One of my goals this year is to start reading more middle grade novels again, and there's nothing I love more than the darker side of MG fiction. This was truly an engaging, age appropriate horror novel for the younger crowd, yet the author didn't skimp on details or dumb down the narrative. The individual mystery here is wrapped up nicely, but the characters are left open for a new adventure to come. Highly recommended to fans of the Hello Neighbor book series.

**4.5-stars rounded up**

The Stitchers is the 1st-installment to Lorien Lawrence's Spooky Middle Grade trilogy, Fright Watch. I have owed this book for close to 5-years, and am now kicking myself for waiting this long to pick it up.

I absolutely adored this story. Lawrence was able to pull me in and get me completely invested from the very beginning. I loved the MC, Quinn, and her friend/neighbor, Mike.

They made quite the dynamic duo.

Quinn and Mike both live on Goodie Lane. They're both on the school track team and most days, go running together early in the mornings before school.

On these early morning runs, they frequently observe odd and slightly disturbing behavior from their neighbors; all elderly folks, they've dubbed The Oldies, who've lived on the street for as long as anyone can remember.

This behavior isn't really anything new, as Quinn's Dad, who fairly recently passed away, was a police officer and even he found their neighbors suspicious.

Why don't they ever seem to age?

After her father passes, Quinn becomes even more focused on getting to the bottom of whatever is going on with the The Oldies. Mike seems like the perfect Robin to her Batman, and he's more than willing to help out.

The neighbors seem to be on to them though, aware of the kids digging around. Are Quinn and Mike in real danger, or are they just letting their imaginations get away from them?

As things start to heat up on Goodie Lane, their situation escalates quickly. Quinn and Mike desperately search for answers, but will it be too little, too late?

This is such a great Middle Grade Horror novel. I loved how quickly it kicks off and how likable our main characters are.

The mystery of the story is puzzling and it gets top marks for the eerie atmosphere. There were some seriously creepy moments and I loved watching all the action play out.

The Oldies, as a group, are super creepy antagonists. Some of the interactions that Quinn and Mike had with them gave me literal chills. I was fearful in those moments for the characters I had come to love.

I also really appreciated the, shall we say, Beauty Horror, included in this one. Lawrence has some serious Horror chops, don't let the Middle Grade categorization fool you. This is a good one and read under the right circumstances, it'll get under your skin.

I loved this so much that I immediately started this 2nd-book after finishing it. And that's saying something, because I'm terrible at committing to series.

I would recommend this one to any Reader who enjoys Spooky Middle Grade, but honestly, I would recommend this one to any Horror Reader in general. I definitely think this has something to offer individuals of all ages.

The middle grade spooky world is lucky to be adding this one to its ranks when it comes out in August!

Quinn lives on what seems to be a rather peaceful street - except for the fact that some of her neighbours are bizarre. There's just something not right about them, and Quinn and her friend Mike are determined to find out who - or what - they are. Does it have something to do with the drowning of a young girl fifty years before?

Thoroughly enjoyed my time reading this spooky and intriguing book, the first in the Fright Watch series. I'm rather happy that we will be seeing more of Quinn and Mike because I really liked them as main characters - they were smart and three-dimensional, with true goals and aspirations that made them feel real. I have to note that I really liked the handling of the mother-daughter relationship in this, as Quinn lost her father the year before, so grief is sometimes handled and shared in this family dynamic. Also, I loved Quinn's grandma too - she was awesome!

Setting was very creepy and there were moments that were very atmospheric and I liked the mystery regarding the Oldies. This was definitely reminiscent of R. L. Stine's Fear Street and Goosebumps series, as many people have already made the comparison, so if you're looking to fill that hole in your life, then it looks like Fright Watch by Lorien Lawrence will be the one to fill it.

A huge thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC copy. This is my totally honest review.

3 out of 5!

Loved everything with the Oldies! Wanted more of them and more mystery surrounding them!

But The Stitchers is perfect for Middle Grade since a lot of time is spent with Quinn and her friends at school.
For me personally, I just wasn't interested in the drama with Quinn's friends.

But I was definitely hooked into the story from the 50% mark and on!

Had some good body horror that I was impressed with!

Now, this one wasn't scary for me but could be for a Middle Grade reader.

All in all pretty solid story.

THE STITCHERS is not a book I had seen on my radar until it landed right in my lap. And I am thankful it did! This is the debut novel from Lorien Lawrence and is slated as the first installment in the Fright Watch series. I can confidently say I will be reading everything in this series whether its a continual series, an anthology series, or something completely different. Lawrence can tell a fun, spooky story and bring all the great elements together that make up MG horror! Lawrence also delivers Eerie, Indiana vibes if that is a show you remember from your childhood. I am always down with some of that!

If you are a fan of middle grade horror then you absolutely need this on your bookshelves! It will not disappoint and you will be eagerly awaiting more of her books just like I am - check it out!

Actual rating 4.75 but rounded up to 5 star.

The Stitchers is a Middle Grade Horror, it's eerie and fantastic!

Teenagers Quinn and Mike live in a small area, and live opposite each other on Goodie Lane. Both going to the same school and track team, they pair up and work together to uncover their town's secrets.

Ever since Quinn's Dad tragically passed away, Quinn refuses to give up the investigation that she and her Dad started.

Determined to find out the mystery surrounding their strange neighbours, that they have nicknamed "the oldies." Quinn and Mike secretly start snooping and spying.

The oldies are odd, they stick to certain routines, have no family and friends other than each other, and they never seem to age...

Will the secrets be uncovered, and will history repeat itself?

The Stitchers is full of mystery, humour and spookiness.

The book gave me Goosebumps and Scooby Doo vibes! The writing was eerie and thrilling. I would highly reccomend, especially for fans of Are You Afraid of The Dark, Hocus Pocus and Goosebumps.

I can't wait to read more in this Series.

I won a copy of the ARC through a competition on Twitter, this in no means has affected my rating or feelings. This is 101% honesty here.

This was a very exciting and fun read! It took me several days to get through it due to how little time I had when I read it (something to do with packing up a tent, going home and unpack stuff, and feeling too dead to read). But whenever I could I read this book, because I just couldn’t put it down.

I enjoyed it a lot, it gave some major Goosebumps x Eerie Indiana vibes (remember the episode with the tupperware lady?). I was already hoping for that so I am delighted! Meet the Oldies. A group of elderly people who have been living on the street for… well centuries, that is how it seems at least. People have known them for a long long time. Quinn and her dad were investigating them but then things happened to her dad and after that she just wasn’t that much into it. But now she is back again, this time with her friend (or well she thinks he is really cute and swoony) Mike. I loved seeing the two of them together and trying to figure out clues. Try to not get in the clutches of the Oldies. Along the way of their investigation they bump against dead ends, but also find out plenty of scary details that had gave me a big case of the goosebumps. Which I loved as it was hot as hell during my vacation/after my vacation and I could use some cold.

Things get spookier and spookier with each page and each newly learned fact. The Oldies are also going in the offence as they notice that Quinn is discovering things. Things they don’t want to come out. Seeing all the Oldies together was just a big NOPE, especially when they went chanting. Though I have to say seeing Mr. Brown rush past with his fancy legs was also something of a no thank you. He reminded me of a spider, waiting, waiting, and then pounce and run.

I love how Quinn was a runner and how she trained daily (though I am guessing running away from creepy old men wasn’t on the itinerary 😛 ). I loved seeing the meets, happy that those were added.

I do hope that Quinn’s mom picks up things, makes more meals for her kid, tries to be there a bit more. I get that she has to work, but your kid needs a healthy and happy home as well. But we do see that the mom tries. Makes up the days she cannot be there. Surprises her daughter when she has a day off. Again, I can imagine it is not easy being the only parent and having to make sure to keep a roof over your head, but your kid also needs you.

The only thing or character I should say I wasn’t a fan of was Mike. I didn’t like how he acted (like how he went from hot to cold to hot) and I wasn’t too big of a fan on his excuses and how he brought Quinn further into problems with everyone she cares about. I get that he wants to solve the case, Quinn wants that too, but Quinn also has other friends who she wants to be with. Just let her have a bit of fun at times. It is not a job. No need to act the way you did. Thanks.

All in all, this was an AMAZING read and one I could definitely not stop reading. I would highly recommend this one to everyone in need for a spooky read. This one will be great to read during Halloween. I cannot wait for the next book in this series, I hope it will just be as awesome.

If you enjoy:
- Goosebumps & Nancy Drew

This started off as a slow burn read with a bit of repetitiveness. But the author does a nice job of leaving a trail of crumbs to keep the reader engaged.

Things don't really start picking up till the halfway mark, and I was curious to find out more about the Oldies, which was what kept me going in the first place. Otherwise, I'm not sure I would have continued to be honest.

Overall, it wasn't a bad read. It sets up the next book nicely, and is a good read for a younger audience.

Quinn has been watching her elderly neighbours with her friend over the road, Mike. Her dad was a cop, he called the Oldies and had been investigating them for years. Something is weird about them and she is determined to find out what that is! But, it is dangerous to ask too many questions of the town’s main sponsors, after all anyone who has doesn’t live long.

A fantastic middle grade horror that has some really chilling moments and fabulous characters you immediately love or loathe. It also explores in a very age appropriate way, the grief of losing a parent, the love of family and the support of friends. The oldies are creepy led by the flawless Bea whose face is smooth like a doll and whose all seeing eyes watches Quinn and Mike wherever they go. A really spooky mystery story paying homage to Nancy Drew, such fun.

Oh my goodness. Where to start with this book? It was RIGHT UP MY ALLEY. Creepy, atmospheric, and fast-paced. I was hooked from page one, friends. The relationship between the characters was delightful! Authentic, sweet, and perfect for this age group. The mystery unfolded nicely as well and the eerie scenes kept me reading well past bedtime. Can't wait for more from this author! Thank you so much for the advance copy, Abrams. I enjoyed every moment of this read and can't wait to celebrate the release!

Fabulously Mysterious and Creepy

I thoroughly enjoyed this book for many reasons. I loved the slow burn, the mysterious, creepy vibes and I totally adored the relationship between Quinn and Mike. A YA mystery with spooky twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat until the end!

Wow this book was incredible! It is a bit of a slow burn, especially because it is a 300 page middle grade book, but boy is it worth your while! There were multiple moments when my jaw actually dropped. That is not to mention I was genuinely creeped out, especially towards the end. Will 100% be reading the next two books in the series!

Omg this is so good, it’s geared for middle grade readers but great for adults to enjoy too. It’s a creepy, page turner about Quinn Parker and Mike who are classmates and neighbors living across the street from “The Oldies”. The Oldies have always lived in their houses, donating money to services in the community but something is off, they don’t age! Quinn and Mike are determined to find out what their secret is. This is a wonderful debut! I cannot wait for Book #2. Thanks to Abrams Books for an ebook ARC. This is my honest review.

A BIG Thank You to Netgalley and Abrams Amulet Books for providing me with an advanced reader’s copy of “The Stitchers (Fright Watch #1)” for my review.

Those who read my reviews know that I always love reading a good spooky story. I still love the old R.L. Stine Goosebumps, Fear Street and Point Horror books. Having said that, I am SO happy and nostalgic because this book is written so well!

Firstly, I loved Quinn and Mike as the main characters! They have an amazing friendship, with hints of blossoming into something more. There is no unnecessary angst or drama between them, and all they want to do is solve the case. I loved all the supporting characters as well, whether it be Zoe, Red or her Grandmother. The Oldies are extremely creepy, especially Mr. Brown with the speedy legs. I also thought some of the scenes were eerie, like when Quinn sees the face on the pond, or when they see Dr. Smith operating on Ms. Attwood.

Also, I can’t believe this is the author’s first book. She really has a talent for writing scary tales and I hope she continues to release more books in the same genre. Furthermore, the author has paced the story very well where there is always something happening. Even though there is not too many twists and turns, I loved the way Quinn and Mike plot to finding clues and solving the mystery.

Anyway, the Stitchers is one of those stories that will grab you from page 1 and keep you hooked. I read this book in one sitting and thoroughly enjoyed reading it! Overall, I thought it is a great start to the series and cannot wait for the future books to be released!

"The water moves beneath my gaze. It whispers my name, calling me toward it. My fingers skim the surface, and suddenly something- or someone- grabs ahold of my hand within the water, pulling me over the rocks and down into the murk and scum and the darkness. I'm screaming, and choking, and fighting to free myself, but the hand grips me tighter, drags me lower until I can no longer see, or feel, or hope."

Imagine taking parts from RL Stine and Stephen King, splashing it with a little Stranger Things, and wrapping it up in a B Horror movie. Close your eyes and picture it. Embrace it and breathe it in. Remember all those terrifying thoughts that ran through your head as you experience the fear of being spooked as goosebumps spread up and down your arms. This is all of that. It brought back memories from my childhood and that feeling I got when I read my first horror novel. This is the middle-grade horror novel that we've been waiting for!

You can tell very early on that Lorien did her homework on how to create the perfect atmosphere for a horror novel. The creep factor was there along with the heart of the amazing teen detective duo of Quinn and Mike. Those two elements come together to create the most amazing MG Horror novel released since Point Horror. But this was more than just a spooky read, it had close best friends and the strongest family bond. It was absolutely endearing.

The Stitchers was a fantastic homage to the horror greats. The story unraveled at the perfect moments and kept me interested throughout. I found myself getting lost between the pages and I couldn't put this one down. I'm so very excited to read more in this series and more by this amazing author. You'll have a hard time trusting your neighbors after this one.

I believe this is a book that is important for young readers. The plot itself is solid, and there are some genuinely creepy parts, but the characters truly shined. I thought Quinn’s character was a gem, she felt like a real 13 year old navigating through the grief of losing a parent and other adolescent issues (friendships, crushes, school sports). Any kid reading this from the intended age group is sure to relate to Quinn and Mike.

I also like how the plot was creepy, but not too watered down that it was bland. Of course it was still middle grade, but it was fun, which is exactly what I was looking for.

The familial elements tied in were also very well done, I truly felt the love Quinn had for her relatives—especially her dad and Grandma Jane. Her internal feelings she associated with her grandma’s cooking or memories of her dad felt extremely fleshed out. This is truly a character who FEELS.

Her friendships with Mike and Zoey were also great. The banter, the level of care, their interactions—all felt authentic.

Very solid read. I’m glad to have read this eerie tale, it was a blast!

Time for more housekeeping as I read something I've been wanting to get to for a while. This is another modern GB throwback of sorts, not as blatant as others but the blurb mentions it directly. This came out in 2020 and comes to us from Lorien Lawerence. There's already been a sequel with another on the way. I was already interested in it just for being what it is, but then I saw the critic quote on the cover is from Stephen King. Yes, for real. That's a pretty high honor. Plus, like a few before her, Lorien ended up following me on Instagram so I felt obligated to get to it soon.

Now is soon, and it was pretty good. Quinn Parker and her friend Mike Warren have noticed how odd their elderly neighbors are. They've been around forever and just act rather suspicious. Quinn's late father was interested in the mystery of these folks and it's because of him she's deadset on figuring out. They are dubbed the Oldies and these kids want to figure out what their deal is, before it's too late.

I liked how nice a lot of this was. The characters are generally likable, and work well together. Quinn and Mike have a solid friendship. They bicker but in a believable and charming way. They imply a "thing" with them but thankfully don't go too far with it just yet. She has these female friends who are nice too. A lot of nice-ness here, there's also an awesome grandma. Almost Aunt Emma levels lol.

The dead dad thing of course adds nice tragedy to it. There's some solid emotional moments there. It doesn't bubble up to anything huge but it works as it is. It's more mystery focused than horror which mostly works alright. The horror we do get works, like a dream sequence or when we find out why it's called that. The villains work, and the answers do make sense. Usually there's a bunch of questions I have, but it mostly all lined up. Maybe there's holes to poke but I didn't notice too many It almost felt empty, I'm used to these being so well thought out lol. One aspect reminded me of Fear Street more than Goosebumps which I find amusing.

The climax, while decent, could have been a bit bigger, and I wanted a bit more from the epilogue. We get out nicely closes things out generally, I just needed a bigger now to some character stuff. That said, there's still decent setup and payoff and reveals.

I feel it's missing something to really put it over the edge. The writing is good, no major vocab stuff but it flows well. It's in present tense which is something, didn't notice it until like a few chapters in. It's not super action heavy so it could have been tighter. The chapters can get a bit long but maybe I'm too used to shorter ones. Could used some tightening but it's not too bad in that regard.

So nothing too bad to report on here. The ending is a bit of an inbetweeteen. Some first entries in series like this have a perfect cap with it just happening to be able to lead to more, some are too much of a To be Continued, this is in the middle. It leaves it open for the next one, closes this off well enough but could had a bit more, as I said.

So overall, it's pretty good. The story is solid, the characters and likable, and it ends up being pretty nice. Not much else, it's pretty good so I'm interested in the 2nd one. Don't know when I'll get it but I swear I'll do so eventually.

And...that's about it, that closes this out. No idea when/what my next misc read will be, see ya for whatever it is though.

While I found the horror aspect of this to be really intriguing and a bit more spookier than other middle grades I have read, I found the budding romance to be an annoyance. This book definitely falls more on the older side of middle grade-on the cusp of YA range and I completely understand the placement of the budding romance, but one of the reasons I personally read middle grade is I don't have to worry about a romance storyline. But with that said I can see how this side plot would appeal to kids of these ages so it over all fits and the budding romance is done well, I just wish it did take a slightly bigger back seat to the horror portion.

I did also feel that the story took forever to get to the reveal of what the Oldies were up to and then it was all resolved really quickly in the final two chapters. The build up did not match the pay off well enough in my opinion. I think had the story had less side plots with the budding romance, the track team, and Quinn's everyday life it would have been better. I was hooked for the first 50% of the story but after that I found it harder and harder to pick it back up because it just felt like it was starting to drag because it was taking forever to focus on the Oldies.

Also I found it really annoying how Mike kept calling Quinn, by her last name, Quinn is such a pretty name but all this kid kept saying was Parker, and it drove me crazy.

This was a great creepy read! The Oldies are so creepy and mysterious. I loved Parker & Mike, and even Billy. Parker's grandma was fun and her reveal at the end was cool.

I don't think this book is too spooky for middle-grade readers but it does touch on some sensitive topics that kids may need to discuss with a parent while reading, such as parental death, murder, and breaking the law (breaking & entering, spying through windows).

Highly recommend for any readers who like a light, fun, fast mysterious paranormal read!

Stay away from the pond, kids.

Thank you to the author for sending me an ARC of this book.

I'm so glad that this is going to be a series, because it hooked me with it's creepy characters and dark (but not overly scary) storyline. See if you can look at your neighbors in the same way after reading this book!

Quinn and her dad knew there was something off about their neighbors, whom they dubbed "the Oldies". No one knows how long they've lived on Goodie Lane but their strange behaviors (such frequently bandaged body parts) and the fact that they never seem to get any older seem very strange. But when Quinn's dad dies, her interest in The Oldies fades away...until one of The Oldies starts running extremely fast and has a very familiar marking on his leg. As Quinn and her neighbor, Mike, begin to investigate, they find a link to an old pond and a tragedy from many years ago. But The Oldies are on to them, and they have no desire to give up their secrets.

I really loved the storyline of this book. It's a eerie mystery that I didn't find scary, but was definitely on the dark side. The investigation to determine who (or what) The Oldies are, and what they're doing on Goodie Lane led to lots of intrigue, and it was hard to put this book down. I loved the tie-in with with the town's history. The chemistry between Quinn and Mike that complicates their partnership, and also has an impact on Quinn's relationship with her best friend, Zoe, adds a very middle school feel to the story. The ending was surprising and definitely leads the reader with questions and wanting to know more. The book is also an extremely reasonable length at 263 pages which helps it appeal to more readers.

I'll be purchasing a copy of this book for my library's collection.

Frankenstein meets The Burbs! This book was so much fun. I don’t just mean the plot, but the writing. The style of writing felt like Lorien Lawerence was having so much fun writing this; every sentence was filled with personality. Even the creepy parts of the book(there are plenty!) felt like I was watching a midnight movie with a huge tub of popcorn that I put too much butter on. The obvious Goosebumps comparisons are going to come with this, but I want to say this was so much more. Lawerence catches the essence of being a young teen; the awkwardness, the impulsiveness, and the anxieties. This took me back to being a kid in 3rd grade when I picked up “The Beasties” by William Sleator; a great story, great emotions throughout, and a read geared for younger readers that is going to be a favorite for people of all ages— as every book should! I’ve always loved the John Bellaires books, the only other book that I’ve read like the Bellaires classics has been The Pawnbroker and the Boy by Sarah Jane Huntington. Now I can say The Stitchers is added to that list(which isn’t to say there aren’t more, I just haven’t discovered them!) sure to be a book people will read as comfort food.

I wanted to like this book but I found it a bet too slow for my tastes. I’m still glad a bought the book to support a new writer and hope the series goes well but gets better. I just think it could have been shorter and better plotted.

It’s nothing like an R L Stein novel.
