The Aztecs believed that offerings of human blood and human lives were necessary to the continued running of the universe. Indeed, in Aztec myths the gods themselves make sacrifices of their own blood and even of their entire bodies in order to create a universe humans can live in and, in one story, to create humans themselves; humans therefore must make blood sacrifices in turn to feed the gods and to keep the universe in existence.

After a brief introduction to the Aztecs we get a good selection of myths and stories. These cover everything from politics, to everyday life and also the culture of their civilisation. There is bound to be a story that you will enjoy here.

However, despite such an interesting collection my favourite part of the book was the section between the introduction and the myths themselves. Tucked away there you will find a great description of the workings of the Aztec calendar. Complex is a good description of it. I re-read it 3 or 4 times to get my head around it but very interesting.

Pretty primitive and at times can get rather dull but we are talking about the Aztecs, an ancient civilization. Interesting enough but some of the myths were hard to relate to. If you think Celtic mythology names are hard to pronounce just wait till you read this. That being said it does explain why the Aztecs were such a brutal people employing the use of human sacrifice to placate the sun.

Well-written but short

This is a very short book that covers some Aztec deities and history. I appreciate the way that it was written to explain where the information is coming from and be truthful that the validity is solely reliant upon the source. Overall a good read and I learned about some alternate stories than the ones I had heard / read before. I wish it covered more.

No es feo el libro, pero si es frustrante que para poder aprender de mi cultura y del panteón de dioses de la misma tuve que leer un libro en inglés, por que no hay libros de “resumen” en español y los qué hay tienen un léxico complejo, solo quería una lectura amigable, interesante e informativa y mejor tuve que recorrer a los gringos.

I have been a longtime reader of Aztec mythology books. I have always loved the stories, but been confused by the tangled mess made of the telling and re-telling of these tales. This quick little read straightened out a lot of stories. I highly recommend this book as an Aztec Mythology primer.

I was really interested in Aztec myth but the stories were quite short and not as captivating as the title suggests. Overall, it was a fine introduction to Aztec myth but I'll have to look for other books on the topic.
