The Angel Island by Michelle Madow is the fifth book of the Dark World: The Angel Trials series. This series is a spin off of Michelle’s Dark World: The Vampire Wish series but I don’t think it’s totally necessary to have read The Vampire Wish series to understand this series since the author does enough explaining for the crossover parts. However, those that do read both series are certainly getting a much deeper look at all of what had happened to lead to this series.

Like the previous series The Angel Trials is a urban paranormal fantasy read that includes shifters, witches and demons, vampires and nephilm. The story in this series is centered around Raven Danvers, a human, who was about to celebrate her 21st birthday. Raven’s mother claimed that she is a witch and insisted that Raven would gain powers soon enough but Raven was skeptical of magic. However when Raven was confronted by demons and saved by Noah, who is on a demon hunting task from Annika, Raven’s eyes were opened to a whole new world.

As with all of Michelle Madow’s books the story is an incredibly fast paced and action packed adventure that still wonderfully builds the world and characters along the way. Each book will end with a jaw dropping cliffhanger that leaves readers anxious for the next in the series but then the next builds the action up even more and more. All of the books of the series have multiple points of view with Raven having been the strongest voice but to me each voice is definitely unique. Again after another exciting end there will be more to look forward to in book six of the series and I will try to be patient until the story continues.

I received an advance copy from the author, many thanks to Michelle Madow for allowing me to once again read early.

Following their escape from the bunker, Raven and her friends are teleported to the Haven, a safe refuge for supernaturals and humans alike. Raven recognises Mary, the leader of the Haven, from her supposed backpacking trip to Europe and comes to learn that she was the one who erased her memories at Annika’s behest. Unfortunately as a consequence of Geneva’s death, there is no antidote to return Raven’s lost memories.

While some of the gifted humans decide to stay on at the Haven, Raven and Noah embark on their journey to Avalon. To enter Avalon however, they must prove themselves worthy by undergoing numerous challenges that will push them harder than they imagined possible and force them to make difficult decisions. Who will prove worthy and who will be turned away?

The Angel Island is the fifth installment of the Angel Trials series. Told mostly from Raven’s point of view, it does occasionally include Noah and Thomas and most importantly a chapter from Skylar. We learn that Azazel is using a complacency potion on Skylar to exploit her enhanced gifts and foil those who are plotting against him including Raven and Noah.

The plot moved along steady. I found myself absorbed in the challenges that Raven faced. Her character has grown so much over the course of the series and we see hints of her potential in the Trials to come. The book ends on a cliffhanger involving secondary characters that will impact on our protagonists in future instalments.

I received an advanced free audible copy of The Angel Trials which was narrated by Patricia Santomasso whose clear, concise delivery made it easy to differentiate between characters.

WOW ! Michelle never disappoints with her novels. This series has been fantastic from beginning until this novel and I feel like it is still getting started.

Not only did we get to Avalon in this novel (FINALLY), but Jacen and a few other familiar faces returned. I was so incredibly happy to see him back on these pages, and I am waiting (not so patiently for Annika).

What I really enjoyed about this novel was the bro-mance with Thomas and Noah building, it was nice to see their rapport growing with each novel. My most favourite thing was the trails, and seeing Raven go through the first step to get to Avalon. The trials, and the different choices that she had to make were intriguing and honestly, her goodbye with Annar made me cry. I am excited to see Annar in the future as well as Dragon and wyverns hopefully in the next installment.

I don't know if I can wait until Spring for the next novel...this series is just too addicting. I love every moment of it.

My only sad time with this novel was lack of Sage....but that is because the last novel focused mostly on her capture, that this novel needed to focus on Raven's. However, I am hoping that in the next installment there is a healthy balance between the two main kick-ass women.

I love this series...I seriously never want it to end. The characters ,the story.. it's all just beyond amazing.

I read ARCs of the other books in this series and the prequel series as well! I've really enjoyed this series, so I was excited for this book to release! I was expecting this book to release a bit sooner than it did, but I'm really happy that it has now! I received an ARC of it and made it my next read! I also have to be honest and say that I couldn't remember exactly what happened at the end of the last book, so I went back and quickly re-read the last chapter to remind myself! I'm really happy that I did this because it helped me remember and made me enjoy this book more! After reading, I can say that I loved this book a lot! It developed the story further and it went in a direction that I wasn't expecting, but I liked what the author did! There were a few twist and turns in the plot too, which I can see having a bigger impact as this series progresses! There was a bit of romance in the plot too, which I loved, but I wanted more of it lol! I really hope there's more as this series progresses! The characters were again amazing and made this book even better! Raven was again the main female character, and in this book she had escaped from the bunker and finally made it to Avalon! She went through quite an ordeal to make it to Avalon, but we'll find out in the next book more about Avalon because this book focused on the final part of Raven's journey there! I liked Raven a lot in this book! She stayed focused and she did what she had to do to make it! Noah was again the main male character and love interest of Raven! Noah was in this book quite a lot, but the plot did focus more on Raven! I loved Noah when he was in this book! He was always there for Raven and supported her! It was also easy to see how much he cared about Raven and wanted her to help her! He was protective of Raven too, which was completely understandable considering they didn't ! This book was mainly written from Raven's point of view, which I completely understood, but there were some chapters written from Noah, Thomas, Kara and Skylar's point of views too! I loved all the different point of views because they allowed for side stories to happen and be developed and it helped me connect and understand all the characters more too! I also understand why the majority of the book was written from Raven's point of view because it was her journey! I now can't wait to read the next book in this series! It says that it releases in the Spring next year, which is a bit of a wait, but it did take longer than I was expecting for this book to release! I can't wait to find out what's going to happen next for the characters and I'll definitely be reading it once it releases! I also love the cover for this book a lot! It matches the other covers in the series perfectly and I love that it has the same cover model on it too! The cover image suits what happens in the book too! Big thank you to Michelle for an ARC of The Angel Island!

Raven has traversed the country, battled demons, faced countless supernaturals as both allies and adversaries, been kidnapped, been rescued, and fallen in love. But it seems her story is only beginning. Through everything, her goal has been to travel to Avalon, join the Earth Angel's army, and save her mother. It's finally time for her to embark on that journey, but she'll be forced to face her instincts, motivations, fighting style, and fears before she'll be allowed to set foot on the fabled island. Can she prove herself worthy?

As book 5 in a series, I highly recommend starting with book 1. This series is actually a sequel series to the original Dark World novels, but it's not necessary to have read that before starting this series. There are definitely some easter eggs, and insights into the characters in the Vampire Wish books, and there are definitely spoilers if you go back and read those books after the Angel Trials series.

The Dark World is a well thought out alternate version of our reality - with a rich mythology of Angels, Demons, Vampires, Shifters, and Witches. They live in secret, hidden from the humans, fighting their own battles and facing their own challenges.

The plot of Angel Island moves rather quickly. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down, as has been the case with each of the earlier novels in this series. The point of view switches between characters, but most of this particular book is told through Raven's eyes. There's a chapter here and there seen through someone else, either Noah or one of the supporting characters. We get to learn more secrets about what the demons are up to, as well as hints of ways for our protagonist to defeat them. Every time I think I know what's coming, there's another surprise around the bend. I can't wait to read what happens next!

I volunteered to review an ARC of this novel.

So happy to see Raven and Noah's love be so true. The are so cute and sweet that you won't need candy for awhile. Poor Thomas seems so sad without Sage even with the front that he puts on. Raven truly go through a journey in this book with making their way to Avalon. She learns that all her human qualities might be just what she need. And the very last chapter just left me so sad for the situation her mother is in. Happy to see what my love birds can get in on the island in the next book and see how things fall into place. Oh and for when Ana meets up with Raven again sitting on the edge of my seat waiting on that one.

Michelle Madow is SO imaginative. I love what she creates with these different worlds and characters. HOW does she come up with this stuff?!! Fantastic!

In this book of the series, Raven and Noah head to Avalon but each must face trials on their own to see if they are worthy. Plus, we hear from Raven's mom about what she has been going through this entire time (her powers are stressing me out .... I won't say more to avoid any spoilers!). As always, can't wait for the next in the series!

Finally Noah and Raven are headed to Avalon, but will the island accept them? There is an interesting approval process, but if the island rejects someone it could set a new set of circumstances into motion. We also get a look at what is happening and has happened to Raven's mom for the first time. Since Raven's purpose in heading to Avalon is to save her mom it's nice to know what's happening on her side of things. A great continuation of the story.

Glad I've stuck with this series, it's getting more gritty and with more action. Time to see what Avalon has in store for Raven.

Protagonist: Much like the earlier installments in this series, Raven takes up most of the chapters in this story. Don't get me wrong, it feels completely organic and while I do love the more ensemble installments, with how the story flowed it made more sense to stick with Raven. As our heroes are now ready to depart for Avalon, they learn the journey isn't as easy as they expected. A majority of this installment is devoted to Raven needing to prove herself worthy of joining those on Avalon. This installment felt more of an exhibit of how far Raven has come rather than being more character development focused.

Romance: There's not as much romance in this installment than previous ones. We do get to see how Noah and Raven handle being reunited after the former was kidnapped. I really enjoyed how the author had these characters discuss their feelings and how they would proceed with their relationship. Don't get me wrong, Noah and Raven are solid as a rock, but there is some talk of their future and what they want that I really appreciated and made me love this couple even more than I already do.

World-Building: While I've come to not only appreciate but enjoy the way Madow writes her books, like each installment is an episode of a TV drama, with this installment there was quite a bit that felt like padding. I wouldn't say that this book is filler because there's a lot about this book that I'm sure will be important later in this season, if not future seasons, it did feel like the author wanted to stretch the arrival in Avalon just a little bit longer. Still, there are some great callback to the previous season (if you haven't read The Vampire Wish season, it's not necessary but you still should) and there is some interesting foreshadowing for the future.

Predictability: One of the things that I love about this author's writing is that when something is supposed to be a twist if I'm supposed to be shocked by something, she usually makes sure to not give too much away beforehand. Even when I can see the twist coming she always executes the twist in an exciting way. There are a few great twists in this story, but mostly a lot of this story is more fuel for speculation.

Ending: Honestly, the final climax of this story is hard to pick out, and even if there is one it's more of an intellectual climax, as opposed to a physical climax. Still, I didn't really miss it until I went searching for it to talk about in this section. I did appreciate the more mental element to the climax at the end, it's not something seen often, and while it's not an easily identifiable climax, it was pretty well executed. Madow has topped herself with the final TWO chapters being WTF chapters from a brand new POV. It more than makes up for the anticlimactic final chapter in the Angel Gift. The first new POV chapter merely has a WTF moment in it that I'm interested to fully understand the intentions behind. The final chapter of this installment is long like I think the longest chapter ever written in the Dark World series so far. It's intense and what happens at the end teases where the end of this series may take place...

Rating:

4.5 stars

So, I'm having a bit of trouble with how I want to rate this book. Overall, it's a solid installment and I just flew through it, but that fact that it felt a bit like it was padded in sections and how it sort of draws out the arrival in Avalon even longer, even if I enjoyed the worthiness test to a degree, I just don't feel comfortable giving it five stars.

The journey to Avalon is full of trials, and not everyone who ventures there is welcome.

After escaping the bunker where she was held captive by demons, Raven’s finally safe with Noah, the wolf shifter she imprinted upon. And they saved all the other prisoners in the process.

Their next destination? The mythical island of Avalon. There, Raven will enter the Angel Trials so she can become a Nephilim and help fight in the war against the demons.

But it turns out the trials don’t start on the island. They start before it. Because only the worthy are allowed entrance to Avalon.

Many challenges await. Challenges that will separate every person in their group, push them harder than they imagined possible, and force them to make insanely difficult decisions.

Who will be worthy enough to enter Avalon? Who will be turned away?

Just when you don’t think that it can’t get more addictive, and that’s when it sucks you back in. By now, you most likely guessed that it became one of my favorite series. It’s not because of the story but everything, the characters, the twists. Once you start this series, you will keep on reading it. I recently finished THE ANGEL ISLAND and have myself wishing that the next book in the series was out already, and considering how it ended, how can you not wonder what’s going to happen next? If someone were to ask me which book from series is my favorite one so far, I wouldn’t be able to pick one because I loved them all. To me it feels as if every book in series has me falling in love with the series more. The Angel Trials is one of the series that I am glad I came across.

You can tell how much Raven changed since the first book, but then she had deal with a lot. Despite what happened, what challenges she had to face, and being separated from Noah, she didn’t let that stop her, she did not give up. That was one of the things that I loved about her, about how determined she was to get to Avalon, to get through the angel trials. All of them faced a lot of challenges, in attempt to try and get to Avalon, to save her mother. There were times where I wondered if they would actually make it to Avalon at all. It seemed as something always seemed to get in their way. That was one of interesting things in book, as a reader you couldn’t but wonder, What’s next? What will they have to face? and it’s what I wondered multiple times through reading the series. I wondered how many more challenges they might have to face again until facing the trials? In a way, it has you thinking.

When they finally made it and the trials started, I wondered which one of them would make it through the trials. I didn’t know what to expect of the trials, I knew that they would be challenging but did not realize how challenging. Considering what they had to go through, Raven seemed to make all the right choices. I was happy when Jacen appeared, I loved him when I read The Vampire Wish . I hope to come across Annika soon and I am curious how Raven will react when she meets her, but I have a feeling that it might not be a warm meeting. There were a lot of going on in THE ANGEL ISLAND in every single chapter and every page, and once I reached the end, I was disappointed that the next book wasn’t out already.

Out of all the books in series, the cover for THE ANGEL ISLAND was my favorite one so far. If you haven’t read Dark World series, it’s one that you should pick up now. You will fall in love. You will be craving for more once you reach the last page.

Beautifully written. Be ready, for magical roller coaster ride!

Michelle Madow has managed to keep me captivated by this storyline and it’s characters from the very beginning. Now 5 books later and I’m still left wanting more. It’s great watching Noah and Raven’s love story Continue to grow. The Angel Island has Thomas still on the same crusade as Noah & Raven, However we learn nothing new about Sage’s Fate. We only know Thomas has to get to Avalon and seek a way to hopefully rescue her. We also start to understand why the world of shifters has been turned on its head altering the way and kind they are imprinting on. The big rescue in Book.4. We learn what the demons are doing to the gifted humans. The ones who was rescued are In the Haven. This is a place known In Michelle Madows Series The Vampire Wish. You don’t need to read this series to enjoy The Angel Trials, on the other hand I will take any chance to recommend it as another great series. The way places and characters are interwoven from there into this series is ingenious. The Angel Island gets the main characters closer to their goal of reaching Annika The Earth Angel. The steps and challenges are much harder now, more personal, meaning at times they only have themselves to rely on. This author has managed to keep up the fast paced gritty storyline from book.1. Mixing that with a realism that you don’t question that a world full of supernaturals exists. That with the emotions the characters experience makes this a hit series that will keep you turning every page with as much enthusiasm as the first. I don’t like leaving spoilers, so I don’t want to go into how this book transpires. I can say This is a clever storyline that entwines one thought into another then interlaces it with another leaving you upside down and back to front..it’s brilliant!!.. you start to think “ I know what is going to happen next,” then wham ! You are hit with a cliffhanger ending that makes you go WHAT !! No ! I can’t wait for book.6.

Love the ideas, writing needs a ton of editing/work

I have read this far because I enjoy the ideas and creativity but the writing quality will probably drive me away at some point.
I have never ever written a review like this before because I can imagine how annoying it is, but I've enjoyed these books while being so frustrated by the writing and I just feel like I need to get it out. I'm a terrible writer so I admire the creativity to no end, but I'm a great editor so my brain sticks on these things and it cannot be helped.

To the author: These are great, but please! Fire your editor! Or hire one! I'll do it for free! I'd love to see these novels reach their full potential. For example,
1. There are quite a few words in here that are incorrect - they're similar to the word you want but they are not that word, and have either a completely different meaning or a similar meaning with the wrong connotation.
2. You often "tell" instead of "show" - or "show" and then immediately "tell" afterwards, defeating the point. Quite a few times you've written something like "'You don't even care what happens to me!' I said. I saw a look of pain cross his face, as if the idea that he didn't care what happens to me was physically painful to him, because he does." That second part is unnecessary and redundant - its the "telling" where you should just be "showing."
3. Some of the dialogue is awkward and disjointed and just needs a little bit of polish.

I am interested to see where the series goes!

This journey is so exciting. I absolutely love this series and each book is better than the previous. I can't wait to read the next one!
Raven is on a mission to save her mother. All she knows is that her mother was taken by the demons. Soon she joins shifters and a vampire to hunt down demons and go to Avalon. That's where the Earth Angel is right now and that is where anyone should go if they want to fight against demons. But this journey to Avalon isn't simple nor is it easy. Along the way, they face many trials. Lose companions and make new friends. Now it seems that this exciting adventure is almost over or maybe a new adventure is just beginning...
Although I missed Sage I was glad to read more about Raven. She is my most favorite character of this series. I love everything about her. She is human in the world of supernaturals still that has not caused her to lose her courage or determination. In fact, she seems to be right at home among vampires and shifters. Noah and Thomas are no less likable. In fact, all the characters are amazing and well-developed and each book in the series brings us closer to them. Every time we learn something new about them, what motivates them, what are they afraid of, how they deal with difficult situations, so on and so forth.
It's a very exciting series and I can't wait to see where it will lead us next. I think it's a must-read for paranormal/adventure fans.
P.S. I received a complimentary copy of this book.

I love the world created by Michelle Madow for her Dark World: The Angel Trials series (and for the other related Dark World series by this author - though I can verify that you don’t need you have read any other series as I’ve only read a few of those books so far). It’s a nicely put together universe filled with demons and angels, and vampires, witches and (of course) shifters. I love Raven (and Noah, the wolf shifter she imprinted upon). She’s just the kind of string kick-a** heroine I adore and it’s been a gas following along in this series (which really is very much best enjoyed if read from its first book, even though this one can be read standalone). And now she’s finally getting close to the key stepping stone needed to achieve her goals, admission to the eponymous Angel Island. She’ll do what she needs, and it’s a fun filled exciting ride to follow along in this series Book 5 with its perfectly crafted supporting cast and superbly written plot. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

Book 5 in The Angel Trials is here and I could have been happier. My baby Sage doesn't appear for a single page and I am getting very worried. I need to know that she is ok. Well, besides that, I loved the book. We had some progress on the original quest and it was good. The pace was good and I was devouring the pages. Five books in and I am still as interested as I was when I began the series. I would have liked some romantic times, but I liked the progress we made and I look forward to the next books. We got a surprising point of view which explained some things and shed some light on the questions some readers might have. It was a very good addition to the series and a book worth reading. I wonder where the author plans to take the story next and how will all my characters get their happy ending. I wish to see a more balanced book in the future meaning one that will not be focused only on one character. This one is focused on Raven and the previous one was all about Sage. I don't mind, to be honest, but both women are at a point where their stories are equally interesting and I want to see where both of them are heading.

Finally getting to Avalon

Jessica finally gets rescued. I was worried when she was left initially. Poor girl had a rude awakening. However, I think she'll make a great vampire. I love Prince Jacen! I read Dark World: The Vampire Wish series years ago so I don't remember everything clearly. I wish I had known the correct reading order though. I read Dark World: The Vampire Wish series then Dark World: The AFaerie Games series and now The Angel Trials. So I'm all over the place trying to piece the spin-offs together & remember the people. So make sure you know the order before you read these. They should come with a warning on the first page, lol. Anyway the tests to get to Ava!on are so unusual. I can't believe Raven can't remember that Prince Jacen said the Island would choose who could come to the Island. She wastes to much time acting like a child instead of following instructions. You would think if she wanted to save her mother she would be wanting to rush through anything to get to Avalon. I must say I was surprised by her choices. And I was shocked at the end of the book to learn her mothers gift.

At Haven, the gifted humans have a bit decision to make, stay and be useful there, or become vampires or proceed to Avalon. Raven, Noah, Thomas, Bella, Jessica who was forced to become a vampire at the bunker are going to Avalon to become warriors; twins (Kara & Karl) and Harry of the perfect aim are going hoping the Angel will send them home. Before leaving Haven, Raven gets some answers about her time ‘’backpacking in Europe.’

The journey to Avalon is full of pre-trials designed to prove their worthiness and the would-be warriors compare adventures when they arrive together; Harry and the twins don’t make it to Avalon and make their own destiny. Laia, the NOLA alpha and Skylar, Raven’s mom have cameos here. In Azazel’s cameo we get answers to flesh out his master plan. To my taste, this outing felt less full and slower paced like a middle outing but there was enough intrigue to pant for the next episode.

Good story. The continuing saga of Raven and Noah plus a few others. Wonderful characters. Well drawn out situations and scenes. Making progress: two steps forward, one step back. I look forward to the next installment.

I received a copy of this book as a gift. I am leaving my honest review.

*** Spoiler Alert ***

The need to free the the hairy giant at the edge of the forest seemed overly obvious.

It would have been nice if the examiner had given more information about the four domiciles to choose from as he had so many of the other situations involved in accessing Avalon.

The end of this book is not particularly satisfying. I feel that the last chapter might have been better kept for the next book.

I was happy to get back into this world especially as we were getting close to the goal,!

I liked more raven in this one, she has been though a lot and has learnt alot about her self but also the world she finds herself in. It's always nice to know some of the world and watch it from a new set of eyes.

I do like raven and Noah just feels too instant for me to really get behind them and the same with Thomas and sage, maybe if we had more of that background they would seem better.

I did like the test aspect and to see more of what really waits for the team when they get their.

I did like having a few different point of views too though I missed sage in this one since that is kinda a big deal.

Overall an enjoyable book and I'm ready for the next

First of all, I just want to say thank you to Michelle Madow for giving me an ARC of this book to read in exchange for an honest review. No compensation was given, offered, or taken to alter the opinion.

Raven has been through so much up to this point to get to Avalon and she still has a lot to face in the future, but I love that this book really focused on her (finally) getting to Avalon. Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down and I had it finished in a few hours! Every time I think I know what's coming next, there's another shocking twist or surprise. I think I say this every time, but the ending of each book in this series leaves you wanting the next one as soon as possible! I can't wait to read the next book, although I'm sad it won't be until the spring.

I am so enjoying this series. Raven, Noah and Jonathan, along with all the others at the bunker, were transported to the Haven. This, as its name implies, is a haven mainly for vampires or those humans waiting to decide what they are going to do. Those wanting to go on to Avalon were taken to a portal where they would idividually be tested to see if Avalon would accept them. Some were accepted and some were not. Meanwhile, we find that Raven's mother is alive and is now a vampire. This was forced upon her. Her gift of prophecy is amplified. Azazel has her and uses complacency potions on her, thus using her new sight to foil the hunters plans. He wants to know the location of Avalon, presumably to destroy it.

Great read.

Raven Danvers is getting the chance to see if she is worthy of entry to Avalon. Raven, along with a wolf shifter, a vampire, a witch, 3 humans from the bunker and one recently turned vampire (formerly a gifted human) all make their way to Avalon but have to pass a simulated test and it makes for exciting reading. We also get to find out what happened to Skylar (Raven's mum).

I can't get enough of this series. I love the characters and the way they each have their own quirks, Bella is awesome, sassy and determined and Raven shares that determination but she thinks before acting and takes the less aggressive options. The scene building is brilliant, the changes in scenes in the simulation alone had me on the edge of my seat.

I loved this series. I couldn't put it down The characters are alive with grit and determination to save the world from demons and steadfast in the love for one another. They will do everything to save the supernaturals, humans and their soul mates from the demons who want to destroy them and take Earth for themselves. I highly recommend this series. You won't regret it. I read it for free on Kindle Unlimited. You can purchase the series on Amazon for Kindle as well for a good price, not expensive. I am on the final book: The Angel Gift. I can't wait to see if Raven survives drinking from the Holy Frail and becomes Nephilim to kill and defeat Azazel the greater demon and save those she loves and the world. No pressure there, right? What are you waiting for? Go read the series.

Good, but not so good

The storyline is great and I will probably continue reading the rest of the series. The writing however, is challenging. I feel more like a child is writing the story, the words just don’t flow well, they are somewhat stilted, there is a lot of repetition of the same things over and over again. The characters sometimes act more like middle schoolers playing dress up! Yeah and you drink vodka for others not to get a distinctive smell of alcohol swishing it in your mouth is not going to make people think you are drunk, spirits with strong aromas like bourbon, better choice. So I think the author is creative in the worlds and the story. I’m hoping with time some better research, the writing will meet with her great imagination and then wow.
