I’m not a good writer of reviews but I wanna give this book some love.

It’s a fun park ride for the brain. I was gonna say a rollercoaster, but rollercoasters only go in one direction at a time. Manacles takes most directions and a lot of shapes, often simultaneously. Experimental but somehow cohesive. Not sure whether the book is actually cohesive, or it’s just the survival-instinct of the mind that knits together from fear of chaos. Shrugging emoji.

Manacles has been great to read in this, my year of reading.

This is a review of a hard copy I found on eBay, printed in 1985. The author has links to a PDF for download. It’s ©️2020. I downloaded the PDF and tried to find my place in it to read on toilet breaks at work. It seems to be a different beast with different “chapter” names, so to prevent (further) confusion I decided I’d give the PDF a go separately some time.

I nearly forgot to mention, it’s also really funny.
