Schooled in Magic #15

The Princess in the Tower

Rate this book
Everyone knows that the Tower of Alexis is impregnable...

...But Emily intends to prove them wrong.

The Kingdom of Zangaria has finally started its descent into civil war. King Randor has declared martial law, imprisoned the pregnant Crown Princess Alassa in the Tower of Alexis and started preparations for a first strike against his enemies. The time has come for everyone to choose a side.

Emily has arrived in Alexis with the intention of freeing Alassa before her father can have her executed. But as Emily and her friends are drawn into a maelstrom of rebellious factions and crown loyalists, of commoners trying to escape the chaos and noblemen trying to make it worse, they find themselves faced with an insolvable problem.

If they manage to liberate Alassa - and put her on the throne - will there be anything left of Zangaria for her to rule?

Still a major worshipper for this series,

but this book wasn't even remotely as good as all the previous ones, I still liked it but it was also quite confusing and unsatisfying.

First of all, we know Emily is really really really powerful, with boosted magic and even before that - and we know she needs to constantly use magic in order to not get headaches or going mad etc. but it has been made quite clear to us that not using magic and stockpiling your energy is bad.

(or am I mistaken? Happens sometimes, but I'm quite sure on that one)

So how is it suddenly possible that she can travel for 2 weeks or so without any spark at all, when before she had to throw 73 fireballs daily? o.O
At least she should have made 20 batteries along the way or something that explains the sudden "oh everything is all right I just pretend to be not a sorceress"...

That really freaked me out, sorry but either I completely misunderstood somehow the system magic works in this world or it's just inconsistant to the previous books.

Secondly half of the book is pretty "meh" - it's basically -

"What do we do?" - "I don't know, do you have any ideas?" - "No, let's get some food" - "Ok"
"What do we do?" - "I don't know, do you have any ideas?" - "No, let's get some food" - "Ok"
"What do we do?" - "I don't know, do you have any ideas?" - "No, let's get some food" - "Ok"

In my opinion the first part is just way too long, it takes forever until something happens, which makes the ending really unsatisfying - when finally something does happen, the book is almost over.

I was really excited for this book, maybe that's why I didn't enjoy it that much - please don't get me wrong, I liked it for the story, for the part we're being told - it was "nice" (but not more than that), and I still LOVE the entire series so far.
But more than 3 stars would be unfair to other books (any less would be unfair to this one though).

Hope the next one will be better and we will finally get some answers (not all of them god no, but some would be nice) - We still don't know (for sure) who cloak is, what he's up to, what the fairies have planned, why emily had to take the Books of Pact with her, What Void is up to, the book he gave her, Nanettes role in all this, The Dragon's "prophecy", etc

There are so many hints and clues and teasers, that are just beeing ignored by everybody.
(even Void, seriously, just tell her why you don't protect your adopted child/ward, but always have the time to talk later about cryptic riddles - oh and screw that compact stuff, obviously nobody wants to annoy you so there should be a reason for that, besides - she's your freaking ward/adoptive child)

PS: And I don't like Void anymore -_- Apprenticeship is obviously a teaser we will never see I guess...

Emily is getting on my nerves. She spends the entire book talking about how insane the king is and how everything he does is wrong, because he does not fall into her limited view of the world. Now, I know the king has done some bad things, but the way it is presented, Emily thinks he is crazy because she does not agree with his way of thinking or they way the country is ran. 1st she is in a new world. You can't expect 1 country to operate by another's laws. 2nd she is the source of a lot of problems her adopted country is facing but refuses to admit it because it does not run like she thinks it should be run. 3rd she just introduced things to the new country without care on the impact it would have and she did nothing to help the people screwed over by her actions, because she thinks her way is better and she takes pride in the fact she changed the world.

Now I am not saying that her new world did not need improvements, because it did. I just think Emily introduced new ideas for the wrong reason, then tried to pretty it up without admitting to her part in destabilizing a country. Then she blames others for taking steps they feel is necessary to stabilize the country and call them insane.

What do I mean? for ex. She introduced gunpowder to a culture that used swords and arrows. Even when she found out that the people she trusted were using the invention to overthrow the royal family (which included her best friend which she supports), she did not do anything to prevent the rebels from creating more weapons. She went as far as to open her "state" up to all malcontents and allow them a chance to grow there rebellion. Then she gets upset at the steps the King takes to prevent the uprising from occurring.

I also thinks she is too arrogant. She introduced some good ideas to her new world, so everyone thinks she is great. She let that adoration go to her head, forgetting she plagiarized someone else's ideas. Now she thinks she knows everything and is right about all things.

Now I know the author is going to make it work out that she is right about all things, but I am not liking the way she is presented. Like a child trying to teach someone and they only understand half the information.

Worst book of my favorite series

I really love this series, but I am truly I unsatisfied by this book. This entry feels more like a short story with way too many words. The first two-thirds of the book is a chore to get through and in my opinion adds no value to the story. It reads like 20 chapters of internal monologue, eventually ending in another weak cliffhanger reminiscent of book 12. The biggest upset is that Emily appears to regress into a little girl through the book. I really expected more maturity from her especially after her “graduation,” I was extremely disappointed to find that nothing changed for her at all. This entry is just a disappointment, comes off as though The writer phoned this one in and is perhaps too busy with other projects.

I really don’t mean to be so negative in this review I just wanted to give accurate feedback for the low review. Especially after I stayed silent after reading the afterword of book 12. Seriously lame cliffhanger.

A měla dobrý, solidní děj.

Another fine installment in the Schooled in Magic series. Exciting story line to this book, while also moving the series as whole forward. Compelling character developments and interactions, as always. I could do without the side development of a casual sexual relationship between two of the characters, but at least it wasn't graphic or gratuitous, just annoying and enough to make it not appropriate for children. Aside from that caveat, I found it to be a gripping tale, and I'm eager for the next book in the series.

Things that are starting to wear REALLY thin:
1) The constant whining about gender inequality in a medieval world. We get it; Women have a raw deal in that world. It doesn't have to be harped on every few pages.
2) The constant use of "God only knows" or "And yet, "

The first half of the book moves REALLY slowly as Emily, Cat, and Jade are making their way as stealthily into Alexis so they can gather information to form a plan to saved Alassa and Imaiqah.

The second half picks up the pace, but all in all, very little changes by the end of the book. This one struck me more as a setup for the next few books.

This is the first genuinely bad book in the series.

The first third has no reason to exist. It is as boring as it is pointless. The second third is barely any better and you are so tired from the first third it actually feels worse to read. This author has a tendency to start slow and build towards a big finish but usually that slower start involves interesting character moments, world building and groundwork for the finale; the first third of this book has nothing. Start reading from their arrival in the capital and you lose absolutely nothing.

It feels like the author didn't know what to do with the story and desperately wrote 120 pages of tedious, contrived travelog for lack of an idea. There is some half-ass stuff between Emily and Cat that feels like it exists out of the necessity of there being nothing else to write about.

I'm curious what this book would look like if he cut out the first half and combined this with the Alassa novella to create a single entity.

STOP WITH THE CLIFFHANGERS CHRIS :(
I was kinda annoyed at Emily being reduced in power (plot reasons aight?) and the annoying stalling. That Matilda woman must have been like a Neo from matrix powerful if she was able to win against Emily with a couple of spells... rofl. Also, we got the memo that women in the Nameless World weren't treated the same way as men the first, second and third time... we didn't need 30000 of those in one book. Let's see if Emily will be forced to use her nuke spell to kill Randor or if she will even be the one to kill him.

Also, plotholes bigger than my backyard. Still loved it :D

I've stuck with this series long enough, and I don't see myself stopping. There's still something so essentially wrong to me. Plot holes upon plot holes. Like tack. The food Sergeant Miles says you can live off forever. Emily says you get a hint of taste the more you chew it but then in the end you finish the tack but its promise of taste to you never gets fulfilled.

Obviously, this is a rescue story.

Emily, Jade, and Cat are returning to Jade's wife Crown Princess Alassa's home country where both Alassa and Imaiqah are in the Tower. In addition, the latter might be executed (as part of a traitor's family) at any time. (Alassa is pregnant so she should be safe until her child is born.)

Emily, Jade, & Cat are forced to take the long way home because either teleporting in or taking the sea route would be likely to get them quickly arrested. The only route left, to have any hope of sneaking into the country unobserved, is overland.

Worse, they dare not use magic.

So, Jade & Cat are having to make their way as mercenaries for hire who have either a servant girl (or one of them has a wife or sister). They can't take the chance of anyone looking too closely at Emily. This is a very patriarchal society so if Emily dresses as a servant, no one notices her.

And yes, of course, this is galling for the very independent Emily.

But we get to see "how the other half lives" [that is, the nonmagical members of society] in this book. I enjoyed that aspect.

For the aforesaid Tower, think Tower of London but with magical protections as well as the usual mundane fortifications. In other words, they won't be able to just walk in and ask nicely for Alassa to please be released.

I am also so delighted to have a new Schooled in Magic book.

Yes, all of our favorite characters (except Frieda, who is younger) are now Whitehall [think Hogwarts] graduates (except Emily who dropped out in the latter portion of the previous novel because she had already been offered an apprenticeship with her guardian Void so she really did not need to remain to finish out her last year).

This world has so much more to offer than just Whitehall so I'm glad that now we are getting on with it and telling the post-Whitehall story!

As usual, a highly satisfying read!

Disappointing. - le fleur de mal

I was really disappointed with this book. The first few chapters board me to death and she barely use any magic thru the entire book. Emily is the necromancer 's bane and yet time and time again she was vested. Not only that I didn't like the way she let Jade treat her like a servant. She is suppose to be a powerful magician and a baroness. Emily did a lot on healing with lady Barb when she was in training and also when she went back to the past so I don't understand why she doesn't help Imaiqah heal after she was torture.

I wish Christopher stop writing so much about the politics and the throne. I understand i inevitable but it will be so much more exciting if it is more about her training with Void and facing the necromancer and developing her powers to defeat them. I will also like to see her focus more on realizing her dream of her definition of her own School of magic. Now by the way this book finished, I have to endure more reading about Alassa and Jade and the tiresome and demented King. I really don't want to get the next book but that will brake my collection of School in Magic. So I will have to suck it up. I hope the story will take a different turn after the next book. Love this series but this book was unsatisfying.

WOW!!! This one was intense. This one kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Trying to figure out how things were going to go. between Alassa and her friend trapped in the tower with no magic while the king seems to be going mad. Alassa's half brother only a year old to possibly be put before her on the thrown. Emily, Cat and Jade making deals with rouge usurers to find out where Alassa and their friend are being held, to Noblests banding together to go after the king. Then there is the budding relationship with Emily and Cat. So much was going on with this one. Plus the terrible secret of Emily's friend father's misdeals came out which only makes matters worse! Even the point that Emily is marked for death by the King for her treason and to make an example of her. Will she make it out alive as well as her friends. WOW!! this was so good. It had the makings of a great movie. Highly recommend and can't wait to see what happens next.

Entertaining enough, but somewhat disappointing. Especially because I found the series through a free audiobook of Alassa’s Novella, so I was waiting for this one as I read through the 14 previous books in the series. So yes, a little underwhelming after all the wait, but I’ll continue with the series since it has many interesting aspects that outweigh the anoying ones, at least for me.
I have some questions on certain developments from this installment which seem to contradict previous books on how the magic works. Also, the first half of the book, or at least a third of the book, could have been reduced dramatically. Nothing important happened for a long while here. Interesting way of breaking into the tower though. I’m also not a fan of the ending, meaning the epilogue, but I guess it was to be expected since it’s the type of development this series favors.
All in all, an ok read, but not the best of this series, in my opinion.

Awesomeness!

The much desired, long awaited next book in the Schooled In Magic series; The Princess in the Tower was an utterly enjoyable read I only wish went on for longer! Excellent writing by Chris Nuttall as always, this more-ish series always delivers, and no doubt always will. It's getting hard to find reliably great reads in the fantasy genre, where in big, juicy, double digit, multi-book series the author doesn't go stale. This author is a favourite of mine because his stuff is ALWAYS great. Read this book, and you will enjoy it, but also know that it will be an even more exciting and addicting read if you read the whole series!

This is a thoroughly enjoyable series, with the first 12 books being a bit of a roller-coaster of the MC's 'magical' growth as she overcomes the next challenge. The last three books have changes the pace as the MC begins to better understand her social/political place in the world that has such different values to her own.

I'm intrigued to see where the author is taking us with this. Is this just an intermission from the thrills, or will the series fan out to explore more of the socio-political considerations, or the characters' personal developments? I personally like the thrills ;-)

2.5 what the hell are you thinking Nuttall honestly you couldn't be giving less fucks about your fan base that much is clear. Everything about this series, with the exception of the awesome magic. Is really starting to get old. The constant whining of Emily about how unfair it all is and how lady barb would have done this and that. How hard it is to be a woman in a medieval time and how everything has to involve politics. Write Emily like She is above 15+ pls She is an adult stop writing her like a child.

Good change of scenery for Emily!

This is the first book post-school for Emily, which means very different dynamics. No one to put school constraints on her, no one - except her friends - to turn to when things go wrong. This second half of the two-book series moves things along, changing dynamics. The finale is... unexpected. Not really surprising in retrospect, but totally unexpected (no spoilers). And now, waiting for book 16.

I haven't quite finished this yet but I just wanted to say that Christopher, I am a big fan and jump at the sight of a new Schooled in Magic book, but about halfway through you've used the word 'dryly' about ten times in the space of five pages and I can't read on without letting you know! Anyway, so far it's not my favourite of the series but it's definitely a necessary boon after the events of the last two. Good job as always ☺️

I love the series overall--a great deal. This book was not as wonderful as most in the series, but still kept me engrossed. I liked the dialogue with friends toward the end best. I do want the series to continue, very much so. I was hoping this installment would cover Emily's apprenticeship with Void. Though I am keenly interested in what happens with Jade's unborn child (better be something good!), I want the focus to be on Emily and Void, not war...

Not too much else to say - this is #15 if we did not love the series we would not have read this far (you do not read 5 books in the hope they will get better)
I wish Emily would get her act together and work with Void toward standing on her own as a lone power, that is where she should be heading rather than let all her secrets leak out and get rid of Cat - he is holding you back.

What a gripping tale, Emily is out of school and must go save her friends from jail. Rebellion, Civil War (the non marvel kind), betrayal and fate kicking everyone in the gut at the end of the book. The Allied Land are going to be in turmoil.

The author did a good job.

Rather boring - the reason for not graduating was to further her magical education with void.
New plot lines should be developed around that rather than frivolous liaisons and emotion bagage with Emily’s abilities and attenttion to detail becoming mediocre rather than the exception to the norm.

So much happened in this book and there were some close calls for Emily et al. The cliffhanger ending made me want to deduct a star because holy hell Christopher! What a way to close out a book!

Looking forward to reading SIM 16 in a couple of months when it will likely be released.

At times pretty good, but at times it felt a bit slow. Emily is done with school, and I'm not sure if this book quite catches the feel of the series as well as the earlier ones. Also, the book-cover kinda spoiled the book, hehe.

This was one of my favorite books in the series. I love the Cat/Emily romance. I love the adventure and the civil war. I’m so grateful he writes so fast because after I finish every book, I am immediately ready for the next one. Can’t wait for cursed

The plot armor is just getting worse and worse. Without going on too much of a rant, it makes absolutely no sense why Randor or Matilda wouldn’t have wanted to torture secrets like the batteries out of Emily. They had the perfect opportunity and did nothing.
