The Narrative: Life and Opinions of a Black Man

Rate this book
By Phill Brown
The narrative - more like a musical vitamin - a supplement if you will, is made for the sick and malnourished heads of hip hop culture as well as those whom deny being “hip hop” themselves, yet find themselves directly and or indirectly connected to it’s culture. Yes. That is not an overstatement or cute prose. The narrative does in one dose for the mind and soul depleted of black history, as it relates to hip hop, what a multivitamin does physically for the body depleted of fruits and it rejuvenates, reinvigorates and enlivens! The narrative is just that powerful! Dice has managed to encapsulate the fragmented pain, brokenness, and struggling pride of post-diaspora Black America in under one hundred and twenty- eight minutes. After the careful listening and true ingesting of the entire narrative, one can’t help but to feel the fog and heaviness of self-destructive malaise lifts and replenishes the listener with a new clarity of mind, love and even blackness!
And one may “how does Dice do this?” Well, simply put, he takes us back to eighties, and then he takes us back to the nineties, and then reminds us that - “niggas need reminding!”
From the rich historical lyrical content of his rhymes that inter-splice riveting poetry, to the harrowing scenario samples that transition us from one song to the next, to the underlying urgency and tense energy that one feels bleeding through every second of electric cords, sharp snares, and soothing the listener’s body eats, and eats well!
