A native of the Chicago area, I've traveled the world and had the opportunity to work in refugee camps, medical camps, and in community assistant groups. Although I could write many nonfiction stories about these places, I much prefer fiction and the creativity that comes with it. I currently live in Indiana, among the cows and flat lands filled with row after row of corn. There are many words that could describe me: mom, wife, sister, the 'crazy aunt,' the first to jump into any adventure (while pulling you by the arm and insisting you join me), or even the quiet one that feels for others on a level that few understand. But what you really need to know is why I write.
For me, writing is more than just a window into my head...it's the chance to share things I've seen, I've dreamt, and things I long for with fellow readers. It's nothing short of magical to bring that to life for others to experience it with me!
When will I learn to read the title of a book, I mean really read the title?! The title alone should have been a hint as to the twists and plots of this story. Twists I honestly did not see coming and when they smacked me in the face – I wasn’t sure how to react. Was I mad? Sad? Happy? Angry? Frustrated? Crying? This book brought out each emotion in me.
This is a more difficult review to write because I don’t want to giveaway those twists - mind boggling twists.
Hmmmm, okay, let’s talk characters and how they were written. You meet Mel and fall in love with her immediately – she is so so sweet and good hearted. She is very close to her sister Joan – so close that they live only a few houses away from each other. Mel and Joan’s parents passed away many years ago and the girls took over their flower shop. Joan is happily married and wants the same for her sister – so much so that she tries setting her up on blind dates – often, very often. Mel is used to this and takes it as a grain of salt UNTIL she meets Miguel – his heritage is Peruvian. Miguel is a college professor. They fit together well – and the love is apparent from the start between these two. Personally, for me – I never felt the connection between them – there was not that pull. Mel and Miguel do get married and have a son, Josiah. Everything on the surface seems fabulous. Josiah needs a surgery and Miguel has a “favorite” doctor to perform this surgery – which happens to be in Peru. This is when the story really begins to develop – and the twists I mentioned above – MIND. BLOWN.
I did feel the ending was a bit rushed and wished we would have had a bit more time to become accustomed to the choices the author had made for us. While I do agree with the ending, I wanted more. I needed more.
This was a debut novel for SK Lessner and quite honestly, I am impressed. I can’t wait to read more from her and watch her grow as an author.
4 stars from me! I received a complimentary copy of Twisted Truths & Leveled Lies in exchange for an honest review.
This was such a good book!! This book was longer than most books I read (it at least took me longer to read than most books) but I loved the detail that the author gave to each character and each scene. You really got to know each character and how they were feeling and what they were thinking. Mel is such a strong woman who really put her family first. She had her heartbroken a few years ago and isn't ready to really get involved with a guy yet. But of course her sister and brother-in-law want to set her up with someone. She finally agrees and when she meets Miguel both of them feel sparks right away. Miguel is so smooth and charming and very loving. He is always putting Mel first and wants to make her feel loved and cherished. Miguel is always a little vague about his family and his relationship with them. Mel tries not to push about it but she always wants to know more. She finally gets her chance when they need to go to his home country for a medical procedure for her son. From there everything gets very weird. There are lots of lies and hiding. Mel is not told what is going on and she finally has to make a decision for her and her son. She then meets Brett. Oh Brett. I love Brett. He is the bad boy is the story and by god he is hot!!! He is the bad boy with the heart of gold that is so kind and gentle and loving and does everything he can to protect Mel and her son. But the day comes where she needs to decide if she wants Brett in her life or Miguel. I honestly did not know how this story was going to end until the very last page. I am very excited to read more books from this author. She did a wonderful job and this book has some twists and turns I NEVER would have seen coming!!! This is a must read!!!
This novel had so many faces to it. When I read the description I was pretty hooked! I mean, who doesn't love the idea of a sexy doctor and then a tattooed and pierced stranger, right? So when I started reading, I was hooked immediately!
Mel is this girl who is so caught up in life she doesn't think she had the time or the ability to find a man. And then her sister brings Miguel into her life. From the beginning of their relationship you couldn't help but be addicted to what they have. There were a few strange things from the beginning that really made you think about Miguel, and we only know so much about Mel's past. As for Miguel, we know very little until a few plot twists happen near the middle of the book. The first part is all rainbow and butterflies and sexy, sexy times.
The second half, there I have to admit. I got a little stuck. There are some tough subjects in this book dealing with the middle east and their views of women, and I did struggle a little with that. Once I trudged through that part though, I was a gonner again!!! Brett, the tattooed and pierced stranger, he is everything in this book. From the time we meet him until the very last sentence of the book he hooks you. His charm and genuineness keeps you begging for more of him.
Each plot twist leads you down a rabbit hole and you really can't ask for more than that and amazing characters in a book. SK has amazing writing, and it's all very deep. The story moves so well and there isn't any over explanation and everything was crisp. This makes me really excited to see what else she might write!
I don't know what to say. I need to sit and think for a bit. I'm torn with how the book ended and need to think about it before an official review comes. I will have one soon though.
Okay. So I've thought and thought about it. I don't know exactly how to say any of my opinions without spoilers. So I will be as honest as I can without giving too much away!
I can not say enough how much I loved this story. It was a real nail biter. It was beautifully written, the characters were all amazing. Yep even the jerks, so well written. You can't help but hate the villains and love the heroes wholeheartedly. The only thing I didn't "love" was the ending. Hahaha, I wanted it to go in another direction. Now, that's not to say the ending was bad. I'm just throwing a tantrum because I wanted something else to happen! Hahaha! This story was/is EPIC!
Mel and Miguel's relationship is portrayed on a realistic timetable and seems perfect on the surface. When they travel out of the country for their son's spinal surgery, her husband becomes a stranger she doesn't recognize and Mel's life becomes a nightmare when she stumbles upon a heinous plot that has the potential to unravel life as she knows it. She needs to find someone to help her and her son get back home and find order amidst all the chaos. I don't want to say anything else because this is where the story really starts to shine with so many plot twists...Lessner had my attention riveted to see what the outcome would be!
I'll say it right now. Team Brett! If Miguel was charismatic and debonair, Brett has a southern boy charm hidden under all those tats and piercings. Mel and Miguel's relationship was great physically but never seemed to connect emotionally. With Brett and Mel there was an emotional and physical intimacy you just couldn't miss. Frankly, I thought Brett was a much better match for Mel.
I have to admit the story starts out slow...however, I recommend NOT putting this book down because the last half of the book is definitely worth it!
I received a free copy copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Twisted Truths and Leveled Lies I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this book to review.
I'm not even sure where to begin! From the title, I should have guessed that there would be twists but it still took me by surprise! Even when I thought I knew what was going on, it turned out I had it very wrong. I was not at all prepared for what went on! I love books that keep you guessing throughout, and this certainly did that. I was on a roller-coaster ride of emotions throughout. The characters were so like-able and real. The story-line was brilliant and thought-provoking.
Mel and her sister, Joan, are close. So close, in fact, that they live only a few houses away from each other. Joan is happily married, and wants her sister to find the same happiness she has found. She likes to throw Friday night dinners and invite men for Mel to meet. Mel isn't a fan of being set-up, but she loves her sister and can't refuse her. It is at one of these dinners that she meets Miguel. There is an instant attraction, and she finds herself a bumbling mess in his presence. The story follows their blossoming romance and the trials they face when his family is involved. I won't say anymore, you'll have to read it to find out the rest!
WOW WOW WOW What a great 1st novel This book has every thing you want in a novel Romance, suspense, lots of twist & turns. I could go on & on but I don't want to spoil it. So read it for your self.
It starts out a bit slow but I stress do not stop reading it you won't be disappointed

*Warning* This book contains material suitable for ages 18+.
Holy wowness! You have to put everything you are reading down and start reading this book immediately! It will have you hooked and scrambling to turn the pages to read more. It will have you on the edge of your seat.
When Mel and Miguel meet, they have an instant bond that neither can deny. After falling pregnant they marry and Mel thinks she has the perfect life. But when her son needs spinal surgery, Melissa and Miguel must travel to Peru to get their son the best of care. But when Mel finds out what is really going on in the after care of her son it's a race against time to escape her husband and his brother. While trying to escape, Mel meets Brett, an ex marine who believes her story and is determined to help her. Will Brett be able to protect her and get her away from harm?
I cannot describe how freaking awesome this and I promise you won't be disappointed. This book is full of twists and turns and a lot of OMFG moments. There are not enough stars to rate this book as it's worthy of 100 of them!
Debut Novel - great book that will keep you guessing
This book is definitely a little slow to start, but keep reading and you will not be disappointed. The book starts out just like any other romance. Mel & Miguel meet for the first time at one of Mel's sister, Joan's "matchmaker" dinners. Mel finds herself surprised to feel instantly attracted to Miguel. It takes you through their budding romance and it isn't until after they are married that things begin to change. I have to admit that since this is a suspense romance I found myself wondering when something was going to happen. But once the twists started happening and I thought I knew what was going to happen, then there was another surprise. The best part of this book was being able to feel Mel's joy, pain & fears throughout the book. I enjoyed the author taking me into a world that I didn't know much about but was still able to pull on my heartstrings.
Great debut novel & I look forward to reading more.
Ok. So I really wanted to like this book more than I did. I really struggled the first 50%. The writing was great. The author did a great job with describing the characters and locations. I felt that the first half dragged, almost like there was to much info.
Once I got to the 50% mark and we started to get more info on what was happening I became more invested in the book. What was revealed was something I never saw coming. You could feel the pain and struggle that Mel was going.
I also did struggle with the end. I understand why Mel chose who she did but I didn't really agree with it. There was a moment at the end that she has with the other person that made it feel they were not done.
This was a book that I do recommend. Even though I struggled with some parts of it the story itself was good. I would never have guess at the twists that were thrown in. I am happy that I took the time to read it. The story line was very different from others I have read.
This is a new author for me with a debut novel. This author is on the right track. Copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest and spoiler free review.
The first part of the story deals with Mel who was introduced to Miguel by her sister. It deals with there time getting to know each other, falling in love and a look at an HEA. I don't think so. They leave the country for a time and that's where there is some major mind blowing twist in the story.
The beginning was a slow easing into the story but after a while that's where everything happens, the lies, the deceit. The author is great at manipulating our state of minds. I thought I was reading a certain kind of story but then without notice it shifts.
The story starts of slowly like you are in a rollercoaster, climbing up and up until you hold still at the top. The rush, the fall all merged in one plot twist which keep your breath away and the only thing you can do is brace yourself.
This is an amazing story which can actually happen in real life and makes it even better. I'm still try to catch my breath. What a ride.
I’ve never read anything by this Author before but I will be sure checking out her other books This book blow me away I didn’t have a clue what it was about I went in blind well kind of I watched the book trailer and well that blow me away first but I didn’t read the blurb so I really never knew what it was going to be about. But what a story it is everything I like in a book! but I will honestly say I not read a book like this before.
It is Twisted and such a roller coaster of a ride. The emotions I felt while reading.. Happy, Sad, Angry, I cried. I went through them all..
We start of with Mel single women happy with life I really liked her character. Although I really felt for what she was going through, I did get annoyed with her a couple of times. Migue I really liked his decisions not so much. Although by the end of the book I understood more.. I still liked him and was rooting for him through the book. Brett Sweet Brett I adore this man how he helps Mel out so much. Bad boy ex soilder. I loved the Characters, they are so well written they were very believable characters . The book is well written. The only thing I didn’t really like was the ending don’t get me wrong I was happy with it. And how things played out. If I had one problem with the book I just felt it was a bit rushed at the end I could have done with a bit more.. I think it because I really didn’t want the book to end. But don’t let that put you off really grab this book you will not be disappointed. I started this morning my house is a mess once I started I couldn’t put it down I needed to turn the next page as if my life depended on it I needed to know the answers and what was going to happen…
This book was so full of Twists and turns I didn’t see coming.
A REALLY IRRITATING READ! (Ending killed it for me!) *SPOILERS*
DON'T bother if you're looking for a HEA because this book does not deliver. I almost thought a man must've written it its so not in touch with most women's psyche. Having spent most of the book in love with the main hero of the saga, we're treated to a last page 180 flip of epic proportions.
Can't believe I struggled to the end of all that, only to see Mel ditch the main live interest for her ex-husband who indirectly almost caused her and their son's deaths!
Well THAT'S several hours of my life I'm never getting back!!
A REALLY IRRITATING READ!
I read this book as part of my Kindle Unlimited subscription (free book but I have to pay £7.99 a month for the subscription)
The book is full of surprises and the reader gets to know the characters well. I did not expect the climax at all--very creative.
The author is very descriptive and did a great job describing the scenes throughout--I have a very low pain tolerance, and the author's description of how the heroine felt after falling and hitting her head actually made me queasy along with the character.
The ending wraps everything up nicely, but I was very disappointed by which guy the heroine picks to be with. I definitely would have made a different choice. Overall, though, A+ read. Loved it!
I was blown away by the twists and lies in this book. Mel should have trusted her gut in the beginning with Miguel. when Mel thinks she finally got her happy ending, she thinks she it's all alone and its the end. instead she gets a knight in a white tent. this was my first time reading this author. I am giving a honest review of a book I received. I think you will be entertained from this story and won't be able to figure out want happens next. you will be on the edge of your seat
In Twisted Truths and Levelled Lies, we meet Mel, a longtime single woman who runs a floral shop she inherited from her deceased parents, with her older sister Jean. Mel and Jean are extremely close, and Mel is Jean's biggest cheerleader in her marriage, but it just hasn't worked out for her in her own lovelife. In a long line of failed set ups from Jean, Mel finally agrees to one last couples dinner, where she meets Miguel. Miguel is an insanely good looking Peruvian man, who is a doctor in Orthopedics, though working as a Professor, and the two are instantly drawn to each other. As their romances progresses to marriage and a wonderful child, Josiah (though not necessarily in that order) we learn more of each character and become a party of their almost idyllic world. We learn of Miguel's strict family, their beliefs when it comes to "American Women", and the treatment of women in general, and why Miguel wants nothing to do with his overbearing brother Osan. Their happy world is about to crumble apart when the couple must fly down to Peru to give their son a necessary surgery to fix his scoliosis. In a twist of fate, the family is stuck staying in Osan's house, with no connection to the outside world, Mel is frightened of Osan and dependant on Miguel, who is disappearing from her life more and more. Lessner turns out world upside down as Mel uncovers the truth about why she is being forced to stay in the house, and why her once loving husband is so withdrawn that she feels there is no longer a marriage to speak of. Desperate to get Josiah and herself out of the house, the pace of the book intensifies even more and you find yourself on the edge of your seat, cheering, praying, crying and swooning in just one sitting. An astounding first novel with well developed characters, settings and plot twists that will have you reeling.
Every time I pick up a new book by a new writer (to me) I don't know what I'm getting myself into. Will I read a few pages and with horror at bad editing and bad storytelling erase it immediately or will I be swept into a world written so honestly and beautifully that I can't put it down?
Well, this book was the second response. Every character was drawn with exquisite detail, every plot line was written with loving care and concern. Each setting became part of the landscape, a flower shop full of exotic blooms to the beautiful house in the foreign country where Josie had to recover from his first surgery or the cement bomb bunker at the American embassy. All in all it is an awe inspiring book, a book that makes you wish you could write that well.
I wanted the ending to go the other way, but I understand why the author completed it the way she did. Humph. However, I can say no matter what--I Loved This Book!
Wow, this book doesn’t half take you on a twisted roller coaster ride. It definitely lives up to its title and doesn’t disappoint either. The plot is very realistic and believable despite being shocking at the same time and it makes you think and consider life round you. It follows Mel who is a florist and together with her sister Joan they run their parents business. Joan is always setting Mel up on blind dates and she’s had enough. Through sheer pestering, Mel agrees to one more date as apparently she just had to meet Mr. “Breathtakingly Handsome” Miguel aka Mr. “Breathtakingly Handsome” meets Mel and is instantly drawn to her. Her beauty astounds him and he cannot believe that he has been set up with her. She is well worth the drama and hassle that being with her will cause. Jump to 3 years later and Mel and Miguel have their 2 year old son Josiah who needs surgery. They agree to take him to Peru where Miguel’s family is from and where the best surgeons will be. But from there all is not as it seems. Mel starts to fear for her and her son’s safety and as secrets are revealed she finds help in a tattooed ex-marine with a heart of gold. But just who will Mel choose at the end of it all? I adored this book when reading about how Miguel wooed Mel. He is so romantic and caring and despite his own family issues he knows how to turn on the charm. They are such a cute couple and I was routing for them throughout the book. I loved how this book deals with some pretty tough yet truthful situations and stigmas. I can’t say too much more about them without ruining the book but let’s just say throwing Brett the ex-marine into the mix makes the book sizzle even more. I wish I could give the book a full 5 stars but I found the end a little lacking. After all the build up with Miguel, his family and Brett, not to mention the situation they all find themselves in, I wanted a more explosive ending but it became a bit of a damp squib. It wouldn’t put me off reading any more of this authors work though and I’m happy I found a new author to look up and stalk.
When I started this story I was disappointed thinking it was one of those fluff stories, maybe girl meets and married a guy who had a former wife or something. This was no where near that! Mel is just no into dating and her sister fixes her up every Friday night or so by inviting a single guy over. Mel told her sister this is the last time but when she see Miguel all bets are off. They two of them can't take their eyes off each other so when she doesn't hear from him she is a little mad. He does come see her at the flower shop and they begin to date but when he says he's going home for a week or so and he doesn't come back she is so upset she faints and hits her head. She wakes up to find out she is pregnant and Miguel is back so they get married and have a little boy. Poor kid has to have spinal surgery and in order to have the best they have to go out of the country. Mels is nervous but she has Miguel so she can handle it even though they are staying at his brothers house and his brother hates Americans. All of the sudden Miguel is detached from Mel and their son Josie not being home all day so Mel is assuming that he is cheating on her but it's much worse. I couldn't put this book down because I had to see how it ended and the strength Mel possessed is amazing. Reviewed on behalf of Once upon an Alpha

I received this book from the author for an honest review.
I really liked this book and would have given it five but for the fact that only someone really dumb would k d not know the difference between Afghanis and Peruvians .The ending I did not like because no one in their right mind would give up love for a deceitful man would they ?
Twisted Truths and Leveled Lies is an amazing debut novel that I couldn't put down. It's a beautiful love story, filled with characters you will love and an unexpected twist I never saw coming. It's a definite must read and I can't wait to read more from this author.
Amazing well written story with a twisted tangled storyline that sucked me in immediately. Everything is not what it seems. Great read and I cannot wait to read more by this author. I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Thrills, passion, and intrigue continue to keep you glued to the pages of this fascinating romantic suspense story. The story will keep you on the edge of your seat to find out what happened next. This was a great romance story that is full of emotional angst, scorching love scenes, a compelling storyline, and this book was well written by Shannon K. Lessner. When reading the story, it may make you feel sad, confused, appalled, and even euphoric. What moves me is just how the author was able to make their situation seem credible and realistic—their hurts, ambivalence, etc. This is the first time I read a book by this author, but I assure you, it will not be the last. I was enthralled with the characters of Mel and Miguel. Mel and her sister, Joan, inherited their parent’s floral shop, and her sister was always trying to set her up with a date. Joan invited Mel to a dinner party, and when she met Miguel (tall, dark, handsome and sexy doctor), she was enchanted by him. The chemistry between Mel and Miguel grows more potent the more time they spend together—the sex is off the chart hot! You will need to read the book to find out if love really conquers all? What will Mel do when she finds out that Miguel is not what she thought he was—what type of clandestine secrets and lies were hidden? There are several surprises and plot twists and turns within the story that makes it interesting. The scenes are well written, fast-paced and flow smoothly from one scene. This book will pique your interest and draw you in from the beginning to the very end.
So real i was actually emotional. Amazing storytelling...believable characters you will root for...until the plot twists and you aren't sure WHO to root for now. Made me cry and catch my breath. Kept me guessing. Brought out the "momma bear" inside of me. Worth the read. <3
