This book is a brilliant concept. You can use it: as a guide to walking (not necessarily in a straight line!) from distillery to distillery; to plan lovely days out in the Lakes; as a highly entertaining read.
So what's it all about? "How d'you fancy a mad Lakeland distillery tour?" So said hair-brained ideas factory Beth Pipe to social media pal Karen Guttridge, whom she had never even met! Karen immediately agreed, and with only a sense of humour and a love of gin (etc.!) in common, the two women set off on a selfless mission to find and taste the best spirits and beers our English Lakes have to offer. Join the intrepid pair as they brave weather, hangovers, heavy rucksacks, motorised sheep and far too many cakes, all in the name of celebrating and spreading the word about Lakeland's excellent gin, whisky, beer and vodka. And there are a surprising number of these small-scale, high quality producers in the Lake District, all of them passionate about what they do and creating divine drinks for all tastes. Whether you decide to follow in their footsteps or just read about their adventures from the comfort of your armchair, Gin, Cake & Rucksacks is a hugely entertaining read - even if you're not a gin nut!
A terrific read, right from the off. Two people meeting for the first time, then going off an a 12-day tour, both writing their daily reports as each chapter really shouldn't work this well, but it really does. Being a Lakeland walker who has never tried Gin, I did wonder before starting if parts of it would just be lost on me, but it had all the elements I really like in good, modern walking books - Good humour, just enough route detail to install ideas, and all the relatable detail of a good wander with it's changeable weather, tumbles, bait-stops, chance meetings, minor disagreements, rucksack challenges, damp clothes etc - All the things that can put you right in the story yourself and leave you with some places to definitely visit and routes to try out. Loved it.
Loved this book, partly because I love the Lakes and gin! I know most of the route they walked, so was good to go along with them. Enjoyed reading both ladies version of the same day
