“We are the one percent. In high school we are your Team Captains and your Prom Queens. We go to the best universities and have very successful careers. We do not find the bodies of dead Tango dancers on our lawns,” said Eli. On an early Monday morning in April, however, that is precisely what happened. The wealthy community of Laurel Lakes will never be the same. Coerced into cooperating with the police, Eli and his partner Max begin a probe on their own. With the aid of a traumatized police officer, and a socialite, the lies begin to unravel as one by one as they discover the secrets of the body on the lawn. (Updated 2020)
I'm afraid this did not work for me. I was overwhelmed from the sheer number of introduced characters within the first two chapters (that including the seven named pet boxers) ... this eclipsing the discovery of the body event. I was slightly thrown by a sudden shift in recollective POV to a secondary character ... so by the time we got to the hospital morgue for an unauthorized / impromptu post-mortem report (complete with unnecessary gruesome details) - I was done. DNF'd around the 18% mark.
I actually really enjoyed this book. While I think it was a mistake to try to introduce pretty much every person that lives in the town and I did have some trouble keeping who was who in my head to the point that by the conclusion I had to go back and rediscover who the murder actually was the way the story was told held me. The discription of the library made me want to have my own chair in a corner where I could sit and read without notice by Eli and Max and the Cook (the dogs however would be welcome to lay around me at my feet). I bought the entire 5 book (so far) collection and look forward to book number 2. If they continue to be this good it is too bad that no one has taken an option for a movie yet. Though I can't imagine who they could get to play the part of Bobby.
I think the storyline was great and the characters were quirky and fun. I had no idea who the killer was throughout the book and I love that when it happens. Looing forward to the hopefully the next book. Recommend reading.
