She’s desperate for a new life in the Canadian mountains…He’s the last person she should trust to get her there.
After her husband’s death, Rachel Gray is finally free from the turmoil his addictions caused. She wants nothing more than a new life with her twelve-year-old son. If she can reach her brother in the wilderness of the Canadian territories, they’ll have help to start over in peace. She knows better than to put her life in the hands of another man, but she never expected the Montana mountains to be so treacherous. When two brothers invite her to join their small group traveling to the same area, she refuses. After she and her son narrowly escape a bear attack, she’s forced to admit they need the safety of numbers in this untamed land. If the men prove dangerous, she can always leave with her son and strike out alone again.
Seth Grant has made some bad choices in his life, but God healed him from the addiction that mired him in his sins. Now, he’s determined to live the life God called him to, starting with a journey northward to see the Canadian mountain both his brother and sister have fallen in love with. When he discovers the woman and boy who plan to travel the same mountain trail, he can’t fathom why she refuses to join in the safety of their larger group. Though her decision seems unwise, he has no other choice but to pray God provides her protection.
Despite Rachel’s best efforts, she can’t seem to fight her attraction to Seth—until a secret from his past proves he’s not at all the man she thought. When a new peril threatens her son’s life, she must choose between trusting in what she can control, or the man who her heart says is trustworthy, no matter his previous sins. The path she chooses just may determine whether she can step into the new life God has in store for them all.

This Homeward Journey is a beautiful and adventurous addition to the Heart of the Mountains series, yet it is easily read as a stand alone novel, as well. This author does such a great job of creating characters that I cannot help but love and care for, faults and all.
I really enjoyed watching the two main characters, Rachel and Seth, get to know each other. Actually, I liked the entire traveling party, which included Rachel’s son, Andy, Seth’s brother, Samuel, and another companion, Elias. But it was Seth’s thoughtful insight regarding Rachel’s fears and hurts that endeared him to me. Seth worked hard to earn Rachel’s trust and it was obvious that he was a capable, trustworthy man who loved God. However, in his recent past, Seth battled some of the same addictions as Rachel’s late husband did.
This story does a great job of highlighting how addiction can grab hold of people and cause such harm to the one who is addicted, as well as the people around them. It also highlights the importance of leaning on God and learning to trust Him to help you overcome things that are stumbling blocks, be they fears or addictions, or anything else.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This timeless adventure captivates readers with the hardship, treachery, and undeniable splendor of the mountain wilderness. Rachel Gray is one fierce mama bear. Her wisdom, caution, and determination make her a force to be reckoned with. Seth Grant is a truly redeemed former bad boy. He proves his gentle patience, generosity, and authenticity in a solid, steady, purposeful quest for Rachel’s trust.
Beller brings the mountains and her genuine characters to life. Each new installment of the Heart of the Mountains series has its own personality and challenges yet each is equally entertaining and heartfelt. I highly recommend this story and anything written by this author!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions expressed are my own.
I can always count on this author to take me on an adventure in the wilderness, bringing the dangers and beauty of the vast mountains and forests to life. Rachael is extremely protective of her son and doesn't trust strangers or men after the hardships in her life. I admired her determination and independence in relocating to make a new life for them. I couldn't help but feel for her as she is alternately fierce and vulnerable. Seth is so patient as he proves to her that he and his traveling companions are worthy of her trust as they continue on in a group for safety. Plenty of hair-raising adventure as they forge through the mountains and confront not only the dangers there but also their inner turmoil. I appreciate the subtle message of faith as Rachel and Seth both learn to rely on the Lord for peace and strength.

THIS HOMEWARD JOURNEY is a story of perseverance and learning to trust when life has shown you that you can't. Full of adventure, family, and romance, this is an inspirational tale historical readers are sure to enjoy.
I enjoyed reading this. There was so much heart in this story. I especially loved Rachel, Seth, and Rachel's son, as well as Seth's brother and their tour guide. I felt the chemistry between Rachel and Seth and I loved seeing their relationship develop, as well as the relationship between Seth and Rachel's son. I could easily picture her son and the stage he's in, between a teenager and becoming a man. Their journey was a long one (making it slow in places), but it felt realistic. I liked seeing what they had to do and the hardships they had to deal with. There were some tough choices. As the story unfolds, you can see these characters change. I enjoyed watching to see how they faced their challenges, and how the difficult and hard things made the ending that much sweeter. There's a bit of a cliffhanger at the end of this one and I'm curious to see what the next story brings.
There was one thing that felt off to me in this story. Seth references God and prayers throughout, but Rachel does not. The story is almost to an end and all of a sudden she includes those references and in the same way that Seth does, making their voices sound rather similar. This made it feel like it wasn't genuine. Besides that, Rachel was really, really dramatic in spots and some of that was too much for me. I also felt she had a change of heart rather quickly and would have liked that to have happened over a little more time.
In the end, was it what I wished for? I'm beginning to become a fan of this series and am looking forward to find out more about these characters. This was an enjoyable addition. If you enjoy inspirational historical romance, than definitely check this series out!
Content: Some innuendo and violence, but clean. Source: I received a complimentary copy through Celebrate Lit, which did not require a positive review nor affect it in any way.
I loved this 5th book in the series! Seth and Rachel are wonderful, real to life characters with believable strengths and weakness. I stayed up into the early hours of the morning finishing it! I was captivated by each twist and turn. Thank you Misty M Beller for another “must read”.
I enjoyed being a part of Rachel Gray’s journey in 1866 through the Montana Territory to Canada, seeking a new start, family, and a promising future. She doesn’t count on joining the brothers, Seth and Samuel Grant, as they travel north to their other siblings living in Canada. Yet, safety demands this decision. Rachel carries years of mistrust of men in her heart and in her outward actions. Her son Andy hasn’t had a good father role model and is a bit leery of these men.
God is able to forgive bad choices, as well as heal fears, pain, and heartache. Beller’s tale deals with a treacherous journey that many of us today would not even take the first step. Courageous men and women faced life and death situations daily. The book made me question my ability to put my trust in God for all areas of danger, perhaps not physical danger, but all areas in my life. I try not to live in fear but in hope that God has a plan, a perfect plan, if I will listen and follow.
This novel in #5 in Heart of the Mountains series. I will definitely read the other ones to find out more about these courageous adventurers of the past.
It's 1866 and folks are still heading west to find their future in a land less populated. Rachel and Andy, her son, are no different, or are they...? With memories that would put most people into a state of perpetual anxiety, Rachel heads for her brother's place somewhere in Canada requiring her to travel through the mountains. With a huge dose of strength and basically no trust, they set out. Burns, rattlesnakes and kidnapping are only a few of the situations they are confronted with. Is it even possible they will find their way safely? I received this incredible story through CelebrateLit. All impressions and opinions are my own.
Each time I read a book in this series I fall more in love with the way this writer creates her stories. She always has such strong and likable female characters. Rachel is determined to give her son a new life and the journey is certainly an adventure that a reader can enjoy. I love Rachel’s passion for her pursuit of a better life, her drive to be a strong mother and provider for her son is admirable.
Misty always creates a male character that is swoon-worthy. Seth is a favorite of mine now, and he is calm strength is something that any gal would want in a man. I also love that he isn’t a perfect character he had flaws in the past that we only glimpse in this book but enough to make him feel real.
Overall, another perfectly delightful story to read. I love this series and this book was a great continuation of it. I am eager to see what is next from this author and her adventures she will weave for readers.
I don't know why it took me so long to actually start it, and why the first couple of times I couldn't focus on the first page. It wasn't the author's fault. It was mine. I was still in a “book hangover” from the last great book I read. However, as soon as I finished the first chapter, I was hooked.
What I Loved About This Homeward Journey: At 3% of the ebook, in the first chapter, I already saw the first mention of God. That warmed my heart. I didn’t have to wonder if it was going to be a truly Christian novel or just a clean one with a mention of “religion” thrown in to market it as a “Christian fiction.” I wasn't disappointed. There were personal prayers to God all throughout, maybe in almost every chapter.
From the very first page when we’re introduced to the main male character, Seth, I liked him. He loved being outdoors, he had come to loath his former vices, and he already wanted to protect an innocent woman. Now there’s a good guy I can have a book crush on! I’m so tired of these romances (usually secular, but I’ve seen them even in Christian fiction) where the love interest is a bad boy, or he’s a flirt, or the woman hates the man for the majority of the book. That drives me insane!
I also enjoyed the way that the setting was unobtrusive yet played such a big part in their journey up to Canada. The climbing of the mountains, the camping details, the use of a simple act like swimming to demonstrate Andy's character growth—they all showed a mastery of setting without pounding it into the reader's brain that this was a trip from this place to that place. The physical journey was just the backdrop to the real journey, the spiritual journey of healing for Rachel and Andy. Very well done.
What I Didn't Love: There were only a couple. The first is a minor thing. I'm not sure that the thought from either Rachel or Seth at the beginning of each chapter added anything. In fact, several times I felt that the thought was something Rachel wouldn't have admitted even to herself yet. And who were these thoughts directed to? A journal? To God? Neither option really fits, as they were too personal for a journal that might be read by posterity, neither was it in second person as speaking directly to the Lord. Several times I didn't see what the thought even had to do with that particular chapter. I personally think the book would be better without these. Just a chapter heading is fine.
The second is more important. Though it took so long to build Rachel's trust, and I loved the believable length of time for the romance to unfold (unlike so many romances where a woman who had hated the man through the entire book suddenly capitulates and falls madly in love with him because of one incident), there was one point that didn't seem very realistic to me at all. The climax. And that was what brought it down from 5-stars for me. Without spoiling anything, I'll just say that the tension and stakes had been gradually building, and then from out of nowhere comes a truly evil villain without a single redeeming quality, shooting the stakes sky-high. And there was no real motive for the villain, no obvious rewards for the risk, no demand for his supply. I think there could have been a much less dramatic—and more realistic—conflict, and we still would have been satisfied with the character growth and the happily ever after resolution for the romance.
All in all, though, This Homeward Journey was a very enjoyable read with deep characters, masterful use of setting, and a journey that I won't soon forget.
(I received this book for free by CelebrateLit. The decision to write a review, as well as the opinions expressed in it, are all my own. I was not compensated for this review.)
Another captivating read by Misty Beller. This fifth book in the Heart of the Mountains series follows Simeon and Noelle’s younger twin brothers as they traverse the mountains of Montana Territory to reach their family in Canada. Surprisingly, this book takes place during the warmer months and not during the winter, like all the previous books in the series. The book can definitely be read as a stand alone, but I’m sure you’ll want to go back and read all the other books to familiarize yourself with the entire family once you’ve read this one. If you love historical romance, you’ll definitely enjoy this book and the whole series.
Misty Beller has a way of bringing the rugged outdoors of the West in the mid 1800s to life and painting a story filled with adventure, love of friends and family, romance, second chances, and God’s gift of grace onto this beautiful canvas. Seth is a healed man from his past of addictions and mistakes and wants to start a new life in Canada. Rachel is a broken woman, hurt and abused by a husband who was enslaved by his own addictions. Samuel, Seth’s logical, calm, and quiet twin, and Rachel’s preteen son Andy round out the small group heading north and all four learn what it means to be a family as they travel through the wilderness.
I’m hoping for more books in the series to get to know all nine Grant siblings; just Simeon, Noelle and Seth are not enough! Maybe next book will be about Samuel?
I was given a copy of the book from the author/publisher via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
This Homeward Journey is the fifth book in the Heart of the Mountains series by Misty M. Beller and it is a good read. It is a beautiful and captivating story of unexpected love, the importance of learning to trust one's heart again. The writing style is graceful and flows smoothly as the author tells the story of a widow alone with her young son traveling through the Montana territory to the Canadian mountains during the mid-1860s to find her brother and hopefully make a new life. (When I read stories of travel, especially over mountains and areas fraught with dangers, I am amazed at how people survived and thrived--makes me wonder how I would respond and if I could be as brave.) The further she goes into this new life ahead, buried dreams seem to come alive. Will Rachel dare to follow them? And what about Seth, a man who may not be dangerous but he sure causes a ruckus with her emotions. Can she trust him? Will she be able to give him her heart? Strong and riveting characters are likable and readers are drawn quickly into their and their stories. And they each definitely have a past story that is driving life in the present. The author has infused the story with lots of nail-biting action--marauding bears, menacing rattlesnakes, and malicious kidnappers all keep the pages turning. Realistic situations and wonderfully descriptive scenes all work together for a delightful story and threaded throughout the book is a faith in God--the God who guides us in the right way and who alone can fix situations that we are not able to fix. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading more of Ms. Beller's books. I received a complimentary copy of this book via CelebrateLit. A favorable review was not required and opinions are my own. This review is part of a CelebrateLit blog tour.
Rachel, along with her son travels from Missouri headed to Canada to find her brother. She doesn't trust strangers and wants to be left alone. Her horrible past experiences, haunt her every day and control all her decisions.
Along the way, she runs across Seth & Samuel, two brothers, also headed to Canada to reunite with their family. Can she put aside her fear of men long enough to trust traveling with them.
This Homeward Journey is an exciting wilderness story of how the hurt from your past can cripple you making you hesitant to trust again. Can God heal Rachel? Can she find renewed trust, love, and hope. You'll have to read this wonderful tale and find out!
The story is one filled with descriptions of rugged wilderness, tough decisions, and building new relationships.
I received a copy from Celebrate Lit and voluntarily chose to review it.
Author Beller has done it again. She has transported me up into the Canadian mountains, this time in warmer weather, and I was lost in the atmosphere once again. Rachel Gray is a woman with a mission and this time around she and her twelve year old son will do things their way with no man’s help. Enter the twin Grant brothers, Samuel and Seth and when they hear about a lone woman and her son wanting to cross the treacherous mountains on their own, they being the honorable men that they are step into help. But Rachel has a backbone of steal and unfortunately she must face a few dangers first before she will trust and travel with the Grants.
I have been enjoying this series and seeing how each of the nine siblings is eventually making their way back to each other. This story ends with some open ends that need to resolve before a certain couple can get their happily ever after. Since this is the story of twins, I am assuming that maybe both brothers will get their happily ever afters together by the end of the next book. I don’t know, I will just wait and see and go on the reading journey.
I was provided an e-copy of this book. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
Wow, a trip into and through the mountains. Doesn't sound too bad. But wait, it is made in the 1800's. But wait, it is made by a woman and her son. Well written and quite an edge of your seat situation arises to boot. I loved this 5th in the Heart of the Mountains series and highly recommend it. I received an advance reader copy from the author. Opinions are my own.
Anxious to travel by horse to Canada with her 12 year old son, Rachel sets out on her own to find her brother. She is leaving behind a late husband whose addictions caused anything but a happy life. No longer trusting she refuses to travel with some men who are going in the same path as she had planned. But things change as a close call with a bear, makes Rachel realize that there is safety in numbers.
I loved this book. Exciting from page one till the end. I have enjoyed the whole wonderful series by this author. You will not be able to put it down. I did find myself a bit frustrated with Rachel in refusing help so often. But that was the type of woman she was. The book shares a story of faith, trust and the importance on relying and trusting in God. Really loved how the story proceeded, the characters and that the author can really create a wonderful read. Highly recommended.
I received an ebook copy from the author. All thoughts are my own.
Such a beautiful book! The characters were so likable. I especially liked Rachel and how strong and determined she was. This story gave me chills and had me wanting to cry for Rachel and all she endured. The author did such a wonderful job of making the reader feel the emotions of Rachel and Seth. The message of faith and trust in God was such a heartwarming message, it will definitely give the reader encouragement. This is one story you won’t want to miss! I’m hoping for the next book soon, I can’t wait! Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
My heart was warmed from reading this book. This Homeward Journey is book 5 in the Heart of the Mountain series. Each book has been a stand alone but they all tie together through family. This is Rachel and Seth's story.
Rachel and her son Andy have traveled from Missouri headed to the Canadian Rockies to find her brother and seek a peace she has never known. Rachel has endured much pain her entire life and she has lost all trust and faith in mankind. She hopes to get into the wilderness and raise her son away from strangers. While they have traveled for months on their own when they finally get to the mountain range they are in need of being with a group heading the same direction. Can she trust these men that sought her out to help her?
Seth and Samuel Grant are headed to the Canadian Rockies to join their brother Simeon and sister Noel who have been living there with their families for a while now. The twins left their southern home and went west to California seeking gold like so many but found sin and heartache. Seth, with God's help has given up his vices and is seeking a better life in the Rockies. When the brothers encounter Rachel and her son they feel they must help them to their destination as well.
God has a way of putting people in our paths that we are supposed to meet and Rachel and Seth were definitely supposed to come together. This book shows us what God's love and trust can do when a person has lost both. Seth earns Rachels trust and love as they make their journey north.
I received an early copy to read and review. I really enjoyed this book, loved how it showed the heartaches and hardships women faced and also brought love and trust back when Rachel thought all was lost. I highly recommend this book.
This one really held my attention and I finished it in one day. Misty Beller is a good story teller and she has created some wonderful characters here. The emotions of the characters was well done and I felt as if I were there with them, feeling their own pain and joys. Bravo!
This has been a good series of traveling to the Canadian wilderness, and the desperate situation that drove them to come. Traveling alone is not an option and needs others even if you don’t trust them. Good series and audio was good for my voluntary review and my honest
This Homeward Journey by Misty Beller Narrated by Leonor Woodworth 5 stars Mar 19, 2020
Another brilliant story written by Misty and narrated by Leonor. I can’t find anything that could be improved upon except maybe another chapter or two!
The author has written a great story set in the late 1860s with vivid descriptions that help readers feel like they are there with the characters. I loved reading about the mountains and how hard it was to travel during this time period. It would be hard to travel the unknown countryside but Rachel has decided to do just that with her son Andy.
I admired Rachel's determination after getting out of an abusive marriage. She felt free for the first time, but her heart has hardened . It will take a lot to trust someone again. Her adventure starts out pretty well till she realizes she needs to have the security of others around her as she trudges along the terrain.
Seth is a changed man since he gave up drinking and other things that set him up to sin. He is trying to follow God and will have temptations along the way as he travels to see the Canadian mountains. I liked how the author brings Seth and Rachel together and the security she starts to feel as she travels with him . They encounter danger along the way that will test their faith and trust .
There is a point in the story that will change how Rachel feels about Seth. When he opens his heart to her and tells her of his past, will she be able to still trust him? I loved how the story is about forgiveness and judging others. We all have done something wrong in our life and the good news is that God forgives us. Rachel will have to look deep in herself to not let her past cloud her thoughts of Seth.
The ending is good and shows that when you forgive, you are set free of bitterness. Rachel must trust Seth if she has any hope of getting out of a dangerous situation. Seth is focused on what he must do and he turns to God for guidance. The road home for Rachel will find her asking God to forgive her for her anger and to help her learn to trust again. It's an emotional journey for all as they seek God for the right direction home.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
Rachel didn’t trust men and she especially didn’t trust men who drank and gambled. In fact, she didn’t trust men to not drink and gamble. Her past experiences had taught her that lesson well and good. So the widow took her son on a treacherous journey into the wilderness to find her brother and seek his protection. When she met up with Seth, Samuel, and Eilas and finds herself needing their help, she only reluctantly joins their party on the trek.
Seth has a past that was mired in addiction and vice. When he called out to God, he was delivered and determined to never go back to that way of life. Yet when Rachel heard of his past, would she ever trust him?
I liked the way that Rachel found the strength to do what she needed to simply because she needed to. As their journey took them to perilous heights, despite her terror of them, she endured wordlessly. No complaints. It wasn’t that she was strong, she was simply determined.
I appreciate the way that this journey was unlike those in the previous books of the series. As they traveled through the mountains in the summer, it was a different set of dangers they faced. There were some details about the fur trade that were included which I found quite interesting. I enjoyed learning about how the skins can be preserved – I really had no idea that was an option.
There was a point in the story where the motivations didn’t make sense to me, how the villain knew about Rachel and Andy to even plot what he did, or why the things that happened as a result did. Nevertheless, it was easy enough to shrug that off and just go with the story – it was still quite enjoyable.
As with the other books in the series, this one stands alone even though Seth’s brother and sister who have already been introduced do appear in it.
I was given a copy of this book for free. I was not required to give a favorable review nor was any money received for this review. All comments and opinions are my own.
An audiobook narrated by Leonor A. Woodworth which is always great. She makes the story come alive along with Misty M. Beller’s great writing. I loved going along for the trip with Rachel and Seth as they go to the Canadian territories for reasons of their own. Rachel and Seth’s background sure made them an unlikely pair but can they overcome these problems? All kinds of trouble and hardships face them including Indians that they thought might kill them. I loved how she explained so vividly the horses going up the mountains taking their riders to the bottom. Read about the adventures and real life situations about trusting again. Rachel and Seth both have to learn to trust. Seth had to learn to trust that God would help him keep his life changed. Rachel had to learn to trust another man. A great story that I really enjoyed. I received a free audiobook but was not required to write a positive review. All opinions and views are my own.
I have so enjoyed the books in the series by Misty M. Beller! I found the stories to be intriguing and engaging, so much so that I barely put them down. There’s nothing too complex about them and yet I find the characters believable and the stories enjoyable.
I think it’s the setting and the extreme differences between life today and life during these pioneering time periods that I find so interesting. Survival being the top priority and then the relational Dynamics between characters. Particularly in this story I loved the mother and son relationship.
While I love a good romance I also loved the hiccups that the characters faced and the level of patience they had to have with each other in such a life-threatening and endangering experience but also given their complex histories. Beller really chose to tackle some complicated issues like abuse and the ways trauma can affect uus.Whike this is just an underlying part of the story line I loved how Beller was realistic with the ways that trauma and abuse influence all parts of our lives, and the lives of those we love.
I cannot wait for the next installment and I am so glad I requested to review the book and appreciate Celebrate Lit providing it to me. These opinions are completely my own. I would love to know what you think of the book as well.
Beller starts you off with immediate action and suspense, and she carries that throughout the entire book. The impact of taking on such an arduous journey is not neglected as trouble seems to come from every side. Growth of each character is realistic as they each go through their own set of trials.
Rachel has such strength. She’s fearful but not broken. The things she endured would have crushed a weaker woman. Rachel took those situations and used them to become more than she was. As a result of her past, Rachel refuses help from anyone, afraid that she will somehow become weak or bound by debt. In her eyes, all men are the same and none of them should be trusted.
Seth is the one man who manages to see through her armor. He sees the fear and turmoil lurking and knows better than to fight against it. If Rachel is going to trust him, it will have to be on her own terms. As they travel deeper into the wilderness, it's not just Rachel who must learn to accept help. Seth must learn that he will also find himself in need of aid.
This Homeward Journey is more than Seth and Rachel’s physical journey to the Canadian Mountains. They both experience a spiritual journey that strengthens their faith in God and their hope in their own futures. For me, this was the best part of the book. It’s not every author who can reach into the abyss of pain and turmoil and work it into glory for God.
Each step of the journey, each conflict or accident is a way for them to learn how to reach out to the one who holds the world in His hands.
I could nearly feel the fear and excitement of each character as they made their journey. The land they passed through captured my imagination. Rugged mountain peaks and treacherous slopes were so well described I was able to lose myself within the pages.
Favorite moment in the book...Seth to Rachel, "With God, we can be better together."
I received a copy of this book from the CelebrateLit team. I was not required to leave a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have read many of Misty M. Beller’s books, but somehow I had missed this series. This is the fifth book in The Heart of the Mountains series. Although I had not read the previous books in this series, I had no trouble keeping up and following along with the storyline. However, I do have to say that upon finishing this book, I have already pre-ordered the sixth book in the series and bought the first book in the series, I can read through the books in order.
Rachel Gray and her son have had a hard life and experienced much at the hands of her husband. Upon his death, they begin to travel to Canada to find Rachel’s brother Henry. Riding on horseback, they try to make their way alone. Rachel is a strong and determined woman who pulled me into her story and caused me to want her to succeed. She represents exactly the type of woman I think it took to make it in the west.
Seth Grant and his twin brother Samuel are seeking to find their older brother and sister who had already moved west. During the course of their trip, they come across Rachel and her son. The immediate response of offering protection and assistance to the Grays touched my heart. Both men offer true examples of what a Christian man should be like.
This Homeward Journey is the latest book in Misty Beller's series, Heart of the Mountain, and it is great! I personally haven't read the previous 4 books but this book is definitely great as a stand alone book. I never felt lost during this book, Misty Beller found a good balance that new readers didn't feel lost but not bogged down with details for those who have read the other books. This is one of the many reasons I enjoyed this book. Misty Beller's writing style really impressed me. I found myself right there traveling with Rachel, experiencing everything she did. The characters are definitely written to be real people in real life situation. I again felt such a connection with Rachel and her journey. Her physical and emotional journey are inspiring. I couldn't put this book down, From start to finish this book held my attention and I felt every emotion portrayed in this story. I personally have the other 4 books on my list of books to read. I truly enjoyed this book and can't wait to read more from Misty Beller. I highly recommend this book to anyone how enjoys Christian Historical Fiction, you will not be disappointed. I give this book 5 STARS.
I received this book from Celebrate Lit Blogger Program and the author for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.
This author has a gift of being able to weave a wonderful story around the harsh conditions of travel in the western United States and Canadian territories during the mid 1800s. I've read several of her other books and this one is as good as the others I have read.
Rachel Gray is a widow traveling with her 12 year old son, Andy. Miraculously, she has managed to make it from Missouri to Montana unharmed and now she is looking for help in getting to Canada to find her brother. She doesn't trust anyone, especially men, so she goes out of her way to steer clear and stay away from people.
Seth Grant and his twin brother, Samuel, are heading to the Canadian territories to find their older brother and sister and their families. While on their travels, they meet Rachel and offer their help and protection, which she flatly refuses. But, when Rachel realizes the reality of the dangerous position she and Andy are in, she relents and joins up with Seth, Samuel and their trapper friend, Elias.
This story weaves a wonderful story of harsh conditions, dangers, tragedy, and fear. In addition, there is a beautiful story of the rebuilding of trust that happens. Trust in others and trust in God.
I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my review.
Rachel Gray and her 12 year old son Andy, journey to join her brother in the Canadian wilderness. After a bear visits their camp, she decides to join Seth Grant, his twin brother Samuel and their guide Elias, believing in safety in numbers. But can she really trust these three strange men? Her husband drank and gambled a lot until he was killed. At first she thinks all men are like her husband abusive, drinkers and gamblers. Either way she is determined to protect her son. Seth is just as determined to protect Rachel and Andy if she will let him. Can Rachel overcome her fear enough to trust Seth? Can Seth get Rachel to let him protect her and Andy? Seth prays Rachel will learn to trust him and he can give them the protection they need. I was given a copy of this book, but this is my true and honest opinion. I really enjoyed this book. I hated to stop reading to get some much needed sleep. This is my favorite book so far by Misty Heller. This book has a Christian message and it is clean, suitable for all ages. I highly recommend it.
