Ruby Foo is a delightful, middle school foodie. In this first book, an assignment of WWII sends her on a quest to discover hidden family secrets and develop deeper connections.

I loved this first book about Ruby Foo! It’s a quick read: I read it while getting a pedicure this afternoon! Ruby is adorable! I love her fascination and passion for cooking and food! The story telling is well organized and quick paced. I loved that there were recipes included in the book—my mouth was watering! The themes of self discovery, family connections, and learning your history were all fully explored. This book made me want to brush up on my knowledge of the Pacific arena of WWII and the Sino-Japanese conflicts. And I’m excited to try some of the recipes in the book! This was a perfect fit for me and I highly recommend Ruby Foo! I’m so excited to read the second book now—Adventure #2: Ruby Goes to Spain!

A great way for children to explore other cultures. I loved the recipes added in. Every time we read one, my son would ask if we could make it. It was engaging and funny but emotional at times as well. I think my favorite part was that she used memories at times.

Food is something that connects us, it is highly associated with memories and experiences. This author takes advantage of it and creates a wonderful book for children.

Mysterious, family centered, mouth watering, and emotional; all words I would use to describe the story. It’s a great way to explore a different culture (foods, customs, family life). Will definitely be experimenting with the recipes soon!
