Magehunter: Magehunter Saga: Book One

Rate this book
In a world where Magehunters track and kill rogue mages, the lives of those who can manipulate the Power are often cut brutally short. When these hunters find the young Jace, they discover that he is a child gifted with tremendous and uncontrolled abilities. Jace quickly learns that his magic means he will join the Academy—and become a Magehunter himself—or he will die. In the moments before he’s ripped from his home, he promises his father that he will survive no matter the cost. Enrolled in the Academy by his new mentor, Jace struggles to learn to protect himself and master his abilities while also trying to remain true to the Academy’s strict charter or risk being hunted once more. Survival, however, takes its toll on him, the cost mounting as he tries to keep himself and his new friends alive. When the cost becomes too great, he must choose between doing what he must to survive and doing what he knows is right.

In a world where mage hunters take up their residence the Academy and are trained to ensure they are able to handle those mages who refuse to live their lives according to the rules laid down by the Academy, there are those who have will question the fact they are to sever those mages from the Power and in doing so, kill them. Enter Jace, a young man who is found and taken to the Academy due to his extreme levels of strength in use of the power but after years of training and mentorship can Jace live up to what the Academy expects or will he be one of those to question himself and in turn the Academy itself?

This is a brilliantly written book that is well written, has a storyline that works beautifully and above all else delivers for the reader. Jeff Messick has managed to create a world that draws you in and feel things towards the characters which is a true talent and skill.

A highly recommended read for the Feed My Reads community and a gifted author from the Pandamoon Publishing community.

The author does a remarkable job of world-building in the first novel of this high fantasy series. The characters, too, are all so believable and their motives are strong. Jace, the protagonist, is complex and conflicted and I look forward to seeing how he evolves in the future books. But what really blew me away was the way the author handled the magic. The “Power,” the magical abilities that the mages and mage hunters are born with, is handled in a refreshingly realistic and logical manner. The process of creating and managing a spell in this world is portrayed in great, vivid detail so that the reader totally buys in. This is the beginning of a game-changing series and I can’t wait for the next book!

Rollicking good time

From page 1 the primary character is engaging. The plot has numerous unexpected twists and turns. Multiple subplots that I hope to see developed in future books. Over all a well crafted engaging story.
