Cemetery Things

Rate this book
For one hundred years, The Devil's Graveyard has been a place of horror, gruesome murders, and terrible mutilations. For too long have the locals allowed this place to take their loved ones. But one murder too many causes action. The death of a teenager spurs his family and the local authorities into action. Armed with little more than myth and superstition, the time for a showdown is long overdue. Can loyalty, love and the indomitable human spirit overcome the evil that lurks and feeds among the graves? There are good things, bad things, and then there are cemetery things.

There's a character in this book, easily the most engaging one, named Carter, a kid who loves scary stories and dreams of being a horror writer. He isn't very good just yet, but he tries and tries, hoping that practice will indeed make perfect. And it just made me think of the author, maybe he's the adult Carter, he tries. It's admirable, but it doesn't make for a good book. And so, while Cemetery Things may deserve A for effort, it's only a D for execution. The story is decent enough, but absolutely not original. The writing is serviceable at best, but flat, clichéd and occasionally corny. The characters are much along the same lines. Overall it's just too jejune. Spelling errors can be overlooked, but incorrect use of literally, for example, is more glaring. Naming the caricature of a protagonist Ed (Edgar) Poe is just silly. The romance subplot oozes cheese. These things would normally be distracting, but here they are just on par with the rest. This was a kindle freebie and it managed now and again to ever so slightly entertain for a few hours, but it isn't something to recommend. Too many good books out there to be read.

Kind of creepy, which is exactly what one would expect. There are zombies, a witch, a "thing" from the depths of hell, multiple murders in the most grisly, obscene manners, and other spine tingling events. However, the most insidious, detestable horror is committed by a human being who is highly thought of in the community. What really makes that extra creepy is the fact that such "highly thought of" pillars of the community quite frequently DO turn out to be the villians in real life! Pick up a newspaper, just about any day you choose, and there will be a story about a child-molesting teacher, a politician caught in an act of infidelity, an elected official accepting a bribe to show favoritism to a personal friend, etc. But I digress. This was a pretty decent story that ended well, in spite of all the inhumanity along the way. I recommend it, even with all the gore... but only for people who LIKE gore! (And I'm not talking about Al.)

Top flight!

I've been looking for a satisfying scary novel for months now. I finally found it in this submission! It is up there with the really great ones: smooth as Serling, twisted as Poe (the author not the character). Keep 'em coming. Latch onto them right away!

Spooky!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The boogeyman was yucky, nasty, gross... and he wasn't even the one who was killing everybody.

Short Small Town Horror Story

I enjoyed this piece of horror writing set in a small town which as many books will attest doesn't limit it to small horror. The author moves ata quick pace setting up all the history and context and running the players to the climax. I enjoyed the cast of characters and their relationships to one another were great. The horror involved was good too with a somewhat original take on very old subjects. I just kinda wish it had a little more substance as it seemed hellbent to get to the end but I would've enjoyed some more time with the characters. Still recommend though.

Cemetery Things

The story of Brent Dodd, returning to his childhood home in Cotton Gin for the funeral of his younger brother, is very good. The author has talent and imagination. I would have given this story four stars if not for the abundance of spelling and grammatical errors throughout. I think someone should proofread this a little better and re-release.

Lots of irritating errors. Did anyone proof read? Good ideas, but story had more potential than was written.

Great book. Gory, chilling and entertaining. Original tale of a spooky cemetery. Excellent characterisations and unique writing style. Vivid but with an effortless flow.
