Necrovamp #1

Until Dawn

Rate this book
A cheating and lying girlfriend is only the very tip of my terrible night. My only friend in NYC talks me into meeting him for drinks at a club down near Brighton Beach, a strange one with an even stranger name.

After leaving the insane bar, I am attacked by redcaps and saved by the mysterious and hot redheaded club owner. She feeds me her own blood, and I waken three days later in her club, but now I have fangs and a new craving.

This is only the very tip of the iceberg still. I discover that all the strange things I have seen my entire life, were inhumans, and I was always one of them. I was a born necromancer, and now I am a necrovamp, what happens when a vampire successfully changes a necromancer.
Everything goes to hell, a murdered fae girl threatens to bring her father's wrath down on the entire city of New York, unless we can prove our innocence and hopefully stop a boatload of nefarious plots in the process!

Featuring two very strong, and kick-ass female leads!
A new twist on urban fairy tales!
Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Lost Girl will love this!
Original supernatural style, with a lot of real-world elements blended in!
First book in the NecroVamp Series!

2.75 Stars. I have had my Kindle Unlimited 3 month membership for two months and had only read one book. I figured it was time to start reading some KU books. Anyone who knows me knows there is nothing I love more than a good paranormal book. I was hoping this book would be perfect for me. Unfortunately, I have to go with just an average read.

I was just discussing on another review that I tend to give much more slack to self-published authors when it comes to editing. I don’t expect every comma to be perfect (they sure are not in my reviews) I even expect to see a little slippage of tenses, things that a good editor would catch. But I just don’t have patients for really bad spelling mistakes. There were so many wrong words that I find it hard to believe Hicks even proofread his own work. It felt like he wrote this on his phone letting the autocorrect run wild. It wasn’t just “form” instead of “from” and “there” instead of “their” I’m talking about words that made no sense. Meaning I was not even sure what the author was trying to say at times. I read at a good clip and to have to slow down and figure out what the heck a word means kept jarring me out of the story. There are people on Amazon practically begging to proofread for this author. There is just no excuse for this kind of editing issue in my opinion.

When it came to the story itself I thought it was an average paranormal story. It kept my attention enough to keep reading but I wasn’t wowed. Besides the editing my biggest issue was the main character. This book is in first person. I actually love a good first person story, but it should be used to connect the reader with the main character. There was too much “telling” in this book for me. I was told how great and smart the main character was over and over. But I wasn’t really “showed” how great she was. And because of that she is a character I will soon forget.

This book was really about the main becoming a supernatural being and about a supernatural almost civil war going on. It looks like the series switches up and becomes a paranormal-crime/mystery series in book 2. I’m tempted to see if that change might work better for me. But I have so much to read and not enough time. If Hicks takes the time to proofread this series, I’ll take the time to read book 2. This is available on Kindle Unlimited.

Another solid supernatural book from this author. I'm hooked on his succubus series. This also features, strong female characters, similar world building, although different enough to give it a whole different feel. I do appreciate the snarky wit that manages to become a basic attribute for his female MC. Give this author a try, with this book or the succubus series!

Great Premise, Terrible Execution.

I wanted to give this more stars but the poor editing was incredibly distracting. The premise is wonderful and I like the characters themselves, but there were dozens of grammatical errors, misused words and poorly structured sentences. It did seem to get better as the story progressed but it could have been so much better, had it better editing.

Loved this story. Thea’s badass personality intrigued me from the start, and I knew she’d be lighting fires throughout the entire story. Her romantic interest, the vampire princess named Seri, was a sharp contrast to her, but also similar to her in determination and strength, which made them a hot match. Great characters all around. The fight scenes were very well-executed, and the world-building was top-notch. But, of course, my favorite part of the story was the heat between Thea and Seri. My dream girls, for sure.

Good story, poor editing.

4 stars for the story.
3 stars overall because the editing is bad enough to pull me out of the story over and over again. There are a lot of words that are wrong. Armature instead of amature as an example. And it happens almost every page. Some times more than once a page.

Could've been a five star

Unfortunately, this author needs an editor desperately. I hate to say ,but the number the spelling errors, extra words and misused words nearly made an otherwise great story unreadable.

Interesting concept which combined pieces of television and books I have seen over the years. I wasn’t really moved by any of the characters but I am at least curious enough to see what happens in the next book.

I think what really kills some of the stars on this is the obvious lack of proof reading or editing. I’m no grammar and spelling expert but I love to read and I know an ooops when I see it. There were so many “oops” moments in every chapter that it often ruined the flow for me. The format at the start of each chapter was a little weird too but that’s probably a software issue/setting during the ebook publication process.

I will say that I am pleased that the main character has taken her inhumanness in strides and not cried in a corner all “woe is me” like a lot of characters in these types of stories start out doing before they embrace some unknown destiny.

Rocks!

This book rocks! Hicks talent with world building is truly amazing. A tale written in such detail that it like watching a movie. An engrossing and entertaining story. I have it a 4 star however because it was woefully lacking in romance. The main characters s poo ent very little time together and even by the last page in the book, had not kissed EVEN ONCE. What's up with this? The story is well written enough for a 4 star, but the author needs to remove it from the romance genre.

Unique personality

The idea of a zombie maker isn't new however the lesbian slant makes it a fresh idea. Having her turned into a vampire too is a nice twist. There is some resemblance to Anita Blake but Thea has a unique personality that I enjoyed. Her kin, Seri is more feminine but just as powerful and they make a dynamic duo. There was a little bit of mystery too which kept things interesting. I didn't have much of an issue with the grammar but some people might. Even so, I will read the next book.

4.5 stars. I think this is an awesome book. I like the characters and the story line. The pace is fast and full of action. I would recommend this book to others that love lesfic paranormal stories. I’m a sucker ( pun intended) for great vampire stories and I hope this series goes on for awhile. I’ve already 3/4 done with the second book. The only con I have is it needs a little bit more editing so that it doesn’t detract from the story, otherwise I’d be giving this a 5 star rating.

I honestly think the book had been better if the story had been split into several parts. Too many events were compressed into one story, which meant that story-arcs that deserved more space never really managed to contribute to the story. Also, this book desperately needs another proofreader, there were a lot of recurring spelling errors.

That said, the story was innovative and well thought out - still a good read.

Fun story. In sore need of an editor.

Sorry guys I'm not a very good reviewer but here are my thoughts. I enjoyed this read. As long as you don't mind that some parts are a little rushed then I would recommend you give it a try. However what this story really needs is an editor. There where some very distracting missing letters, spelling mistakes and incorrect tenses. It's a bit unfortunate because it did lower my immersion in the story.

All that happened to Thea was quite fast and for someone newly changed, she took to everything exceptionally well. This would usually make it an unbelievable storyline to grasp but she's such a bad arse it's not too hard to stretch my imagination. For me there aren't any boring bits and I'm keen to read the next book, 'Hunted Girls'.

Fantasy at its best

This book grabbed my attention right away. It's one of those books you can't put down and gotta keep reading. Thea is my favorite character and she develops quite a crush on seraphina who is a princess of vampires and it is very interesting to see if those two finally get together. It has love and adventure. I really recommend this book

The story works

Barely. The spelling errors and mangled metaphors are like chewing ground glass.
Even though I thought it a clever story, I won't be reading any more of the series.
Kudos to the author soon a decent tale but get a good proofreader and editor.

Good book but terrible grammar...

The story is interesting and is worth it but I almost stopped reading after 20 pages because of all the typos, missing words, missing letters... The book is good but the author should find a corrector!

would have had 5 stars but...

This book has a great storyline and characters. It definitely has me wanting to see where it goes. However, the grammar and spelling were not stellar. A little editing would have gone a long way.

Loved It!

This was an amazing book. I can’t wait for the second book. The only reason I didn’t put up five stars is there were so many typos in this book! It’s so annoying!

Great Story

Thea is thrown into the world of inhumans and keeps on fighting. Would be a 5 star if not for all the grammar and misspellings throughout the book.

A good idea with some flaws in the grammar, pacing and character department.

EDIT: After reading the second book, some flaws of the first in the design of the MC and some friendly characters have magnified in a massive degree. I do not like to use the term, but the MC is totally a Mary-Sue. Overpowered characters can be fun. This one is not. There are a few things that really stand out:

her deus-ex-machina powers with basically no training or explanation. She can basically do everything when she needs to. The concept is interesting and could work, the execution is just not there.

Secondly she is "perfect". There is no real necessity to what she does and when it comes to bite her in the ass it is of no consequence. I really do not like this kind of writing.

Lastly the finale of both books just kind of isn´t there. It is somewhat anticlimactic.

Who doesn't like vampires

Reading this book inlightened me on more the fantasy world and I know quit a bit. I liked the spunky Latina character and her stuff attitude. The book was far too short and you have to get through the spelling errors. It's nice reading a fantasy book with lesbian characters and different intake on fae creatures.

This novel was cute, and I was entertained while reading it. The author has a pretty good imagination, and likes to draw on legends and myths for his background in this novel, as well as in the follow-up novels.

The characters are all interesting.

The plot was a bit forced, at times, and certain points seemed to be made mysterious for no real reason other than to just string us along, but it definitely set us up for the next couple of novels well.

As for the technical aspects...well, the author needs a keeper, lol. Or, at least a good proofreader buddy, or something. Wrong wordings, misspellings, and incorrect or inappropriate use of punctuation are all over the place. Poor dialog management seems to be a common theme in his work, and I often had to go back and reread things to figure out who said what. Amazingly, I found very few continuity errors; the author really seems to keep his events straight as he writes.

Overall, I'd have to say I was entertained, which is the real goal of most of this genre of fiction. I think the author is headed for a great career as a novelist, as long as he takes the time to acquire a higher level of professionalism about his work before he rushes it out the door. Just taking the time to scan a few rules of punctuation and dialog handling, and having someone proofread his work, would go a long way to making his stories shine.
