Joyce Dunbar is an English author of over seventy children’s books, best known for Tell Me Something Happy Before I Go To Sleep, This Is The Star, and the Mouse and Mole series. Born in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, she studied English at Goldsmiths College before teaching drama until hearing loss led her to write full time in 1989. Her first children’s book appeared when she was 35, followed by works such as Mundo and the Weather-Child, which explored the experiences of a deaf child and earned critical recognition. Her stories have been adapted for stage, television, and interactive media, with Mouse and Mole becoming a 26-part animated series. She has also been an advocate for deaf awareness, cycling across Cuba for charity. Dunbar lives in Norwich.

I hope that any new reader will enjoy reading the three short stories in ‘Hip Dip Dip with Mouse and Mole’ as much as I did.

In each of the stories Mouse and Mole have an adventure, whether it be buying a toy boat, escaping an imaginary ghost or both of them catching a chill, which entertains the reader and makes them fall in love with their characters.

In Hip Dip Dip, the highlight of the book occurs when Mouse buys Mole a toy boat. Mole is lead to believe that the boat has been sold to a mystery buyer, who to the delight of Mole and the reader turns out to be Mouse! The illustration of Mouse and Mole hugging about this revelation, is so sweet it will melt any child’s or adult’s heart. Whether Mouse and Mole are just having breakfast and eating ‘crispy buttery toast,’ or playing by the pond, they come across as happy little creatures which live in a dream world , which we would all like to be part of. I would highly recommend this book to children just starting to read up to age 6 as it is a simple and fun read, with interesting vocabulary.
