Great collection of horror stories about carnivals, clowns and all kind of freaks. My favourites were Sold (okay, some parts were extremely violent and brutal but the rest of the story is fine) and Diamonique (what a twist, you would never have guessed who she wrote the letters to). If you like carnivals or not I can highly recommend to enter this disturbing ferris wheel for a compelling and haunting ride!
Wow, what an amazing book of creepy stories. I was hooked on a bunch of them but there were a few that seemed outside of my comprehension. Overall though, this book is amazing.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
"Sideshow" is a mixed bag. I liked a few of the stories in this anthology. But many of them?
Not so much.
*Sigh*
I hate giving low ratings to books. As a horror writer myself, I know just how hard the writers worked on their stories. But sometimes, a book just isn't my cup of tea. :( Some of the stories just weren't interesting to read. Or they were hard to follow/understand.
But there were a few stories I enjoyed. I really liked "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel." And the first story, "Panis Et Poenam" was really great. "Clown in the Mirror" was pretty good.
The one word that came to mind when reading this book was "juvenile." I kept reading in the anticipation that the next story would be just a little better than the last...alas it was not. Some of the stories were okay, but not worth the effort it took to read the rest of the them. I was excited to read the stories from the anthology compiler, but I found her story telling to be like that of a high schooler given a writing prompt.
Although there are a couple of decent stories in this mishmash of words, it really doesn't make up for the wasted time to read the others. Convoluted, confused and contradictory are the only thing I can come with when I think carnivals, as it pertains to these stories. And come on...Zombies?
I truly dislike giving less-than-favorable reviews but I really had to force myself to finish this one. I didn't find any of the stories frightening, scary or even necessarily suspenseful. A few started out promising enough to keep me reading but even those had unsatisfying conclusions. Oh, well. At least it was a freebie from Amazon.
I really enjoyed ‘Sold’ and did like a couple other stories but…
The editing was atrocious. The number of grammatical errors in this book was unbelievable. It became so annoying that it was difficult to finish the book, even with its short length. Seriously, proofreading and editing would make a huge difference to the quality of this book.
Two about the circus. One talked about the freak show, & got revenge on those who hurt them. The other, a 2 headed lady, in a circus. Another story, about a deformed child. Mom signed a contract, took over sons deformaties. Other good ones too!
Some of the stories make sense and some make sense ONLY to the author and are hard to follow. Not anything I would read by choice, but worth what I paid for it which was nothing!
I was hooked when I read the first story. Each one after that brought a thrill that kept me wanting to read more. A little morbid, a little scary and a whole lot of entertaining. Just the way I like them!
There were some great stories in this collection. But there were a few not as good. I did notice a few errors, as if it could have been edited better. But for the most part it was pretty good.
All of these stories are awesome but I do have a favorite. I really love the one about the Tiniest Woman, it was super good! I definitely recommend reading this book, it is alot of fun!
Like that it is different from all other horror fiction. The writer really brings the story to life. Great book would definitely recommend to any horror fans
