This is very much a book about Mr Oakley's career - the people he met, the places he visited and the things that he has done. It also treats us to his views [often strong] on events and people. It was published in 2001 and mostly covers the 1980s and 1990s. One of the most interesting things about this book comes towards the end when Mr Oakley passes judgement on issues that were current in Mr Blair's first term in office. His views on what would prove to be decisive or trivial and often correct, but just as often comically wrong. On those terms, this is a great book - but if your interests run to more modern matters then it is not for you. It is well written [as you would expect from a professional writer]. He brings vividly to life the politicians who he meets. fascinating stuff.
