4 great plot, more steam please stars

I am a big fan of Chasity Bowlin' HRs -- they tend to have all of the major items on my "good book" checklist: strong plot that keeps the reader interested; likeable/interesting characters; and steamy goodness. This book had 2.5/3 :)

I read this one out of order in the series because I finished The Vanishing of Lord Vale The Vanishing of Lord Vale (The Lost Lords Book 2) by Chasity Bowlin and really wanted to know what happened to Mary Mason, the adoptive sister of the H . There are 2 books between them, but I am not sure why because this book picks up right where Vanishing left off, so there was nothing at all in it that "spoiled" anything in my jumping ahead a little in the series.

Note that if you have not read book 2 in this series, the following will contain spoilers... When we last left Mary Mason, she had escaped the clutches of the nefarious gentleman who was responsible for ruining many lives by ordering the kidnappings of and later selling children, young ladies, and others at the request of his equally detestable "customers." In fleeing through the woods, Mary literally stumbled across a younger gentleman whose intentions are at first unclear; still in self-preservation mode, she attempts to escape him as well and ends up falling in the rough terrain and injuring her head, rendering her unconscious.

Lord Andrew Carnahan's, Earl of Wolverton, reputation is beyond repair. After being accused of viciously murdering his wife and found guilty in a (stacked) civil trial, he is destitute. While he considered giving up on more than a few occasions, his drive to prove his innocence has kept him going. When he encounters a slip of a young woman racing through the woods in scant clothing, he knows he is that much closer to proving his neighbor, Harrelson (the same man that has destroyed so many lives), is the man responsible for his wife's murder and the ruining of his good name. When the girl awakens, she can take him back to where she was held --- on Harrelson's property, and she may even be able to identify him directly as her kidnapper, or at least point the finger at those associated with him. Only when he discovers she is burning with fever, she may never awaken. And she is most certainly not a girl, but a woman to whom he has an immediate and inappropriate attraction.

When Mary awakens, she realizes she has been ministered to by the notorious wife murdering earl... yet she cannot reconcile his reputation and alleged brutal crime with the man who has tenderly cared for her and restored her to health. As she gets to know him, she realizes he has been a victim of the same man who has wronged her, her brother, and countless others. She also realizes she is falling in love with him. But regardless of whether he is innocent, there are too many insurmountable obstacles, including one no one saw coming, that they cannot possibly overcome.... right?

What I liked:
--- The story picked up right where it left off after book 2
--- Great plot with mystery/intrigue that made me read until the wee hours to see what happened
--- Very likeable characters, including revisiting of the mcs from The Vanishing of Lord Vale

What I didn't like as much:
--- Some suspension of belief around the main villain, but thankfully the author didn't drag out the discovery (meaning the mcs saw through the bs vs making it more angsty for angst sake which I do not care for)
--- VERY MINIMAL steamy goodness until the very end, and then just the once :( I need more!!

Overall, a strong story line that kept me glued to the pages to the end (though I would have liked a little more steamy goodness)!

Plot --- 4.5/5
Main Characters --- 4.5/5
Supporting Cast --- 4.5/5
Steam Level* --- 3/5
Violence --- nothing graphic
Language --- not egregious
POV --- 3rd

*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild; 2/5 - sensual but nothing descriptive; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere; 4/5 - yes please! ; 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all

Alex and Mary

I’ve been waiting for Mary’s story for quite some time. It did not disappoint. Mary’s ingenuity and fortitude served her well throughout the series. She was no milk and water miss waiting to be rescued. I love her.

Alex was just the honorable lord for her. As tragic as his circumstances turned out to be, he did not relinquish his honor. I was desperately turning pages to see Mary’s reunion with her brother. It was awesome.

I can’t wait to read more in this series!

The Mystery of Miss Mason
By Chasity Bowlin
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Mary Mason has been abducted and held captive by unknown men for even more unknown reasons. She has had to use every ounce of strength to escape what would have been an awful fate. While running away she has now met another man. A mysterious stranger, but she doesn't know if he is friendly or dangerous. Can he be trusted or will she just be a pawn in whatever game he might be playing.

Alexander Carnahan, Lord Wolverton, is a pariah in society, and a known murderer, but as he carries Mary's feverish, bleeding, and unconscious body back to Wolfhaven to care for her, he ends up recognizing that is more then just the key to the mystery of who murdered his late wife. She makes him feel something again. Something he thought long dead and that is hope.

As Mary recovers in his home, the truth slowly comes out. Their pasts are intertwined, the intrigues and mysteries of their lives are connected, and hide unspeakable horrors committed by common enemies. As they work hard to reunite Mary with her brother and to prove Alex's innocence, they grow closer and closer leaving their feelings exposed and only growing more complex and undeniable.

Chasity Bowlin writes and incredibly heartfealt and emotionally charged book. Sometimes I wanted to cry and other times I wanted to cheer the characters on. Both the main characters were very strong and the story was wonderful. This is the first book I have ever read from Ms. Bolwin and I can safely say it will not be the last.

Chasity Bowlin takes you on an intriguing ride bringing together a mystery, suspense and a romance all rolled into one. The heroine, Mary, looking for her brother, is abducted and held captive. While waiting in the woods, Alexander, Lord Wolverton runs into her and while trying to help her, she falls and becomes unconscious. What to do? He takes her to his estate to help her heal and the mystery begins. Two separate people, unexpectedly put together that find their lives entwined because of a mutual enemy and much, much more.
I have really enjoyed this series and the writing style of the author. With her wonderful characters, this tale pulled me in from the beginning and did not let go until the last page was turned! Such an unexpected plot with several twist and turns that brings out many emotions as Mary and Alex strive for justice.
Just amazing! Although part of a series this can be read as a standalone, but you will really want to read every book in the series!

This is now the second book of this author and this series, where SPOILER a couple that enjoys BDSM are the villains. Not only is this boring and uncreative, it is hurtful to the community. Only the villains use contraception - how evil. I also don't like the views regarding abortion expressed in this book, which seem very pro life without discussion. The hero condemning abortion in his thoughts without reflection really put me off. Also, he thinks about how he loves the innocence of the FMC and her obvious lack of sexual passion, not because he is asexual which would have been cool, but because he thinks it makes for good character. Thanks, I hate it. In one book I could have overlooked this as thoughtless, but getting these bigot views pressed on me in this second book I don't think it's coincidence. That there isn't one queer character in sight, fits the image. DNF at 45% and I will not read another book from this author.

Great addition to 'The Lost Lords' series.
At last, we discover what happened to Miss Mary Mason, adopted sister of Lord Vale, who was abducted in The Vanishing of Lord Vale.
Heroine resourceful, intelligent & such inner strength & the hero a little too honorable.
Little disappointed that Miss Mason's true linage was not uncovered.
Looking forward to Lord Ambros's journey next.

After being kidnapped from the streets of Bath while investigating her adoptive brother’s true origins, Mary Mason managed to escape what would surely have been an even worse nightmare. But no sooner has she managed to free herself than she crosses paths with a mysterious man who could yet prove just as dangerous. She has no idea if she can trust the titled gentleman with such a destroyed reputation or if he’s just using her in whatever scheme he’s embroiled in.

Alexander Carnahan, the Earl of Wolverton is known in the area for having murdered his wife in a most savage fashion, despite the fact that he’s innocent. He’s lost everything apart from his entailed estates and has devoted himself to discovering who actually murdered his late wife and clearing his name. When he finds and carries and unconscious and ill Mary Mason back to his house to see her restored to good health, he’s shocked to find himself caring about her beyond how she can help him unravel the mystery and stirs in him a long dead sense of hope.

I really enjoyed the mystery of the book and found the hero to be very charming in a terribly tragic sort of way. I loved that Mary stood up for charming in a terribly tragic sort of way. I loved that Mary stood up for herself and what she wanted in life and wasn’t cowed by her brother. Alexander and Mary’s relationship progressed rather slowly, but that was fitting given their situation. I did want a bit more punishment for the villains here, but this was a great listen and a lovely addition to this series.

I love Chasity Bowlin's style of creating stories and characters that call to the reader and you just can't stop reading until "the end". This story was full of lies, cheats, kidnappings, murders with kindness, romance, trust and love to round the tale out.

Alexander Carnahan, Lord Wolverton has spent the last year of his life trying to prove himself innocent of killing his wife and to get his fortune and good name returned to his estate. In one of his nightly searches, he discovers a young woman escaping from the man he suspects framed him for murder. Alex chases her, she falls and is injured - he takes her back to his home and nurses her back to health and finds her name to be Mary Mason and she was kidnapped on the main street of Bath and held prisoner a week ago. Over the time of her recovery, they get to know one another and begin to find they have feelings growing but thinks because she comes from humble beginnings and he is titled and he can't be with her when he thinks he can't be with her as he has been shunned by society and has lost all his wealth.

The mystery, danger lead them to even darker events that have been happening with kidnappings over many years. This book has everything I like in a book - intrigue, romance, action and great main and secondary characters. I highly recommend this book and it can be read as a stand alone but reading the series in order will familiarize you with characters that show up in the subsequent books.

Alexander Carnahan, Lord Wolverton is trying to clear his name he’s been accused of murdering his wife and his wealth has been turned over to her Uncle. While on a night of surveillance he discovers a ragged woman running for her life and he attempts to rescue her. Alex carries the unconscious Mary Mason back to his crumbling estate to care for her. All Mary knew was she needed to escape from her prison cell and when she encounters a mysterious stranger she doesn’t know what to think except he’s not taking her back to that hell hole she just escaped from. As the two become better acquainted they discover they have a mutual enemy and their lives are entwined beyond anything they ever thought possible. This story was full of mystery, intrigue, peril and romance as these two follow the trail of evidence to solve the mystery of her kidnapping and his wife’s murder. This is my honest opinions is resolved to build a school for ladies in after I voluntarily read a copy of this book that was provided to me with no requirements for a review.

5 STARS, HISTORICAL ROMANCE DRAMA

Book 5 gets 5 STARS from a much beloved Series: The Lost Lords. great BLURB is provided. Character development is very good & some characters are from previous Books. It is a well written interesting & fast paced storyline. Lots of drama created with the mystery of the woman running in just her shift in the middle of the night deep in the woods & hiding from the carriage that comes down the deserted road. With this starts our meeting of Mary to Alex.

Lord Wolverton, Alex is known as the murderer of his wife. A vicious awful one where his wife was only identified by her engagement ring & hair because her face had been brutalized beyond recognition; plus she was found by Alex on his property right outside the old Abby on his property.

Can Alex prove he didn't murder his wife, Helena? Does Mary remember why & where she was running from,? Then what does that have to do with 2 lonely people who just need love in their lives. What an adventure to discover the answers & some are shocking.

RECOMMEND

Chasity Bowlin has provided us with an intriguing mystery, murders and an unintended romance. Miss Mary Mason has come to Bathe to discover if her brother is the missing Lord Vale. They have grown up together in a household of cruel step parents and secrets. However, before she can find any information, she is kidnapped off the streets and help captive. She manages an escape and encounters an unknown man that rescues her and helps her recover from her injuries. As Mary recovers, she begins to uncover the truth of their lives; she finds that Lord Wolfverton, that rescued her, is as connected to this mystery and murders as they are. Will they be able to uncover the strange evil that haunts their lives and find romance in the process? This is one that holds your interest until the last page.

I love second chance love

Alex married and is accused.of.murdering his wife. He is an honorable man and you will call in love with him for sure. He is trying to find out who killed his wife and he stumbled upon a women fleeing for her life. She has been kidnapped and she escapes her kidnappers. Alex helps Mary to his home because she has a fever and he helps her get well. While they are together they start to fall in love. This book has suspense and I loved it. The characters are well written. Even the house keeper is a character that I despised but I could picture her in my mind so well. I love all of Mrs Bowlin books. She takes her time and gets everything right for a reader. All the excitement in a book the suspense the romance she is an excellent writer. Plus the editing is always excellent. Highly recommend this book

Sweet heat, longing and mystery- really good.

The fifth book in the Lost Lord series, this is the story of Mary and Lord Alexander, aka Wolverton. A dark mystery involving the death of Alex’s wife and the true identity of Mary’s brother brings the two together. Alex saves Mary from an ugly fate and the two form a friendship, which grows into a longing, while both strive to extricate Alex from his current situation.
The story has intrigue, danger, twists, and even moments of humor, thanks to a few interesting characters and a surly house maid. The romance that develops between the two characters is heated but sweet. I thoroughly enjoyed their story, and just love this series. I am looking forward to more and highly recommend it and the series.

***HOOPLA Audio***

MC's: Mary & Alexander "Alex"

FINALLY....we know what happened to Mary back in the second book. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Mary is a feisty woman who didn't cower when captured...but thought her way out of the situation. Not right away....but she kept her cool. When she finally escapes, and is almost seen doing so, she runs into Alex. Only she doesn't know who she can trust and runs from him, only to get hurt.

Like I mentioned in my review in book #4, The Resurrection of Lady Ramsleigh, the whole series revolves around the initial selling of Graham. (Lord Blakemore) All the villains are connected to the deception and destruction of the MC in each story. What a cruel lot of evil people.

Book #6 is out, but I'm waiting for Hoopla to get it.....love audios!

The Mystery of Miss Mason is the latest book in The Lost Lords series written by Chasity Bowlin. She was a new author to me when I began reading this series, but I quickly became a big fan. I love the way she incorporates such realistic dialog and humorous banter between her characters, all the while, placing them in a creative plot filled with mystery, betrayal unexpected twists, emotional roller coasters, and romance. Since the books each highlight characters introduced in previous stories, it’s nice to find out how their decisions often shaped or alter their situations. This book is very easy to recommend and is a captivating read.

Can Mary find her missing brother and help Alexander find the truth behind his wife’s murder

We last saw Mary running for her life only to fall and injure herself and be rescued by Alexander Carrahan, Lord Wolverton.

Alexander has had much of his property taken from him as his late wife’s family hold him responsible for her murder.

Mary was found near to the property of the man he knows has important information.

Gradually Mary’s and Alexander’s story lines converge and surprising truths emerge.

There is danger from many sources and much has to be revealed and resolved before these two can find their HEA.

Framed for a murder he did not commit, the Earl of Wolverton is determined to clear his name and have all his funds returned to him. Finding a woman running through the woods, he takes her to his home and nurses her back to health. As she recovers and they discuss her abduction, they realize maybe the two incidents are related. Their detective work brings a huge surprise to both and their plans to court-and possibly more in life-are disrupted. This was a love story with a mystery and a very big twist, which made for a nice afternoon read.

What a great story. I love how Mary and Alex come together. There is mystery and intrigue, which I just loved. This author created depths of intrigue which truly kept me guessing trying to figure things out before things were revealed. She also allows these characters to find their way to each other gradually in reference to falling for one another. My heart went out to Alex more than Mary though... I think it is because he had so much more depth. I truly believe readers will appreciate and enjoy this story. I hope they pick it up!

Good plot with enough twists to keep it interesting. However, the characters seemed to lack depth compared to the previous books in this series. They performed according to their roles in the story, but I didn't get a good sense of what motivated their actions. I found the hero to be a little too noble, sometimes wimpy and even naive. The heroine was sweet but shallow. Still, there was enough mystery and romance to keep me reading steadily until the end.

I rate this book highly on plot, intrigue, and romance. However, unanswered questions about the characters left me wanting.

The Mystery of Miss Mason

I enjoyed the follow up of Miss Mason from the previous story. I like when characters in one story have. A Life in another story. Mary, brother Benedict, believed he was the missing son of Lady Vale. She had gone to bath to try and find out more information about her and Benedict’s life. She followed lady Vale and her companion. Mary was abducted and taken from Bath. This is a very interesting story. People were abducted for sell, prostitution and other evils. Great story. Don’t miss this one

The book lived up to its name

Mary Mason was a young woman abducted and given to or sold to an unscrupulous couple and grew up under the protection of her brother, who was also stolen and sold.

It started interesting, but sort of petered out and picked up and the mystery began. At this point, I’ve read books 1, 3 and 5. I wanted to follow the the stories of Benedict and Mary but there are still some unanswered questions. I read the story of Ambrose, next in the series to see if it comes together.

Quite interesting

I have read every book so far in the series and this book does not disappoint. Beautiful storyline and lovely characters. I especially like the addition of the rather rude housekeeper of Lord Wolverton, Mrs Epson .All in all a rather interesting novel and excellent writing and storytelling. Also quite funny in some parts.
