Joynell Schultz spends her days working in a “reliable profession” as a veterinary pharmacist, which pays the bills, but isn’t nearly as exciting as creating alternative worlds writing speculative fiction. While shivering through the long northern Wisconsin winters with her husband, two children, and numerous pets, she enjoys reading, writing, and planning her next vacation.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.

This is the second story I’ve read by this author and, needless to say, mistakes, mistakes, mistakes. That’s the main commonality the two stories have with each other. Both stories, although the first one was technically three short stories, are short, yet have so many mistakes. I’m all for mistakes! I’m an editor and love looking for them, but in reality, hoping that I don’t actually find any. Either way, they can be very distracting especially when they’re in a short story. It makes me curious about how her novels are written.

Strangely the first short story (for the three pack) was a part of this series, yet it involved werewolves, so I’m not sure what the correlation between werewolves and angels is.

In the end, this story was okay. I wasn’t a fan of the protagonist who was very pushy, I get why, but she was too pushy. This story itself could have been interesting, but with how it ended, it was done. The reader already knows what's going to happen to the main characters.

Questions/Comments:

She runs back to the cave to get her stuff, goes to the angel and takes her backpack off, and then leads him to the river with her hands around his waist, “guiding him to a larger opening”? That would be some awkward walking, and a “larger opening” of what? She’s not at the river yet.

How long do her visions last to where she falls into the river having one, and “comes to” with her lungs burning (as though she’d held her breath, which seems questionable considering she doesn’t seem to have control over her body when these visions come) and “her body in misery.” Why was her body in misery?

Example of a mistake:
“His broken boy [body] curled up…”

And there were several inconsistencies I came across. For example:

1. She finds the angel in the cavern, the flashlight reflects off his bare chest, yet he’s hugging his knees. So how does she see his chest?

2. He moves further back into the cavern away from her, yet he tells her to step out of his way.
She’s about a “step” away from him and sets her water bottle down in between them, yet when he squeezes past her to leave, he somehow trips over the water bottle.

3. “Another wolf howl filled the air…” There’d never been any wolf howls prior to this one time.

4. She’s underwater, heading to the surface, yet too dizzy to know she’s heading to the surface, but in an attempt “to calm herself, she rose to the surface…” Huh?

One Possible Future - I read this short in the Angels & Magic: Bonus Collection. An interesting, well written, quickly read story between a psychic and a fallen angel and the possible futures awaiting them. The next story is available in the Wings & Wonder boxed set. 4*

Angels of Sojourn Series:
Burnt & Broken - I had to read all the Angels of Sojourn books that I had. Ms. Schultz just has a way about her: her writing style; her realistic characters; her understated sexual tension between characters; and her infrequent use of vulgar language. This is a well written story complete with a well though out plot and believable dialog that moves at a fast pace. I appreciate that while the angels once were human, they don't behave as humans; sex, vulgar language and all the other stupidity. Her angels behave as angels, even the "tainted" or fallen angels are good, they're just in a gray area. Their mistakes were actually to help someone in need or pain. There is plenty of suspense and intrigue in this short story. 5*

Blood & Holy Water #1 - I couldn't put this book down without a fight. Another well written, well thought out story concerning an unusual vampire (I like what was done with this character) and a wingless angel. Enemies with the same goal, but different results gained, work together to solve the deaths of potential angels and murdered vampires, and the ties between the two groups. The characters are realistic and both have morals and ethics. The angel goes a little gray, but there's so much involved in her decisions in trying to help the humans and potential angels. There's intrigue and suspense, and the book moves at a fast pace. There's sexual tension, but no sex - thank goodness this author treats angels as angels not sex starved humans without morals - and very infrequent vulgar language. 5*

Fangs & Fairy Dust #1.25- I enjoy Ms. Schultz's stories, which I discovered in Hexes and Ohs, and was happy to find this collection. This is a well written and believable novella introducing the Angels of Sojourn Series, of which Blood & Holy Water is the first book. The main characters, a male vampire and a female human and her mother, are interesting and believable, along with action and dialog. It is fast paced and contains vivid descriptions making everything easy to visualize. Fortunately, it is not a cliffhanger. 4*

Fur & Feathers #2 - Read Blood & Holy Water and Bitten first before reading this book since the characters continue with their lives in this story. The Angels of Sojourn has been an interesting series of books. Well written with interesting storylines and characters woven with a vivid imagination to keep the reader immersed in the pages. I was not lucky enough to read these books in sequence, but I still enjoyed all the stories. Each adds to a wonderful, intriguing and mesmerizing world that runs the gamut of emotions, and actions and consequences, complete with a constantly moving pace. I contacted the author to review her books and have purchased her books, too. 5*

Flame & Fortune #2.5 - Another good addition to the Angels of Sojourn Series. Different from the other books in this series, this one is about embezzlement and second chances. She's sent to earth to distract a human without knowing why. The story is fast paced, with good characters and dialog, and good storylines. There is emotion ranging from grief to happiness. I've read this series out of order and never felt lost or had spoilers ruining the other books. I contacted the author to review her books. 4*

I am a fan of urban fantasy, and, yes, I’m a fan of Cassandra Clare’s Immortal Instruments series, and a fan of the TV series Lucifer, and I love Castiel in Supernatural. But I think I have tired of the subject of fallen angels. I think the problem is that usually the angels in indie fiction are very one note. They are almost invariably steadfast, stubborn, moralistic, driven, and gorgeously hunky. There’s usually very little else to their personalities, and this story is no exception. The heroine, while I liked her for her determination, irked me in that she really didn’t see the angel as a person. For the duration of the story she mainly just saw the angel as a creature to be saved, and didn’t really have any consideration for who he was, and what he wanted, even when she was face to face with him. It was also driving me batty wondering why the fallen angel ended up deep in a cavern. I mean, if he fell to earth, he would have landed somewhere you could see sky from. Visions are always cliché and being able to pass them on for others to see felt too convenient. The saving grace of this very short story is really the romance and the emotions pouring off the pages.

I love Joy's work which never fails to make me smile. She writes beautifully and always from the heart and this short story is no exception. I loved the concept and the two characters. Joy manages to pack an awful lot of story into a few chapters. It is a perfect example of less is more. I always look forward to her work and will read anything she writes. Joy is very talented and if this is the first book of hers you have read, I urge you to read the rest. I love all her books from the Angels of Sojourn world but the rest are just as good and you won't be disappointed.

This is an extremely short, but amazingly sweet addition to Mrs. Schultz's Angel's of Sojourn series. You don't have to have read any of her other works to enjoy this as it truly does stand alone. It does, however, further enliven the world she's building with her series. If you want a taste of that world, give this a shot and I'm sure you'll want to roll right into Blood and Holy Water (book 1). As a side note, this series is a clean romance. You might also cry a little.

This was a really quick read. Who is Jocelyn? What is special about her? Who is Blaze? How does she meet him? When she offers him help, what happens? So much emotion plugged into such a short story. Wow!

A great, little story. Full of pain, loneliness, and fear. But also full of love, joy, and happiness.

Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Happily Ever After. Page-turner. Romantic. Scary. Twisted. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.

She has visions of the future - usually one good, one bad. Interesting concept - she's able to share the visions by touching the other person.
The only issue that I had was that I couldn't see any reason for the other person to be an angel.

A psychic sees visions of an angel, his future being either death or... old age? But as to which will happen, that's all down to her. Will she save him, and does he want to be saved?

It's a nice idea, but poorly executed. Typos, inconsistencies, a very rushed narrative (complete with delayed action insta-love); I just couldn't get over how illogically the main character acted, and just how fast it had to happen. It's a bit YA, only the character is almost 30. Guess this just didn't work for me.
