People are cities.

The last twenty-nine years have proven this true. People are stories wrapped in flesh; their pages waiting to be known, explored, arrived at. What you hold in your hands right now is a travel book about the many lives I’ve wandered into, the people I’ve encountered, the stories I’ve been allowed to tie closely to my own.

This book is about the people that you come across once, just once, yet profoundly affect you in ways that stay with you even after the years have passed.

It’s about the ones that haunt you, the ghosts you couldn’t forget if you tried; it’s about the ones you’d return to if you could.

This is a book about home existing in different people at different times and the joy that comes with knowing that there are people we can seek shelter in when the real places fail.

The cities of my life each have a name and remain scattered all over the past, present, and future; like lines on a map, shaping the geography of everything I’ve ever known. These are stories about the people who have charted the cartography of my world; stories about the people who took me into spaces of joy, sorrow, and every other feeling in between. I, for one, intend to tell them all.

As I travel on, I know that there are still a hundred places to explore and by that I mean: there are still people to meet, to re-encounter, to remain with, to love.

People are cities and I am one, too. Welcome. Make yourself at home.

words are magic. and when offered righty, they are decidedly sharp and wonderfully healing...all at the same time. I read this collection of story and truth in one sitting...and ruined many of the pages with tears. but maybe not ruined...maybe I gave of what I was given. You must read...and drink deep from this well

Like Lines on a Map is the type of book that would make you want to reflect on your life and your experiences so that you can write them out and make sense of all that has happened to you. It also reassures you that we are all in the same sea when it comes to life on earth and we just view the journey through different lenses. It also shows how important other people are in your life paving your way through this life like lines on a map. ✨

Never thought I would like non-fiction essays, but this is honestly one of the best books I have ever read. 🤍
