was cringeworthy.
I just finished another good book in this series. I thought this was the second or third best book in the series. It had a fast pace to it and the story never bogged down. I like story because it was leaner , had less clutter and secondary characters were cut down and not in the way of the story. I thought the dialogue was good and maybe this was the best ending to any of the books in the series. I have to have to be honest I did not see the ending coming like it did but it was good and made sense. I say go ahead and give this book a big spin.
Merchant Loup is hit by a tornado in Bourg’s 8th offering in the Detective Clint Wolf thriller series. A woman is missing! Elizabeth Bankston was a teacher at the local high school. When Clint does find her body wedged in a tree, he assumes that the tornado killed her. But that would not explain the bullet hole in her forehead. Where was the crime scene? And a Cat 4 hurricane is heading straight for Louisiana which could erase any evidence. Enjoy this fast-moving thriller with plenty of suspects and a surprise ending.
A hurricane is bearing down on Mechant Loup and an evacuation is underway. Clint is battening down the hatches when he hears that a young woman, a teacher and librarian at the local school, has gone missing. He's just got time to check out the school - he finds her shoes on the playing field - but before he can search thoroughly a tornado hits the town. There's still time before the main storm arrives to check the school and the surrounding area and he finds the body, obviously taken by the tornado, up in a tree. Mystery solved, except for the fact that she had been shot. It's a case of less is more in "But Not Formidable" as the town is largely empty and there are few people to question. As well as the murder the book deals with the way in which the police and the community deal with the damage caused - Susan is particularly affected by a tragic act of god in which a young child died. There is, unusually, no clue as to the guilty party even as Clint closes in. It leads a particularly sudden and brutal finale, as well as opening the door for future events. 4 Stars.
Another solid entry in the series. A woman is found murdered just as a hurricane bears down on Mechant Loup. The two concurrent storylines in this book are the preparations and cleanup from the hurricane and the murder investigation.
It seems that it would be an impossible crime to solve. They can’t locate a crime scene, the hurricane would wash away any evidence, and they don’t have any real suspects.
When Clint finally zeroes in on a suspect he can’t shake him and he still doesn’t have any real evidence. A stroke of luck dumps important evidence in his lap and the climax makes you hold your breath. There are a few pieces that seem implausible and a few mistakes a detective of Clint’s experience wouldn’t make but overall a good mystery. And once again Achilles is a hero!
Most Clint Wolf stories are of the “man versus man” plot type, but this installment takes on many aspects of “man versus nature.” Not only is there a murder to solve, but the Mechant Loup Sheriff’s Department is battling a Category 5 hurricane along with tornadoes. This makes evidence-gathering difficult and evidence-preservation almost impossible.
The weather becomes a character in its own right, and it is a formidable enemy. The true villain, however? Chilling. This level of evil took me by surprise, and that doesn’t happen often. I only solved the mystery shortly before the protagonist did, which made me race through the pages.
The climax left Clint Wolf damaged. It left me unsettled. I highly recommend it.
Slower than I'm used to, with one of BJ Bourg's books, but none the less enjoyable. I never get tired of reading any, of his books! I try to space them out, so I don't read them all in a week. Lol! :). I've enjoyed reading a lot of other mystery books and authors. But, to be really honest, I enjoy the Clint Wolf series the most. Clint, Susan and all the other characters, from the police station, are like one big happy family and I enjoy catching up on all their lives. It's kind of like getting a yearly, family news letter, catching you up on everyone in the family!! I also appreciate all his books being in Kindle Unlimited. Thank you.
They were preparing for a hurricane, when a tornado sweeps In also and does even more damages. Finding a red shoe then the mate at the high school and the teacher is missing, her folks are frantic. She was determined to move the library books to higher ground, to minimize any damage. Clint is at the schook when the tornado comes,we’re was she. Outside he sees a piece of fabric, with the pounding rain and wind they would be no evidence. As well as almost no suspect, how can Clint even hope to solve. Spell binding plot of what a tornado does, and the damage to a town.
#8 did not disappoint me! I loved ever word of it! Clint an Susan are settling down to a picture perfect life! Then a Hurricane threatens their town and themselves! I am from Louisiana and lived through Katrina. It was the worst I’d ever been through. Reading about Hurricane Samson I started to relive our experience. The description is dead on for what everyone went through in Katrina. Then of course theirs a murder during the storm and Clint risks his life looking for clues. The ending I didn’t see coming but it was a whopper! On to #9!
This book is the last published in this excellent series of Mysteries starring Clint Wolf, Murder Detective. I have given a Four Star rating to the previous six Novels in the series. I'm giving this one 5 Stars, as it deserves. If you are a fan of Crime Novels, Murder Mysteries, or Cop stories, this bunch will grab your attention, and won't let go, until you reach the temporary last of this incredible series.
This book starts out with hurricane closing in on town and a mandatory evacuation. The small town’s residents were either gone, heading out or determined to stay. With the police all bunking at the police station, they were running out on calls. Clint finds a body … murdered and so, with tornadoes sprouting out of the sky, a hurricane bearing down, they are up to their chins in mess after mess.
I again found myself not able to put this book down in the Clint Wolf series. I love the characters and the escape that he offers every time. I loved The setting and the weather. He made you feel like you were there. The characters are so real and you feel the love he has for writing in every book. Way to go BJ! Can't wait for the next book in the series.
Mechant Loup is under a severe weather warning as a tornado has just ripped through town, to be followed by a Category 4 Hurricane. But Detective Clint Wolf is out searching for a missing school teacher. Unfortunately he discovers a body. Can he find the guilty person when it seems all evidence has been destroyed by the weather conditions. An enjoyable crime story
A hurricane is headed for their town. Clint and Susan encourage people to evacuate. Before the hurricane hits a tornado crosses the town. While checking for damage a woman's shoe is found on the football field, but no woman. A fast moving mystery but a completely surprising end!
I have read several Clint Wolf stories. But this storyline was so relatable to today. This story had everything disaster, suspend, and let's not forget the action that was sprinkle throughout the story. I gave two thumbs up for story ending.
As with 5-6 previous books of this author that I have read so far, this was also interesting, exciting and fast-paced thriller amidst a major hurricane hitting Clint Wolfe’s (central character) town in Louisiana. The ending (perpetrator of the crime) was totally unexpected. Waiting to read the next book.
Clint Susan and the gang are checking the town's preparations for the incoming hurricane when they find a women's shoe on the field. A tornado ripped through the area, and it took some time before the body was found. Many different suspects in hazardous conditions make great reading.
Happy to see Achilles getting some action. And a good relationship so far with Clint & Susan. A hurricane & tornado wreak havoc in their small town, white trying to solve a murder with several suspects. And trying to keep track of the residents that didn't evacuate, make for a fast paced story line.
This one was better than all of the rest by far! Every time you figured you knew what happened to the victim, a new twist threw things in another direction. I don’t want to ruin the ending, but the actual killer and the circumstances are very disturbing and a sad comment of where things sometimes go in this world of morals are off the rails.
This is the first book that I read in this series. Loved it. The suspense was very exciting. Now I will read this series from book one I highly recommend this book
After reading just one of B J Bourg's books, I've been a huge fan! The Clint Wolf mysteries just keep getting better! Great characters, wonderful mysteries, and good old fashion police work, keeps you on the edge of your seat!
This is another great book in the Clint Wolf Series! When you start reading this story, you won't want to stop until you discover who murdered Elizabeth Bankston! You will be totally surprised by whodunit!
There had to be at least one hurricane aimed at Mechant Loup
In this case, it was an actual hurricane with the accompanying storms and wreckage. I never expected the twists that came in this book. But I absolutely loved the ending!
'But Not Formidable' was very thrilling. The story line pulled me in from the beginning and kept me glued to the pages. Clint puts himself in some precarious situations. I can't wait to see how Clint and Susan go forward. A great add to your tbr list.
This installment had a different spin with the town battling Mother Nature on top of a murder mystery. There were so many heartfelt moments throughout the book. I am truly enjoying this series; each book is better than the last. I highly recommend!
I can't believe I have read 8 books in this series in less than three days! Barely stopped to fix meals as I wanted to see what happened next! As much as I want to start the next one, it's going to have to wait until tomorrow!
I started the series and before I was finished with the first book I was looking forward to the rest of the series. Fast paced LE stories that seem to have a twist in the plot.
I just finished book 8 of this series. I have enjoyed reading each book and marvel at how good each one is. I can hardly put them down. I’m looking forward to continuing with the rest of the series and highly recommend them to all mystery fans.
The author doesn’t ever want you to figure it out.
This is book #8 and I can’t stop! I really think he should give us at least a fair fighting chance to maybe know who did it! I’m hooked on his writing and will continue to keep trying to guess it right for once.
