For the select few martial arts books I’ve read, this one has had the most impact on my life and my game. Ironically, it is one that focuses the least on techniques. Although there were numerous takeaways from this book; the reference to other great books, side stories, etc, the one thing I will always remember is longevity in life. I’ve given up what I may have viewed a lot a year ago, but what I’m understanding now is that it has all been distractions from what is truly important. God, family, career, and a pursuit of deeper meaning found through strangling friends in PJs. I can go on for hours about my love of the art, but I won’t waste your time when you have this beautiful book to read.
Eye roll. This was so hard to read. This is some dude who just wants to vomit his love of Jiujitsu practitioners into a self help book that doesn't always follow his own themes or always make much sense. It doesn't help me with my jiujitsu and the self help portions are also trite. Joe Rogan is one of the examples of "habit." Ick. I just want to vomit. I don't know who most of these people are otherwise and I don't care. This is so niche. Now, to find a book that will actually help with both improving my life and jiujitsu skills....and not the history of unknown practitioners and their websites and podcasts...wait---there we go- I will just go the source of this dudes niche obsession. Lol
I think we are all looking for that skill or craft that leads us to that mental mastery of our lives and as a short time practitioner of jiu jitsu this book was able to provide me the road map to that mastery through those individuals who have already traveled that path. It’s not a gimmick and as the author demonstrates through his interviews and stories, following the path of jiu jitsu is long and arduous…but at the same time empowering and enlightening.
