Pehla Naxali: Kanu Sanyal Ki Adhikrit Jeevani

As a staunch anti-communist, I ventured into this biography with reserved expectations. While certain parts, like the insights from his trip to China and a subsequent few chapters, managed to captivate my attention, I couldn't help but be dismayed by the author's glaring omissions. The conspicuous lack of attention dedicated to the infamous Naxalbari uprising was a significant letdown.
Equally engrossing were the accounts detailing the emergence and eventual dissolution of numerous factions, but this intriguing aspect felt overshadowed.

Throughout the extensive coverage of the China episode and certain segments, the profound admiration of the communists for China was strikingly evident. The term "love" hardly does justice to the depth of emotion they harbor for this foreign nation. It is widely recognized that these ideologists hold China in higher regard than their own homeland, a fact that significantly contributed to the detachment of India's middle class from this particular ideology.

The narrative does, however, provide a candid perspective on Mr. Sanyal's views regarding Mr. Mazumdar. Skipping hastily from the post-emergency era to the late 90s and early 2000s raises questions about the thoroughness of the author's research and storytelling. Does this abrupt transition imply an absence of noteworthy events in Mr. Sanyal's life during that period? The hastiness of this portion evoked the impression that the author was racing to wrap up the book, leaving me pondering the extent of his commitment to a comprehensive portrayal.

On the whole, I must acknowledge that this book doesn't fall into the category of profound disappointments, primarily due to its coverage of pivotal moments spanning Mr. Sanyal's life, encompassing his formative years through to his imprisonment in the 1980s. It piqued my curiosity to observe Mr. Sanyal's transformation from an anti-communist stance to the perspective he ultimately embraced.

The titillating account of a true revolutionary who never sold out... and his comrades who all did. More or less. Kanu Sanyal belongs to a lost generation... and with his passing, perhaps, we marked the end of that era when idealism still threatened to upset the status quo. Perhaps it still can... or so Kanu-da hoped.

Rest in Power, comrade!
