This was an excellent, well-written, inspiring story and one I thoroughly enjoyed reading. It tells how a group of friends, all in the BDSM Lifestyle, can see what Ruby and Evan can’t; their love for one another. All of them knew real love when they saw it because they too had had their own issues getting there. This is certainly a book I would have no hesitation in recommending.
It was at a small arts college in Boston over a decade ago that Allie and Ruby first met and became friends; both had a passion for art and a love of the BDSM Lifestyle. Ruby is in Portland for a 2-weeks stay and agrees to help Allie get her vendor booth organised for the upcoming grand opening of the BDSM Connections Event Centre. Allie wonders if Ruby will ever stay put; maybe she would if she had a reason. Evan is a BDSM Event Coordinator, who organises BDSM Conventions and Events all over the world; he is also a wanderer. Evan is popular, very down to earth and a stand-up man, who certainly knows his way around a dungeon. Ruby loves the intensity of a BDSM exchange of power, along with the excitement and unpredictability of new places, new people, new Masters. Working in the BDSM scene, Evan meets lots of female submissives and sexual masochists, many of them ready and eager for casual play. Rarely spending more than a month in any one location, Evan always makes it clear at the outset he is only passing through and whatever they share is finite by definition. When Ruby volunteers for Evan’s whipping demonstration, she distracts him; something in her gaze both thrills and slightly unnerves him. This clearly was not a woman swayed by what others did or expected. Intrigued, Evan silently promises himself to get to know Ruby better during his brief stay in Portland. Evan normally didn’t accept personal invitations from people involved in the BDSM events he helped to coordinate, preferring to scope out the local scene on his nights off; but this group is different. When Ruby challenges Evan, he agrees to play her game, but raises the ante. Ruby couldn’t recall the last time she had been so attracted to a man, but is sure this infatuation will run its course by the time they both said their goodbyes. Evan senses there is more to Ruby than mere masochism and wants to push her boundaries; he wants to challenge her, but also be worthy of her submission. This is a new feeling for Evan, but is Ruby ready for a new adventure? Ruby lives in the moment and right now she is happy; she trusts Evan and didn’t get that sense of neediness or expectation that so many men brought to a new relationship. Evan, like Ruby, seems content to take life as it comes, but Ruby is different and refreshingly independent. When Ruby confesses her dark secret fantasies, Ethan offers her the chance to seize another wild adventure in a life lived on the edge; one more leap into the unknown, one more thrill to be explored to the fullest and Evan is determined to give Ruby the experience she craves. But is this really what Ruby wants; if nothing else she learns from it. There is a definite connection and a strong D/s bond between the two which is unique; neither can deny it, but nor were they ready to admit it to one another. With no talk of what the future holds for them, suddenly their time together comes to an end. Ruby is off to Mexico. Left behind, Evan wonders why he has just let Ruby walk out of his life. Was it because he hadn’t done a good enough job of letting her know how much she meant to him; he had been in love with her from the second they met, but had never told her. What is he afraid of? Ruby hadn’t made any plans for the next great adventure because she had been waiting, hoping; didn’t Evan care enough to find out what she might be doing. Can Fate intervene and reunite Ruby and Evan, or are they forever meant to keep wandering? A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.
