Politics: Why It Matters
People so often focus on the negative aspects of politics, like greed and corruption, but without politics we would be lost. It frames everything we do, and it has the power to bring about real and positive change. Politics, Andrew Gamble reminds us, defeated slavery and secured equal rights for women and minorities. Without savvy and principled politicians and citizens willing to engage in political action, there would still be civil war in Ireland and apartheid in South Africa. Closer to home, local politicians stand up for communities and endeavour to advance the prosperity and wellbeing of their constituents. But it hasn’t always been like this, and without good politicians we could throw it all away. Right now humanity is in a race against itself, adjusting to new technologies that are destabilizing democracy and creating massive inequalities. چرا سیاست مهم است؟
احتمالا برای پاسخ به این سوال، چندان لازم نباشد که سراغ کتابهای قطور سیاسی برویم یا مقالات ثقیل پژوهشی را تورق کنیم.
خوشبختانه یا به احتمال بیشتر متاسفانه، در این جغرافیایی که پدران و مادرانمان، ما را به زندگی بخشیدهاند، نفس نکشیدن همانقدر بعید است که سیاسی نبودن!
در این خاورمیانهی مسحورشده که هر گوشهاش گردبادی میپیچد و قطرات خون را بر ذرات خاک مینشاند، برای درک سیاست کافیست جرعه آبی بنوشیم، تکه نانی بخوریم، نفسی عمیق بکشیم. همین برای سیاسی شدنمان کافیست!
همین کافیست که روی خاکِ سرزمینمان چند ثانیهای را صرف قدمزدن کنیم تا به یاد بیاوریم اینجا خاورمیانه است: همان گوشهی نهچندان دورافتاده از جهان که در ۱۹۴۷، جهانی دور افتاده تصمیم گرفت حق قدمزدن روی خاک را، از ملتِ همان خاک بستاند!
و سالیانیست که جوانان فلسطینی، لبنانی، سوری، عراقی، افغانی و ایرانی به «دلایل سیاسی» کشته شدند، به «دلایل سیاسی» اسیر شدند و به «دلایل سیاسی» از موطنشان رانده شدند.
اینجا همان سمتوسوی دنیاست که ما را از آغاز «سیاسی» زاده است و «سیاسی» بار آورده است. از همان کودکی، حضورِ سیاست بود که بر سر سفرههامان، با ما همغذا میشد. بحثِ سیاست بود که همنشین دورهمیهامان میشد. حرفِ سیاست بود که موجب حسرتها و ناامیدیهایمان میشد، مانع آرزوهایمان میشد. فریدون فروغی از «یار دبستانی» میخواند و فرهاد از «یه شب مهتاب»، صدای سیاست بود که نوازشگرِ گوشهای سیاستزدهی والدینمان میشد.
پس احتمالا بناست همه عمرمان را از این خمار مستی سر بر نداریم؛ چرا که هنوز ما نبودیم و سیاست بر سرنوشتِ ما نشست؛ تاجگذاری کرد!
اشتباه برداشت نکنید!
حرف من این نیست که بگویم سیاست برای دیگر ساکنان جهان اهمیت ندارد! فقط میپرسم که ما، ساکنانِ بلادی که محکوم شدهایم به داشتنِ طلای سیاه، چگونه از اهمیت سیاست حرف نزنیم وقتی سیاست پشت دربِ خانههامان کمین کرده است؟ سایهی سیاهش را بر سر زندگیمان گسترده است! پاهای بلند و کثیفش را بر روی سینههامان فشار میدهد و بر خود واجب میداند که تا آخرین استخوانها و مفصلهامان را خرد کند. انگشتان بلند و کشیدهاش را بر گردنمان حلقه کرده است و هر لحظه راه حنجرهمان را تنگتر و تنگتر میکند. سیاست یقهمان را گرفته است.
سالیانیست که سیاست جلوی زندگیمان میایستد و زندگیمان جلوی سیاست مقاومت میکند.
پس سیاست مهم است: هم میتواند از ما، مردمانی آزاد و آزاده بسازد، و هم میتواند ما را خرد کند. پس سیاست اهمیت دارد؛ آن هم وقتی که زندگیهای تکتکمان، درست وسطِ دریایی عمیق و لجنآلود قرار گرفته است که سیاست نام دارد:
«مرد بحری دائما بر تختهی خوف و رجاست
چونکه تخته و مرد فانی شد جز استغراق نیست»

اندرو گمبل در کتاب "چرا سیاست مهم است" تعاریف ساده ای از اصول ابتدایی سیاست تعریف میکند.
ارائهی او در متنِ کتاب بهگونهایست که احتمالا برای افراد جدید الورود به دنیای علوم سیاسی جالب باشد؛ اما برای دیگر خوانندگان حاوی حرف نو و جدیدی نیست، البته بهجز چند پاراگراف و چندین جمله.

A book whose title truly describes its contents. It does not contain lengthy political theories or overly academic viewpoints/opinions of political experts, but rather emphasizes to the reader why they should start caring and paying attention to politics.
The author really takes the position/viewpoint of a layperson who doesn't care about politics, the causes why someone is reluctant to know, follow, or get involved with politics, to the consequences that occur when people really don't care and let others make political decisions, which will also have an impact on their lives.
By using simple examples that are relevant in everyday life and using the way of thinking of ordinary people who often do not care about political issues, the author tries to slowly change the way of thinking of his readers, showing that politics operates in every aspect of our lives without us realizing it and explaining how political decisions can affect or even regulate our lives. It is therefore important for us as part of society to be able to know and understand politics adequately so that the political decisions taken actually benefit us and not harm us. As a reader, I felt that the author succeeded in sparking my curiosity and wanted to keep reading page after page of the book.
I highly recommend this book for those who are just about to start studying politics formally, or those who still haven't figured out why we as a society need to understand politics.

So I'm definitely using a different system next to take notes next time, that took a lot longer that it should've.
But ignoring that, this book made itself very understandable to someone that have an interest in entering the academic field of Political Science, and while starting off easy to explain it do get gradually more advanced as you read but this happens slowly enough that you can smoothly adjust along with it.
I'd strongly recommend reading this if you've got any interest in finding out what Political Science is all about but haven't found any easy enough way to do it yet. :)

A brilliant book for the simple reason that it provides a great introduction for anyone to the world of politics, and makes something of a convincing case for why it's relevant. I loved the section on the different schools of thought for when it comes to how to study politics, but the text overall is great. It's a very manageable length too - a chapter a day for four days is perfect.
