So afraid new direction would suck! Ohhh noooo........ !!!?
Yep. Like many people I had to be dragged a bit to book 5 - because of the promise that the story would now be more focused on Jesse's (and Scarlet's) story. Meh. Jesse is for sure a favorite, a cornerstone of the tale, and I'm definitely enjoying his growth, experiences, fighting skills, likeness to his dad, his loyalty to his beliefs, to the cause, and his authentic willingness to put himself in danger to save others and for the good of the new United States.
That said ... Gunny is the REAL story here though, right?? *swoon* So I was devastated to have to let him go ...... (Noooooo.....!!!!! You can't make me, Casey! Ahem, I mean, ah, nothing. Forget it. Just got carried away there for a second.)
Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised! There was a hint that book 4 would be turning more toward Jesse's escapades as well. But then, both books began with the 1st chapter headings: "GUNNY."
Happy day!
Thus, both books were a balanced blend of all our favorite main and supporting characters. Some new folks as well, naturally. This time around we didn't spend much time with the upper echelon of villains, instead having the opportunity to hang out with their repugnant foot soldiers.
That said, in reflection now, I can see how heavily weighted the storyline is with Jesse and Scarlet material. But the sublime craftsmanship this author has in working with his characters, dialogue, and most importantly in this book -- the way he tells his tale; puts the chapters in order. The reader never realizes *just how much* Jesse and Scarlet there is. The story, the action, the battles, the emotions (highs and lows), and the adventure....... just flows ... from the first sentence until the soul crushing last sentence.
No spoiler there, lol - it's just painful when the latest book in one of the hands down very best series in the genre has been completed. And you can't yet see the next installment motoring on over the horizon. Now comes the hardest part --- the waiting. But the upside is I'll be able to catch up on the last two weeks of barely any sleep at all! The snippets of sleep I've grabbed at dawn - dreams full of trucks and war rigs and this weird Tower place, a mash-up of busy office life as usual with naked people in togas and gold strolling around, bizarre far away smiles on their mugs, zombies in chains in tow. Maybe I've been scarred for life?? Haha But in a good way. ;)
I'll be more than anxiously awaiting the next chapter of the tale. Every loose end niggling at me until then.....oh, the what-if's!...….
