For the sake of a family legacy, he must strike a marriage bargain.
With six months to live, Charleston heir Jonathan Tarleton must secure his family’s business—with a contract marriage. He convinces his beautiful, dedicated assistant, Lisette Stanhope, to be his bride, telling himself the proposal has nothing to do with his raw need to make Lisette his . Then their commitment is put to the ultimate test…
Janice Maynard came to the writing life early! When her third grade short story, “The Princess and the Robbers”, won a red ribbon in a school arts fair, Janice was hooked. She followed up that early success with a more commercial piece in the sixth grade… “Why My Mom Loves To Drink Coke”. No advance for that one, but she won a six-pack of Coke… remember those great little bottles?
In junior high Janice began circulating her work to a wider audience. A dozen or so notebook pages stapled together made the rounds in some particularly boring classes, with the riveting tales carefully hidden behind textbooks.
High school meant the big time… editor of the school newspaper, the Maroon and White. Janice used her insightful editorials to delve into such meaty subjects as “locker room odor” and “why we need two-ply tissue in the student bathrooms”.
College brought lots of writing, but very little of it creative… four years later, Janice stepped into the adult world as a fully certified elementary teacher.
Despite motherhood, full-time employment, and keeping up with an “always into something” husband, Janice never lost her love of writing or the desire to be published. In 1996 she realized her long-time dream when Kensington Publishing bought her first book, Sweetheart. That exciting moment was followed by the sales of two more books in the Precious Gem line.
In the fall of 2002, Janice left the classroom to pursue writing full-time.
Right off the bat, I was wondering how she was going to pull off a HEA with the Alpha only having 6 months to live. I should have known that Janice could pull it off however.
We first met Jonathan in the first Southern Secrets book Blame in on Christmas and I have been looking forward to reading his story. Jonathan is the head of the family empire taking over after his father's illness forced him out of the company. Being estranged from his twin brother Hartley has put all the responsibility of family and the business on his shoulders. When he starts to have massive headaches he seeks medical treatment to be told he has cancer and has 6 months to live. Needing to keep the vultures at bay from his company he needs help and who better to turn to then his assistant Lisette that has been with him for six years.
Lisette is ready to start her life. After losing her mother and having spent the better part of her thirties working for the one man that she can never have. She is ready to move on and start a family before mother nature says its too late. Little does she know that Jonathan is about to ask her once again to put her life on hold and marry him to save his company. She knows she should say no. The pull however is just too much for her too.
This story had me on edge till the very end. I was just waiting for it to cliff hang or some soap opera type twist to sum it all up. No spoilers here so you will just have to read it for you self. You won't be disappointed.
Can't wait for the final book in this series and find out Hartley's story.
“A Contract Seduction” is book two of Janice Maynard’s Southern Secrets series and is the story of Jonathan Tarleton and Lisette Stanhope.
In book one (“Blame it on Christmas”), we heard about Jonathan’s headaches and, in this book, we learn the reason behind them. Jonathan needs Lisette to protect his family’s company, Tarleton Shipping, after he is gone. Lisette, who’s been his assistant for years, is also in love with him. She puts her own plans on hold to cater to Jonathan, something she did when she cared for her mother. Their marriage of convenience is supposed to be about business until their hearts become entangled and Lisette wants more than they agreed to.
A hero on his death bed is definitely intriguing with wondering how the story will play out (it is a romance with the expected HEA after all), but for some reason I was disappointed with the final explanation. It just seemed too cliched for me, though I do realize how else could it have been explained? There were also a few scenes with Lisette where I felt her behavior was inconsistent and she acted out of character—during their honeymoon and more so near the end.
Overall, the writing is intelligent and descriptive, and it pains me to say this, but “A Contract Seduction” isn’t one of my favorite books by Ms. Maynard.

I was more than happy to read this in exchange for my honest review. With that said , I was quite excited to read Johnathans story to find out about his headaches in the first book in series ! This was a quick fast paced read for me because it begins with his shocking terminal diagnosis. Naturally I’m curious to learn how this will actually still end with our HEA WE expect ! I have to share that I really really did enjoy this book because of the medical issue . The marriage to Lisette will Apparently make things look better once Johnathans Fate is sealed . With all things considered that would naturally occur with a rushed marriage & romance of a wealthy man ALONG with today’s HIPA laws & privacy .... I think Janice did an amazing job of squeezing all the particulars into this book with 200+ pages only!! I felt overwhelming sadness and compassion for all parties involved throughout the story . I simply loved the picture she painted involving their honeymoon & the passion was plenty believable for me between employer /employee ❤️. The actual final change / discrepancy in diagnosis had to be addressed & was believable for me personally. I’m SO happy with their final HEA . Well done.
Emotion tugging goodness! With the next book in her Southern Secrets series, Janice Maynard takes us back into the heart of Charleston's elite when the Tarleton heir receives a shocking diagnosis. I was hooked from page one, and devoured it until the end. Great characters, heart-wrenching emotions and a really interesting story line. Looking forward to the next Tarleton's story!
Businessman Jonathan Tarleton never expected to hear the news that he has literally a few months to live. He's thrust into the mindset of disbelief along with concern for the future of his family business. His father is ailing, his brother has disgraced the family and his sister is basking in bliss ... so who is going to run the company when he's gone?
Lisette Stanhope has been his assistant for a few years now and been with the company for even longer, so she knows the day in and day out of the business quite well. When Jonathan breaks the news to her and asks for her help, she's reluctant to let him down. She's had a crush on him for years now, and hearing that he only has a short amount of time left makes her reach out with both hands to have whatever part of him she can have for whatever time is left ... even if it means she has to become his wife!
When I started reading Janice Maynard’s latest book, A Contract Seduction the Tim McCraw song Live Like You Were Dying kept running through my mind. It was difficult for me to see how a HEA would be coming, which is a requirement of romance stories. However, I knew if anyone could pull it off, Janice Maynard would.
A marriage of convenience story involving a CEO and his professional assistant. I did not find it at all odd that Lisette is the one that Jonathan turned too with shocking news along with a plan to insure the company. These two dedicated people made a great team so it seemed natural for them to belong together. When all seems to be settled a bombshell is dropped. I must say it was much more involved than I had imagined as I read up to that point. The words “criminal negligence” are used but that does not solve all of this couple’s problems. In fact, it suddenly makes more somehow.
Entertaining and interesting, the cover does not do the book justice. There is much more conflict than the cover indicates. It is the drama and conflict that makes this such an intriguing read.
An ARC of the book was given to me by the publisher or author which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A Contract Seduction is the second book in Janice Maynard’s Southern Secrets series. What a way to open a story! This book got me from the opening line, and I couldn’t put it down until I completed it.
Jonathan Tarleton is given a devastating diagnosis and his first thoughts is how to save his family legacy. He reached out to his assistant Lisette who after much consideration agrees to a contract marriage.
I enjoyed watching Jonathan come to grips not only with his diagnosis but also his feelings for Lisette. After a health scare while on their honeymoon, they return home and discover all is not what he believed. Will Jonathan survive his health scare? Will Lisette confess and share a secret she’s kept from Jonathan?
I highly recommend reading A Contract Seduction. It is a standalone story but I suggest reading the first book in the series because it’s a good read as well. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily chose to read and review it. This is my honest opinion.
Wow, I’m flabbergasted! What a great book this was. I began reading this morning and I couldn’t put it down until I finished it. I loved the characters, their development in the characters of Jonathan and Lizzy, their journey from fake marriage in the doom of death towards a Happily ever after. I had my hopes up that Jonathan could be saved, but I had no clue how Ms Maynard would do it. I have one tiny subjection and that was that their HEA came about a bit suddenly, I would have loved an epilogue in this book, but maybe that’s the next book in this series. This is the short synopsis of the book: For the sake of a family legacy, he must strike a marriage bargain. With six months to live, Charleston heir Jonathan Tarleton must secure his family's business -- with a contract marriage. He convinces his beautiful, dedicated assistant, Lisette Stanhope, to be his bride, telling himself the proposal has nothing to do with his raw need to make Lisette his. Then their commitment is put to the ultimate test…
A Contract Seduction is a great book that finds itself perfectly placed as part of the series Southern Secrets series. Once I started reading the story of Jonathan Tarleton and Lisette Stanhope, I could not put it down! Janice Maynard makes it so easy to loose oneself between the pages of this book, from starting the story to finding out how it all eventually works out.
Lisette is having her own issues, but when she learns that Jonathan only has six months to live, she does not take long to decide that no matter what it may cost her she'll help him. However, she may have her own request in return.
Will Jonathan give Lisette to make things work? Will these two get through the six months together, or will they completely fall apart? How far will Jonathan go to make sure his family company lives on after he is gone? What will this cost Lisette? Is there a true love ending for this couple??
Poignant emotional journey that makes you laugh, cry, and pray. A shipping company boss Jonathan Tarleton and his assistant Lisette Stanhope who have controlled their feelings for one due to propriety. Calamity brings them closer together through a ‘desperate times call for desperate measures’ unorthodox plan. Is a marriage of convenience the answer? Can she love for the time he has left and save the family business? Lisette believes “When you loved someone, you gave whatever the situation demanded in order to make that person a priority.” She had planned to leave due to unrequited love; he’s deflated thinking she married him out of pity, not love. If tragedy is the tie that binds, what remains when there’s no threat? Will love, passion, desire keep them together?
I’m all about a marriage of convenience romances. I’m also all about pregnancy romances. But a pregnancy romance coupled with a marriage of convenience topped with a terminal illness diagnosis...woah baby, this was an emotional ride.
Good thing I loved Lisette and Jonathan together from the get-go!
In the first book of this series, Blame It On Christmas, Jonathan came off a bit standoffish and “uppity”. Not so in this book AT ALL. He was warm and kind with Lisette once his walls were stripped down. Their honeymoon in Antigua, each and every piece of it, was divine.
Sexier than most of Maynard’s other books but with just as much heart, this is one I plan to savor again and again.
A Contract Seduction by Janice Maynard was an interesting read. I enjoyed the story between Jonathan and Lisette. Jonathan is faceing the last few days of his life and ask his assisstant to become his wife out of desperation of everyone knowing he may be dieing and his world crumbling around him. Lisette is having a hard time continueing to work for Jonathan is turning in her notice until she hears how much he needs her. I enjoyed the characters but for me this book screamed desperation. I would love to have seen the two come together without being forced together under the circumstances.
4.5 stars. I think an epilogue would’ve made this a 5 star read. I gotta say, I’m pleasantly surprised with how good this book was. I wasn’t expecting so much drama and angst in a 200 page book. Lisette and Jonathon might be my new favorite couple. I love the scene she orchestrated in the last chapter, it’s such a bad b moment. It was so smart and they both got exactly what they wanted. This’ll definitely be a reread for me.
Jonathan has six months to live. First thing is to find someone, who he can trust to make decisions for him and sign documents related to his company. Lisette is ready for change, she is going to give her notice to Jonathan, so he can find himself new personal assistant. But all of this is forgotten when Jonathan asks her for help. Loved the story and characters.
This book was pretty good but I had a hard time getting into it like the other book I read in this series. I normally like books like this one but I don’t know this one just didn’t grab my attention like I had hoped it would. A little disappointing, but I guess it’s ok.
I was concerned and hooked at the same time when I started reading the book - another can't put it down to the end - no spoilers from me after reading my paperback!
A Contract Seduction is the second book in the Southern Secrets series. It was not the best story! This is Jonathan Tarleton’s story, Jonathan discovers that he has an inoperable brain tumor and in order to make sure that the company that has been in his family for, generations is secure he decides he must marry. His long time assistant Lisette Stanhope is just about to resign because she has feeling for Jonathan and he hasn’t shown any when he tells her his predicament. At first she is just going to be his backup but as time goes on he decides that marriage is the answer! They sign a prenup and begin a on paper married life. She then throws in wanting a baby and with that and a shock no spoiler here announcement things get dicey and interesting. Stick with it! .
Assistant in love with her boss. Boss not willing to admit he has feelings for his assistant. Terminal illness diagnosis leads to a marriage of convenience.
An amazing story of how Lisette and Jonathan deal with everything that is thrown at them. Love really has a way of making you see things in a whole new light.
Again, thanks, Janice, you're reminding me of what I once liked about HQ DESIRES.
This is an Unrequited Love with Personal Assistant/Secretary and a CEO Boss. We saw this male MC, Jonathon, in the previous book as "brother to female MC" and "best friend of male MC". He was weaving in and out of their romance in Book 1, and he was also having really terrible bouts with "cluster headaches" he couldn't seem to get rid of. He is part of a set of twins, but has had a falling out with his brother and refuses to talk about why.
Although, since we had POV chapters with him, we had learned that somehow in some manner his twin brother had stolen some money from the family business...allegedly. When we saw Jonathon last in book 1, he was going into a rehab facility that was holistic and all about meditations to curb these intense headaches and when we open in this story, Book 2, we learn he has gotten fresh news he has an inoperable brain tumor and needs to get his life in order.
Our female MC, Lisette, as the long-suffering Assistant to her Boss, has come over to his personal office at his home and is about to give him a Letter of Resignation. Of course, once she hears of her Boss's medical situation, she no longer wants to resign. He needs someone he can trust to be there to take his place - he was given at best 6months to a year to live.
But soon, he devises a better plan...a foolproof one that no one can dispute. He will now offer marriage to his long-suffering Assistant. This was an old school great read since our MCs were both seemingly fighting attraction they'd been feeling since forever, but they didn't rush to sex until their wedding night/honeymoon.
What's fascinating is I do believe we may have seen our female MC, Lisette, in Book 1 and I had this inkling she was way-older than Jonathan, our male MC...hehe, turns out she's 37yrs old to his 32yrs old...hmm, this was an interesting and compelling read.
Although there was some unneeded drama that came back up...oh, yeah, HE FOUND HER LETTER OF RESIGNATION, then she did the awful thing of daring to answer her own cell phone when the twin brother called...ugh, some messy forced drama that was obvi but they had a nice, sweet HEA with some small groveling since HE was a BIG A-hole to her.
A Contract Seduction is the second installment in Janice Maynard's Southern Secrets series. Charleston heir Jonathan Tarleton has been given six months to live. He has to figure out how to protect his family and their shipping empire. He decides that his trusty assistant, Lisette Stanhope, is exactly who he needs to help him. Jonathan presents Lisette with a marriage of convenience to make the transfer of company decision making easier. Lisette has been in love with Jonathan for years and she's not sure if she can handle what he is asking of her. Jonathan and Lisette are battling their own personal "demons", but can they still have their happily ever after? This book grabbed my attention immediately and I read it in a few hours. I couldn't put it down! I did receive an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
