Officer Gordon Butler and his overanxious trainee Dakota Ayala are dispatched to a scene where they find a woman named Melody White who has been stabbed to death. Gordon is not surprised. He’d been called to that address several times to confront Jacob Hulsey who had stalked the victim. The neighbor who placed the call to the Rocky Bluff Police Department reported seeing Hulsey there the night before. But when another neighbor says Melody’s ex-husband had threatened her, and then one of Melody’s co-workers at the day care center where they worked reported a clash between Melody and her boss, suspects seem to be multiplying like Russian nesting dolls. And to add to the difficulty of sorting it all out, Gordon’s new partner is making moves on Gordon’s wife, and detective Doug Milligan’s daughter Beth has become moody and secretive. At least two of the suspects and maybe some others are weaving tangled webs.
Tangled Webs by F.M. Meredith is a page-turner and an entertaining mystery.
Melody White seems to have lived a life of tangled webs. A stalker, her ex-husband, and co-workers all seem to be a part of her story, leading up to her death. The suspects just keep piling up.
Officer Gordon Butler and his trainee partner are on the case. The trainee is making moves on Butler’s wife along the way, and Detective Doug Milligan’s daughter seems to be going through something secretive. Everywhere you turn, there’s another part of the web, and yet it all comes together and makes sense.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a mystery and a police procedural. It’s another wonderful addition to the Rocky Bluff series.
Whenever I read a new Rocky Bluff PD mystery by F.M. Meredith, I feel like I'm visiting with old friends, catching up on what's happening in their lives. In "Tangled Webs," a pre-school teacher has been murdered. Normally Detective Doug Milligan would be assigned to the case but his teen-aged daughter, Beth, has gone missing - along with the mayor's daughter - and Doug must focus on finding them. A great addition to the series!
Return to Rocky Bluff where the local police department is busy solving a murder with numerous suspects, a new officer puts the moves on a colleague's wife, and Doug's teenage daughter becomes secretive and moody.
Tangled Webs by F. M. Meredith starts with a neighbor discovering the body of local daycare teacher, Melody White. People knew someone had been stalking the woman, but the investigation shows her ex-husband and one of her co-workers might also have a motive.
Officer Gordon Butler--one of my favorites--is training the latest new hire, but he can't understand why his wife doesn't like him. He brushes Dakota Ayala's actions off as being overly eager, just like he was when he first started. Could there be something more?
Beth has made great strides since moving in with the Milligans. So, when she starts acting strangely, Doug and Stacey are worried. They hope they can discover what's going on with her.
Meredith's trademark style of blending personal and professional lives of law enforcement is fully evident in the fourteenth installment of the Rocky Bluff P.D. series. I've so enjoyed watching these characters develop book after book. Ryan and Barbara Strickland, Abel and Maria Navarro, Felix and Wendy Zachary, Doug and Stacey Milligan, Gordan Butler and more have gone through numerous professional and personal changes over the years. The introduction of a new police chief several books back also brought some changes for everyone as well. Because the author has stayed true to exploring how the job affects personal lives and vice versa, the reader truly gets to feel like these characters are friends they get to know.
As with other books in the series, there are subplots that play out alongside the other main plots. This helps the reader keep up to date with the goings on of minor characters, too.
A police procedural that makes you feel like you are part of this community is what you find in Tangled Webs.
Each time I read one of F. M. Meredith's Rocky Bluff Police Department books, it's like going back to a place you are familiar with and love. She has a way of creating characters and developing settings that are always welcoming and warm. In spite of various degrees of crimes that sometimes are horrific, the officers and their families remain old and beloved friends and I look forward to reading the latest version of their lives. I especially like the way Marilyn is able to describe the various aspects of the surroundings in which her characters work and live. There is a welcoming ambiance to her books that invite you in and that you will not want to leave. This is another great one.
I always enjoy visiting Rocky Bluff each time Meredith has a new story in the series. This includes seeral favorite characters. I love that they grow and change from book to book. This one has many characters, and they might be hard to keep straight without having read the others in the series. But the mystery is well-written as always and a delight.
A young woman is stabbed in Rockey Bluff, and before long, the officers have several suspecs. As he title suggests, many of those involved are not telling the whole truth. Officer Gordon Butler has to find his way through the tangle of differing stories. Meanwhile, Doug Milligan is having problems with his teenage daughter. I love revisiting these characters from time to time. Throughout the series, the characters change and grow. And they do so in the context of a terrific mystery.
