Temptation's Darling

Rate this book
A disastrous debutante becomes the toast of the town with a little help from a friend of the Prince Regent’s.

Threatened by powerful enemies, William Blackburn, Earl of Ketterham, lives in exile in the Scottish Highlands with his daughter Vanessa. When she comes of age, William urges her to return to her mother in England to make her society debut. Raised with all the advantages and freedom a boy would have, Vanessa doubts she can fit into the world of ball gowns, parties, and high society. Nonetheless, she agrees to return to England, determined to end the vendetta against her father, never imagining the high price she will have to pay.

Lord Montgomery Townsend enjoys living on the edge, courting danger as he fixes potentially scandalous problems for the Prince Regent. While hiding out at the home of the Countess of Ketterham, Monty watches a disaster-in-the-making as his hostess tries to prepare her estranged daughter for a match with the pompous son of a powerful family. Puzzled as to why the fiercely independent Vanessa submits to being turned into a puppet and offered up to the arrogant rogue, Monty nonetheless steps in to make her dreams come true. But no good deed goes unpunished and soon he faces more pressing problems, including the temptation to upend Vanessa’s wedding plans so he can marry her himself.

In 1970, when she was still in school, she married Ralph Lindsey, becoming a young housewife. The marriage had three children; Alfred, Joseph and Garret, who already have made her a grandmother. After her husband's death, Johanna moved to Maine, New England, to stay near her family.

I enjoyed this book a lot, the Narrator Priscilla Carson did a wonderful job. The characters were passionate, caring and real. I haven’t read a contemporary romance in quite a while, I’m going to read more. I enjoyed all the relationships between characters, they were all believable and sincere. The story itself was very intriguing, I expected nothing less from Johanna Lindsey, she’s brilliant. I was very entranced from the start and never lost interest. I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen between a few characters. It certainly gives an addictive story with a happily ever after.

It's been a long time since I've read a new Johanna Lindsey book. This reminded me why I love her books and historical romances so much. Her writing just seems so effortless. The flow, the characters, the way she brings humor in her characters. It sucks me in every time.

Temptation's Darling has one of my favorite types of heroines. She's young but mature. Brave, bold but not harsh. She's a tomboy and a lady. The way Vanessa handled so many situations in this book made me a big fan.

I didn't know how I would feel that she was encouraging an engagement with another man from the hero, but I really have no complaints. You completely understand her situation. It left me wondering how Monty was going to fix this before it was too late.

In the mean time, we get good quality time with Vanessa and Monty. Enough time that had me loving them as a couple and rooting for a way for them to be together. Monty is was very entertaining. He's a rake but extremely charming. You can not but help to fall in love with his character.

We also get some fun side characters that came along for the ride. I actually really liked the guy Vanessa was trying to marry. I hope the author has a story for him. He was so interesting and made an impression.

I've missed reading Johanna Lindsey and she did not let me down in her newest Temptation's Darling.

Johanna Lindsey has been a prolific author for decades for good reason: she knows how to bring great characters to life while telling an interesting story that grabs the reader's attention and keeps it until the pages run out. This was another of those great stories, and I genuinely enjoyed it.

You know the story: girl (in this case, Vanessa/Nessa/Nessi) grows up like a boy; girl meets boy (Monty) when dressed as boy; boy figures it out; shenanigans ensue! That is a major oversimplification as most of this happens in the opening couple of chapters, so it isn't long before our main characters are clearly enamored with each other after much flirtation and innuendo, but it takes them most of the rest of the book to catch up with the rest of us. Vanessa is a little distracted, however, as she is determined to bring her father back from exile and will literally do anything: including dragging a rake with questionable morals to the alter to accomplish that task. Monty, also considered a rake but less deplorable, has vowed never to marry himself, but he cannot imagine why someone as intriguing, beautiful, unique, and captivating as Vanessa would possibly want to shackle herself to someone so unappealing as the target she has set. As her friend, though, he agrees to help her --- because who better than to teach someone to snare a rake than a.... fellow rake?! And let's throw in a random boy-king ward of the prinny under the guardianship of Monty along with gorgeous twin sisters of Vanessa making their debut just to spice it up a little more!

I loved the plot of this book, and the characters were fun and engaging. There were some twists and turns to the end, and those were very fun. My only complaint was that the steamy goodness wasn't so steamy... and it was very high-level (I like a little more kick to my romances, and Lindsey usually delivers more than she did in this one). But overall, a fun read.

Plot --- 4/5
Main Characters --- 4/5
Supporting Cast --- 4/5
Steam Level* --- 2.5/5
Violence --- nothing graphic
Language --- not egregious
POV --- 3rd

*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild; 2/5 - sensual but nothing descriptive; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere; 4/5 - yes please! ; 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all

I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Recomendable.

My rating is mostly based on the pace. It felt quite slow to me. Perhaps I'm judging it based on previous Lindsey titles, though. Temptation's Darling is really a departure from the feel of her earlier releases.

I did admire the characters. Both the main players were charming and head strong in all the right ways.

However, it was a struggle to keep turning those pages for most of the book. Also, the heat level is really low, which again felt like a departure for a Lindsey title.

It was enjoyable, but not enjoyable enough. Not only was the chemistry and tension lacking, but also the two main characters being ginger just doesn't sit right with my spirit.

Why does a headstrong and willful daughter on an earl want to marry a disrepute rake? To reunite her father with her family. Six years earlier the Earl of Ketterham, William Blackburn, fled England to Scotland with his daughter, Vanessa, to save his family from scandal after killing Henry Rathban in a duel. Henry's brother, wealthy and powerful Lord Albert, gave him a choice, exile or ruination of his family due to the affair between Henry and William's wife, Kathleen. Nessa has finally returned to England for her season reuniting with her mother and twin sisters. If she can get Albert's son to marry her, then her father can return to England. However, on her way home, she meets Lord Montgomery "Monty" Townsend and his traveling companions, Charley and Arlo. Monty is a self-proclaimed rake. Nessa, trying to disguise herself as a boy, accompanied by two Scottish brothers, join the trio, where they are all traveling to the same destination. The harmless flirtation, friendship, and teasing heats up to a mutual attraction between Nessa and Monty, but she is determined to marry Albert's son. An enjoyable historical romance that reminds you why the author is still popular after 40 years of writing.

I always love reading Johanna Lindsey, and this is no exception. I do love her stories. Always enjoyable and entertaining, and gripping.
If this writer is new to you, I would suggest reading the Malory series, if you haven't already.

This is a convoluted story. There was no one in this book that I liked. The heroine needed to stay the hell out of her parent's business and the hero groped the heroine every time he saw her. There are other things that happened that I just didn't care about.

Review:

This review was originally posted on Addicted To RomanceI received this book for free from Gallery Books in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Temptation's Darling is the last book from our beloved Johanna Lindsey, as many already know, this author passed away last October from a battle with cancer. I will admit that I wasn't sure I could get through this book and postponed it and even though  I received the ARC for it, I really struggled with the energy into picking this book up because I have such love for this author so I did need to give myself time to wait for when I was emotionally and mentally ready for this story. I first off want to mention that this book was such a darling read and I had such a blast with this book. No surprise considering how flawless this author's writing is, but whew it was so different from anything I have read from her previously. It really kept me on my toes ....in a good way.

Temptation's Darling begins with our heroine. Vanessa has been living with her father for six years, when her father was forced to leave England due to blackmail and a scandal and secrets held by her mother, she chose to leave with her father. And spent quite a few years with him in Scotland, but now the time has come for her to have her season and be with her mother and sisters again. Vanessa is not ready to give up her freedom but knows this is what her father wants for her. On her journey she meets up with the rake and friend of "prinny" who is on a secretive mission of his own. be a protector of a secret prince. Through some adventure, scandal, secrets and passion Vanessa and Monty explore their relationship and their love will be tested ....

Temptation's Darling is such an endearing story that tugged at my heartstrings and I held so many delightful moments in experiencing this story. It was so bittersweet at times, and not going to lie I did get pretty emotional while reading this book. I found this story to be truly delightful in every way and from the moment these two meet up on the road and save each other, I was warmed by their bond. Loved their charming bantering and the secretive sensuality that builds between them. Both are so fierce and passionate in their lives, and definitely delivers all the yummy vibes you come to expect from this author.

We get quite a conflict in this story though with the whole triangle thing going on. Of course, its not your dreaded love triangle. Since Vanessa is set to marry a man she doesn't care for at all, but doing it so her father can come back home, and she is put in the middle of a horrible situation to protect her family. We see some secrets revealed about her mother and her true intention and the pain that love can bring at times. But have no fear, because Vanessa and Monty find their way towards their HEA and its so beautiful and epically done.

Overall I found Temptation's Darling to be a romance that will endear its reader to the heart and soul.....entertaining, dynamic and energizing!

5/5⭐

It was a tough call between a two and a three star rating for this book. I went with three, since I liked about three-quarters of the book, but I would go for 2-1/2 if I could.
I really loved the relationship between the two main characters. She is strong and independent; he admires her for these qualities. The two keep up a clever and flirtatious banter and always seem to be on equal footing. Both are hiding secrets from each other, but they are also aware of this fact and don't become overly troubled by it. Some depth is given to otherwise supporting characters by giving them their own chapters here and there. Some of those characters do bad and foolish things, thinking they are doing their best to protect those they love, but we're led to understand their motives, if not agree with their actions.
I really liked a lot of things about this book, except the sex scenes-which were ridiculous-and the ending-which felt rushed and, I thought, shortchanged some of the "villainous" characters, especially considering the ability of the author to create sympathy for characters in other parts of the book.

Temptation's Darling by Johanna Lindsey

What I find to be most intriguing about a Johanna Lindsey story is not that it is a romance, but that her heroines are statement. Temptation's Darling is not the story of a victim. Vanessa is determined to live on her own terms, despite her sex and because of upbringing. I admire a woman who knows her mind and follows her heart. Vanessa still has much to learn about love, life and adventure. Monty could be the tutor of a lifetime, if pride doesn't get in the way. Temptation's Darling is a passionate tale of a courageous soul and an unpredictable love that will captivate the heart and inspire the soul.

I've been reading and loving Johanna Lindsey's writing for almost 25 years. I was eagerly awaiting Temptation's Darling release but although the story started of wonderfully it lost me almost half way through and never really caught my attention again. It really felt like a Johanna Lindsey-esque novel, like someone was trying to write like Johanna Lindsey, but it didn't feel authentic. The chemistry between the main characters was there, but the passion wasn't.

At the beginning, the story moves too slowly and didn't keep my attention well. After Nessi arrived at her mother's house, my eyes glued into the story.

I liked the wit and a sense of humor that she brings in her characters.

Nessi and Monty were delightful and funny. Overall it was a fun read.

I wish there's more story about Charley or Sebastian. But now she's gone.

Her last writing before she died. She was one of my favorite author. I will greatly miss her. Rest in peace.

3.5 stars, rounded up.

Lady Vanessa “Nessi” Blackburn has lived in Scotland with her exiled father, the Earl of Ketterham for the last six years, but now she is going to Cheshire to be reunited with her mother and twin sisters and to go to London for the season where she hopes to find a way to lift her father’s banishment.

Montgomery “Monty” Townsend, the youngest son of the Earl of Marlham, retired from the army at his father’s request and out of sheer boredom, started “fixing” potential scandals for the Prince Regent by acting as scapegoat for him. Currently Prince George’s amorous liaisons have set more than one angry husband after him and the Prince has yet another problem he needs handled, a problem that requires Monty to rusticate in the country. Lucky for Monty, the Prince has arranged accommodations with an old friend, Kathleen Blackburn.

Nessi and Monty meet on the road to her mother’s house, Nessi is disguised as a boy and appears to be traveling alone, so Monty invites her to join their party and quickly figures out she is not a boy. The shared secret begins a friendship between them and Monty’s support is invaluable to her once they reach her mother’s estate.

Once Nessi confronts her mother, she learns that her mom may have already found a way to bring her father back to England and Nessi immediately agrees to marry the son of the man that banished her father. The catch is the man – Daniel Rathban – doesn’t want to marry, he is an unrepentant rake who is completely jaded and has no interest in innocents. And for all her bravado, Nessi is an innocent and will need a teacher and she had the perfect man in mind – Monty! For his part, Monty is not happy about the engagement to Daniel, but Nessi will not reveal why she is so hell-bent on marrying him. All too soon, Monty realizes he wants Nessi for himself, but until he learns why she needs to marry Daniel, their chance fir love is doomed.

This was a cute story and I did enjoy it, but there is A LOT going on and most of it is ridiculous, plus just about every nobility title is used incorrectly and her mother’s title is so odd, that I can’t even begin to figure it out, the love scenes are tepid, the reason for Nessi’s father’s exile is lame and Monty is a bit hard to figure out – but for some reason, these things did not bother me nearly as much as I would have expected. The banter between Nessi and Monty is great, Nessi’s interaction with her sisters is spot on perfect, for the most part the book is just a lighthearted romp with a dash of drama and heartache, it is not perfect, but if you don’t try to take it too seriously, it is a very entertaining and enjoyable read.

¡feliz lectura!

Vanessa Blackburn has been in Scotland separated from her mother and living with her father. She has to return to England for her season and on her journey home, she meets Montgomery Townsend, a known rake. I have been a Johanna Lindsey fan since my teens and while this book had romance, danger and some intriguing plot lines, it didn't grab as some of her work in the past. For me, it was enjoyable and I loved the relationship between Vanessa and Monty but it wasn't what I would call, "unputdownable."
Thank you for this ARC in exchanged for my honest feedback.
