Book 5 of 5 in the Zombie Road Series. The beautiful saga about surviving the zombie apocalypse that David Simpson created continues. This book focuses on the relationship between Jessie, The Disfigured Road Angel, and Scarlet, the daughter of the high priest of the Anubis cult. They are both damaged, young and have to bear a heavy burden for their age. Both have powers beyond human capacity. Both are the children and heirs to their fathers legacy and empires and they should be mortal enemies, not kinda sorta like each other...
Some people start to call Zombie Road a saga because David Simpson creates characters that are larger than life, real legends. Jessie, aka the Desfigured Road Angel is a beacon of hope for the lost and stranded in a unforgiving world where the Zombies are not the worse possible threat. Scarlet is this mysterious young woman, formerly devoted to her father, high priest of the Anubis cult, the one that wants to inforce the cult of the death as a religious belief in the new world and himself as high priest and mouthpiece of the God's. Both young people find each other against all odds... Scarlet is on a mission to kill Jessie but after getting to know him better she charges her mind....and day by day she falls in love more and more with the rebel with a heart of gold... The two young people are starting on a adventure that can break their hearts and also their neck.... Action packed read !!!! Highly recommend it!
WOW each one just keeps getting better and better!!!
Once again we hit the zombie road. And action packed thrill ride from beginning to end. An extraordinary cast of characters that seem to be drawn from our very own lives our own friends and family and maybe this is how we all could survive a zombie apocalypse. Each character is superbly thought out and brought to life and you are drawn in to the story and feel like you have a stake in what happens to them. No character in a zombie apocalypse book is ever truly safe good or bad but so far they rarely die for no reason at all. If you want an extraordinary book to read and series then you need to check out the zombie road series Follow Ginny and gracious and Jessee and Scarlet and slim Jim and his little cadre of buddies. Never forget that evil Casey or the whack a doodle cult leader you know the one he thinks he is a new best. Realistic and well thought out and very well told in an action-packed entertaining storyline.
I was exposed to the first four books in this series via audiobook and have been a total fan. This one was a different experience because I read it on my tablet. While the storyline was good, I had trouble with the many grammatical errors. I had to stop and go back constantly to figure out if I'd read something wrong or to try and figure out what I was reading. Scarlett posed the biggest problem because I couldn't remember if that was how she spoke on previous books. Jessie does make mention that once she's riled up, her English slips, but I don't remember it being so bad. This is one of my favorite SHTF series so I'll definitely continue, but maybe I'll wait for the audio version next time.
So afraid new direction would suck! Ohhh noooo........ !!!?
Yep. Like many people I had to be dragged a bit to book 5 - because of the promise that the story would now be more focused on Jesse's (and Scarlet's) story. Meh. Jesse is for sure a favorite, a cornerstone of the tale, and I'm definitely enjoying his growth, experiences, fighting skills, likeness to his dad, his loyalty to his beliefs, to the cause, and his authentic willingness to put himself in danger to save others and for the good of the new United States. That said ... Gunny is the REAL story here though, right?? *swoon* So I was devastated to have to let him go ...... (Noooooo.....!!!!! You can't make me, Casey! Ahem, I mean, ah, nothing. Forget it. Just got carried away there for a second.) Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised! There was a hint that book 4 would be turning more toward Jesse's escapades as well. But then, both books began with the 1st chapter headings: "GUNNY." Happy day! Thus, both books were a balanced blend of all our favorite main and supporting characters. Some new folks as well, naturally. This time around we didn't spend much time with the upper echelon of villains, instead having the opportunity to hang out with their repugnant foot soldiers. That said, in reflection now, I can see how heavily weighted the storyline is with Jesse and Scarlet material. But the sublime craftsmanship this author has in working with his characters, dialogue, and most importantly in this book -- the way he tells his tale; puts the chapters in order. The reader never realizes *just how much* Jesse and Scarlet there is. The story, the action, the battles, the emotions (highs and lows), and the adventure....... just flows ... from the first sentence until the soul crushing last sentence. No spoiler there, lol - it's just painful when the latest book in one of the hands down very best series in the genre has been completed. And you can't yet see the next installment motoring on over the horizon. Now comes the hardest part --- the waiting. But the upside is I'll be able to catch up on the last two weeks of barely any sleep at all! The snippets of sleep I've grabbed at dawn - dreams full of trucks and war rigs and this weird Tower place, a mash-up of busy office life as usual with naked people in togas and gold strolling around, bizarre far away smiles on their mugs, zombies in chains in tow. Maybe I've been scarred for life?? Haha But in a good way. ;) I'll be more than anxiously awaiting the next chapter of the tale. Every loose end niggling at me until then.....oh, the what-if's!...….
I enjoyed the story itself and found it held my interest, but I did not like how he suddenly decided that Scarlet has an accent that was not there until now. And the errors! Good grief, does nobody ever proofread or edit these books? There were more errors in this book than any other I have ever read. 1045 marked errors and the majority of the markings contain two or more errors. A very fair estimate would be 1500 to 2000 errors found, in a 394 page book! Not to mention, most of my reading is done late at night where I am not at my most observant and I am sure I missed many more. To me there is nothing that kills the flow of a book more than constant errors. This was a recent purchase from Amazon, and the book was released more than two years ago, so there is no excuse for the errors to not have been fixed by now.
I have enjoyed this novel immensely. Can't wait for next chapter, although I'm not looking forward to the demise of any of the characters whom I've grown to love. Specia!ly Jesse and Scarlet, Gunny, Hollywood, Shabby and so many others Buckle up, it's gonna get BUMPY!!!
I'll be reading #6 after I post this. I'm not looking forward to any of the beloved character's demise. My favorites are Jesse, Scarlet, Gunny , Hollywood and Stabby, to name a few. Better buckle up, it's gonna get BUMPY!!!! P.S. How about serving Casey the Cannibal a nice rare Madame "Power Hungry B***c" President Edmunds?
Jesse and Scarlet have bonded, fallen in love and are ready to take on the Anubis Cult. Gunny and Griz have planted themselves in with some of Casey's Cannibals in hopes of getting close to Casey to end him. Will they succeed or is this a suicide mission? There are traitors in Lakota, will they fail in their plans? To find out, you'll have to read the next book in this character driven, action packed series which I highly recommend.
This is an excellent book and an excellent series. I’ve been reading since book one but this is my first review. I loved all the characters but not Jesse. But now with the introduction of Scarlet he is starting to grow on me they make an excellent team, don’t let anything happen to her. I know Casey is the bad guy in the book but I am getting tired of him somewhat. There Hass to be new challenges in the storyline for Mr. Meadows and Company. Give the series a try I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
I highly recommend this book, and this entire series! David A. Simpson is one of my favourite authors. Great characters, and relationships! I just love the Road Angel, and his partner, not to forget the animals! This series is continuously getting better and better, and that when you don't think it is possible to get any better!! I highly recommend this series to anyone who is into this genre. :D
I see parallels in this book and what's going on in reality. Casey was a thug before the zombie apocalypse, and a thug after. I see people like Casey everyday living off other people's successes. As I read these books in aware of man will repeat the same evil things just to obtain power and dominion over others. For the remaining survivors, what will they do, stand united or divide and die?
I love this series! I’m writing this after finishing the first 7 books. It’s absolutely one of my all time favorite series. Do yourself a favor and pick up this series! You will not regret it and I bet you’ll be recommending it to everyone! Believable amazing characters. Great plot! Narration by Eric Sherman was spectacular! I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review
After waiting what felt like FOREVER, I finally got to read book 5 !!! Note: You'll really need to read books 1-4 before reading this one!!! I was not disappointed in the least which made the wait worthwhile. Fantastic characters and storyline!!! ACTION, ACTION and more ACTION!!!!! I can't wait for the next instalment!!!!
I love this series! The suspense in this, book 5, is intense in several places and I truly thought I had lost one of my favorite characters at one point. Want to know who? Grab the book and read. It’s definitely exciting and tension-filled. Please note there is violence and lightly hinted at sex. Now, I’m off to read book 6, and I’m very excited!
Well now. Things are happening fast and furiously. What’s to become of Jessie and Scarlet? What about Gunny and Griz? That snake Casey? The juggernaut that is the Anubis cult? And what the heck did Jimmy and Tony find deep in the lower levels of The Tower??? We will have to keep reading to find the answers to these questions.
We are again able to join Gunny , Jessie and the rest trying to survive in a world where the worst things are not Zombies but other humans. How do you survive ? Who will survive ?
Every book is better then the last and I continue to grow more attached to the characters. The story is strong and the characters move fluidly through their lives. As always, I look forward to the next installment. Thanks David.
A great book full of action and twists. I started reading and before I knew it I was finished. I love the characters and some I hate, but Mr. Simpson knows how to develop them in a way that they come alive. I can't wait for the next one.
I like the Zombie Road series. Basically, enjoyed #5. What I don't like is so many stories are left hanging . Nevertheless, I am invested in these characters and will impatiently wait for # 6.
I really like the story, but dang I feel like they just want more and more money. Are you going to keep this series going forever? End it already! I for one want a conclusion
Don't expect a romance novel. This is a zombie eat zombie world where unfortunately most people are worse than zombies. I love how the characters are developing and can't wait for the next book!
None of these books are for the light hearted. You can feel the heartbreaks and celebration of the characters. The honest brutality that the world is capable of as well as the smallest kindness.
This series is easily one of the best I have ever read! Characters are so real, like people we all know. The story just flows. Wish I could give way more stars!
