Ancient vampire Andrew escaped his tropical island exile with his beloved human sailor, Edmund. They’ve now returned to Andrew’s home in nineteenth-century New Orleans and must navigate not only their developing relationship—and equally haunted pasts—but also a hungry coven of vampires Andrew used to call friends.
Desperate to stay by Andrew’s side forever, Edmund examines the impressive coven library in search of an Elder, the only creature capable of turning Edmund. Although missing for centuries, Andrew believes an Elder must still survive somewhere; they just have to find him.
The search is put on hold when Edmund receives word that his mother is ill in London, and the lovers set off on an oceanic journey surrounded by new friends and old enemies. When things go terribly wrong, Edmund’s fragile human life hangs in the balance, and an Elder must be found or Andrew will be alone forever.
Bestselling romance author. Green witch. Feminist. Pro-choice. Anti-censorship. Timothee Chalamet freak. Horror movie aficionado. Vampire mermaid in a past life.
Sara Dobie Bauer somehow survived her party-hard college years at Ohio University to earn a creative writing degree. She lives with her precious Pit Bull in Northeast Ohio, although she’d really like to live in a Tim Burton film.
The story continues. Andrew and Edmund are in New Orleans revelling in the decadence they find there. While they are both perfectly at home they find themselves with a mission. They need to find an Elder but then Edmund receives news from home and reaching England becomes their first priority.
Despite not particularly liking either Andrew or Edmund I find myself totally engrossed in their story.
This was another quick and engaging installment in this ongoing historical, paranormal, M/M serial. Andrew and Edmund are back on dry land and spending their time in New Orleans. With the help of Felipe and Michelle, Edmund is doing research on the whereabouts of the Elder. We also meet a few other new characters (Gabriel, Danys, and May). I am not sure I was a complete fan of the M/M/M scene between Edmund, Gabriel, and Danys. It was certainly hot but seemed out of character for Andrew to be OK with that especially since he said he wouldn't let another man touch Edmund in the earlier book. Last, we are again left with a pretty huge cliffhanger, and I can't wait to see what happens next for this intriguing cast of characters.
I didn’t know Sara Dobie Bauer could be that cruel because I need the third book like NOW! 😂😭 Again, she has impressed and charmed me with a masterfully crafted world and meticulously realistic MCs. If you haven’t read my review for her first book “Escaping Exile”, now is the time to go and read because I freaking loved this book. 😁 And I freaking loved this second book too. 😍
After they escaped the godawful island of cannibals, Andrew and Edmund are now back in New Orleans where sex, depravity and hedonism is everywhere like a siren temptation. Edmund loves Andrew and Andrew loves Edmund more than the gift of eternity itself. So now it’s their ultimate goal to find an Elder who can turn Edmund into an immortal like Andrew so that they can be with each other for eternity. But when was true love easy? It’s certainly not the case here. Edmund is getting frustrated and restless after fruitless effort of so many months of trying to find an Elder and Andrew is trying to come to terms with the fact that Edmund can possibly have bigger inner demons and monsters than him. And when they finally got a clue to where an Elder might be, an unfortunate letter has arrived to New Orleans and they have to shift their way to Edmund’s homeland England. But the sea is the most gentle and deadliest assassin and Edmund is now at the edge of peril to a bottomless abyss. It’s now or never! 😱 The only solution is to become an immortal or perish for eternity. Now it’s the race against time to see whether these two lovers will make it or not.
I loooooved and adored the depraved, immoral and hedonistic setting of 19th century New Orleans. 😌 And it was very satisfying and lovely to see the blossoming of a deeper relationship between Andrew and Edmund. And needless to say, the smut was sizzling darling! 🔥 Comparing with the first book, there isn’t that sucker punch excitement and adventure but still, I loved the relationship development between these two MCs. And you sadistic Miss Bauer, the last chapters wrenched my heart so hard and made me cry. 😭 My sweet, wild and free Edmund .. how he had to suffer that injury, it just broke my heart. 💔 But the ending was very hopeful and I will be an optimist and believe that Miss Bauer will have a mercy for us, puny readers, in the finale of this amazing trilogy. So in summary, chop chop girl! 😂 Drop everything and write that third book because I swear to God, I’m going to nag and stalk you until I get that HEA. 🤣 If you want an unconventional, refreshing and a unique vampire love story, look no further because you have come to the right place.
4.5 I am and I will always be at your mercy Edmund stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

The first part of Escaping Solitude, Sara Dobie Bauer’s sequel to Escaping Exile, is full of wonderful descriptions of Andrew fully re-embracing his hedonistic and luxurious life. He’s celebrating his freedom, yay, but mostly he’s reveling in his complete and utter love for Edmund! The way these two men come together, and what they do for each other, both frantic and restorative - is spectacular.
Andrew’s return to his beloved New Orleans is delightful. With all the sights, scents, and sounds, plus the colorful and creative characters. Ms. Bauer paints a descriptive picture of what Andrew’s city is like in the 1800s.
Between the debauched parties, orgies in Andrew’s coven, time spent in a favored whore house, and just enjoying what New Orleans has to offer, both vampires and humans alike partake in the decadence.
Facing the prospect of Edmund’s mortality isn’t something either man is willing to consider, not when there’s something that can be done about it. So, Edmund sets his brilliant mind on finding a way to ensure they’ll be together forever.
Once they determine they need to find an Elder, an ancient vampire with the abilities to turn Edmund into an immortal vampire, they set off on an ocean voyage; both to find the Elder, and to visit Edmund’s sick mother in England.
The ending of Escaping Solitude is quite thrilling (yes, it ends on a cliffhanger). Not to spoil anything here, but I can’t wait to see what the Elder is like! Plus, Edmund’s mother and her reaction to the group that turns up to visit her on her sick bed... is sure to be fantastic.
Sara Dobie Bauer’s writing style is thoroughly enjoyable. Her descriptions are lush, and I love how this story is told from Andrew’s point-of-view and in the present-tense. His reactions and emotions come across clearly. An intimate, very well done look into Andrew’s character, it’s easy to feel his passion and desire, along with his every worry.
Fast paced and exciting, I can’t wait for the third and final episode in this wonderful must-read, The Escape Trilogy!
a copy of Escaping Solitude was provided by the author for the purpose of my honest review
Erotic and vividly written... but also much more than that.... every move I saw clearly, every touch and moan I felt and was electrifying. I was in a cocoon with them... Andrew loves Edmund deeply and can’t stand the feeling ever being separated from him. They have to find an ‘Elder’ so they will be for ever together.
What if he can’t keep himself restrained from Edmund’s delicious tempting neck... Edmund knows precisely what Andrew need.
- I tell him I love him. He tickles my ear with his fingertips. “Love you more.”
The way Edmund is revealed before my eyes is stunning... I devoured him... I loved him more every minute... and goshh I was not the only one.
Beside the quite dark environments it had highly romantic parts... it made me smolder for more... the melancholic sensuality was... rapturous.
“Jesus,” he whispers. “I feel like a prime cut of meat.”
It’s just written in a way my heart loves... sensual, humorous, dark, needy, erotic and romantic. Beautifully developed side characters working beside the stunning personalities of Edmund and Andrew.. I cried my eyes out... it was so emotional! Magnificent done... goosebumps!!
I loved this ‘livre noir’ immensely.
Highly recommended
Thank goodness I have already the next, as well the last installment because I simply can’t wait.
** I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review**
The author was kind enough to give me both the first and second in this series in exchange for reviews. I did not really care for the first one and was hoping this would be better. I did not like this one either. I dislike writing negative reviews but this rather short book was a chore to get through. Forgive any errors or typos, but I stayed up late to finally finish it so I could just be done with it and move on. As I explore what I disliked, I do want to emphasize that this is all personal preference. This is a well-written book. I just found it... very boring.
What I liked: Pacing- for how short this is, there is a lot of information and characters packed into it. However, nothing felt jammed in or rushed. The author is excellent at hitting the beats all the way through.
What I didn’t like as much: Vampires- I was excited by Andrew’s monstrous nature in the first book. He looked at humans as livestock and I was under the impression all vampires were as such. I was very disappointed to find that all the vampires are actually just sexual, orgy loving immortals with no weaknesses at all. Orgies are fine but wouldn’t it get boring? Don’t boo-hoo about being a beast when all you want to do is get it on in your silk and taffeta. Also, why do they all freak out at a broken bone?
Andrew: I don’t hate the POV protagonist I just saw no redeeming qualities at all. I mentioned in the first review that an additional POV would allow for the reader to see what Edmund sees and place Andrew in a better light. However, in this book I think the other voice would have given me a break from him. All he thinks about is Edmund. Edmund Edmund Edmund. He has no hopes or dreams or desires beyond everything wonderful and special about Edmund and it got old really fast.
Edmund- he can do anything and everyone loves and adores him but why? WHYYYYYYY? Why is he great? I don’t get it. I don’t really see him being great just characters laughing at his jokes or begging to sleep with him. It was hammered into the reader over and over that Edmund is the best ever without offering anything to substantiate it. Again, that additional POV would have really helped.
Historical?- I had no idea when this story took place. It may have been mentioned, but there was nothing to pinpoint this in history. That is all fine and I’ve certainly read and enjoyed books that float in a non-history space before, but this lack of a concrete space meant I had no interesting world to pay attention to and was just stuck with the cardboard characters. Furthermore, small things would just pull me out of the story constantly. Edmund doesn’t speak French even though he is a naturalist from English Aristocracy? But he does speak Latin? He doesn’t know what chat noir could possibly mean? Really? Also please use lube pleaaaase. Assholes aren’t vaginas and abusing them so terribly isn’t sexy.
There is more I don’t like, but I don’t want to harp. At least this one didn’t have a village of stereotypical POC cannibals just for the main character to kill. I will not be continuing and am glad to delete this off my kindle.
This was a massive disappointment! The vast majority of this story consisted of nothing but repetitive filler material, Andrew served no purpose other than being the narrator, and characters like Felipe and Michelle (who had been badasses in the first book) acted like overly dramatic, helpless children instead of vampires who are hundreds of years old.
The only part I liked is when the author added specific elements to Edmund's behavior that made it seem like he had ADHD. I liked the way the author portrayed it and how Edmund explained the situation to Andrew. But that was a very small part of the story.
I can't believe how boring this was! Edmund and Andrew spend most of the story lazing around and living self-indulgent lives. There was also way too much sex. I know the whole vampires-have-non-stop-orgies is a common trope but having that be the reality in this book was very boring. Not to mention that I have zero interest in reading about random characters having sex and I especially don't want to read about Edmund having sex with random characters while Andrew watches. If that had been hinted at in the story summary I could have decided if I was interested in that or not but the author just shoves it into story with no warning - not once, but twice!
Also - it's ridiculous that these vampires a) spend all their time having orgies and b) they obey Michelle's orders to not kill humans. Unlike in the first book, Michelle seems like a random rich lady. She isn't intimidating and there's no explanation for why people respect or obey her - they just do. I hate it when authors neuter vampires like this and the lack of this censoring is what I liked in the first book. But in this book, the vampires are just horny, rich people who like drinking people's blood. If you think of the blood drinking as a representation for drug use then the vampires were basically just having non-stop parties. Wouldn't they get bored? Don't the vampires have other things to do, like running businesses or involving themselves in politics and other things? The whole thing was boring and dumb.
Adding to the boredom is that being stuck in Andrew's POV was a major miss for this book because the author had no idea what to do with Andrew. Everything revolved around Edmund and the few important developments that happened were all connected to Edmund, not Andrew. It felt like Andrew was just the walking/talking narrator who was delivering the story information to readers. What an odd and boring choice!
Then there's the author's ridiculous decision to portray Michelle, Felipe and Andrew as overly emotional, overly dramatic, pathetic people while Edmund is a Gary Stu - always perfectly composed, remains in control at all times, always finds the right answers and always saves the day. Edmund being Andrew's equal worked really well in the first book because Andrew's vampire tendencies would have put him above Edmund otherwise. When he had to deal with Michelle, it was an intense situation because you could tell that Edmund was doing his best but Michelle was so intimidating that it took everything he had to make her respect him.
But in this book, the author took all of Andrew, Michelle and Felipe's powerful abilities and strong personality traits away while giving Edmund even more abilities than he had in the first book, which turned the guy into a Gary Stu. I loved Edmund in the first book but in this book, I got irritated with him because the story was a constant Edmund-Is-The-Hero Show and I got bored. Not to mention that Michelle and Felipe's presence in this story was as pointless as Andrew's was. Edmund was the only one doing important things in the story while the rest of the group did nothing except freak out when Edmund got injured.
Here's a perfect example of why this story sucked: near the end of the story, . It was absurd.
Oh, and following the scene from above, Edmund . I can't believe this mess was written by the same author who wrote the first one.
Lastly - the author clearly gave up on trying to achieve even a minimal amount of historical accuracy in this installment. I didn't mind it in the previous book because the inaccuracies weren't so bad that they were distracting and the majority of action takes place on a deserted island. But in this book, the MCs modern dialog becomes even more modern and it felt like a stage play where actors are wearing old timey clothes but they're putting on a contemporary performance. Absolutely nothing was historically accurate except for the clothes and because this book takes place in 1800s New Orleans, this was irritating.
The only important parts of the story were a tiny section in the middle where and then the last page where the group . The book ends up on a cliffhanger and I have the third one so I'm going to check it out but I'm not too hopeful.
This book continues the exciting adventures of Andrew, an ancient vampire, and his beloved, Edmund, a human sailor who was stranded on the island where Andrew was sent for solitary confinement in Escaping Exile.
They are now back in New Orleans in the 19th century and are a committed couple, but they have to deal with the coven of vampires Andrew once called friends. Michelle, the coven leader who banished Andrew to the island, and then rescued him when his punishment was complete, has befriended them. She points them to the necessary research when Edmund reveals he wants to spend eternity with Andrew. Since research is right up Edmund’s alley, he spends hours and days in Michelle’s extensive library trying to piece together enough information to locate an Elder, the only creature capable of turning Edmund. None have been seen for centuries, but Edmund persists in his research and believes he knows where to look—even though the area is underwater.
Deciding to combine the ocean search with a trip to England to visit his ailing mother, they set out with Michelle on her ship, but an accident turns all their plans upside down and makes the race to find the Elder a matter of life and death.
I love these characters! Sara Dobie Bauer has created a unique twist on vampires at the same time as giving us impossibly wonderful men, or vampires, as the case may be. The adventure is exciting, the pace fast, and the ending—oh my! Let’s just say it’s fortunate that book three will be available in a few months. This is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. In fact, this series is one of the best I’ve read in a long time. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys vampires, MM romance, and a bit of 19th century in their stories.
Disclaimer: This review is my honest opinion, although I do work for the publisher, so I want to be upfront about that.
Escaping Solitude is the second book in Sara Dobie Bauer’s Escape trilogy. In the first story, Escaping Exile, we meet Andrew while he is stranded on the island and as he encounters Edmund and the two fall for one another. From a plot standpoint, you could probably jump in here without having read the first book, as the essential information is conveyed at the start of this book. But from a character standpoint, I do think reading the first story helps to flesh these guys out, particularly Edmund, who is a pretty atypical member of the gentry.
After that last book ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, I think the start of this one is a little slow as the guys mostly are exploring New Orleans. I did like seeing the city from Andrew’s POV, but it is mostly watching them indulge in some decadence (including a threesome for Edmund with Andrew watching) and meeting the local vampires (who are also a pretty decadent, sex-focused bunch). But things do pick up fairly quickly and by the time we reach the guys’ ocean journey, the book has a lot of excitement and intensity (as well as another cliffhanger). I think Bauer is doing a nice job with the pacing here for the trilogy, giving each story as distinct focus and its own exciting elements, but also carrying over the larger series story across all three. These are short novels and Bauer manages to get the story across well in a relatively small number of pages.
The first book was fun and a fast read, although with very little character development, but still enjoyable.
This one was just messy: the author tried some character development with Edmund, but given the shortness of the novel, it didn't really come through. It introduced some character traits, but they didn't really go anywhere. Edmund was liked by everyone, but for the life of me, I couldn't figure out what was so special about him. Andrew's personality was reduced to his obsession with Edmund, which just wasn't doing it for me. The sex was just meh, and the lack of lubrication made me wince every time.
I don't think I'll be continuing on with this series.

REVIEW: 3.5 stars--ESCAPING SOLITUDE is the second instalment in Sara Dobie Bauer’s historical ESCAPE paranormal, MM, erotic romance trilogy focusing on formerly exiled vampire Andrew, and twenty-eight year old, British naturalist Edmund. ESCAPING SOLITUDE should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately following the events of book one-Escaping Exile.
NOTE: ESCAPING EXILE contains M/M and M/M/M/ sexual situations that may not be suitable for all readers.
Told from first person point of view (Andrew) ESCAPING SOLITUDE follows Andrew and Edmund as they begin their life together in Andrew’s hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana. No longer in exile Andrew is welcomed backed with open arms but Edmund’s presence is like a beacon to other vampires including Felipe, the consort to the vampire who sent Andrew into exile. Enamored with Michelle’s library of vampire lore, Edmund discovers the existence and whereabouts of an Elder vampire, a vampire with the ability to give Edmund a chance at forever with the man that he loves. What ensues is the growing relationship and love between Edmund and Andrew, and the potential fall-out as an accident threatens to end Edmunds life.
ESCAPING SOLITUDE is another quick and easy read; an erotic romance between vampire and human, with the possibility of a happily ever after. We are introduced to female vampire Michelle, and her consort Felipe, as well as the local boy-toys Gabriel and Danys, and their Irish madam May.
The world building continues to focus on Andrew and Edmund’s building relationship, their time together revealing a manic and inquisitive side of Andrew’s human lover, as well as the search for a vampire Elder. The premise is engaging; the romance is passionate and erotic without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text; the characters are colorful and charismatic. ESCAPING SOLITUDE ends on a cliff-hanger-you have been warned.
Sara Dobie Bauer’s the Escape Trilogy is the fresh breeze vampire romance novels needed for a long time.
Escaping Exile is the first part in which we get acquainted with Andrew, a sexy ancient vampire who had been exiled to an almost deserted island (if we don’t count the cannibals!) after one kill too many. After a storm brings to his shore a sailor with a pretty face and unpredictable temper the things become more end more intriguing every day…
The plot of Escaping Exile was enjoyable, well-structured and with a bit of a twist. However, the thing that drew me in were the characters and I couldn’t NOT jump on the second part to see what happens with them.
Escaping Solitude takes us to a vampire coven in New Orleans (ah, where else!). Sara Dobie Bauer did a great job in recreating the atmosphere of this hot and dark city, with all its sights and scents and sounds, thus enhancing the reading experience.
The second part is even more character driven than the first and it was great getting to know Andrew and Edmund more while they explore and fall deeper into each other. I have to confess Edmund is my favorite of the two – with his free spirit and wisdom, hunger for knowledge and pleasure, the combination of light and darkness within him. No wonder Andrew is so stricken and reaches heights of devotion that he hadn’t realized he’d be capable of.
The secondary characters, Felipe and Michelle are thrilling in their own way and not only add to the vivid picture the novel is painting but are in fact active participants in the plot.
The Escape Trilogy is a must read for every fan of vampires – it is fascinating, sensual and intriguing and actually the best vampire novel I’ve read since Ann Rice.
Even if you are not a fan of vampires, give it a try because the writing style and the characterization are fantastic. I promise you’ll have a lot of fun!
Ok. So I’m really liking this series but I am a little P.O.’ed right now. I HATE cliffhangers and this is a huge one. Oh my gah. But I love these characters. Well, Felipe not so much. He’s a bit of an ass. But I love how Edmund and Andrew have changed each other. They are still a bit wild and crazy. But Andrew has mellowed so much for Edmund. And they’ve both found what they are looking for in each other. The only problem is, will Edmund make it long enough to find the Elder they’ve been looking for before Edmund dies. The trip to England to visit his ailing mother had a quick change, when Edmund ended up with a severe injury trying to save Felipe. His injury is getting worse and they all know he may soon die if they can’t find an Elder to give him immortality. And Andrew refuses to live without Edmund. So, it’s good but nail biting because you want these two to stay together with all they’ve been through. Edmund is so good for Andrew. And vice versa. I just hope what they’re looking for is what they find. Won’t know until book 3.
Andrew and Edmund are off their island and returned to New Orleans for some shopping, some debauchery, and some research into finding an "elder" vampire to turn Edmund. There are sexcapades and hijinks and adventures, and it all moves fast.
Andrew is much more sane this time around and his devotion to Edmund is off the charts. Honestly I think I missed his crazy a little, but he makes up for it with completely over-the-top adoration for his sailor. Edmund is fleshed out a little better this go-round and, honestly, he's just too adorable for words. You can completely understand Andrew's infatuation. We get to see the sailor do some actual sailing, even.
And that ending! Argh! I need the last book, like, yesterday.
I'd rec this for anyone who loves them some vampire lovin'. But watch that last step, it's a doozy!
I received this book by the author and this is my honest opinion. This is the second instalment of following Andrew the vampire and Edmund and there journey after escaping from the island of man eating cannibals were Andrew got sent through punishment and Edmund through a shipwreck. This is there tale of trying to find the elder who can grant them both the possibility of forever through turning Edmund into a vampire. This was a good carry on from the first, I enjoyed reading about these characters again and getting a closer look into Edmunds past. Looking forward to the last book
When I read Sara’s books or short stories, I feel like I should stop writing immediately. She just blows everything I do out of the water. Take that compliment, missy. The way she writes…it’s weightless. The second part of the series wasn’t super high on emotion like other books I’ve read recently, but it let me dive into a whole other world. And it didn’t let me out until my eyelids grew heavy and my blinks slowed. I am amazed at the amount of detail and heart and soul I can spot in this book. But also, the connection between Andrew and Edmund is one of a kind. I love seeing how Andrew gets jealous, adore how his possessive side scratches the surface even though we do see some M/M/M action in this installment *spoiler*
And what a cliffhanger, waiting for January will be pure torture. Lucky for me, Ms. Sara also posts free vamp smut in her facebook group. Come and join us ;)
Escaping Solitude starts pretty much where Escaping Exile left off. Escaping Solitude is also just a little bit longer, but not by much. Regardless of it's length, the story isn't lacking... The jury's still out though on whether or not I'd rather just have one long book than these fairly short stories though... can you say cliff hanger?!?
The setting was a lot different in Escaping Solitude, which should mean that Edmund is safe, but Andrew still considers him vulnerable - and will until he's turned. Having Edmund spend time with other vampires isn't ideal, but the coven holds important resources that they need to find an Elder.
Readers learn more about Andrew and his "family" in Escaping Solitude. We also learn about Edmund's family and even though Andrew doesn't understand Edmund's loyalty to his mother, he finds a way to get him to his mother when she falls ill.
The book description pretty much covers the rest... Did I mention that this book ends in a cliff hanger? Trust me, it's worth mentioning again. I should probably suggest that you just wait until all three books are released before starting the Escape Trilogy, but if you're like me and just can't wait... consider yourself warned...
I received Escaping Solitude in exchange for a fair and honest review.
How disappointing. This one was ridiculousness on steroids, I should’ve have expected it. This read like a bad historical soap opera, but with a pussy vampire. Who is supposed to be a top/dominant in their newfound relationship. But they act as if they’ve been together for centuries. With all those cutesy petnames, like ‘My Sailor’ or ‘My Darling’. I have a mild headache from all the eye rolling that occurred.
I think I should change the rating for the first novella to a lower rating now and not continuing to book 3.
I read book 1 in this series, Escaping Exile, a while back and was pretty much shocked that a paranormal, M/M, erotic, historical romance existed. I’d never heard of such a thing! And the fact that all of those things worked well together...well, that was just a big bonus! Like it’s predecessor, Escaping Solitude is a category-bending read with characters that are...interesting, to say the least. This installment of the series finds vampire Andrew back in civilization (New Orleans) with his human lover, Edmund, after their rescue from the island. Together, they set about looking for an Elder so that Edmund can be turned.
Here’s what I liked: 1. The pacing is very swift. I like that story wasn’t too long and there weren’t a lot of scenes that didn’t seem important to the overall story.
2. I still find anti-hero Andrew to be endlessly fascinating, and I can’t say for sure, but I have a feeling Edmund is a sociopath and will only become more dangerous once he’s turned into a vampire. I sense BIG drama on the horizon there, and I for one am ALL FOR IT.
Now, sadly, there were a few things that bugged me about this one. Nothing so terrible that I need to rant, or even bad enough to make me stop reading the series. But stuff I feel compelled to mention nonetheless:
1. The M/M/M scene was sufficiently spicy for lovers of romantic erotica, but I found it a little out of character that Andrew, a super-possessive vampire, would let his mate have sex with two other men while he just watched.
2. This story felt very much like a bridge book to link the action of the first book to the action that will happen in the next book. Nothing too exciting happened in this one. I almost would’ve rather seen this book combined with the last one so that this series was a duology, as opposed to a trilogy.
3. Everyone who comes in contact with Edmund seems to adore him. I’m not entirely sure why. He’s gorgeous...OK. But is that enough to make everyone fall in lust/love with him at first sight? It seems a little far fetched.
But, all that said, this is still an interesting series that’s chock-full of interesting characters, and I’m SURE that the next installment will bring big changes for Andrew and Edmund--and I’ll be right there, waiting eagerly to read about those changes.
Full disclosure: We received an ARC from the author, free of charge.

The first book in this trilogy was wonderful. And you really need to read it first before diving into this one. It gave a feel for how these characters are monsters in their own right and it showed (at least in part) why Andrew had been exiled to the tropical island. It is where Andrew saves and falls in love with Edmund and was packed with action and adventure.
This book, the second in the trilogy... OMG! I wasn't expecting anything like this story, let me tell you!!!
First I will tell you what I was expecting...
I thought that it would again be full of adventure and action. I thought that it would be super erotic with lots of steamy vampire hotness. I thought that the characters might get into some conflict with the coven that exiled him in the first place and I thought that it might find some resolution or perhaps another reason for the conflict to begin with. Let me tell you now, That's. Not. This. Story!
What I discovered...
There was plenty of action and adventure as Andrew and Edmund explored the steamy streets of NOLA with its sins and decadence. There was soooo much vampire sexiness happening and there was certainly some conflict in the coven. But, what I didn't expect to find was the depth that the author gave these characters and the feels that came with that. I was even seen shedding a tear or two and I really wasn't expecting to cry while reading this story. I wasn't expecting the feeling of dread because I just knew that something was going to happen. I mean, something always happens right? But I seriously felt DREAD! I didn't think I would feel that strongly about these guys but the author did such an excellent job of writing them that I connected with them on a deep level. I was so invested in them and I still am.
I'll warn you that this book ends with a cliff-hanger and I personally love them but I understand that some people will want to have the whole series before they start. I find something delicious about the anticipation, much like I imagine people that watch soap operas feel. I know that once the final book in the trilogy is ready I will feel like it's my birthday and Christmas all rolled into one!
I HIGHLY recommend this series! Do yourself a favor if you love paranormal MM, historical, action/adventure and romance and get this trilogy!
This is the second book in the Escape Trilogy and I would definitely recommend reading the first prior to this book. For one, you need the background on the two MC's. For two, it's absolutely amazing in it's own right.
Vampire Andrew was exiled to an island for four years after past transgressions caught up with him. Edmund, an English sailor and scientist, was shipwrecked on the island and rescued by Andrew. In this continuation, Edmund and Andrew have been returned to New Orleans and are becoming acclimated again to real life.
Finding himself living in a house teeming with vampires, Edmund is desperate to find his Elder to turn him so that he can be with Andrew for eternity. We learn more of Edmund's past and his love for fighting in this book, and his quest for knowledge as he spends his days and nights in the vampire's library researching his Elder. He's come a long way and his love for Andrew has deepened and will be tested.
Andrew was surly and dominant in the last book and I loved how his character was so much more patient and understanding and loving in this sequel. It was almost like the MC's switched roles and this time it was Andrew who was fascinated by Edmund. Andrew watched over Edmund and cherished him. Edmund was as adventurous as ever, while still holding to the tie that bound him to his love.
"You made me angry. You made me afraid. That doesn't mean you lost my love and have to earn it back. I'll never stop loving you, no matter what you do." I take his wet face in my hands. "Do you understand that?"
I am not a lover of historical romance, but the creative air that this book employs is so refreshing and the unique cast of characters and hot vampires overpowers the sense of being a period piece.
I can't even give the quality of writing the credit it deserves. Even if the story was nonsense, Sara Dobie Bauer's eloquent writing would be worth the read.
I cannot wait to read the last installment. Do yourself a favor and get caught up before it's out.

I was gifted my copy of this book, direct from the author, that I write a review was not required.
Andrew takes Edmund back to civilization, to his home in New Orleans. Andrew's coven has some members who wish to harm Edmund, to take him away from Andrew and Andrew will not have it. To turn Edmund, Andrew needs an Elder so Edmund is let lose in the coven's library to find him. Then Andrew is called home to England, so the trip to find the Elder is put on hold. That is, til a terrible accident on board.
Again, written only from Andrew's point of view, in the first person/present tense, same as book one. Knowing this going in, made it easier to overlook that personal quirk that I don't much care for books written as such.
And of COURSE I wanted to hear from Edmund! There were several keys points along the way that I really needed to hear what he was thinking.
Andrew introduces Edmund to some of his more baser pleasures, several of them, in the club with the red door, and oh that was such a surprise cos I did not see that one coming at me! So bloody hot! He also introduces Edmund to his coven's parties. But rather than Andrew go all ALPHA-protect-what-is-mine, it's Edmund who goes all don't-touch-what-isn't-yours on Felix, the one who touches Edmund. Oh of course Andrew wanted to rip Felix' head off for that, but he left Edmund stake the claim of Andrew, rather than the other way round.
The trip home to England brought some more surprises, but also tragedy, when there is a storm.
And we're left hanging!
Cliff hanger, people, of the highest order! Not QUITE the one I was expecting, but still a massive one, that could still go either way! And I have to wait til Jan next year for the final part, and Lord is that gonna be a wait!!
So, ONLY, only because Edmund doesn't have his say, because I think if he had, this may well have been a 5 star review...
Monsters are not to be trusted with something so beautiful, and God, is Edmund ever beautiful.
Edmund (human) and Andrew (vampire), two men who love each other are finally back in civilization. Edmund hadn't been away for long, but for Andrew it had been four years.
“No longer am I a blood-soaked murderer. No longer is Edmund an underfed, filthy, exhausted mess with the beginnings of a beard. We’ve been reborn.”
The two flow wonderfully together and seem to be able to read each other with ease. I love how receptive they are to one another; how open they can be not only with each other but with others entering their relationship.
We learn about Edmunds past, who his family is and why he is so adventurous and enjoys a dangerous lifestyle.
“He is a wealthy man of leisure with callused hands and scars.”
I wasn’t to happy about 70% of the way into the story as a letter arrives with news I personally didn’t care for as it changed the course of everything. But, it was needed and thankfully another twist was thrown in.
“No, we have to go now. We have to go to England.”
The author never disappoints in her descriptions and how easily it is to just fall into the story. Edmund and Andrew are full of emotions, adventures, and at times comical relief and the two are truly a gift to enjoy.
I found myself hating and then loving Felipe.
“Felipe underestimated him immediately. He saw a gentle, pretty thing to be conquered, but it’s Edmund who does the conquering.”
Yes, this ends on a cliffhanger. Yes, one that makes you want to scream, but YES, the next part is coming. Sometimes you must wait for the good things, and in this case, I know the waiting will be well worth it.
I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion.

Escaping Solitude is the second novel in the Escape Trilogy. At last vampire Andrew has escaped his Island exile and has returned to New Orleans with his human lover Edmund. Determined to stay together forever the lovers search for an Elder; a vampire with the power to turn Edmund. However, when Edmund is seriously wounded their search becomes all the more desperate. If they don’t find an Elder in time then death will part them.
I really enjoyed book two in this series. The Nineteenth Century New Orleans setting was very well fleshed out and when reading I felt as though I really was walking the streets with them. The characters of both Andrew and Edmund are developed further and you can really see how they’ve grown since the first novel. Andrew’s love for Edmund has given him a more human edge. His feelings are intense and he is also terrified of somehow losing Edmund; either to another vampire or to death. Edmund has gained in confidence in their relationship and is just as certain in his love for Andrew. He’s unafraid of the other vampires in Andrew’s former home, and shows great courage when one in particular is especially interested in him.
The relationship and how it had developed since the first novel was my favourite part of Escaping Solitude. It began fuelled by desire on both sides initially but it has deepened and become so much more now. You can really feel how much they care for each other. I cannot wait to read the final book in the trilogy and find out how their story ends.

The moment I finished part one of the Escape Trilogy, Escaping Exile, I was already clamoring to the author that I needed part two right away. Of course, having completed part two, I'm begging for the conclusion immediately. While some middles of stories or trilogies drag, I enjoyed this story even more than the first one! Andrew and Edmund, and their relationship with each other, continue to delight.
Bauer strikes the perfect balance between erotica and excellent plotting. As a bonus, the secondary characters in this tale (both human and vampire) are intriguing and fleshed out in their own right. For a novella, the depth of the world-building is phenomenal, and I continue to enjoy Bauer's twist on the traditional vampire mythos.
Fair warning: This tale ends on an epic cliffhanger. Even though the advertisement for part 3 belays any fears immediately, picky readers might want to wait until December to read the full series all at once. You might be the lucky ones, actually. I'll just be over here pining away for more of Andrew and Edmund's epic romance until then.
I contemplated not giving this 5 stars because it ends on a TBC that this time really is a cliffhanger, there really is no way you can call it anything else. But I have faith that everything will be sorted out in the last book, also while the MCs are in mortal danger, they are together and still very much in love. But I couldn't mark it down for that in the end because I loved the story.
This is a continuation of Andrew and Edmund's story. They've arrived back in New Orleans and are settling into Andrew's old life at the coven.
I love the atmosphere that the author creates in these stories. It's gritty and feels authentically historical despite the presence of vampires.
Andrew is smitten with Edmund and his love is evident in every action. Both MCs traits could make them unredeemable characters but somehow the author makes them both endearing and loveable. I think the strength of their relationship is what does this, they are stronger and better together.
Despite the ending (and yeah, I really need that last book now!) I highly recommend this book.

This is a second book in this series and it is about Edmund and Andrew's life in New Orlean. It is scorching hot, lovely and FASCINATING. I loved it! Unfortunately it ends with a cliffhanger and I can't believe I will have to wait for book #3!!! Why??
This is not only a really nice love story, but also an interesting description of New Orlean .... and vampires' life . I was imagining something close to "Interview with the Vampire" :)
It is written in a way that I could almost "see and feel" everything. There was a little bit too much sex in my opinion, but who doesn't like some m/m sexy times? What is more important it wasn't predictable. I've never read a story (or watched a movie) with vampires being able to hibernate! Moreover, it was , sometimes conversations between MCs or with Filippe were simply hilarious:
"I can't picture You on a horse". "Strange, considering I ride You so often"
Pretty cool romance with a very annoying cliffhanger :( And I need Filippe's story, he seems to be interesting.
