Plot: The story is different from your standard thriller. It is gruesome, gory, filled with blood and shocking, vivid images. I commend the author for writing about such a terrible incident without grossing the reader out.

Narrative: The narrative is excellent. The way the story pans out is breath-taking, with a cliffhanger at the end of each chapter, making you want to read just a few more pages before you put the book down.

Characters: The depiction of the characters is a bit confusing, especially because there are so many Police officers, it gets a little difficult to distinguish between them. Other than that, most of the lead characters seem to be suffering from cases of mild amnesia, especially at times when you would wish they would clear their head and think straight.

Language: Well, if you've been wondering why I gave the book only 2 stars even though almost everything I've written about it till now is positive, here comes the let-down: the language. The writing is immature, making it come across as if the author hasn't read many books before setting out to write one. Some descriptions are jarring and out of place, like 'her eyes were compactly shut' or 'the sob was generated within the room'. Some descriptions would make a seasoned reader cringe, like 'As the shutter of her eyes opened slowly...', 'she walked sinisterly', using 'Vocalised' in place of 'said', or the word 'limper' for a person with a bad leg. The inconsistencies in the text make it appear as if the author used the Thesaurus without truly knowing the meaning of the words or their usage.

Overall, the story was good and the way of telling it was excellent, but because the writing was so bad, I didn't quite enjoy what would otherwise have been a wholesome thriller. I wish more authors in this country followed Stephen King's advice on writing:

If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot. There's no way around these two things that I'm aware of, no shortcut.

If this book is adapted into a movie or a web series count me in, I love it to the core. One of the best thriller I read so far. This book keeps you hooked from the first paragraph itself.

The plot revolves around a girl being kidnapped who doesn’t remember anything and develops into her recalling all the events. The book at the starts seems like a horror read but later develops into crime thriller.

My favourite characters are the three policemen, I could love to see them solve more of such cases. One surely wouldn’t regret trading their sleep to read this book. It is one of the books which send a chill down your spine and keep you glued till the very end. There were times the character development seemed incomplete because I was more focused on knowing what happens next.

I would definitely recommend everyone to give this book a shot.

The writing was very gripping and captivating. It kept me wanting for more. There are not many grammatical errors as such. And the language used is quite simple. The character development would have been better and more defined overall it’s an amazing book for a debut. The bar sure is set high with this book.

It was a brilliant book. I don't usually read new authors and don't write reviews unless the book is either too good or too bad. I picked this up from amazon at a discount along with Bhagat's new book as it showed in my recommendations. The appealing name and reviews tempted me to buy it and I must say, I don't regret my purchase even one bit.
The book is insanely thrilling and left me wondering so much towards the end. First I thought it was a compilation of 3 stories, but soon found out that it was written like a screenplay in multiple point of views and multiple time segments. Like a great sweater, the chapters were so well woven together to meet in the middle that when the stories converged, it felt like the chills on my body would never disappear.
This was so much better than Bhagat's book which I read before this one. There seems a lot that this author can offer. I just hope that he feels motivated enough to tell us more stories in a similar fashion and does not get sucked into the business of churning material just for the heck of it.
The book is very visual. It demands you to explore your imagination. It was like watching a movie but reading it.
The climax is still giving me chills. All the chapters with Manoj were damn good and so creepy that it was easily a psychological horror at its best from a new author.
I have some reservations with certain things, but I will be liberal in rating this book because it managed to stick to me like a glue till I finished it. Last time that had happened was when I read Digital Fortress
Looking forward to read more such intelligent stuff. Finally an IITian came up with something worth the degree and not some casual college romance story.

5🌟 is actually quite less for this maze-like story.

Thinks of devil and devil is here is a cliche now, but newly form cliche would be definitely, when the devil whispers or when you pray to god, the devil hears you too.

I bite my nails so much now I have to use DIY for nails to read his upcoming book.

The story goes as the girl found herself in the most haunting situation and was confused that is she dreaming or it's a reality. Then the chase begins in her mind about her whereabouts. And that horrific sounds she kept hearing. Then in between, it turns into a horrific crime and daunting scenes which were scary as visualizing and all that held my breath till I read further. It was a never-ending roller coaster ride. And you never know what devil will put in front of you. At once you will feel it's all happening in front of you and would be so scared to wish or think anything.

Every paragraph was throwing a surprise. I had to read some paragraphs again to gulp some thrilling scenes. It has many characters and their basic details perfectly mentioned and easy to imagine everything.

It's full of unpredictable twists and turns. Once you will think he is mastermind than the next moment that would be a victim. It helps you to solve a puzzle and help to think before moving to the next page or chapter.

As you will approach towards ending it will force you to read slow to gulp everything and at the same time, you would feel like to know the ending.

You don't need detective-like skills to read it. It will teach everything one should know.

*Highly recommended***

When the devil whispers by Ajinkya Bhasme. I got to know this book from the page @The Bookoholicks which I'm following. When I saw the post, the cover of book catches my eyes at very first sight and so do the title, absolutely. Catchy yet spine chilling, my blood ran cold in many places while reading this book. This book is mystery, crime thriller. Murders and dark crimes among children are ultimately unredeemed. It seems horror at first, there took twists in the middle, the plot took into something different like investigations, blood, headless body, bones, darkness, screamings...etc. the characters are described well. The narration of the real incident is actually commendable and having fast gait that made me hooking in an one place and kept me turning pages. The horrible things in this book kept me grip from very first page. My mind was questioning me what would be the next from the chapter ONE. When the turns came it unfolded one by one queries of mine. This book is the masterpiece of mystery, horror and crime thriller which giving me nightmares till now(that is the part of thriller/horror genre). And I'm scary enough to step up terrace all alone or to go in darkest places like I feel trapping in it and if a little sounds rose I felt something/someone is hiding there. One of the Must read book, to the people who loves suspense, horror, fiction, crime thriller.

Extremely alarming

This story is about a girl who wakes up in a dungeon and realises she has been kidnapped but cannot recall the incident. Slowly, she starts remembering in bits and pieces what led up to her kidnapping. The final revelation is bone chilling!

This is one dark and fast paced crime thriller. With twists and turns in almost every chapter, this book will keep you hooked till the end. The author has done a great job, considering this is his debut novel. However, there were some parts that left me confused.

First of all, the title and the initial pages of the book made it seem like it was a horror novel but along the way it transformed into a crime thriller. Sometimes a lot happened too quickly which made me go back and forth quite often which hindered the reading experience. I feel more time should have been spent on character development as there were times when I didn't care for any of the characters at all and was more interested in knowing what would happen next and how it would end.

Despite the flaws, this was an intense read and the last quarter of the book was unputdownable. The way everything fell in place and when the truths were finally revealed, I was horrified and exhausted (in a good way). The trio of police officers was the best out of everyone and if this is turned into one of those detective series, I would love to know more about them and will definitely read more books about them solving murders.

This story just needed a bit more polishing and better execution and it would have been a hard hitting 5 star read. The author seems promising and I will definitely read his future books.

The story is not for the faint hearted. I read this book at my native place at night and I immediately realised it was a mistake. It simply cannot be read in the dark, else it will haunt you. In the first few pages itself, Bhasme has created this spooky atmosphere which gives you an idea of what to expect from the book. The moment I was on chapter 2 with the bathroom scene, I knew it was going to haunt me forever. The place where Shalini was kept, keeps flashing in my head again and again. The twists at the end of every chapter made the book so interesting that I had to read it through. The vivid description and the language that the author uses does poetic justice to the plot. It was a fresh writing style that I haven't come across yet. I found it great because it is contemporary and he doesn't beat around the bush with pointless words. There are certain quotes from the book that will stick with me for long.
My favourite character was Alka. She was made for this book. I like the detectives too. The way everything falls in place towards the end sent chills up and down my back. I can't wait for a sequel if there is one. And if some amazing movie is made out of it, take my money already.

Today I will talk about a book whose cover will not fail to catch your eyes at the very first sight ! And of course the title is suspenseful and absoluteky quirky.

The mysterious events start from the very first page where a lady is trapped in a wet , dark , isolated dungeon.
The torture is gruesome.
The very mention of the fact that this story is inspired by real life events made it a more engaging read .
Either she is in her dream or she is having hallucination of some kind with a brutal supernatural type of force in her vicinity.

It seems first like a horror story but then the plot twists into something different , intriguing with thrilling and bone chilling crime mystery.

The characters are described well by author Ajinkya Bhasme with the backdrops and situations of investigation and search by police are aptly narrated.

The narration style is actually commendable having fast pace that made me keep turning pages. It will keep a reader in its grip from the very first chspter keeping you question whats going on and by slowly unfolding what is behind all the uncanny events till when the big turn comes .

A book which gave me nightmares for atleast two days, its a spine chilling read with first page book is going so scary and setup is like that you feel like trapped in it if a little sound come in your house and you just feel like someone is there.
I pick this book when my husband was away from home for his meeting and me n my son both were just reciting Hanuman Chalisa before going to sleep so you can imagine how this book affected me.

Best part of book is after 4-5chapter horror is finished and suspense is start and it continues till the last page.story is taking so much twist and turn which keeps you up on your seat and you can't keep calm what next.
It's a must read for those who love suspense and thriller with extra horror tadka.
Book is based on true events and after finishing book I google about this case and my body starts shivering with fear, what kind of people we have on earth .

You know the thriller story is truly thrilling if with every couple of pages you are left with another sense of "what the fuck this just happened" And you want to know more.

This book start slows for initial 3-4 chapters but then pickups the speed and takes you on a roller coaster ride. One thing I liked about the book is that author Ajinkya Bhasme kept the language very very simple and has focussed on the storyline and plot which I think was a good move.

It's a must-read for anyone who is into thrillers!

This story is fast paced and keeps you guessing the whole way. It did take me a bit at first to get a feel for the rhythm of the book and structure. Once I was able to adjust to this though I found myself engrossed in a story of mystery that kept me on the edge of my seat.

What I liked about this story was how it changed point of views, giving the reader insight into the different elements going on in the story. The story also jumps around somewhat, so that keeps the reader guessing and problem-solving.

This story takes on some dark issues, bringing light to some of the dark corners of society. While it has violence, the story itself shows how staying strong can help you get through many situations.

If you are a fan of mysteries and enjoy stories that are fast-paced, then you will enjoy this novel.

Some names give away a lot while some names are confusing. 'When the Devil whispers" partially belong to the second category as I started reading it thinking it as a "horror" novel. However, it is not but the initial build-up was really creepy and nice. It starts with the disappearance of a character Shalini and afterward what happens and WHY.

The plot unfolded a bit unevenly, which is okay, considering it is a thriller. Some of the gruesome scenes are demonstrated really well. However, there were a few times, too many things were happening, and instead of making progress with the plot, it was becoming little too confusing. May be, that was the intention, if that's the case, I am not sure, why.

We get to see some backgrounds of the characters, but the story needed little more depth. In the end, a lot of things remained unexplained. A lot of Whys remained in my mind that I couldn't find any answer of.

The plot was fast-paced and interesting. It tried to divert the reader's attention to other things really hard and those tries seemed honest. However, at times, it was little too 'Bollywood-y" if I may say so.

It is a debut novel and I really like the concept overall. If you are on a journey and looking for a fast read, you can take this book. However, there was an obvious problem for me, which I couldn't really overlook even after trying and that is- the choice of words. It was too simple. I have no problem with 'Indianized' use of English but the difference between a blog post, an average book and a great book is often the choice of words and there I found this one lacking.

Having said that, do give it a try. It is not a bad read.

My Rating- 2.5/5

A fair warning, this book is not for faint-hearted people. And don’t pick it up at night when you are alone. Unless you are one of those people who get thrill out of this, then you’ll love it. Ajinkya has created a fiction around a real terrifying incident that shook the country. I tried reading this book at night and had to keep it down because of the gory details and then again while travelling. Because this book needs you to focus on each and every aspect as the author has planted clues in every chapter.
The book starts with Shalini waking up in an enclosed structure. She doesn’t remember where she is and how did she get there. She sees another man in close proximity who turns out to be the one guarding her. She tries to remember and sees flashbacks from the day she was kidnapped. She is trying to figure out what exactly happened. At first, it feels like a horror book, but with chapters turning, it turns into a psychological thriller and then a crime horror. Ajinkya has planned the whole story very well. As someone who reads a lot of thrillers, I wasn’t able to figure out what was going on and who is the real culprit. The whole time, you feel like you know, you have gathered the clues, and you have found the culprit, but the end will leave you shaking. It’s chilling and the brutality will give you Goosebumps. Every chapter ends on a cliff hanger, making you read the whole book in one go. When all the clues plotted throughout the book converge at the end, it will blow your mind!
The chilling story feels too real because of the narration. You will be able to imagine Manoj struggling with his visions and Alka’s shallow breathing every time she gets an anxiety attack. All the characters are well developed and well researched. Following the police officers through the case and decoding the mystery is another high in the book. Everything put on the stage has a role to play and justifies its presence. Be it the various police officers, windows, sofas or the sounds. Everything has a reason. Initially, the details may overwhelm you, but it all comes to a satisfying and well-plotted end. It’s a roller coaster ride and will make you bite your nails in anticipation. The language is natural but there is an overuse of ambiguous words which do irritate a little. Once you are done with the book and have calmed down your racing heart, make sure to read about the case on Google. You will realise the masterpiece Ajinkya has written. ‘When the Devils Whispers’ is a must read.

IT IS A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE SPECIALLY FOR ALL THE DARKNESS LOVERS. 😉❤️

A warning : And it is something which you cannot leave if you picked it up. But make your heart ready before picking it up for the read. And do not read it at night if you are emotional or sensitive cause this can actually give you nightmares. If you are the one who loves thriller with a mint of horror, then it is for you.

The author has done a great work in this book. It’s an very amazing fiction created around a real terrifying incident which took place in the country. The narration is superb and it keeps you hooked althrough. I would suggest you to pick it up when you are focused cause you are gonna need it at every page of the book.

It is actually hard to say something about the book in words because it has already been added to one of my favourites and I also don’t want to reveal anything it contains or any of many suspenses which it holds.

Every character of the story is very important and you can soo imagine and feel every small to big detail of the characters. Whether that is their swallow breathing, anxiety attack or fear and courage.

One second whoever seems victim the next moment that may become the culprit. And knowing the mastermind after the full amazing suspense ride is just shocking.

In The end where you will fill up the puzzle with all the pieces, that is gonna blow your mind. It is one of something which is gonna break your every pre-head thought.
Even the placement of things like sofa, refrigerator, table, bed, are gonna make you feel so real that it seems like everything is happening just in front of your eyes.

I am already a big fan of the book and it is something I would love to read again to get the same thriller feel. I loved the work of author a lot and can’t actually wait to see his next book. It’s truly an mind rocking book and one of the best thrillers.

TDLR;An earnest attempt that fell short by a considerable margin.

Backstory - Based on the story of the two sisters who nearly had the dubious distinction of being the first women to be executed in India since 1955, and only the second overall (Though their sentence was commuted).

Saving Grace -
1. The actual premise of the book is not that bad.
2. In the initial chapters, a sense of mystery and horror is effectively maintained.
3. The brief action sequence in the last 20 pages adds an engrossing element of horror.

Things I absolutely hated-
1. The editing mistake - character names have been exchanged making it sometime confusing to follow the story. Also mistakes in grammar are painful to read.
2. The flow of the narrative is clunky and the writing is plain bad. Not allowing me to get into the groove of the story.
3. A lot of loose ends and gaping plot holes in the story.
4. Although looking at the original story the protagonist was pure evil and had no shades of grey but the book fails to provide the motivation and threat level of the character i.e. making them as an off screen looming figure didn’t help the story at all.
5. The kidnapped victim’s family decision making is the most ridiculous and lacked a basic common sense.
I don’t know why this book has 4.4 rating !
P.S.- Here's the actual case on which book is based -
Also a movie on this Posham Pa (2019)

🌠PETRIFYING!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌠Such a brilliant thriller!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌠First of all, thankyou so much to the author for the copy :)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌠There's no way anyone would believe that this book is written by a debut author. I mean if you're doing this with the first book what will you do with the next one.
You nailed it. You literally nailed it.
I was hooked from the very first page first paragraph!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌠I was so eager to read this book because of its spooky cover and title!
I was reading "IT" when I got the book. And I didn't wanted any mixups so I read different genres in between and after reading 4-5 different genres I finally picked up the book.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌠One of the best thriller I've read so far. I was getting goosebumps while reading it. The horror this book gave me at start was creepy as hell, I couldn't move from my chair the night I was reading it. But later it evolved into crime thriller. It kept me glued till the very end.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌠I read this book at night and realised after a while that I shouldn't have. You simply can't read it in dark else it will HAUNT you. In the first few pages itself, Author has created a spooky/haunted climate which tells you how the rest of the book is going to be.The twist in every chapter made it more interesting.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌠Above all else, the experience I had reading this thriller/horror was insanely satisfying.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌠And the note splendidly written by the author is a cherry on top for me!
It feels good when you see your name written by the author with a note that makes you smile and encourage you to read the book ASAP!

"Don't you pray for help again. Because, when you pray to God, the Devil hears you too."

Waking up from a nightmare in a dungeon, Shalini is disoriented. When her eyes gets accustomed to the darkness, she realises she's not alone.
Stuck in the dungeon without any memory of the recent past, she is yet to encounter what awaits her in the darkness.

Two case investigations, two different places. In Sangli, the missing case of Shalini is investigated by the trio - Prashant, Deepak and Ashwin. At the same time, the case of missing children is being investigated in another place. Are these cases interconnected?

The title is catchy. The story is gripping and narration, engaging. Few chapters contain gruesome description which gives you nightmares. The story is structured well. The fact that story is based on real events makes it more intriguing.
I love the way all the mystery unravels in the last few pages. This book will keep you hooked till the very end.
Highly recommend to all crime thriller lovers.

More than 5 stars🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
Mr Bhasme's avant-garde style of storytelling which keeps you in suspense and at the same time giving you subtle yet noticeable clues making it feel like you are in a horror film.
I had never known about these killers until I had read this book. The way he wrote the characters chilled me to the bone since he portrayed them as they really were. Simple looking malevolent humans among the seemly harmless strangers of everyday life.
I also made me contemplate how we failed in delivering justice to the victims in such an advanced nation. I appreciate him for highlighting mental health issues of schizophrenia in the book.

"Don't pray for help again. Because, when you pray to God, the Devil hears you too"
- When the Devil Whispers by Ajinkya Bhasme

A book which is so excellent in terms of the plot. The writing is raw and although the pace builds quite gently initially, the story builds itself into a well-crafted concoction of a horrifying reality.

The fact that it is based on real events
really exposes how darkness can drain every ounce of humanity in people.

It's a great read for all those who love suspense and crime.

A gripping gory thriller that sends chills down the spine.

In witnessed a spine chilling writing for the first time. The narration, setting and description everything is gripping.
The issue is author seem to stall the readers from story with good writing, ending despite gory wasn't big of a punch for all the build up.
Apart from that it's one of a kind book. Kudos to Ajinkya. Worth every penny.

"Don't you pray for help again. Because when you pray to God, the Devil hears you too." - @bhasmewords, When The Devil Whispers

We are all afraid of the darkness outside but what about the darkness brewing inside us. That is what we need to be scared of because when we talk to our angels, our inner demons listen too.

Shalini, a girl next door, works in a construction site. A man is following her for a long time and one day she disappears and found herself in a place where life is worse than death.

Will Shalini be able to fight her inner demons and be able to find the light at the end of this endless tunnel. This book would take you on a roller coaster ride where after every few pages, the name of the villain in your head would change.

It will keep you hooked till the very end. I will rate this book a 4/5

The story is based on real event and has obvious references to the horrific crime that rocked the whole Maharashtra. The two sisters and their mother who had started a ring of kidnapping children who would pickpocket and later, brutally tortured and murdered. I watched a series based on this inhumane crime done by mother- daughters trio (which I didn't liked). Though here the author's creative differences bring in fresh twists and added flavour to the narrative. It is gripping and fast paced. The suspence keeps readers on the edge of the sit. At first it seems like a horror story but then with each chapter unfolds the real mystery which unveils the sinister crime done by a devil in human's disguise.

it is simply an amazing book.. lot of suspense... you wouldn't be able to guess whats going to happen next.. if you are a mystery freak you'll surely love this book.. It only leaves me with goosebumps thinking of what must have happened in reality.. especially a climactic scene with Manoj in it..
I would rate this an overall score of 4.8/5
Plotting: 5/5 (I don't think anyone will see it coming.)
Language usage: 4.5/5 (It is simple but relevant to the story. In places poetic too.)
Length: 4.5/5 (Not too long, not too short. Ends when expected)
Character descriptions: 4/5 (Leaves somethings to imagination)

A must read for all mystery thriller fans

A must read.
The Author has beautifully crafted the characters and their traits. The Suspense in the story will keep you guessing, and there will be a twist to the story.
A brilliantly written and plotted mystery, a miasma of wretchedness and hate; a book that I devoured but deeply.
