nice summary

I'm very out of shape and aware of it. I've been looking at various books and videos to break my do nothing routine without overwhelming me. This summarized well the basic exercises that my PT had me do, except it explained why and the benefit. Good recapping of each exercise. Good picture, a little better to see the details on the phone or fire versus the kindle. Recommending this to anyone wanting to start to get back in shape and/or looking for core exercises to do the rest of their life. 5 stars for the content (avoid if typos bother you).

Owner’s Manual for a Human Body

The author didn’t have to tell us this was self published and it really could have used an editor, but typos aside, this is a great little book. Full of easy exercises that can improve your quality of life immediately.

Concise easy to read stretches with illustrations

Simple to follow stretches written by a PT. I am going to create a chart and do these to keep my body in better condition. A print off with all would be a nice bonus!

A great little book!

I am happy to have found this book - the exercises are well explained with photos, and cover what I need. My only comment is that a simple table listing the exercises would have been useful but I will prepare that myself based on the program I want to follow.

I don't think the description of this book does a great job of telling you who it is for. Here it is, from the beginning of the book: "injured, post operative, deconditioned patients who need guidance and motivation to recover lost function."

The description on Amazon wants you to think this a general minimal fitness program for the general populace. It isn't. As a sixty year old with a myriad of little nagging problems from decades of life and working out, there are a handful of things here I can use. Trying to do them all? My estimate is that if you did not just the core ten, but the entire 26 exercises, it would take you fifty minutes. Should I ditch my routine to spend fifty minutes four times a week doing prehab? No.

If you're twenty five and doing a balanced program of some sort, or just generally healthy, this is the next best thing to a waste of time. If you're actually in the target audience and have been up to now uninterested in exercise, are you really going to wade through a bunch of text and some pictures and buy some bands and figure this out? I doubt it.

This isn't a terrible book. If you've got a nagging issue, and the motivation to tackle the exercises in the area that's bothering you, this is a good place to start. Give it a try. But a general fitness program it is not.

I have been trying to improve my fitness and have so many aches and pains in addition to fibromyalgia that I struggle finding an activity that I can do consistently. My roundabout journey has led me to the idea of physical therapy in order to improve the basics so I have started reading a few different books on the subject. This one is short and sweet but the author drew me in right away with his first topic of the hips which are one of my main problem areas.

I plan to update my review after at least a few weeks of these exercises but they all seem quite doable while watching tv before bed. I do have to purchase a few tools but all of them are for exercises for body parts that I have ongoing issues with so it’s a small investment, about $30 for all the equipment he discusses in the book.

Simple and accurate

Over the years, I have had the privilege of sending many patients to Physical Therapists like Daniel Philpot. As a group, they are simply wonderful and very dedicated to helping people make progress after various injuries. The feedback I usually get from the patients, many of whom are golfing buddies, is always positive. When one of our local PT specialists relocated to Augusta, GA, there was grieving in our clubhouse.
That said, Mr. Philpot has given a straightforward, accurate and understandable dissertation that should be listened to. I am going to begin incorporating three or four of these into each workout and recommend that others do as well. You will be thankful if you do.

Tremendously concise and helpful book. I took two pages of notes.

Essentially the author says that exercise is medicine, and since orthopaedic imbalances are universal, the treatment is also.

These exercises are like vitamins that stop pain.

The ten areas are hip strength, hip flexibility, hands, feet, core, shoulders strength, shoulders flexibility, posture, neck, and hamstrings.

With an exercise band and a hand grip they can all be performed easily by anyone with enormous bang for your buck in terms of pain relief and long term health.

Incredible good value book, written in a warm, homespun style, with no unnecessary words.

In truth, there are ten categories or parts of the body that he addresses, and within each of those there are often at least three exercises. The information is solid and none of the exercises are terribly difficult, but if you repeat them with his recommended number of reps, it can be somewhat challenging. Many of them can be done on the floor while watching TV, or a few sporadically throughout the day to keep the body moving. I found it reassuring that many of his exercises are a regular part of a good yoga practice.

Wow

The best techniques for those of us who are out of shape. I tried this for two weeks and the results are incredible. I’ve begun sleeping better and have loss my urge to over eat. Starting a new high fiber diet, to accompany these exercises. With a little more work, more resistance too.

Definitely on to something!

Easy exercises to use as preventative medicine. Think of it as taking vitamins, if you're malnourished you will get sick. You're body will break down but if the right measures are taken, you can mitigate the damage and recovery time!

Physical Therapists are WONDERFUL! SO I look forward to putting into practise the instructions in this short but well-explained book.

I want to update review when I have done the movements consistently for a couple months or so. Until then: practice makes perfect ...

Good descriptions with one or two pictures of each exercise. I was quite surprised at how little I was using some of the muscles targeted in these exercises. I believe this will help my overall fitness!

Useful info. I’ve been thinking more about aging and mobility, with focus on units of work and body flexibility. Plenty of expertise, but writing style is like someone explaining how to cook their favorite recipe. Friendly, and like a conversation, but not literary in any sense.

Informative and to the point

The Author does a good job of getting right to the content that attracted me to the book. The clearly explained exercise guides are also divided by body part, so it’s conducive for writing out and organizing the program as you read.
