I can definitley see myself picking this up every Halloween season for years to come.

I loved the collaboration of different art styles.
I loved how in the first half all four stories combined to one running story even thought you couldn’t necessarily see it at the start of each new chapter.
The lore in the second half was my favorite.

The only thing I didn’t care for as much was the art in chapter three. It pulled me out of the story a bit.

Overall, this is a really fun read and a really beautiful book. I’m happy to have it and I look forward to pulling it out next year.

First off this cover is everything. Everything! It was fun revisiting the original tales in graphic novel form and seeing them from that perspective. The illustrations were great and it really just makes me want to watch the movie ASAP.

The 4 new tales, however, were just okay to me. The coloring and illustrations are gorgeous, but the stories lack the shock or suspense and reveals that the original 4 have. They were fun, but they weren't mind blowing.

Still a fun read and will revisit this on Halloween seasons to come. 4 stars!

“Trick r’ Treat” Graphic Novel

Can we take a moment to look at this cover? It screams Halloween 🎃.

“Trick r’ Treat” is definitely a Halloween Classic. Everyone knows Sam enforces the rules of Halloween. I watch the movie every year.

The “Trick r’ Treat” omnibus is the perfect seasonal read. It starts with an introduction written by Director Michael Dougherty, who expresses his gratitude for Sam’s rising popularity. The illustrations are so colorful and bright to really catch the eye.

The book is broken up into two sections. Section one follows the movie pretty well. Section two is framed by a grandfather telling his granddaughter four Halloween stories. I enjoyed all the stories except the 1950’s detective one because the art did not really fit in with the rest of the book.

The “Trick r’ Treat” omnibus is such a great addition to any Halloween or comic collection and is also a fun seasonal read. 4 ⭐️

The Trick 'R Treat omnibus contains the comicbook adaptation of the movie as well as 4 new stories.

The adaptation of the movie is broke up into 4 issues with a different art style for each issue. The adaptations are very accurate to the movie but lack some of the twists that link individual stories in the movie.

The 4 new issues are told is different time period and still revolve around Halloween and Sam. Nothing mind-blowing in these new stories but they are still fun. Again, each is issue is a different writer and artist.

Trick 'R Treat is one of my favorite Halloween/horror movies so I was pretty excited to get this. It was fun taking a look through the adaptation with different art styles. The new issues were also fun but don't offer the uniqueness of how the stories intertwine in the movie. The collection is put together very well in an over-sized hardcover and thick glossy pages. I recommend it to fans of Sam and the movie.

First half is a comic book adaptation of the movie that is - like many novelizations and adaptations - as interesting for where it differs as anything. The second half is four new stories, most of them historical, that play out like a "sequel" only insofar as that they are another anthology, covering stories about the magic of Halloween, all of which feature Sam in the background in some capacity.

All four of the new stories have essentially the same theme: witches as gentle if occasionally mischievous, misunderstood outsiders who practice Halloween magic and are scapegoats for the "moral majority." The themes feel plenty timely, more's the pity, if a bit trite and simplistic compared to the first half's less pedantic "talk shit about Halloween, get hit by Halloween" dynamic.

"You see, Halloween's the one night when some folks wear costumes so they can finally be themselves..."

I watched the movie Trick 'R Treat a few years ago and didn't really like it, but I thought I would give the graphic novel a go, to see if my feelings would change.

I did like this adaptation a little more, and I like the fact that there were 4 new stories added. My favorite was the last one "Monster Mash". The artwork was cool and the ending was heartwarming.

I also loved the introduction by Michael Dougherty, you can see that the movie he directed has a special place in his heart.

I love Trick ‘r Treat the movie and this comic is amazing! The first half is the comic telling of Trick ‘r Treat, and the second half is stories about Halloween “magic.” The artwork is beautiful and the stories creepy.

Liked this well enough, I guess.

Trick 'r Treat is the annual Halloween must-watch for my bestie and I, so when I saw that this omnibus was available somewhat recently, I had to get it.

The first half of the book follows the movie nearly word-for-word. However, instead of jumping around to different times of the night like the movie does, the chapters focus on one storyline each, like the quarry, the werewolf girls, Mr. Wilkins, etc. The way that the events are presented in the movie would not have worked as well here, so I was grateful for that change.

I liked a lot of the art, but some of it was just...not as pleasing to the eye.

I enjoyed most of the extra stories as well, especially Corn Maiden and Monster Mash. Seed had a really interesting premise.

It's a Halloween horror story (stories) so I get it, it's going to be scary and bad and gruesome. But some parts I just felt were too much & completely unnecessary example *trigger warning* ⚠️ what seems to be rape or sexual assault. I just can't wrap my head around the fact that this has to be part of the story to make it a scary Halloween horror story. Thankfully is not the main theme, and the situation in real life it's scary already so in a way I can see why but also I don't think it should be part of a story to make it scary. It's ridiculous and completely unnecessary. Anytime I read anything like that, it makes me question the author(I know it's based on the movie but still, even so).

Anyway, the rest was as expected Halloween scary. Nice illustrations, some made me turn my head away.

This is one of those cases where the cultural differences and the diverse upbringing shows up. I have not watched the movie on which a good part of this graphic novel is based on, 'Trick 'r Treat', and I wasn't even familiar with the whole concept and universe, even though you could say it's just your average Halloween stuff, with plenty of scares and a good dose of gore.

In any case, this is an entertaining read, specially for lovers of the festivity, and it showcases some beautiful art here and there.

For me, it's just an average volume with the right amount of appeal to be enjoyable, but I didn't love it, and I would even say the storytelling got a little bit chaotic sometimes, but it just fits the mood and the whole savagery of the theme, so no complaint there.

Trick 'r Treat is definitely a Halloween classic, and one I like to watch every year. It is perfect for a graphic adaptation, and I loved the bright colors and sharp illustrations. The whole package is really nicely done.

The original Trick 'r Treat story takes up about half the volume, and then there are four original tales that all somehow involve that tricksiest of Halloween goblins—Sam.

I would have loved to see some more representation from women in this collection as the creators are mostly all men. But it is a fun way to revisit one of my favorite Halloween tales.

Continuing my exploration into different genres with another graphic novel. This one is about the movie Trick 'r Treat. It was a straight-to-dvd-indie film that has now earned a place on the shelf with the other Halloween classics.

PROS
The book, although creepy and dark, was really illustrated beautifully. It covered the stories that intertwine on Halloween night in the movie, plus 4 other stories.

CONS
I wasn't a huge fan of the movie so the section that covered parts of the movie was okay. Still really great artwork.

OVERALL
Although I wasn't a fan of the movie, I did think it was original, equal parts funny and creepy, and it captured the spirit of Halloween night perfectly. The movie was okay but, as they say, the book was better.

I'll be the first to tell you that I don't watch horror movies but I love horror comics! I don't usually write long reviews but I am reviewing this. I am a huge fan of Fiona Staples (Saga) so I figured I'd at least enjoy the art. Ok, this graphic novel has 4 parts and each part is a different section of a collective universe.

Spoilers:

Part one is a typical horror story. It takes place in a suburban neighborhood where kids and families are actively trick or treating. However, each family has a unnatural incident and the neighbors or unaware they each of them will experience a horror-filled night. The first story was sort of predictable but filled with gore. The second story involved a sadistic teacher who is also a father who gets his kicks off poisoning kids with candy. His kid is getting on his nerves as he digs graves in his backyard. His neighbor shouts out to him. Remember this neighbor.

Part two was my favorite. In typical horror tropes, women are assaulted. However a group of girls decide to attend a Halloween costume party and while most of the girls are dressed either sexy or scary, these friends are dressed as vanilla Disney princesses. They lure men into the forest and eat them alive because they are on their periods 😆😆😆.

Part three is the neighbor who was asking sadistic dad what hr was doing. Creepy kids target him and he's having the worse night ever.

Part four was surprising. Instead of continuing in the present neighborhood it takes you on a blast to the past. Think Salem witch lore and noir horror storylines.

I never saw the movie Trick R Treat so I can't say that this graphic novel did it justice. However, the graphic novel does motivate me to watch the movie.

Hey, you ok? Oh, wait. That's right. There's another tradition, a very important one. . . always check your candy.
—From 2007 movie

Tis the season to be scary Fa-la-la-la-la Sam the Halloween demon and my favorite time of year.

It's has been revealed recently, that there is now a 15th Anniversary Exclusive Collection Edition but it will only be available at kickstarter.com Michael Dougherty original story Trick r' Treat perfectly represents the Hall🎃ween-theme (like no other) you can feel the love for this holiday dripping from every direction.

Filled to the brim with October goodness I can't express enough how much I personally love and appreciate this movie & just the story in general. Trick r' Treat is a anthology of tales that celebrates Hall🎃ween through four different horrific stories all happening on the same night interwoven together. Although, some people will probably be more familiar with Michael Dougherty other holiday horror work his 2015 Christmas movie Krampus which his version is also great. This anthology features a variety of genre staples like classic movie monsters to serial killers speaking of which, Mr. Steven Wilkins is my favorite character and he was the most grisly of them all. Trick r' Treat pays homage to this holiday while keeping its central theme of tradition.

Smashing jack-o' lanterns? Stealing candy? Believe it or not, I was just like you when I was a kid. Till my dad. . . taught me tonight is about respecting the dead. All these traditions, they were started to protect us, but  nowadays, no one really cares.

At the center narrative of this story is the insidious trick‐or‐treater SAM child-size entity while initially very creepy looking, but always appears to be harmless as he certainly is anything but that. Dress in his onesie footy pajamas and a purlap-sack wrapped around his enormous large head. But he still can be seen as another innocent kid hunting for (k)andy. In essence, Sam is the guardian of hall🎃ween intended to get rid of anyone who fails to show respect for this holiday.

As mentioned in the 1996 original film Scream " There are certain RULES that one must abide by in order to successfully survive a horror movie." The same holds true here in Trick r' Treat. For the characters to survive they have to honor and obey the ancient Hall🎃ween traditions and if you don't, you DIE! . . and won't make it to November for Thanksgiving lol Throughout the story Sam is often keeping a watchful eye, as long as you're celebrating the holiday properly then you're safe from his horrific holiday wrath. He's the character that ties all the stories together

Years later Trick r' Treat as become a MUST watch when celebrating the sp👀kiest of holidays along with Hocus Pocus both these stories are considered annual Hall🎃ween traditions. Many people would argue that John Carpenter's film Halloween is best this time of year for horror movies. Which is understandable and yes, it's certainly an obvious choice, but here's what alot of those same people don't realize and why they would be slightly wrong. Because while it may be called Halloween, it's actually (NOT about halloween at all) even though it does takes place on Oct, 31

Now, the hidden gem Trick r' Treat anthology movie not only is this story on Oct, 31 as well but it is in fact all about halloween. It's all about celebrating this holiday and capturing the true spirit of halloween. The greatest halloween-themed movie ever made.

So, you still scared to go trick-or-treating? Or did my stories help? I'll take that as a yes. Why don't at least try on your costume? It all still seems so scary Grandpa. All those people gettin' hurt or dead. All them monsters. Ghost, monsters, witches even death itself they're nothing to be scared of. Heck, that's why we dress up like them.

Yeah, but why?

To catch some of that magic. You see, Hall🎃ween's the one night when some folks wear costumes so they can finally be themselves.

The 2nd half of book Days of the Dead Are some different Sam-related tales that's isn't apart of the movie version for those of you who haven't seen it. I wasn't that interested in these stories and they didn't feel as halloweeny. except the last one Monster Mash 👈 I absolutely love everything single moment of this fucking awesome story and it had the best art. The other stories within Days of the Dead collection were well, I admit Corn Maiden was rather great and definitely horrific and seeing Sarah holding Sam's hand awww Me Loved. After what tragedy yet, cool looking death had happened.

I think what was bothering me for the most part with Days of the Dead was the kind of stories being told cause it wasn't necessarily halloween focused tales. But they all were still entertaining.

Everything about Trick r' Treat the movie is portrayed exactly the same in this novelization version including the sarcastic dark humor that we all loved, even the adorable but very dangerous Sam it's all here. And while, this particular story is just the film in book form and doesn't add anything new it's still fun to relive the joys of watching the film and Sam's love for Hall🎃ween through these horrific pages. But we do aslo get extra stories.

So I only recommend this. . .

1. If you're a die-hard obsessed fan (such as myself) of the movie Trick r' Treat or if you're someone who's a horror story & comic lover

2. And if you enjoy collecting nostalgia memorable items of all things Sam and just horror in general, then this graphic novel is for you and a nice addition to have in your collection.

TRICK R' TREAT [A] testament at its very best of any tale about halloween, the vibes and atmosphere of this holiday. That I'll worship for the rest of my life. 🍁 🧡 🍂🕯🎃

This was a great idea honey. Really. It's just magical. It makes me WISH EVERY NIGHT WAS HALL🎃WEEN

Overall, uh... not my favorite comic book of all time.

I'm not sure the comic book adaptation/novelization of the film Trick 'r Treat works, because you can't really do things like "Wilkins tries to hide a body but keeps getting interrupted, paced like sitcom shenanigans" in a printed form.

The original stories for Days of the Dead are much better, although I will say two things about "Seed": one, "Do what thou wilt but do no harm" is an incredibly modern idea, dating back at best to the 1940s and the emergence of modern Wicca. We don't know very much about what the early pagans of the British Isles did, and much less still about what they believed, but still. And two, the template of choice for a jack-o-lantern was a turnip, and then a potato. Pumpkins are from the new world originally and didn't need to transplant back (as is kind of implied at the end there). I know why it was a pumpkin seed because so much of the marketing around the Trick 'r Treat property is the pumpkin theme (Sam is, for example, a Pumpkin Person to an extremely literal extent). But the inaccuracies are not doing much for my immersion and enjoyment.

(Which is an interesting thing for me to dislike HERE when Krampus, Dougherty's other property, is also inaccurate to the real-world lore and I'm somehow fine with it. Maybe because Krampus doesn't lie about marginalized groups? Or maybe the inaccuracies are of a different character with which I'm not as familiar? Or maybe if I ever DO reread the comics I'll find I hate them just that little bit more after everything I've learned since acquiring them.)

All that being said I think the standout for me was "Echoes", with the art style and overall film noir tone adding something special, and at least one reveal hitting like a goddamn truck.

Fans of the Trick 'r Treat movie will enjoy this ten year anniversary collection. The first four chapters are a graphic novelization of the movie while the second half "Days of the Dead" show four new stories throughout Halloween history. Director Michael Dougherty provides and intro to the book expressing gratitude of Sam's rising popularity and Halloween greetings. Different artists showcase their styles with each story, and there are a few bonus art pieces at the end of the book. If you haven't seen the movie, watch it before you read this. It was great to see the movie in a different way, though the pacing moves quicker in graphic novel form. The bonus stories are framed by a grandfather telling his granddaughter Halloween stories. We start with a witch hunt in Ireland in the 1600s to settlers clashing with Native Americans in the 1800s to a P.I. investigating a missing person the 1950s and finally a tale of two friends up to mischief on one final Halloween. I enjoyed all the stories except for the 1950s detective one and the disorienting art style. Other than that, the Trick 'r Treat Omnibus is a great addition to anyone's Trick 'r Treat collection and one to get you into the Halloween mood.

When I decided to look for an adaptation of one of my favorite Halloween movies, I never thought that adaptation would become the first graphic novel/comic omnibus in my book collection. This 10th anniversary edition of Trick 'r Treat brings us the four stories told in the movie AND four new stories from writers that brought us Krampus, The Chainsaw Massacre, Bram Stoker's Death Ship, and Man Bat just to name a few. Though I think the best part is the single volume that holds all Sam's mischievous fun in one place lol!
I love that each of the four stories that make up the movie adaptation are marked as chapters, and that all eight stories are marked with Sam representing the theme of the story. The artwork throughout the whole book is amazing, but I think the story markers are my favorite.
The four new stories are a history lesson about Samhain and what it's called and how it's celebrated in different places; and of course how others perceive those that are different. And like the original four stories, Sam is out there reminding everyone exactly why they should remember the traditions and things that make Halloween what it is.
I give this book 5 of 5 Paws

Full of holiday frights, Trick ‘r Treat: Sam’s 10th Anniversary Collection adapts the cult Halloween film into a full-length graphic novel. Four intersecting tales of terror involving zombies, werewolves, and serial killers, are told as a pumpkin-headed ghoul surveys the Halloween activities of a small town. In addition to the film adaptation, a second anthology called “Days of the Dead” is included that feature four stories of Halloweens past (from the 1600s to the 1950s to present day) with witches, ghosts, and monsters. The writing is pretty good, capturing the devilish thrills and wicked humor of the series; though the anti-Church theme is a bit concerning (painting the Church as hypocritical and evil and witchcraft as natural and good). Each story is paired with a different artistic style (some of which are straight from the comic panels in film) that best highlights the tales particular setting and tone. Trick ‘r Treat: Sam’s 10th Anniversary Collection, while having a few rough spots, is fiendishly entertaining and fun.

A collection of short stories celebrating all things Halloween!

What I liked -
I really enjoyed the film Trick ‘r Treat so having that retold in comic form was fun. The initial batch of stories are what the movie is based upon (or are comic adaptations of the film, I’m not entirely sure which came first) and are well drawn and told.
The second half is a selection of non-film stories. The tales told here are fun and expand the idea (and timeline) of how people have celebrate Halloween and what happens to those that don’t, or won’t, acknowledge it.

What I disliked -
The stories are fun but very basic. The first arc sees children being killed in wickedly dark tales but the latter half of the collection takes it somewhat more seriously. This, in of itself, is not an issue but it’s a tonal mish mash at odds with the overall narrative.

Favourite panel/ moment -
Red Riding Hood’s double cross as the wolf was excellent.

3/5.
