He shattered her world. Can she trust him with her heart?
Giant spiders, walking trees, bloodthirsty vines. For Jeneva, it's just another day trying to survive in the jungles of Ankau. Until the sky ripped open, and the true monsters came through. Now her world is under attack, and the only place of safety may be at the side of a rock-hard scaled alien. But he's filled with secrets - how can she trust him?
Vrehx cares for nothing other than the destruction of the Xathi hordes who burned his home and killed his family. But when a weapons test goes horribly wrong, the battle spills over to an uncharted world. The planet is filled with lethal native life...but nothing is more dangerous than the human woman who obsesses his thoughts.
When war rages around them, can they fight together, or will his burning need for her drive them apart?
Vrehx is the first book in the science fiction romance series Conquered World. Each book is a stand-alone romance with alpha male alien warriors and women who don't put up with their nonsense. No cheating, no cliffhangers, HEA guaranteed!
It was a 4 * until 75% in when Jeneva suddenly flipped And what's with these heroines who need to save everyone? She didn't give a crap about anyone but her sister at the beginning of the book and then halfway through she's all "hey I'm your friendly neighbourhood stranger, you're in danger come with me" and of course they don't. So it's all her fault. Please. I think I'm ranting as this started off so good, interesting premise and interesting characters and then that bad ending :(
I had high expectations for this book, strange new world, aliens on the offensive, humans woman, solitary (alien) guys… Generations ago, a colony ship from earth landed on Ankau, even though the planned seem like the promised land, it was not, with sentient plants, giant insects and wild native life. Regardless, humans made a home of Ankau. On the other side of the galaxy, the Xanthi hordes were wreaking havoc; they travel through space killing innocents and striping worlds of their resources. To fight the Xanthi, a group of warriors formed an alliance and developed a new weapon. Plans go skew when the weapon malfunction and opened a rift in the time/space continuum, sending our guys and the Xanthi to Ankau. See? So much potential. There was no “passion” between Jeneva and Vrehx, even at the end. It feels forced, the book missed flow, is like the book has this vast pieces of information that you suppose to know, assume? As for the ending, let’s not talk about the abrupt end; one moment they are fighting for their life and the next they are on the ship getting giddy with it. No idea what happened, how did they get out? What happened with the city? With Tobias? With the weapons? So many questions. I will get the next book to see if there any answer to my questions because even though the main characters are together (kind off), this feels like a cliffhanger.
=====SPOILER-ISH====== I have read the entire a series and I liked it. I also labeled it a kitchen sink series. It has a bit of every common theme in sci-fi books. I am pretty amazed anyone could combine so many themes. We have hive minded ant enemy aliens, mind control, people eating fauna, poison gases, plague, fights, racism, inventive weapon creation, ancient civilizations, new colonization...and who knows what else.
The characters were a bit extreme in their decisions and behaviour, it was either black or white, nothing in the middle. But it didn’t affect the enjoyment at large.
For the good ground work and world building the author showed in the main part of this first book, the end didn’t show it and was very abrupt. I am disappointed. I had to deduct a star for that. To be honest I should deduct two stars, but I am still biased by the good beginning and the two main characters I very much liked. The end was rushed and loveless, and left the whole romance open and unsatisfied.
The transition from one plot thread to the next were also a bit bumpy at times. There was no smooth connection.
I am not interested in the next instalment. The new main character was not favourably portrait in this book. All I remember about her, is that her fear almost prevented that her sister got the treatment she needed to survive and that she has an annoying voice constantly getting on everyone’s nerves with her attitude. I don’t know if it is me, but why should I be interested in such a personalIty?!
Full Disclosure - I did NOT finish this book. I tried for 2 days. I read the first few chapters and it bored me to sleep. I tried again later the same day without being able to become interested. The second day I skipped ahead several chapters, thinking I might get interested and know I'd have something to look forward to....nope. So, since this book can't hold my interest at all, I gave up.
I had hoped it would be good but I have to say Janeeva irritated the mess out if me yeah I get it she's a sassy heroine that don't take no crap from anyone but she would get ticked at Vhrex for no good reason! Like she was super ticked when she found out they were the cause of the rift bringing the bad aliens to her world but good Lord after hearing his explanation it should have been obvious it was an accident and she calls him really nasty names starts doubting if he's trustworthy and I'm like really this is ridiculous so to say the least it was a good story but the heroine killed it for me
Poor, poor alien males. They think they've had it tough fighting the war against the Cathie. Well, they sure couldn't predict what they were in for when their super weapon caused a space/time rift and now they're trapped on a planet where the flora and fauna are trying to kill them and the human women could take em' or leave em'. They have a lot to learn about us and them.
Sci-fi paranormal with space rifts and intergalactic war, this book has plenty of action. The interactions between the lead characters were great fun. Looking forward to the next book in this adventure.
I didn’t finish the book. I found it to be unpolished with a lot of inconsistencies and bad transitions. I feel the author could really benefit from an alpha and beta reader
Told from dual POV. Interesting story line. Great characters. Though the second book didn't appeal to me as much, mostly because of who the main female character acted in this book as a secondary character. Her attitude was a huge turn off for me to want to continue reading the series.
Jeneva heard two women screaming at each other. Because the dangerous foliage on the planet responded to noise, their shouting was not a good idea. She approached them and suggested they stop the argument, but they smugly replied that they carried a “howler”, a device beyond human hearing that would allegedly ward off any nasty things. Jeneva assured them that if the creatures could hear the howler, the women were indeed screwed. Instead of remaining silent, they started in again about whether the warning was true and how they would know. So Jeneva just walked away and left them to their fate.
Suddenly a horrible ear-splitting screech sounded, driving Jeneva to her knees. When she could get up again, she hurried back to the women to demand what they had done. But they were staring at the sky in terror as a jagged scar was torn across the blue sky and the entire forest erupted in chaos! One of the trees stepped forward, a lethal spider creature disappeared and reappeared close enough now to attack. The woman screamed and were useless in the fight. Jeneva shoved one out of the way of an attack, but didn’t clear herself fast enough and was injured. Surprisingly, as she prepared to fight with the spider again, a non-killing tree came forward and fell over on the spider to kill it. She would have to take them to shelter in a cave before the other two spiders, members of the pack of three, sought them out to kill them.
Back in space, part of the Xathi ship that had already slipped inside the rip was coming apart and disintegrating. Some of the Xathi crew were floating in space and then were shredded by the force of the rip that the Vengeance was quickly moving toward. No one knew what was happening. Sound ceased, horrible visual scenes happened around them, then sound suddenly returned. It was impossible to function or understand what was happening until they realized the Vengeance was crashing on an uncharged planet below them. The Xathi were also crashing and no one knew if their ship would be destroyed.
As Vrehx and his crew members tried to explore their crash site, one thing after another came at them! Beautiful deer surrounded them – and they saw the silver spikes protruding from their hooves as they suddenly attacked. Even a simple vine released creatures that spit acid at them. As they finally came into a clearing, they heard a strange howling noise. As they moved forward, they saw three women at the mouth of a cave and someone fired at them as if in warning. Would they retaliate and kill the women they assumed were just like the rest of the creatures on this planet? Or would they be able to communicate and perhaps even work together to survive?
For some reason, the characters in this book were not managed as well as I could have hoped. The female characters were downright annoying because they should have been strong and capable with the experience of living on this deadly planet. Yet they were acting out and whiny at times to the point I wanted to skip over that section of the book. However, the action and world-building was really good. I felt drawn into the story line and dragged along, kicking and screaming and afraid to look over my shoulder sometimes! The constant action and suspense won me over and I will definitely read the next book in this series.
I had some issues with the book that kept piling up until i had to put it down. -we find out Vrehx is a berserker of some kind. We've never had any info or mentions of berserkers before or after this moment. -Jeneva's character traits keep changing. When we first meet her, she's a lone hunter type who knows how to fight and survive. But as soon as the group of friendly aliens travels with her she loses all her caution and panics to go find her sister, who we also didn't have any mention of before. At first she is fierce and brave enough to make demands of the alien's she's never met before, only to turn quite passive and mope-y as soon as her sister is safe. This felt less like a character arc for me, and more like her personality traits changed depending on what the author needed of her. -i couldn't help but cringe at the empath stuff. I think it's the wording? If it were just called psychic ability I'd be fine i think. -Jeneva handles a computer system she's never seen before flawlessly. She's able to control sensors to find some deus-ex-material the aliens need. She does that twice, successfully, in a row, without needing or having received any security clearance and training. That felt far too easy for me. -next up male lead sees her with her jacket off for the first time and the insta-love he'd been feeling turns to insta-hard-on. I couldn't anymore and put the book down.
Sadly, because i stopped reading, the book didn't manage to make me give a shit about the world and the characters, let alone the male and female leads for the next few books. I don't think i will be continuing this series, which is a shame because it's quite long and I'd been looking forward to reading that much.

Vrehx and his crew of warriors from a mixture of races, have all been victims of the Xathi, a hive minded, bug-like race of aliens. Each of the crew saw his world destroyed, and are now part of a mission on board the ship Vengeance, to deploy a new weapon.
Only, the weapon creates a huge rift in space, sending the Xathi, and the Vengeance, crashing onto a human colonized planet.
Vrehx and the others on the Vengeance are determined to eliminate the Xathi threat they accidentally released.
Jenever is a human who makes her living collecting things from the woods, when she runs into Vrehx and the others. She’s the first person on the planet to speak with them, and learn to trust them. And with her help, they might just be able to stop the Xathi...
This is the first in a series of books featuring the crew of the Vengeance, and their enemy, the Xathi. We are dropped into the middle of an ongoing war, and it appears to be an almost hopeless cause. They’ve not mapped this part of the galaxy, and as far as I can tell, they haven’t run across humans before, either, so there is little chance that they will be able to leave easily. The romance in the book is actually only a small part of the story. Although the two main characters get a ‘happily for now’, there was no real conclusion for them, because the overarching background plot is a huge part of the story. That means, this book is best read as part of the series, and if not binge-reading, at least read together on a continuous streak!
Recommended primarily for sci-fi fans, and sci-fi romance fans.
I have listened to Elin Wyn with another series and was really impressed with her writing style. So this series was a wonderful find. This story was fast paced with action and angst from the get-go. Being the first book the plotline was world building and I got to know each of the alien species, their names, and the planet the fight was on. Although there wasn't any depth in the unfolding of the finer details and was skimmed over lightly, Elin concentrated mainly on the meatier side of the story. It was a quick introduction and the attraction between the H and h was fairly quick and then I was rolled up with steam and romance. I wanted to shake Vhrex for his mysoginistic intent but I loved the h as she was kickass and sassy. There were a few suprises along the way and the problem presented was solved with a nice twist, giving the humans the ace up the sleeve. I so laughed at the dry humour from our main characters and especially the side characters. All in all the weird planet, vegetation and the chaos kept me listening. Ideas and quick thinking kept the pace exciting. Although it moved fast the web of ideas and plot meshed nicely and didn't leave a loose end. The storyline rounded off in the end but of course leaves it open for book 2. Great writing and a good story, looking forward to book 2. The narrator is a first for me. Piers had a British accent and he used other accents to keep the differentiation between characters So if you don't mind aliens, action, quick romance, a bit of steam and some dry humour with a mixture of fun and serious characteristics. Then this is for you. And for me
The crew of the vengeance has one mission, test a prototype weapon to see if it’s viable against their hated enemy, a hive mind known as the Xathi. But the test goes wrong, sending the vengeance and part of a Xathi ship through a tear in space To a death world that has been colonized by the humans.
Their Vrehx, one of the commanders of the vengeance, runs into Jeneva a human just trying to survive on a world where the trees hunt you and the spiders are pissed off. Their worlds collide, literally, as do their hearts, metaphorically.
— I can definitely get behind this series that follows essentially a stranded ship of soldiers onto a planet that the humans have colonized where they’re fighting against another alien race who is bent on destruction and death. The characters are fairly interesting. The aliens are alien enough for the xenophiles but not so alien that they become too weird.
The over arcing plot is very sci-fi. Much in the vein of starship troopers meets Anne McCaffrey’s spacefaring series specifically the Rowan and Damia. It’s pretty clear that the rest of the series is going to be matching up the crew members of the vengeance with various human females while battling the Xathi.
The one thing I didn’t love was that in the beginning especially when there were too many earth idioms used by Vrehx and his crew. So I’m dropping it a half a star for that.
Ultimately this was fairly fun and a good start to the series.

This is another well written Adult Space🚀 Opera Adventure and XXX Alpha Alien Romance💘!
Vrehx and his fellow shipmates were on a probable suicide mission trying to destroy the hive mother ship. They have a new experimental weapon that might work to destroy the enemy who destroyed their planets and killed their families. The weapon could also kill them is the enemy doesn't while they are trying to get close enough to fire. The weapon works and a rip is torn in space dragging both ships through. They crash on an unknown planet. On a scouting trip, they learn that the planet is very dangerous with even the planets trying to kill them. Then they run across three intelligent alien women who might help them survive. Jeneva is a human woman who has lived out in the dangerous wilderness alone for a long time. She makes her living harvesting the sap of dangerous plants and other things. One day she runs across two sisters foolishly yelling in the forest. She tries to warn them but then they are attacked and one of the sisters is badly injured. Later they run into a group of aliens who help them heal the sister and force them to go with them to their ship. Jeneva is annoyed but is drawn to Vrehx. Together Vrehx and Jeneva have to save her planet from the alien enemy, save captured humans, get the materials need to fix Vrehx's ship and fall in love. This book has great world building and I loved both Vrehx and Jeneva. There is a lot of action and plot twists.

No lie, guys, this book was EXACTLY what I was in the mood for when I picked it up. A dangerous world that just seems to get more dangerous the longer you're in it. SUPER terrible bad guys who know nothing beyond the desire to conquer and destroy. A group of (mostly) good aliens who accidentally brought this awful plague of hive-aliens to this planet and now have to figure out how to contain them. A tough-as-nails heroine who butts heads with a (sometimes) overbearing hero. Danger! Chaos! Berserker rages!
Yesssssssss.
This book is absolutely up my alley. Jeneva and Vrehx snarl and growl at each other enough to make me grin. Jeneva doesn't have time for idiots and Vrehx's main mission is stopping the Xathi before they have to chance to annihilate another planet/people. He's single-minded and focused and Jeneva throws him all out of whack. In THE BEST way.
As for Jeneva, Vrehx's appearance on her planet it a shock, but he does bring her answers to questions she didn't know she needed to ask. She's smart enough to realize the aliens on Vrehx's ship might not know the dangers of her planet, but they're her people's only hope for survival against the Xathi horde.
A whole lot of danger (both from the planet and the invading aliens), plenty of lingering looks, a few bloody battles, and the set-up for what looks like it's going to be an epic series. I am so in.
Vrehx is a a Skotan warrior, a survivor of the Xathi massacre of his planet, and a man on a mission. He and allied aliens from similarly scourged planets are united to fight the Xathi - with a newly-developed super-weapon. It's a suicide mission they're on, and so when Vrehx hits the button and the universe blows up... Nothing is as expected. When he survives the self-administered apocalypse, it is to find himself, his crew, and the Xathi all trapped in a new universe, on a planet full of sentient and carnivores plants, giant spiders, and Jeneva. He's worried about protecting her from the wildlife and the Xathi. She's gonna school him in the futility of protective alpha mode when you're in over your head on a strange planet, IF he survives his first days on the planet. And in return, he's gonna give her two priceless gifts: peace of mind, and love. Five stars for outstanding characterization - Gad, these people feel so REAL it's like you're there with them! Five stars for what promises to be some fine and detailed world- building, as bizarre flora and fauna alternate with bits of human colonial history to create the scene for the books to come. Vrehx is on board a space ship with many other species attacking the hive minded Xathi. In deploying a new weapon somehow a rift between time and space was created and their ship as well as the Xathi ship were pulled through to another planet where humans live. The Xathi ship falls onto one of the larger cities while Vrehx;s ship tries to avoid cities and crashes into a forest. On going to expldadaore they come across three human women who they take back to their ship. Jeneva is given a translation device which allows her to communicate with the aliens. When she learns what is happening she wants to head to the town her sister lives in. When they arrive they discover the humans taken captive by the Xathi and after a battle rescue them. They;re taken back to the ship. There Vrehx discovers that Jeneva is an empath and tries to help her learn how to shield her mind. When she accesses his, he feels a warmth that is unusual and something that he has never felt before. Now he has to help find a way to rid this planet of the Xathi, find out what Jeneva means to him and survive the rift. Action, adventure, moments of dark humour. This story will pull you in and keep you riveted till the last page.

Jeneva is a human living in the jungles of Ankau with an assortment of giant spiders and walking trees although blissfully alone until the sky is ripped open and monsters came through. Now her world is under attack from one set of monsters where the only safe place for her is at the side of another monster called Vrehx. He has a lot of secrets and so although he seems very safe, she is not sure if she can totally trust him. Vrehx for so many years has lived for nothing other than the destruction of the Xathi hordes who burned his home and killed his family. So when a weapons test goes disastrously wrong and the battle spills onto an uncharted world with lethal native life he finds nothing more dangerous to him than the human woman who obsesses his own thoughts. When war rages around them, can they fight together, or will his burning need for her drive them apart?
I loved the start of this story and it all looked great until it suddenly changed tack and Jeneva became this woman determined to save humanity. I've struggled to understand that as she seemed to have hidden from it for so long and nothing had happened to deserve that level of devotion. I did however love the way that the relationship between Vrehx and Jeneva developed through the tales of his family and their use of empathy which seemed to be so intimate. Easy to read and understand. Contains some sexual content.
How does Elin Wyn do it!!?? This author with her brilliant imagination has created another fantastic series for us. I was first iintroduced to this author through her Star breed series of books and instantly fell in love with her work even though i wasnt a sci-fi fan. Her storytelling ability pulls you right into the story and you actually feel as you are in the book its self.
The author has created a world that not only are the animals and insects deadly but the flora and fauna is too. The characters are strong and colourful and when i say colourful i mean colourful. In the first book we are introduced to an aray of characters but Jeneva and Vrehx are the main characters in this book. Jeneva has looked out for herself for years and now this handsome alien shows up on her planet through a rip in space and is all overprotective of her. Even though they are from different worlds the attraction between the two is undeniable. Will they be able to put aside their differences and be able to trust each other and work together to fight against their enemies ? This is an action packed read filled with drama, suspence and romance.
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book.
Amazing and unique story about an alien and a human
Vrehx and his spaceship full of mismatch alien Warriors bent on vengeance for their shattered people on their planets. They are at war with an insect like hive called Xathi. They were trying out a new experimental weapon which created the real and their spaceship and Xathi landed on this unknown planet. They don't know which is worse the Xathi or the flora or fauna on this planet.
Fortunately, Jeneva is a hunter flora and fauna's poisons and extracts that are valuable to humans. She encountered the aliens who are the good guys along with some other humans she trying to get back to her City. They encountered the Xathi. They're all at war with the flora, fauna, and the Xathi. Will Vrehx and Jeneva survive in this hostile planet?
The characters are unique, intriguing, and exotic to make this world truly unique to the reader. It is fast paced, edge of your seat drama that keep the reader interested and wanting more. I certainly did.
I received an ARC edition of this book from the author.
I thought this was an interesting introduction to a new world. I liked the world-building, enough to give me a good feel for the world but still plenty to discover in the future books. I liked Vrehx and Jeneva. Even with the attraction between them, there are a lot of obstacles with them coming from different worlds and learning to trust each other. Jeneva is certainly no push-over, she's used to taking care of herself. It was interesting to see Vrehx's interaction with the men under his command, there was just enough to make them distinct characters without them dominating the story. It will be interesting to see more about them in future books.
Although there is an ending for this initial story, there is clearly a lot more that will need to be told to resolve everything. I'm looking forward to seeing more of this strange world and the interaction between the humans and the crew of the Vengeance.
