Arlene James has written romance for four decades, and has published 100+ novels. A mother of sons and now a happy grandmother to the brightest, most talented, and lovely of all granddaughters, she is finding her sixth decade to be great fun.

She and her very supportive husband of 45 years (whom she agreed to marry on their first date!) enjoy a busy social life and have visited much of the world. After calling Texas home for three decades, they now live in beautiful NW Arkansas.

Arlene grew up on a ranch in south central Oklahoma and still maintains strong ties in that area. She firmly believes that writing has afforded her the best of all possible means of earning a living, and credits a junior high school English teacher with proving to her that her dream of being an author was entirely achievable.

After 4 decades of deadlines and multiple-book contracts (for which she is deeply grateful), she is enjoying the ability to write exactly what she feels led to write on her own schedule.

First of all -- love that cover. It looks so candid and really fits the story. Second -- I adore a good rescue story and this is definitely in that category. Kathryn's distress is palpable when she meets Jake for the first time. Jittery, anxious, overwhelmed...I was nearly hyperventilating on her behalf! And there's Jake, all macho and clueless in an endearingly impatient way. It takes Kathryn a while to realize that Jake doesn't mean her any harm. Even longer to figure out that he really might be too good to be true. Love her shell-shocked wonder at the neighbourliness of the Smith clan and the way they take over her life! And little Frankie's boisterous exuberance for his 'KKay' adds an extra zest to the story. This is a second chance romance that's worth wading through the gnarly bits in order to reach the HEA. Page-turning romantical perfection.

3.5 stars. While there wasn't anything extraordinary about this book, it was a fun, light-hearted romance that I still enjoyed reading. I appreciated the interactions between the characters, and I especially loved the side character Tina. I think she is what made the story come together. The main character, Jake, bothered me at first because I felt like he didn't understand the basic concepts behind women safety, which kind of made me think it was written by a man for a minute, but after that I warmed up to him. I do feel like his density was played up a little bit much for the romance part, And I felt like Kathryn forgave him far too easily for some of the things he said. All in all though, it was a nice, easy reading romance.

I had a problem with the logic in this novel. Jake was worried about money for his business; but when Kathryn needed money, all of a sudden, he had what she needed. He wouldn't court her because he wasn't sure about the success of his business, but then became jealous when other men became interested in her. Then, when he decided he wanted her in his life, she was happy to go along with his plans. I felt that Kathryn needed to have a good discussion about the way Jake was behaving toward her. I didn't understand the title of the novel either. Jake was a mechanic, an ex-military man; he wasn't a rancher; his brother Wyatt was. I will add, however, that Jake's son Frankie was delightful, and I enjoyed his antics.

A fun and enjoyable read. Lots of romantic tension between Jake and Kathryn as he questions his readiness to date again. Frankie, Jake's son, is adorable. I like how handy Kathryn is with a sewing machine and talented with all things decor.
