Rai Peterson awakens to find herself enveloped by darkness, the stagnant air of the dank dungeon closing in around her. Unable to use her powers, she is freezing, weak, and terrified of the fate that awaits her. She had murdered the Queen of the Air Kingdom. She was as good as dead.
But was life worth living if Wolfram was already mated? She had no real home, no family. She would never belong. A mixed-elemental. A freak.
But Wildfire…
She had to stop them. Had to find a way out. Had to fight so no more children would fall victim to their horrendous experiments. No other innocent people were going to die for what she had started all those years ago.
There is only one choice.
Rai has to survive.
Breaking Onyx is the long-awaited second installment of Kate Kelley's breakthrough “Urban Elemental” series. Kelley is a true craftsman of world-building, and has an undeniable talent for creating suspense perfectly balanced with exhilarating action and raw, sexy storytelling that will leave you breathless.
Kate Kelley is a writer of Fantasy--all kinds. She spends her days gingerly avoiding plot holes and writer's blocks while four beautiful children and one hunky husband annoy her. And she says that with love.
Breaking Onyx was my introduction to this series, so there were some references to past story that I missed, however, overall this book stands well on its own. It is a fantasy for mature readers given the frequent swearing by the main protagonist Rai and some very sexy, graphic scenes. Rai’s journey takes her from a dank prison cell to the Queen’s throne and then on a quest to unite the four elemental kingdoms to defeat a terrorist army. There are many twists and turns to this great story to keep you reading. There were some editing orphans and word usage issues (or perhaps autocorrect?) like spurned instead of spurred, but not enough to spoil the flow or my enjoyment. I recommend this book for mature fantasy readers!
The wonderful rollercoaster ride continues for Rai Black
I'm thoroughly enjoying this series and I can't wait to see where the story goes. The story picks up with Rai being locked in a dark, filthy dungeon chained up with only rats and skeletal remains being her only company. Her crime? Killing the Queen of the Air Kingdom. At her trial, something unexpected occurs, much to everyone's surprise. Sorry no spoilers for you! But I will say this story has plenty of suspense, drama, sexual tension, and humor that will keep you engrossed from beginning to the end. I highly recommend this one!
This books starts right off with the suspense as Rai is locked in a dungeon. I couldn’t stop reading after that. The story grips you, and I had to race through the pages to see how Rai and the others made it through the plot.
This is an action packed, paranormal fantasy that is fresh and gripping. The world building is exceptional, and the characters complex.
You know you're reading a good book when you check to see how much is left and you're relieved that you're only halfway! Couldnt put this down. The story of Rai only gets more interesting and complicated if thats even possible. Im not one for spoilers so really dont want to say much about the plot itself except that it had me hooked all the way through. And if Rai doesnt end up with Wolfram I will cry!! Genuinely can't wait for the next installment to see what crazy things will happen to them next.
Great sequel. Another action packed, unpredictable story from Kate Kelley. Rai continues her journey of becoming a hero. Selflessly fighting to protect others. I love the exciting world the author has created. Love this series and highly recommend it!
